penalties and requiring gas station owners to better protect customers. news channel 8's john rogers explains the new changes. good afternoon, the new law kicks in saturday october 1st. it's going to make it a much more serious crime to install a skimmer. skimmers are increasingly being found inside gas pumps throughout tampa bay, and they're becoming more sophisticated. lawmakers want to discourage it. starting saturday, a new law will increase the offense of the crime so criminals >> before, it wasn't taken seriously, it was unknown as a crime. there was a low penalty. >> the law also increases penalties against crooks who have fraudulent credit cards. and gas station owners will be required to take certain security measures to prevent skimmers from being installed. reporting in sarasota, john rogers, news channel 8.

ride sharing companies and hillsborough county. uber driver joe williams was shocked recently when he pulled up here to tia to pick up a rider and was issued more than $700 in tickets. >> do you think you were set up? >> i do. i have no way of proving it, jeff, but that's what i really, really think. >> joe williams has only been driving for the ride sharing service uber for two weeks. he lives in pinellas county, and most of his rides are there. he found out recently, rules are different in hillsborough county. he found this out when an officer knocked on his window at tia. >> i said i'm driving for uber. >> that's against the law, this that and the other. unlawful operation without certificate. >> state senator jeff believes the ptc should be dissolved in hillsborough county, and state law is needed for ride sharing services. >> we have to think about this as how it effects the entire

broke into bell of the ball here in clear water. the organizers say the suspect broke out the glass here and then, if you've been in this place, it holds thousands of prom and hold coming dresses. all of these dresses are accessorized with jewelry. well, the organizers say the suspects came to the jewelry case and took a lot of that jewelry that goes with the dresses. and now they're out of 400 to $500. and they're hoping that the community will step in and help donate some of that jewelry to go with these dresses that these girls will be needing for the upcoming homecoming season. the organization will be able to replace some costume jewelry in the mean time. if you have information, contact the clear water police department. reporting in clear water, news channel 8. the miami marlins honored star pitcher jose fernandez.

cambridge christian school claims civil rights are being violated. melanie michael is live at the school in tampa for us tonight. >> reporter: this story is getting a lot of attention tonight after this lawsuit was filed in federal court today basically saying this team could not broadcast prayer before the game. >> i'm a dad of a young man that plays on the varsity football team. >> reporter: tim is fired up. he tells us he can't believe the football team was from praying over the loud speaker before games. >> i take offense to that. as a citizen of the united states, as well as the head of school of cambridge christian school and as a dad. >> reporter: it started when they made it to the championship game in december. before kickoff, they planned to start with their traditional prayer. but they faced a penalty before they ever took the field. >> every single one of their games they had tried over the loud speaker prior to the games. this is the first time that
