julie phillips. >> thank you, stacy. and a lot of rain in the forecast for us over the next few days, only increasing at this point. the last advisory to come out from the national hurricane center, was at 11:00 a.m. and at that point, the max winds were thrill 36 miles per hour. still tropical depression 9. we have been awaiting this to become a tropical storm for about 24 hours at this point. it's just not in the best of environments. the gulf waters may be warm. but it's facing a lot of wind shear. that's really preventing too much in the way of so you can see, it's still looking fairly disorganized on our satellite imagery. in the southern portions of the gulf at this point. moving to the west/northwest at 7 miles per hour. by thursday afternoon, thursday evening, we're expecting this to make landfall in the big bend region of florida. and at this point, expecting it to be a fairly strong tropical storm as it makes landfall land. then it really moves quickly as

notice, by friday morning, it's already into the atlantic, moving away from us. so we're really narrowing in on the next couple of days. hurricane hunters were out investigating the storm this afternoon. only found winds to 39 miles per hour. we'll have to wait to see if it is upgraded at the 5:00 update. here's a look at our forecast winds. right now, we are expecting it to make landfall in the big bend region of florida. if it does that, tropical storm forced winds may be limited to mainly our northern counties at this point. because we have that southwesterly flow, pushing water. again, closer to the coast. around high tide, tuesday. that's going to be the time frame thursday afternoon. where we could see the potential for some coastal, tidal flooding. we'll have more on the tropics. more on what rain chances look like in the next couple of days, coming up in your full forecast. guys. >> and right now, we have breaking news to bring you, just into our newsroom.

is now capped. we're told that a work crew hit a 6-inch teako main near the end of starky road and park boulevard. a valve was all affected. and a portion of a strip mall to be safe. five agencies responded to that leak, just before we went on the air, the gas line was caped and traffic is getting back to normal. all right. we want go tote back to -- to get back to acthe team coverage. >> here is our storm covege the next day. >> yeah. that's for certain. stasisie and josh -- stacie and josh. it is pretty beautiful here for now. but likely won't be the case as we head into thursday. this is one of the many beaches that we'll be watching as we head into thursday, as we track tropical depression 9. the issue with, it is forecast to strengthen into a tropical storm is the trek. approaching from the south and west. and it's expected to pass on by to our north.

fetch of water from the southwest, directly onshore. square to the beach. so what that does is helps the water get pushed further up the coastline. and what it also does is helps push extra water into tampa bay. and it doesn't allow it to flow out. so as we head towards that high tide cycle that julie mentioned between the middle part of the afternoon. that's where we'll see the best potential for flooding. plus, bay -- expected on top that was. wasn't too strong of a tropical system. but doesn't take too much with tropical storms. that had storms sustained around 50 miles per hour. we had flooding issues on the bay. we had beach erosions. that's something we're going to need to track very closely, as the storm approaches. stacie and josh. >> ian oliver, inpassa grove.

going to watch the storm. track the tropics with news channel 8. and just see what it does. especially when it starts to roll in. that's when they'll make their final preparations. we are in st. pete beach this afternoon, i'm melanie michael, news channel 8. also because of the weather, the bucs change their plans. they are going to face off at a night. not thursday night. they have moved that game up one day. if you already have tickets, they will get tomorrow. and a suspected home burglar is in the hospital, following a shooting in tampa. police say the burglar broke into a home on north b street. the homeowner saw the suspect on surveillance camera through her cell phone. that's when she called the father. he ended up shooting the intruder, as he was exiting the home. the burglar, identified as michael stewart was shot in the stomach. he is facing burglary charges. while the homeowner's father

charged. it is your vote, 2016. and today, voters are still heading to the polls for the primary elections. there's just about three hours left to cast your ballot. choices are for senator, judges, even a solar energy amendment. and our correspondent, mike vasilinda has details. >> only a few problems are reported with polls around time in the state. but this will mark the first polling place where a polling place had to be moved because and zika. >> a potential spraying in miami beach had to be moved at last minute because the gardens were being sprayed because of zika court reporters. >> a notice there. and an employee at that location, redirecting any odors that turn out to city hall, which is one block away. >> while 1.7 million people have already voted either by mail or early, there is still

>> that is good news at this point. keeping a close eye on that. more good news for us, though, at this point. eagle 8hd, caught some of the final touches on the tower that is going to be housing max defender 8 radar. you can see that dome went up this afternoon. and we are very excited about max defender 8. obviously going to be a great tool for us. and finishing touches, heading out for the next couple of weeks, should be operational later this month. at this point, a ton of rain check out our camera from veterans ford. this is in tampa. 75 degrees. have already picked up 4/10ths of an inch of rain at this location. it is coming down. scattered storms moving across the tampa bay area. a little different view out at ennis brook. nice camera there. 82 degrees. had picked up about 3/100ths of an inch of rain so far. still seeing more scattered showers and storms on radar. expect to see even more over

the north and west in spring hill. greenfield. spring lake. heavy downpours. have a lot of lightning. also, tracking some heavy rain. moving through the west chase, carol wood area, all the way through tampa. if you head over to davis island, brandon. all dealing with those showers and storms, pulling off to the north and northwest. heavy rain in barto now. bowling green. wauchula, inhand spots, seeing some of the heavy spots. this all drifting off toward the coast. temperatures, depending on whether or not you've seen the rain so far today. it's still 80 in sebring. only 77 in apollo beach, though. 85 currently in bradenton. as we head out, expect the cloudy skies to continue. showers and storms will continue. and they'll actually be on and off all the way into the overnight hours. here's a look at the forecast model. when you wake up tomorrow morning, showing a very messy morning commute.

