weekend. the cleanup is happening on overtime before all of the crowds imsaid. i'm rod carter. >> i'm jennifer leigh. thank you for joining us this evening. anger over a deadly deputy involved shooting. tonight, dozens take to the street to protest after a man was shot and killed bay deputy. the shooting has racial tensions on the rise in hillsborough county. tonight, that protest turned violent. paul mueller is live on the scene in hillsborough county and i twitter feed and facebook live videos. things look like they got out of hand at some point. >> they certainly did. >> reporter: it began peacefully here on south 78 street. then all of a sudden the tempered flared. the line is drawn in the sand here. hillsborough county sheriffs deputies here. and here on this end, you have the protesters.

protesters stop cars in both directions. a two-car accident sends one driver off the road into a store parking lot. >> we will not let anyone tell us to be quiet while they cover up this great injustice. >> reporter: about 100 protesters gathered peacefully outside get and go where 22- year-old levonia riggins worked. as the night went on, things hillsborough county deputies executed a search wanter. three people came out of the house and levonia riggins never made it out alive. >> they were fearful he may be getting a weapon based on the history of his arrests and connection to guns in the past. >> reporter: investigators say he didn't comply with their commands. that the deputy who shot him was in fear for his life. his friends say there had to be another way.

that boy didn't indictment he was murdered by the police. the same people we are calling to come save us is killing us. >> he never had nothing with him. never ever had nothing with him. >> you mean he never had guns? >> never had no guns, no nothing. >> reporter: investigators said levonia riggins was unarmed later. you can see no sign now of the protesters leaving and there is no will reopen. at last night's protest, five people were arrested tonight. some of them are still behind bars. >> a couple of questions for you paul. what about the driver of the car and two, what does the family have to say about all this? >> reporter: well, the two drivers of the car we are told they are going to be okay. as for the family, we spoke with them off camera. they say the sheriff's office overreacted to the situation. they say it did not have to end this way. certainly the sheriff's office disagrees.

continues. >> paul mueller live for us in hillsborough county. thank you paul. the entire gulf coast is dealing with the damage left behind by tropical storm hermine. one of the hardest hit areas is to our north. this is video from cedar key in levy county. streets, businesses, homes all flooded by the storm surge. >> people there will spend most of the weekend cleaning up from the damage. jeff patterson joins us live from the area. jeff? >> reporter: good evening and rod. governor scott was here touring spots like this to see for himself. there was a mandatory evacuation order. a lot of people road out the storm in places like this and their stories are frightening. >> most of the night, we were on that couch. >> reporter: denise decided to ride it out in her condo.

floor of her building. >> if you look out, you could see waves breaking over the rocks there. it was scary. it was very scary. >> reporter: as the storm raged on, things got worse. >> i saw my kayak float by which i had chained to the fence. then i saw the fence float by. it was very, very scary. >> reporter: tonight, governor rick scott toured the area by helicopter. >> we saw a plot of boats in the wrong places. we saw a lot of docks met with residents, the chief of police and the sheriff promising law enforcement help from all over florida. >> we also had members of the national guard already out, they were prepositioned last night. >> reporter: today, we saw people all over cedar key cleaning up from the storm surge. the chief of police told me they will recover. >> they have each other, they help each other without question. they help each other out. >> reporter: you know, the

middle of the storm last night. i know this because i met him last night and he asked us to move our satellite truck to higher ground. pretty good idea on his part, jen. >> turns out it was. that is proof they were literally all hands on deck. i listened to your story and i think about all of the anxieties these people had to go through and everything they must have experience. how are they all doing tonight? >> reporter: here is a great example of that. open house. open house. somebody put that up there as a joke. i met some very resilient people out here. it will take work but they will be back. >> at this point, you have to laugh or cry. we get it. jeff patterson, thank you. in citrus county, crews are reporting widespread flooding and power outages there. one first responder says this is the worst storm damage since

in hillsborough county's emergency management, a lot of trees went down during the storm. he just moved here from brooklyn, saw his home cut in half from a tree. reuben got really scared. >> my daughter was in the room here. for five seconds everything was blurry. we everybody. the screaming started. my neighbor screamed there's a child in there. >> he crawled into the room and pulled his daughter from beneath the wreckage unharmed. in seffner, a giant oak tree smashed through a business trapping a 78-year-old man beneath the ceiling. his name is dale collier and he escaped with bumps and bruises. days of rain flooded streets in saint petersburg. especially the shore acres area

