with the new york times. holiday danger just outside the door. i parking lots are hotspots for car crashes right now. i am stacie schaible. >> thank you for joining us. we begin with that tragedy in tennessee. a school bus driver in chattanooga is facing charges after the bus he was driving crashed. five children were killed, many more rushed to the hospital. josh benson is joining us from the tampa news center with what may be behind the horrific accident. >> reporter: police arrested johnthony walker and believe the cause of this terrible crash is speed. more than 18 hours after this bus crash took the lives of five young children, people stopped to watch as the wreckage was pulled away from the scene. >> we have of those deaths, three were in the fourth grade, one was a kindergartner and one was a first grader. >> reporter: the mangled metal

>> christmas is not even on my list right now. i just can't think of anything right now. >> reporter: 35 students were on board when the bus flipped on its side, hitting a tree. police say the driver was going well over the 30 miles per hour speed limit before losing control of the bus. now he is facing five counts of vehicular manslaughter, reckless endangerment and reckless driving. >> they would always be with us throughout our lives. this is something we will never forget as a community. >> reporter: school leaders kept classes as usual on tuesday to provide counseling those -- for those who needed it. >> prefer this community. pray for the families that lost their children. >> reporter: while police handled the criminal side, the ntsb will handle the safety side and how it will affect transportation in the future. 12 students are currently in the hospital. six of them are in critical

but are investigators looking into any other causes?>> they have obtained a warrant and will analyze the black box on the bus. they are hoping that will tell them exactly what happened if anything else. >> thank you. and the crash is bringing back traumatic memories for hillsborough county parents after their children's bus crashed last year. the bus landed in an odessa lake with more than 30 students on boar i know you spoke with some of those parents tonight, candace. >> reporter: this really hit close to home for many of those parents who found their child's school bus in this pond last september. for one family, the mother even broke down in tears when she saw the picture from chattanooga. >> it's absolutely horrible. >> reporter: the site of this bus on its side with children inside. it brings back an all too real memory for krishna.

somehow we made it through. ifill lucky. >> reporter: his then seven- year-old daughter was in this bus when it crashed on nine eagles drive september of last year. she and the 30 other people on the bus walked away without serious injury. the driver was cited. investigators say he was speeding and then applied the break and the gas at the same time. now. she was able to process it and move on. she doesn't really know about the bus accident. we try to keep that stuff shielded. >> reporter: some students haven't returned to writing the bus after the accident. their parents say they will likely forever drive their kids to school. krishna believes all students should be asking questions. >> we want to know who is driving our kids, what

hillsborough county tells me anybody can take by getting in touch with the school district and getting your driver's file. krishna helps good will come out of this tragedy. >> i am very curious as to what will happen with the case because i think that will set a precedent. >> reporter: that hillsborough county bus driver was cited for careless driving. he is fighting that citation in court but is no longer with the district. >> do you know, were there any changes made in the district since that local both -- local s hired a new safety instructor since the accident but that was something they were planning on doing and it wasn't in response to the accident. meanwhile, parents tell me they have a consistent bus driver which gives them a little bit of peace. >> candace mccowan reporting live for us. president-elect trump is heading to florida for thanksgiving but not before finishing business in manhattan today. a man who has made it clear that he is no fan of the media went to the new york times 48

saying he does not want an investigation into hillary clinton. we have a look at what is coming out of that meeting today. kind of interesting i would imagine.>> reporter: the times says it was wide-ranging and began with a familiar grievance, the president-elect saying he is not being treated fairly. whether he was there to throw down an olive branch or a the new york times. the paper was a favorite target of his criticism during the campaign. >> i mean the new york times, which i call the failing new york times because it's losing a fortune. >> reporter: staffers who tweeted the hour-long meeting say he began with complaints about how he has been treated but suggests he wants to make peace with the paper and respect that. he said hillary clinton has suffered enough and declared he doesn't condone another email investigation but contends that

"lock her up." >> there is a tradition in american politics that after you win an election, you put these things behind you. >> reporter: the president- elect distanced himself from people on the alternative right but criticized criticisms for steve bannon and breitbart news. he acknowledged his dc hotel is certainly worth more and acknowledged his brand is "hot air." he conflicts of interest and said the law is on his side. the president-elect also told the times he is leaning towards retired general james mattis as defense secretary, that came hours after he twitter teased ben carson as his potential housing secretary. >> no news conference yet from this president-elect. is that something we normally expect as the first few days go

elect trump has not given a full on news conference since july 27. we are still waiting to see one going to get that and we're hoping it is a win and not and if. the president-elect is heading to florida for thanksgiving weekend. we don't know if we are actually going to see that departure and arrival as we would with just about any other president or president-elect. definitely a new way business. his media relations right now, or a little chilly to say the least.>> it's a new day for sure. brian moore live in washington dc, covering that for us. president obama is delivering his nanal presidential medals of freedom. the group of recipients is largely combined of democratic donors and individuals who supported him politically. the list includes ellen degeneres, actors tom hanks and

surveillance video. you can see two people barging into the store and then they start smashing all the cases. one of them points a gun at the employees. they grab several watches before taking off. even though their faces are covered, police hope someone recognizes them. during the holidays, you can expect the roads to be busy but some of the busiest places for drivers are actually parking lots. hundreds of people die each year out of stores. john rodgers is now live in sarasota to explain the problem and it's something you don't usually think about. jacket certainly is a unique problem but it really is a problem. in fact, many stores are hiring off-duty troopers to work in these parking lots this but -- this black friday to address this. in wisconsin, this 92-year-old man had a hard time getting out of his parking lot. surveillance video shows him slam into nine cars on his way out. all across america in parking lots and parking garages,

causing natural flight delays. that likely is weather-related in minneapolis and you can see why. the west coast is fairly quiet. we have a few rain showers and eventually snow showers at higher elevations in the pacific northwest. most of the snow occurring from the minneapolis area points to the arrowhead reason why they -- arrowhead region where they had snow a couple of days ago. you can see where the snow is located at the moment. combined with cooler not much happening in florida. just poke your nose at the window, hardly any clouds in the sky. we will likely pick up a few more clouds the next couple of days. we have a hurricane. this is the latest forming hurricane in the lower caribbean for this time of year. this is quite historic and that way. 74 miles per hour winds. as it gets her as a tropical -- a tropical storm, it will get a pacific name over central america. the hurricane watch is in place