the day. continuing through the afternoon and evening hours. so ing al with street flooding already. and thursday morning, more heavy showers and storms expected, again, as we watch this tropical system, likely make landfall, thursday afternoon into the evening. gustier winds possible thursday as well. especially for our northern counties. as far as rainfall is concerned, that's one of the biggest threat threats for this system. we're watching for that. hoping for th inches of rain. here's a look at one of our forecast models. the euro. what they're anticipating. if you live inland, a little less rain than closer toward the coast. but i think we could see numbers even higher than this, in isolated pockets. we could be seeing quite a bit of in in the tropics, a few systems we're watching. but of course, tropical depression 9 which will be impacting us we're watching closely. tropical depression 8. bringing rain to the carolinas.

here's the latest track. this is still from the 11:00 a.m. update. you can see landfall. of course we're on the wet side of this system, though. quickly moves out. so by friday morning, it is in the atlantic. quickly moving away from here. here's a look at tropical depression 8. this is still at depression status as well. we will have to see which one is upgraded first. to see who becomes hermine and who becomes ian. heavy rain is only going to increase tomorrow and thursday. by friday, the system is out. but a lingering rain. good news is, conditions improve throughout the labor day weekend. guys? >> and right now, nearly 200 students are attending a magnet school in harlem. thanks to p. diddy. it will be hard to top the first day of school for the sixth and 7th graders, getting ready to hang out briefly. this charter school was combs' idea, it took it six years to get it up and running. it is called capitol, preparatory park.

-- hacks. the fbi director claims encryption is making it more careful to on -- difficult to investigate cyber security claims. hawaii is watching two hurricanes headed its way. the one on the left is hurricane madeleine. counterly, a cat 4. they expect to pass dangerously to the big island wednesday. and right behind it is hurricane lester. a category 3 storm. its sister is not expected to make landfall. right now, our own storm in the tropics for you. here's storm team 8 meteorologist julie phillips. >> thank you, josh. and there's as much activity going on in the atlantic base. we're seeing that. we're watching what is still tropical depression number 9. the 5:00 p.m., out shortly, we'll have that for you as soon as the national hurricane center releases it. but at this point, it is still a tropical depression. you can kind of see that counter clockwise rotation. it's just not that well organized yet this. is currently in the southern

the south of the circulation. and a lot of that is due to the wind shear. it's preventing the increase in development for us. here's what to expect at this point. max winds are currently at 35 miles per hour. once they reach 40 miles per hour. we can upgrade this to a tropical storm. it is forecast to to become a tropical storm later on this evening. or at the latest tomorrow morning. expected to make landfall in the big bend region of florida, as we head into thursday ev we're going to watch those cloly. it's going to fly -- closely. it's going to fly by. and out in the atlantic by friday morning. and out of our realm of worry. so at this point, still moving fairly slowly. but the next two days is when we'll see the most from this system. we're still awaiting tropical storm status. but we are expecting this to become a tropical storm before long. the primary threat is going to be rainfall for us. widespread, 5 to 8 inches of rain is expected through

rain. and isolated spots, seeing over 10 inches of rain not out of the question. we could also see coastal flooding thursday afternoon that could coincide with high tide, which is about 2:41 p.m. that's the other threat there. we'll have more on the tropics and your full forecast coming up. >> right now, we are waiting for the governor to update us on the weather situation. >> paul mueller is standing by live at the hillsborough county emc. paul, what are we expecting >> well, we're expecting the governor to actually be here just about 30 minutes from now, at 5:00. and then he will go with the members of the hillsboro emergency operation center. in the war room. the situation room, if you will. they'll be addressing him about the potential and possible impacts of this storm on our area. they'll also be on the phone with the national hurricane center to get that latest advisory, as julie was just talking about there. so they'll be getting that information. of course, he wants to address

3/10ts of an inch of rain. we've had already alt clear water beach. sitting at 83 degrees there. you can see clouds lingering. at the lakeland auto mall. 4/10ths of an inch of rain. with temperatures that have dropped back. 9:00 p.m. still looking at showers and storms around. it's going to stay cloudy and muggy. when you wake up tomorrow morning, as you head off to work, we could already be seeing heavy, tropical downpours. so expect it to be a little slower tomorrow on the roads. and we're looking at a good 70% chance of rain through the day, into the mid-80s. if you are planning to head out to the bucs game tomorrow evening, of course it was rescheduled for tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. expect the chance to see heavy rain rolling through. temperatures will be cooler. but it's probably going to be a wet one. at this point, already looking at scattered showers and storms, pushing off to the north and northwest. can you see heavy rain, right along the pasco, hernando boarder. south of the brooksville area. north of newport richie. heavy rain around the clear
