over the world. they stay, eat and play and when they spend their money, we all benefit. even a chilly night on mandalay boulevard on clearwater beach, sidewalks are filled with visitors. >> finest beach in all the caribbean. we have the sugar sand. >> reporter: latin america, brazil, new york, the u.s. west coast and germany, they come from all over. >> it's just sun. in germany it's da numbers are huge. florida florida is enjoying the largest third quarter ever. in pinellas county alone bed tax collections will top $50 million this year, a figure that's grown 60% in five years. >> right now it seems unstoppable. >> reporter: the st. pete clearwater area is leading over other areas in the state. more tourist dollars means less tax dollars for year-round residents. >> when you consider that tourism here in pinellas county

economic impact, about 100,000 jobs, it's really tough to overstate the importance of the tourism economy. >> reporter: steve donovan is selling more rides on his pedicabs as people flock to the area. >> i've seen an increase drastically especially with all the new hotels coming up. there's been a lot more people on the beach. >> reporter: tangible benefits count the ways. >> pays for the training facilities, tropicana field, a lot of th for granted. >> reporter: all this good news despite zika warnings and two hurricanes. all those taxes paid by the tourists saves taxpayers in the county about $700 a year. >> we're selling some unique places in florida, too peter. >> reporter: the west coast of the u.s. is a hot place for people to come from and people are coming here from china. they need to target their money

beat in clearwater, thank you. with just a week and a half left in the season we are tracking the tropics tonight. storm team 8 meteorologist steve jerve joins us now. this storm is not threatening the u.s., but you're keeping an eye on it, as always. >> absolutely. it's strange to be talking about this late in the season, not impossible certainly. the hurricane season runs until the end of november. we do have this late season storm as an area that hurricane center mentioned had some potential for development. it has a name, yes, it's called otto. good ventilation, will likely continue on that westerly track. it remains in the pacific, it would pick up a pacific name. 60 miller wind moving south. you can see the -- mile-per- hour wind moving south.

as we look at the computer models, the forecast is saying which way can this storm potentially go? generally keeping it in the area of the southern caribbean. now that direct move into the west seems likely. of course, no influence on the bay area, but it is a novelty and certainly a threat for the folks in south america. an arrest in texas after a nestwide manhun manhunt. 31-year-old otis mccain was accused of gunning down police officer marconi. six children are dead after a horrific school bus crash in chattanooga, 35 students from kindergarten to 5th grade aboard the bus that ended up on its side, almost sliced in half by the tree it hit. 23 were sent to local hospitals, no word on the

investigation. all eyes in japan are locked on the sea after a powerful 7.3 earthquake struck off the coast of fukushima. a tsunami warning for waves up to 10 feet is still in effect. this is the same area where a nuclear power plant was destroyed by a tsunami five years ago. too close for comfort, some kids in pittsburgh are thankful they walked away from this scary scene. a police officer was chasing a was hit by a van. it sent the officer's car spinning out of control where those teens were standing. one witness describes just how frightening it was. >> i'm still shaken up. you see that in the movies, not real life, you know. it was just kind of scary, but everyone seemed fine beside the officer. he was shaken up. >> the officer had minor injuries and none of the children were injured.

a dangerous crook is on the run in south florida. the man walks into a gas station and viciously beats the clerk alternating between his fist and a metal pipe. the worker were able to fight him off. -- was able to fight him off. this happened last month. it's still under investigation because deputies in broward county need help finding this man. a terrifying rescue on this los angeles river as four stranded the raging waters. fortunately crews got them into a boat and hauled them safely across the river. right now tampa police are still working to track down the driver that slammed into a child and took off. 12-year-old darryle ortega pushed a friend out of the way just before a friend hit him last thursday along east hanna avenue. he now has several broken bones and it will be months before he can walk again.

silver newer model ford fusion there was involved. well, this is what happens when you take an exit ramp too quickly while driving a tractor trailer. the michigan truck driver learned that the hard way. he was thrown from his cab and fortunately pulled to safety by three people passing by. he is expected to be okay, but the tanker was reduced to collared metal and smoldering rubber and plastic. plumes of smoke flames kept firefighters busy for hours. fortunately the old pioneer building was vacant, so no one was injured. still crews asked the community to stay clear due to safety concerns. so how neighborly is this? you have refrigerators, vehicles, all sorts of stuff just piled up left in a local man's yard. the owner of the proper says it's a business, but the county and neighbors aren't buying it.
