recent cases where cell phones and even a gatorade bottle caused devastating crashes here in the bay area. >> we'll show you what it takes to prepare for a competition of this magnitude. good evening. i'm jennifer leigh. >> i'm keith cate. thank you for joining us tonight. first up tonight shot on the way to wal-mart in pasco county, a deranged driver pulling out a shotgun and blasting away. melanie michael is joining us live tonight from that wal-mart in land o'lakes on boulevard, in fact. this began with a road rain incident. >> reporter: it did -- road rage incident. >> reporter: it did, keyed, good evening to you. all of us -- keith. good evening to you. all of us have seen this before where someone irritates you in traffic. in this wal-mart parking lot the man drove up to him and he shot him. >> he pulled up to him and stopped. i couldn't see him. it was just dark. all of a sudden, boom. >> reporter: jake everett

never saw it coming, a blast from a shotgun. >> it felt like a sting. it was so quick and i was so amped up with adrenaline. >> reporter: an angry driver followed everitt and his girl friend into the parking lot of a pasco wal-mart. the mystery man had a gun ready and everitt was his target. >> it's frightening. i've never been shot before. >> reporter: it started on state road 54 when a black suv began brake checking the couple. when they turned in the parking lot, were you scared? >> i mean i didn't really know what was going on, but after the fact, yeah. it was scary, very scary thing. >> it was the most frightening thing. i mean i've never had a gunshot go off that close to me before. >> reporter: everitt and his girl friend are grateful that her little girl wasn't in the back seat where she would have been inches away from the blast. >> if someone brake checks you or you have a problem with someone on the road, just get

around 8:30 in bradenton at 26th street and 30th avenue west. the cyclist was taken to the hospital as a trauma alert. we are working to find out how the victim is doing and to get a vehicle description. we have a breaking news consumer alert to tell you about. teco customers, check your bank accounts. thousands of you overpaid on your bill and may not know it. here's what happened. the online bill pay vendor for the company had a glitch over the weekend. that caused payments for all 12 previous months to be processed at once. 8 on your side called teco. a spokeswoman promised us they are working hard to resolve the issues and reimburse customers for the overcharges and fees by tomorrow hopefully. in the meantime e pay it down on the website. customers will not be disconnected or charged late fees according to teco. in pinellas county the 7 for a missing 3-year-old boy -- the 7 for a missing 3-year-old

3-year-old boy is over. no charges are expected to be file against that father. a father accused of leaving his child in a hot truck is off the job tonight. troy whitaker was placed on administrative leave from his job as a hillsborough county firefighter. whitaker is accused of leaving his son in a truck over eight hours friday. his friends are defending him saying this is just a tragic mistake. >> he's crying. he's crying out. he's ll it's very sad. it's sad for me, too. >> again the little boy passed away. whitaker is charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child. he's out of jail on a $50,000 bond. investigators tell us the boy's body temperature was 107.6 when he was found. it happened in an instant. sunday night a chin reaction crash on the clearwater side of -- chain reaction crash on the

campbell causeway blamed on a driver dropping a bottle of gatorade. it's yet another case of distracted driving. peter bernard is live on the causeway and you found out this type of crash is happening way too often. >> reporter: way too often, jen, and the wreck that happened here sent eight people to area hospitals including an 18-month-old girl and a 3-year- old. there's where it happened right there. many distracted driving crashes can be blamed on one thing, people looking at their phones. one moment of distraction and this is what you get, a mangled mess of metal, plastic and glass, several injuries including a baby, gabriella alvarez suffering critical injuries. tampa injury attorney derek capaz is frustrated with the ongoing problem of distracted drivers. he sees firsthand the carnage they leave behind. >> we've seen a dramatic increase in the number of crashes occurring every year. just last year alone it was reported over 45,000 crashes

realize there was a red light from a moment of inattention. >> reporter: in the sunday night crash clearwater police tell us julie goff driving a honda crv west on the courtney campbell plowed into another car stopped at the light touching off a chain reaction crash that required the jaws of life to get people out. when you're driving on any road, be it a highway at 55, 50 or even 30 miles an hour, you take your eyes off the road for one second and that can spell disaster. >> r thursday evening in tampa. an 18-year-old man died in this one car crash. a cell phone conversation was going on when the driver missed a curb and hit a tree. >> people feel the need to constantly connect with family members, friends and their work and it's understandable. >> reporter: e-mail, texting, facebook, twitter, pokemon go, capez has this advice. >> pull over. life is too important. >> reporter: and part of the problem with many distracted driving crashes is they're

