nature's fury. rain, wind, and waves pounded florida as hermine made landfall. >> hermine is now a tropical storm and moving away from the state but we are feeling a lot of effects from the storm. meteorologist steve jerve joins us now with a look at the radar. >> the storm continues to move through the carolinas caught in the trough in the upper atmosphere, but boy, the effects last night and throughout the day yesterday from a category 1 hurricane that ultimately wasn't that strong, but clearly because we lin on e stcoast of florida we have been feeling the effect. tropical storm hermine with 50 winds just north and west of charleston, south carolina will continue to drift quickly off to the north. you will see the visible satellite imagery. the tail that feeder bands that would extend off the southern section of it that get out over the warmer waters. find life of their own and

and thunderstorms. some of those are other the western part of pasco county. and the atmosphere has a lot of moisture in it so when it rains it produces a whole lot of precipitation. you can see thunderstorms there around new port richey. most of pasco county all the way up to dade city. areas that have been saturated with previous rain the last 24 hours are continuing to get more. and that tends to lead to more flooding. further south, things are relativeui have rain set to move on shore. so we can still see a few showers. the worst of it is over. the winds are still from the southwest. gusty. so watch for coastal flooding but the high tide is coming down now. >> parts of pinellas county are still coping with parts of flooding. you can see the streets turned to streams. mark douglas has been wading through the flood waters from clearwater to saint petersburg and he joins us live from shore acres, a flood prone area.

>> reporter: absolutely. all you have to do is sneeze in this neighborhood and it gets flooded. the sun is out. we see the sunshine for the first time in days. within the last hour or so, we have seen the water at this intersection alone drop by at least six inches. we are at the corner of huntington and connecticut and just an hour ago, where that car is now, there were cars setting up a wake as they through the intersection. we are definitely on the backside of this storm. a little bit further north in clearwater, the mariners cove mobile home park, they have had a rough go of it up there for days. as if tidal flooding wasn't bad enough. residents at the mariner's cove mobile home park had to endure raw sewage surging out of manholes onto their already flooded streets.

two days ago. >> water got about this high and i figured i had to get out of here. >> reporter: flooding from the nearby creek had created lakes and two dozen or more trailers at mariner's cove. lopez slipped back to his home to grab some food and check out his belongings. >> my wife was up front and she is pregnant. i got a year old over there. >> this has to be miserable for you. >> i just don't know what to do right now. honestly. >> amanda owens waded home to check on things and grab fresh clothes. they just moved in two months ago. >> they didn't tell us about this when we moved here. or else i wouldn't have bought the place. >> reporter: duke energy turned off the power at the mariner cove mobile home park wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and residents don't expect to have the juice back on until sunday or monday. so, they are still in misery, whether or not the high water

>> so frustrating for them. mark. along with all that misery, the residents are enduring there, there are also some concerns about sewage dumping into tampa bay right? >> reporter: absolutely, the mayor of saint petersburg says there's going to be millions of gallons they have to report dumping into taa ba he says they can't help it because of 11 inches of rain. that is happening all over pinellas county and judging by the 800 calls, the 800 manholes surging,he about that. >> all right, mark douglas, thank you. people in new port richey dealing with a lot of flooding there as well. a specific neighborhood blames their flooding troubles in part on local government. they say a retention structure built to protect a new community actually funnels storm water into their street threatening their homes. so of course they knew they better call behnken to get their voices heard. shannon joins us live from

this story. >> reporter: good evening rod, these residents say they have been complaining about flooding for years and nobody with listen. nobody will help. so this morning at 3:00 in the morning, they got up and started digging their own ditches. >> this is ridiculous. >> reporter: russell harrison woke up to the sound of thunder and knew he better grab his shovel. >> me and a neighbor went down to the dead end at 3:00 a.m. down there. and started digging. in the woods. with lightning and wind everything. but, you know, that's what we have to do. >> reporter: the men dug their enue and basil lane. of florid he blames this, a fancy retention pond to keep water out of a new home subdivision. >> when they built that place right there, they dug that retention area out. and all the water goes in there from our road and there's gates underthere, so when it fills up, the gates shut off and all the water is done. now it is going to store here. >> reporter: residents tell me

employees for years and get nowhere. >> but, they just keep telling me they can't do it. they won't bring us a pump. i don't know what else to do. >> reporter: well i know what to do. track down county officials. >> they say they have been doing this for years since they built that there. >> reporter: i found pasco county administrator michelle baker and commissioner katherine starkey. >> so this is our area and this is the city. >> reporter: turns homeowners are being impacted by decisions made in the city of new port richey. it was approved by the city. but the county leaders admit it is up to them to get answers for their county residents. >> we did not permit this project nor was i aware with this problem until now. we will follow up with the city and see what we can do. >> reporter: this will hopefully be a step in the right direction.

homes and making sure this kind of thing stops happening. >> i know you spent a lot of time covering flooding up in pasco. how many projects does the county have? >> reporter: i asked that today. they are working on $300 million in other projects. this one needs to be added to the list. if it is not already on it. but they do plan to seek help from the city of new port richey and paying for it. >> all right shannon. shannon behnken reporting live in pasco county. if you have a problem that needs solving better behnken. 1-855-behnken. cedar key in lee levy county was hit hard. newschannel8's jeff patterson joins us live from cedar key where he spent the night during the storm and it was a bumpy night for you, jeff. >> reporter: yeah, good evening jen. it was a rough night for a lot of people here. as you can tell behind me, the first floor of the condo is

first floor was flooded and we are seeing people picking up their belongings and trying to clean up after this storm. as hurricane hermine howled through cedar key on thursday, it wasn't the wind and rain that causedmost of the damage. it was the storm surge. terry williams and his partner martin just traveled her from atlanta to open a coffee shop. >> we took four months it ready. this is day four. now we have a hurricane. >> reporter: today, they gave out free coffee and food and worked to clean up a mess inside their shop. >> in atlanta, we had hurricanes but we don't have the surge and so, it has been, you know, we lost a lot of our equipment. so it is all brand new. bu you know,yothink about the community, the community here is great. >> reporter: a number of businesses were flooded by tidal surge downtown. >> just a lot of mess. a lot of mud. a lot of water destruction.

