wells belonging to dozens of mosaic neighbors. is their drinking water contaminated or not? that is the question people nearing live mosaic's plant want answered. for 19 days the state kept the public in the dark about millions of gallons of radioactive water leaking into the aquifer. that is until senior investigative reporter steve andrews broke this story last week. steve is joining us live tonight. one again in eagle 8hd above that sink all this water. so is the hole growing or not, steve? what is it looking like tonight? >> well, i'll show you in a second, keith. but according to mosaic, the sinkhole shows no signs of growing there. no indication that says that the company says that other containment pools are in danger. but let's take a look down at this here. the contaminated water continues to flow into the sinkhole.
6:01 pm
of the walls. now when we first discovered this on thursday, we saw only a round part of the hole. now look the hole has elongated, it has widened. is that from erosion from the contaminated water that is still flowing into this thing? or is it getting bigger? according to mosaic, that's not the case. on the ground, mosaic is trying to delay fears. >> reporter: testing maxwell's house today to take samples of water from his wells. >> i'm scared to death what it has already done to me and to my neighbors out here. >> reporter: scared because he lives near the new wales fertilizer plant in mulberry. a sinkhole opened up under a gypsum sack and sucked 215 million gallons of radioactive contaminated water into the aquifer. our source of drinking water.
6:02 pm
>> no one informed the public until 8 on your side broke the news. james is at least one of the 40 places to be tested for contamination. mosaic hired att a tampa company to take samples. gary hopes to test 30 wells on tuesday. >> mosaic has instructed us to authorize the lab for a very expedited turnaround time. >> reporter: expect results within a day or two. >> my friend text me and told me not to drink my water. >> okay. >> and then i saw it 8. >> reporter: denise toddler lives five minutes. >> i think we should have been told immediately. >> reporter: her water already smells. now she is concerned about contaminants coming her way. >> something that has toxic waste that goes into the aquifer and you didn't tell anybody. that concerns me. it concerns me. >> reporter: she has three words for the florida dep which kept the lid on info about leak. >> shame on you. >> reporter: she as well as james are skeptical about the
6:03 pm
should have let us pick the firms that we wanted to test our water and they should have paid the bill on it because they did the damage. >> reporter: now the question still lingers why did it take 19 days for the public to find out that millions of gallons of contaminated water escaped into the aquifer through this sink hole? now florida department of environmental protection is still making themselves unavailable for an on-camera interview at this point and still offers no explanations about any of this. in a facebook post this weekend, environmental advocate aaron brockovich called that de- - erin brockovich called that a crime against humanity. >> it is like a crater on the moon and the fact that it is so large and appears to be eroding no matter what anyone says. it is such a large, i mean i'm staring at it right now, steve. you found this and broke the story last week and you can see that all those people will be concerned about it. but again that it happened in polk county and it affects some
6:04 pm
what is polk saying about this locally? >> well keith, you're right. let's see if we could take a quick shot of this down here. let's show that size again and the hole compared to the large piece of equipment that we're over right now. can we do that? just kind of zoom out a little bit and over to the right that you'll see an excavator that is on the back of this containment pool. that is a large piece of equipment. as we just pan over to the sinkhole, that ow that thing is. that is at least 45 to 50 feet across. now tomorrow morning mosaic is scheduled to meet with the county commissioners, keith, to update them on the situation. we will be there asking questions. back to you. >> we're sure that you will. thank you steve andrews for breaking the story and staying on it live in eagle 8hd tonight. if you live near this plant and you want mosaic to test your water there's the telephone

we've also posted that number on wfla.com. we have breaking news in st. petersburg wherefirefighters have rescued a woman from a house fire. a neighbor on 18th way north saw the flames and called 911. firefighters found a woman in the back of the house pulled her out and started treating her. she was taken to tampa general hospital and one firefighter was also taken to bay front hospital for heat exhaustion. new tonight allegations a cover-up in st. petersburg's sewage mess. e-mails and a consultant report shows that the city was warned they had a waste water problem, but did nothing about it. mayor rick kriseman claimed he never saw that report nor the e- mail. now he is calling for an independent investigation. this report came before the city dumped millions of gallons of waste water into tampa bay during and after hurricane hermine. now 8 on your side jeff patterson is digging into this
6:06 pm
could be a cover-up. jeff? >> reporter: yeah good evening, stacie. these e-mails come from the chief operator of one of the city's waste water treatment plants. they contain a clear warning that the public safety is at risk. in e-mails dated in july of this year, craven askew the chief operator of the waste water treatment plant warns that the city is having spills directly related to the shutdown of the albert whited waste water treatment to look at public exposure to harmful pathogen bacteria. instead of passing these warnings along, his manager responds, do me a favor and don't copy everyone on these types of discussions. >> it was ignored. >> reporter: the e-mails were sent long after former mayor bill foster left office. but foster maintains the city should have known about the problem because it's documented in a consultant report. >> somebody wasn't paying
6:07 pm
administration or city council. somebody wasn't paying attention. >> reporter: current mayor rick kriseman claims he never saw the e-mails or the report. kriseman refused to talk to us on camera today, but did issue this statement. included in mr. craven askew's e-mail is a consultant report that i believe has never been shared publicly with my office or city council. as such i have asked our legal and human resource department to work with an independent firm to learn why this report has only recently surfaced. bill foster knows about the consultant report because he commissioned the report as mayor. >> i believe, i believe that everybody knew or should have known that during high-water events you would have these peaks and that it need today be treated. >> reporter: bill foster knows craven askew the plant manager who wrote those e-mails, knows about that report. he called craven askew's e-