twitter -- driver was on facebook or twitter because those companies don't routinely give up the data they collect. however, if you're on a cell phone, they can find out and get you. >> peter bernard in clearwater tonight. thank you. tonight congress is making progress towards temporarily funding a bill to battle the outbreak of the zika virus. according to florida senator bill nelson, the details are still being worked out, but it is expected to move forward this week. governor rick scott will be in washin t case for funding to coming. the 1.1 bill -- to congress. the $1.1 billion funding bill needed 60 votes to pass. last week it failed with 52 votes. the promising news comes just as the florida department of health released an update on the zika virus confirming 15 new cases today alone. eight of those cases are nontravel related, nearly all in miami, one in palm beach. health officials are working to determine exactly where the exposures happened.

involving pregnant women. ride sharing company uber hinted today she may pull out of tampa if new rule -- they may pull out of tampa if new rules are put into place. tampa mayor bob buckhorn stood with business leaders to show his support. the hillsborough public transportation commission made this week on new rules that may require fingerprint background checks for uber. mayor buckhorn is not on board. >> uber process. it may not be as strenuous as the ptc would prefer, but it's a process that has worked everywhere else in america with rare exception and it should be allowed to work here. >> today mayor buckhorn called the hillsborough ptc a dinosaur that should be eliminated instead of the ride sharing services. tonight hillary clinton told cnn that she does not disclose her pneumonia diagnosis immediately pause she did not know that it was going

the former secretary of state was diagnosed with pneumonia on friday. sunday she abruptly left a 9/11 memorial service, her campaign saying she was dehydrated, but this cell phone video came along showing her unsteady, stumbling requiring help to get into a van. today her campaign announced that she will share more medical information. >> we're going to be releasing that to further put to rest any lingering concerns about what you saw yesterday. i can attest that it really is the case that undisclosed condition. the pneumonia is the extent of it. >> clinton canceled a two day trip to california. doctors prescribed antibiotics and rest. on the heels of clinton's pneumonia diagnosis donald trump is insuring voters he is healthy. the republican presidential nominee says he just had a medical examination last week and will release the results when the numbers come in. trump says health is now an

adding that he hopes hillary clinton gets well soon. a manhunt is on in orlando for the person seen on this surveillance video entering a ft. pierce mosque moments before it caught fire. the arsonist made it out just in time. the flames took over the building in minutes. it was around midnight when the fire was set, so no one was inside. investigators are looking at whether or not it was a hate crime. this mosque was wher mateen attended services. a 2-month-old baby is now safe in the hands of cdf. the infant was found strapped in the car seat at the scene of a crash in miami. the baby's mother and another man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. the man was passed out in the back seat. a dependency hearing is set for wednesday. a malfunctioning fire cord

fire in memphis this morning. nine people died, five of them children. someone used a cell phone to call 911 around 1:30 this morning. firefighters got there in 10 minutes, but a security door and bars on the windows made it too difficult to get inside. one child is in the hospital in critical condition. the latest group to pull it's business from new york over their controversial bathroom law, the ncaa. the group announced it wi pull seven championship sporting events. critics believe the law is discriminatory towards the transgender community. jessie graf became the first woman to compete in a stage 2 run. it was awesome. >> the future for female athletes who also want to conquer the course.

a few more shower, a lot of folks, all our camera locations seemed to get something today. some heavier rain continues on the east coast. this is all ahead of an approaching tropical wave, essentially an area of low pressure moving across the sunshine state in the next day and a half. that will help lift our moisture levels and increase our rain chances, too. nice shot tonight, what gorgeous timing on this view, of course, with the lightning. hopefully he was in a safe location. rain chances tomorrow 60%, slightly above normal wednesday, thursday and normal levels by the weekend, friday, saturday, mostly afternoon, evening hours. you can't rule out an overnight shower, but highlands, polk county possibly. at noon 75 degrees, isolated storms, tropical downpours at 4

areas. certainly a lot of moisture in the atmosphere, so we could definitely produce some high rain shower amounts. the dew point is 75 degrees, 79 degrees clearwater, 76 seminole, mid-70s brandon, same story in lakeland and winter haven and frost proof, temperatures mid-and upper 70s. that's just an indication of the time of obviously and a of rain cooled air. we still got to 93 for the high. this is that area of low pressure essentially moving off to the north and northwest. is . some of the -- some of the moisture will continue to spread across east florida and up our rain chances tomorrow, especially the inland spots. the east and southeast flow,