clean it up. >> reporter: andy beritou manages an auto part store. >> we had three-and-a-half feet of water in the store. the products got ruined. >> reporter: batteries, parts, products destroyed by rising water. >> how do you recover? >> time, a lot of hard work. and, a lot of perseverance. you can't give up. >> reporter: yeah, we watched a lot of people with resilience last night. they do have power here so that is a good sign jen. >> jeff, how high did the storm surge reach? i know at 11:00 last night, you were watching it climb as we were on the air. >> reporter: yeah, we were watching it rise. in a space of an hour-and-a- half, we watched it go from five feet to above seven feet. it reached 7.6 feet here in cedar key. we were walking to the hotel.

>> so scary. makes you really appreciate how destructive that water can be. jeff patterson live on cedar key for us tonight. thank you jeff. there were a couple of amazingly close calls in hillsborough county overnight. this is off valrico road. it cut reuben hamilton's home in two. he searched through the rubble for several frantic minutes before he was able to find his daughter. >> my neighbor started to scream there's a there. my wife started to scream. as soon as we came to composure, and i ran in, i had to dig her out of the hole, the roof was caved down on her and i had to call her out. i didn't hear her the first time. that got me real nervous. >> what a scary situation there. and in seffner, an oak tree split? two and landed on a business collapsing on a man sleeping inside. he was able to dig out and not

falling tree. well, hermine left tens of thousands of people without power across the bay area. there were many reports of downed power lines. one viewer in brandon sent us video of the downed lines sparking a fire in state road 60. pretty intense flames there. if you come across downed power linings, you should keep your distance like this person clearly did. to rout an outage or see the latest outa to wfla.com. the story with the links is right there on the home page. we also have learned that a tampa waste water treatment plant lost power from tico early this morning. the standby generator kicked on in ten minutes but it had an overflow of nearly a million gallons. the power was back on before 8:00 a.m. thousands of people are planing to hit the road for the labor day weekend. >> the big question is, what are the roads going to look like after much of the damage

>> good news. right now, traffic is once again moving over the sunshine skyway bridge. this is a live look from the you see cars right there. the sky way was closed nearly 24 hours while hurricane hermine roared ashore. it appears to be open in time for the all important labor day traffic. is it possible we could actually talk confidently about possible visits to the beach? >> when we are are not doing flooding stories? >> what a couple of days it has been. >> it has. it is a reminder. this is a cot gore 1 hurricane.

it was devastating in many areas what we had. >> but i hate to think. >> that is what preparation is all about. >> absolutely. >> take a look outside here, this is the view from hula bay. you can see the rainfall. two inches of rain. that is just since midnight. not to mention all the other stuff that has fallen the previous days. overcast. you can see 33 one-hundredths in the way of precipitation. just overcast. at least it hasn't been a hot day. southern manatee. st since midnight. the totals really adding up depending on where you are located. labor day weekend, can you believe it? the year has gone fast. it has been quite active here the last 24 hours. as for our forecast saturday, 87 degrees. sunday, 90 degrees. more sunshine for that day. we still have a 60% chance of

forecast near 90 degrees. back into more of a typical pattern. we have a lot of leftover moisture. this tail end of the hurricane in south carolina. it trails a lot of moisture out of the gulf of mexico. by sunday and monday, and drier air working in tuesday, wednesday, slightly lower rain chances. kind of the training effect. we talk about the train track setup. so right now, you are getting drenched in pasco county. other spots seeing nothing at all. you are with most of the precipitation. more showers in pinellas county. deep atmospheric moisture keeps the showers sustaining and going. and when it does rain, it rains quite a bit. southern areas not as much. forecast at 9:00 p.m. 78 degrees. 77 degrees at 7:00 a.m. then at 4:00 p.m., 87 degrees.

tomorrow. 82 degrees. clearwater beach. 83, seminole, low 80s out in lutz, temple terrace. temperatures held upper 70s and 80s . you can thank the rain for that. winds coming in fairly strong from the south and southwest. 15 miles an hour in saint pete. 23 in clearwater. and, the wind gusts are still hanging in there too. 28 miles an hour in saint pete. still gusting to 30 in clearwater. that will progressively get throughout the day for tomorrow . trailing all the way back into the gulf of mexico, taking advantage of the warm air out to generate more showers.

>> now that the skies are clearing we are able to get an eagle 8 hd view of hermine's aftermath. paul lamison is joining us now live. you are live over treasure island where it looks like a surfers are actually enjoying some of the waves out there. >> reporter: yeah, good evening rod. and they definitely are. i was surprised to see this many kids out trying to catch a wave here on the gulf hopefully, we can see one of these guys catch one live here. here goes a guy paddling. he is up. he is surfing. and now, even though it is fun and games for these guys and it is a good way to pass some time and surf here in the gulf coast, according to chief meteorologist steve jerve, he says the rip current effect is really high right now. it's a great chance for rip currents, rip tides. that's dangerous. if you are out swimming, those can pull you out to sea.