sent those if he didn't have the science to back it up. foster told me that craven askew is an award-winning plant manager and knows what he is talking about, stacie. >> all right, jeff patterson live in st. petersburg, thank you. tonight an 8 on your side warning. a new skimmer scan in the bay area. coming up where the skimmer was found and what you need to

new tonight a polk county man accused of firing shots during a road rage incident is also accused of shooting up his ex-girlfriend's house. thomas vice appeared before a judge on a slew of charges including attempted murder. both shootings happened saturday within an hour of each other. we're told that vice shot at another driver on highway 98 less than an hour later. deputies say that vice fired sish girlfriend's house. newspaper now an 8 on your side consumer alert. check your accounts after a credit card skimmer was found at a gas pump. a service tech at 7-eleven on clark road near catamaran drive found the device on one of thepumps on sunday night. investigators are not sure how long it has been there. if you bought gas at this 7- eleven make sure you monitor your accounts for any

for all drivers. potholes taking a toll on your car. >> coming up, why taxpayers in one bay area city may be seeing less pothole fixes. mark is on it because you paid for it. i'm hillary clinton and i approve this message. donald trump says he alone can fix the problems we face. well i don't believe that's how you get things done in our country. it takes democrats and republicans working together. that's how we got health care for 8 million kids.

pavement. but what are they really getting for their money? in one woman's case, the answer is a busted tire, a damaged front end, and no response when she called the city for some help. well mark douglas is on it because you paid for it. we've all hit potholes from time to time, but this must have been a doozie. >> it was about a foot feet. the bigger issue here is that there is a backlog of the pothole complaints. city leaders appear to be spending less than more to address that problem and taxpayers are paying for that in a different way. >> and i did not know that the pothole was there. >> reporter: candace never saw it coming last month. that is because the foot-deep hole her car fell into was hidden by rain water. >> and the front end of the car dropped down into the hole and made a noise. and i wasn't sure i was going to be able to get the car out of the hole.
6:15 pm
damage that she still cannot afford to fix. >> to be honest my husband and i live on social security. we don't have very much extra to deal with. >> and so hundreds of dollars for car repairs not on your budget? >> not in my budget. >> reporter: what about the city's budget? this year there is just under a million dollars in the budget for the pothole and pavement repairs. that's 78% less than the year before. next year the pothole budget will plummet another 28% about $700,000. meanwhile the potholes aren't going away. after all the rain they're getting worse. city crews are running a month behind the steady stream of complaints that are coming from all over town. it just so happens that while we were checking out this problem, a city pavement repair crew shows up. not to fix any potholes, but to have lunch. >> you don't think that you're getting what you paid for? >> no, i don't. >> reporter: the risk management department was called four times to ask them to pay for the repair bills,
6:16 pm
anyone and neither could we. >> she says she can't reach you, nobody returns her calls. all i'm getting here is a voice mail myself, thank you. >> not even a visit to the city's pothole repair headquarters. >> is there anybody here at all that we could talk to? >> currently not at the moment. >> and they are telling you that we need to talk to somebody at city hall? >> all questions will be directed to city hall, yes, sir. >> reporter: we eventually did get a response from the mayor's ce number so that she could get a call from them and so she did about 20 minutes later from risk management to begin the claims process. at least that's working out for her so far. she got to first base. >> hopefully she'll get her car first. but the shrinkage budget is a big deal. and that there is really money coming out of the different pocket. but it doesn't look like that
6:17 pm
could go on to the website, the bookmark we put on our website and file a complaint. we encourage them to do that. >> wow, i bet that's going to get a lot of hits because man the street is pothole marked everywhere. >> thank you. >> sure. cloudy skies, a little bit of rainfall adding up here at the lakeland auto mall up in polk county. 83 degrees with a southwest wind. not a bad sky, but a pretty sky out here and the famous state 89 degrees with a west wind at 3 right along 60 there. traffic doesn't look too bad in the moment. beautiful spot at citrus county. no rainfall there officially. showers and storms have been converging here to the east drifting back to the west a little bit. if you are going to move out, perhaps, watch for some of these to move back towards the coast and they could converge in the general area right around the 27 corridor either
6:18 pm
as these will continue to drift slowly to the west and some back to the east. you can see the storms south of lakeland, the rain drop that we would pick up, the lakeland automall there and a few showers stretching on i-4 right at moment. also some thunderstorms have been very active east of lake placid. just kind of on the edge of the sebring area sort of left out of the action, but a lot of thunderstorms have converged here too. they didn't do too well moving west today or really cooling off for those folks on the temperatures near 9 o. the average high is 89 degrees right where we should be say the averages. although that we were a little warmer today 91 degrees. at 7:00 a.m. it is 78 degrees. coastal showers will end mostly inland showers for tomorrow. again a slight chance for a morning shower because we're in this westerly flow pattern. temps generally in the 80s. some rain-cooled numbers, but still 90 degrees in lakeland. 89 dade city, 87 crystal city. sarasota is at -89d.
6:19 pm
showers and thunderstorms here closer to the east coast. then an active day there pinned pretty close to the east coast and then the outflow boundaries are creating the storms with quite a bit of the dry air aloft. this is high up in the atmosphere, the red color. obviously we are still in the soup here creating the bigger thunderstorms here. that dry air is also stabilizing the atmosphere across much of the south. not as much here in the bay area and the rest of the state of florida. but because of this westerly flow and the front tends to push tha where we get the westerly flow for the next couple of days. tropical storm karl and tropical depression number 13 in case you missed the new storm. karl meanwhile will likely turn further to the north and -- north and eventually to the northwest becoming a category 2 hurricane. also tropical depression 13 which may become a tropical depression will likely stay out to sea, but certainly there and a reminder that we are still in hurricane season. there's the front to the north. of course we have the dry air
6:20 pm
some of it is trying to build back mostly in polk county. there's a front to the north of us on tuesday morning. extra humid for us with the westerly flow. note the chance for the shower before the noon hours. that's what we will get when we have the westerly flow. but like today a lot of the activity will shift off to the east for tomorrow. that front will die out with not super cool dry air behind it. patience on tuesday, rain chance 40%. wednesday, thursday rain chances 20 and 30%. so these are pretty close to the averages. now keep in mind that where we are getting into the second half of september where we are headed towards the dry season that we're not there yet, but it will allow their rain averages to fall off a little bit for their second half of the month. and certainly that you can see the fall leaves. >> yeah, right. we'll see them on tv. >> thanks, steve. the tampa bay heart walk is coming up. we need your help to reach our goal of reaching $100,000. they have agreed to match the