the problem. in clearwater, duke energy turned off power to the mariners cove mobile home park. the big labor day weekend is here. in clearwater, the beaches are likely to be towel to towel with people seeking one last summertime outing. after hermine, we could all use a break right? the sands may not be picture perfect. peter bernard is live on clearwater beach. how does it look there. >> surprisingly. the city workers today came out here and did a good job. but, the hurricane did take its toll on this little strand of paradise. hurricane hermine left behind flooding, debris, and a bit of damage. blustery breezes didn't keep people away from clearwater beach despite red flag warnings of dangerous surf, it is green light for these guys. >> how often do you get to use your board here? >> once or twice a year.

a jetty and seawall. repair costs? $175,000. sand dunes, 100 grand to fix them. sea grass, add another, $35,000. tons of sand are gone. $25,000 to the bill. you are looking at $335,000 in this area alone. northeast of the stuff is >> >> reporter: city crews cleaned the famous beach walk. a few place haves pools of water. not the greatest for tourists. >> the wind and stuff was pretty strong. >> reporter: any sand found in parking lots had to be hauled off over contamination fears. never heard that beforings

at the dimaggio complex, a scoreboard, a foul post, all damaged. the city plans to apply to fema to get some of the money reimbursed. >> peter bernard, thank you. in the coming days, sarasota county officials will survey the coastline to damage the erosion hermine left behind. many lido key residents say it chewed up the coastline and destroyed many sea turtle nests wildlife experts will assess all the damage. strong winds from the storm snapped trees in polk county causing a lot of major damage to some homes there. several home ins lake land had trees land on top of them. that area had a lot of branches and debris scattered around as well. a lot of people are without power tonight. to report an outage in your neighborhood, go to wfla.com. the story with the links is right there on the home page. all right, we are less than

are at 60%. 40% as we head into sunday and monday. lower tuesday and wednesday. and we could thank some slightly drier air pushing its way further south. at 7:00 a.m., 77 degrees. 82 degrees at noon. 87 degrees at 4:00 p.m. again, keep in mind, we will have plenty of clouds around. we will see short periods of sunshine. still enough instability, the tail end of the large area of low pressure. almost like a front in some ways. where showers can develop and cruise across the state. we have moisture around. 81 clearwater beach. river view, treasure island, 80. 75 in brooksville. bar toe, upper 70s . same story in weeki wachee. in the tropics, next five days, about a 20% chance of development for this little tropical wave here. forecast continue to move to the west. that is over a five day period. we will continue to keep an eye on it. for the moment, happy to report nothing upstream. we still have the leftovers of hermine, a tropical storm.

now. you can see on the counterclock wise circulation moving in, that strong on shore flow into places like the outer banks of north carolina. pass quickly over the state of south carolina. shot quickly up to the notice throughout the day. we have seen the tail end of that trail some heavy rain shower. we saw five inches of rain in parts of pasco county as a result of the heavy rain. measured tha in land o' lakes. new port richey had four inches of rain as well. that's the traffic it slows down for hermine. causing some labor day havoc there in terms of the weather. football forecast. got to love this. towson state. umass and the gators playing in the swamp. temperature wise what we would

florida a&m travels down to miami. miami gardens, 86 degrees. saturday, 6:00. down in south florida. and ucf, the knights are playing south carolina state. 87 degrees in orlando. temperatures are warm and this game is monday. fsu and old miss. that game played in orlando. an interesting one there. rpm forecast keeps the showers rolling across the state. quite a few clouds too. clouds we have seen plenty of and saturday afternoon, lingering deep moisture around here. same for sunday. marine forecast, southwest winds, much, much less as you can see here. as for the next high tide showing up there at 3:45 a.m. high tide not as significant this time because the winds are not as strong. that is great news to report. so, the eight day forecast, holiday weekend, by next week, temperatures return to normal. lower rain chances. a chance to dry out and get a break are the the rain.
