is causing heartache in the bay area. >> plus one down, two to go, the first presidential debate in the record books and news channel 8 is there, a live report from new york coming up. good evening. i'm keith cate. >> i'm jennifer leigh. thank you for joining us this evening. police in haines city are investigating the shooting death of jonathan jordan, a local rap artist. they know who pulled the trigger, but that man has not been charged news channel 8 melissa moreno shows us the growing memorial where family held a vigil tonight. >> reporter: family and friends have been gathering here all evening grieving. right here behind me you can see this growing memorial. he coached his son's football team here and less than a block away is where he was shot. this video shows jonathan jordan smiling ear to ear. his son and teammates are celebrating in the background after a big victory. just hours later his life ended after an argument by the field.

devastated. it was too difficult for his brother to talk. instead of a party for his 32nd birthday, they held a candlelight vigil. >> you got to find some kind of positive way to grieve. people say he'd give the shirt off his back. he'd give you his life. >> reporter: jordan was an aspiring rapper known by everyone as jay green. the shooter was identified as derek denard. he is cooperating and not charged. news channel 8 went to his house. no one answered the claiming self-defense. >> the other person involved in the. >> thing, we interview -- involved in the shooting, we interviewed him the other night and recovered some evidence from him. he's been very cooperative. we consulted the state attorney's office. >> reporter: friends say it was a senseless shooting and a life taken too soon. >> it's hard on everybody. you know what i'm saying? green, he had an effect everybody's life. >> reporter: police are looking for more witnesses to

they're looking at all the facts and evidence in this case before deciding whether or not to charge the shooter. in haines city melissa moreno, news channel 8. >> melissa tells us jordan did have a troubled past. he was acquitted of second degree murder years ago. after this his family said he turned his life around. he had three young children and recently opened his own business. now to your vote and the 2016 presidential election, there was a lot of hype going into this first of three pres hillary clinton and donald trump and it lived up to the billing. it all began with a friendly handshake and smile but turned personal quickly with the candidates trading verbal jabs. abc news anchor lester holt doing his best as moderator trying to rein in the give and take, but he had his work cut out for him tonight. news channel 8's rod carter is the only tampa bay television reporter at the debate there evening joining us live from

these candidates were going after every last vote tonight. >> reporter: i think you said it exactly right. they were cordial at the beginning, but it didn't take long to see what would happen. donald trump and his family just came down here and they're going to the spin area now to have a conversation about the debate and kind of talk about what the debate was in terms of how they felt they did. a lot of other people have come into the area. within moments, as mentioned, clinton and trump sparred on a lot of topics starting with jobs and the economy and who would be best to handle it and a lot of that fight had to do with donald trump's taxes as well. >> i will release my tacks returns against my lawyer's wish -- tax returns against any lawyer's wishes when she releases her 33,000 e-mails that have been deleted. >> reporter: fireworks nearly from the moment the two candidates hit the stage, the lime of questioning beginning with jobs -- line of questioning beginning with jobs

questions about donald trump's taxes. >> it must be something really important, even terrible he's trying to hide. and the financial disclosure statement, they don't give you the tax rate or all the details that tax returns would. it just seems to me this is something the american people deserve to see. i have no reason to believe he's he going to release his tax returns because there's something he's hiding. >> you don't learn that much from tax returns. that i can tell you. you lear disclosure. you should look at that. >> reporter: the topic of racism discussed, trump saying the country needs law and order and saying new york's unconstitutional stop and frisk policy should perhaps be brought back. >> the african american community has been let down by our politicians. they talk good around election time like right now and after the election they said see you later. i'll see you in four years. >> reporter: and, of course, there was the birther issue.

ticket. today governor rick scottish used an emergency rule requiring polluters to notify the public and government agencies if there is a polluting incident. this follows an expose by 8 on your side that revealed for 19 days most of sake and florida's department of environmental protection did not notify the public of this massive sinkhole. the sinkhole swallowed 215 million-gallon of contaminated water and dumped right into aquifer. hydrogeologist sandy nettles tells us until that hole is plugged contaminated material will continue flowing into the aquifer. >> you're coming into the peak of the wet season next month, so you can expect a lot more water to go down that hole. >> meanwhile today tampa bay water confirmed it is keeping two pumps shut down in a well field closest to that sinkhole. the well field provides water to senior and eastern hillsborough county. -- southern and eastern hillsborough county. right now tensions are

the shooting of keith scott. tonight is the second straight night without a curfew in the city. tonight many citizens in charlotte hope to get back to normal. many continue to call for change. jennifer holloway joins us now from our tampa bay news center with nor on the call for resignations among some charlotte city leaders. >> that's right. the situation is far from over as protesters demand resignation of both the city's mayor and police chief. >> if we really are going to get the ut reconciliation we deserve, one has to take a step forward and be willing to reconcile. >> while many charlotte citizens extend a hand towards peace, others are frustrated as new details continue to be released. saturday under public pressure the city released more video of the police confrontation with scott. police say scott had a gun and refused commands to drop it before an officer opened fire. >> based on the totality of what we see, he absolutely was in possession of a handgun.

his belongings. the neighborhood went on lockdown. one driver describes the terrifying scene. >> suddenly just felt like an explosion on the side of my car and glass everywhere. i heard a few pops, maybe two or three, could smell the powder and powder from the bullets just flying by. >> police found two guns and 2,600 rounds of live ammunition inside the shooter's car. investigators don't believe he has connections to terrorism. the department of is giving $20 million to more than 100 law enforcement agencies around the country for body camera programs. the attorney general loretta lynch made that announcement today. this money will help agencies enhance or create body camera programs. this comes after the shooting in both charlotte and tulsa. it started as a high speed chase spanning three counties and ended in a tense standoff on the edge of an overpass. police in southern california say the man was driving a

the game of baseball and then jose fernandez's competitive drive, tonight coaches at alonso high school share their memories of the former student and player. jose fernandez died with two other men when their boat hit a jetty off miami beach. his former coaches knew fernandez was special and would be a star in the big league. news channel 8's peter bernard is at alonso high school where jose truly made his mark. peter, what a loss. >> reporter: keith, they loved him here. this is the school where play baseball, but sometimes his exuberance got the best of him. if these young alonso high ravens baseball players need any inspiration, they only need to look at jose fernandez, his baseball coach thinks back on the day of his first home run. >> he's running around the bases jumping up and down, got this big smile ear to ear. next thing he's taking off his helmet and i'm like whoa, what

too. we could see the slight possibility with a westerly flow, a light flow of seeing a morning coastal shower. 70s, rain cooled numbers today brought temperatures down. even folks that did not see downpours at their homes saw the cool air off those thunderstorms help drop the temperatures but mostly 70s. the humidity is high. those temps won't change much overnight. upper level low kind of spinning across the southeast especially over the state of florida. dry air aloft and we to produce some small hail around the area today, a big reason why we saw those severe thunderstorm warnings issued. as for satellite and radar, still have some offshore shower activity that will continue to move onshore, very light stuff overall but generally partly cloudy skies. other tropics still very much active heading into the second part of the season, especially october see the second peak here. invest 97l a 90% chance of