all right, well today is the jetlag edition of our buc's bonus corner. if you bought the bucs would go 1-1 to begin the season you're probably in the majority. but a 33-point loss in week two, that did not sit well with head coach who had some interesting thoughts in our exclusive chat today. all right coach, 16 teams wake up today 1-1. that's kind of how the league goes.
6:25 pm
film, what disappointed you the most? what did you get out of it? >> well what disappointed us the most is an easy one, five turnovers. i mean 5-0 in the turnover categories. you just can't win in the nfl doing it that way. everything else that we're going to talk about all week will be overshadowed by that with small positives that you can take out. but as you said before, dan, there's a lot of 101 teams today -- a lot of 1-1 teams told. d 47. that's indicative of what kind of a team that we are and what we will be, but it was yesterday. >> are you still surprised to see how much pressure that jamis took? >> if you watch that game closely until the last three series of the game, our pass protection was pretty darn good. the issue wasn't protection even though that there was pressure. the issue was that we needed to turn it over or that they would throw in and catch them part.
6:26 pm
either in our route or overthrew a few balls losing doug martin in the game obviously, not good. depending on his temporary currency and their long-term plan in the season that they could force that offense to make some big adjustments. just his absence. >> i mean losing doug is huge, one of the top runningbacks in the league. but you know in charles sims and rogers we have two capable backups. we'll try to plug things in if doug cannot go and play more to those guys and their strengths. because you can't at this point. that we're not going to go to that wish bone or something because we lose a player. that's the nfl. >> during the build up to the game one of the big stories is obviously the adjustments that you'd have to make on their defensive line coming off the injuries. just the overall performance of that line and your thoughts on how they did?
6:27 pm
ayers is another guy that we lost. he was brought here to put pressure on the passer as he did a good job of that in atlanta only playing 20 games yesterday against arizona, you know, the flip side of that is that when he went out, a rookie with his first action on the d- line that he got to play 30 plays with a guy that we're going to -- to need his depth as they move on. howard jones got to play a few more pla able to put pressure on the passer and the four-man rush and then bring in pressure as needed. >> all right, uncut version coming up on wfla.com with a lot of good things talking about the rams and the games coming up. good stuff from the coach. >> a quick turnaround as you said. well don't go anywhere, nightly news is coming your next followed by news channel 8 at 7:00. >> we'll see you then.
