breaking news. an early morning smash and grab at a tampa gun store. brazen thieves drove a truck through the front window. did they get away th we are live at the scene. >> terror on a university campus. what we are learning this morning about the teenage refugee that police say went on a rampage with car and butcher knife injuring seven students. >> cuba in mourning. news channel 8 is in the island nation as thousands remember fidel castro. good morning, i'm gayle guyardo. >> i'm gene ramirez.

ian filling in. >> it's mild and muggy. temperatures to start the day about 10 above average. we are at 68 in tampa. 65 in apollo beach. 66 in plant city. that is thanks to a wind direction out of the south and east, 5 to 10 miles per hour. we have seen gusts higher than that. it will be breezy into the afternoon. the forecast high temperature, 83 degrees. more than half a dozen above average for this time of the year. max defender8, this morning. that may not be the case later on this week when we track much needed rain chances, more towards thursday. we will talk about those coming up. >> looking forward to that. thank you have each. >> we ant to get you on he roads. it's quiet with an exception here in st. pete, an accident with roadblock 28th street north and 41st avenue. this has been here for a while. it should be out of the way soon. we will keep you updated on that. bay area bridges in the green.

are up to speed. another update in a couple of minutes. gayle, gene, over to you. police are on the scene of an apparent smash-and-grab burglary at a tampa gun store. >> it happened this morning. do we know if any of the guns missing from the store were found or what is going on now. sergeant here on scene in hillsborough county and they say that they have not been able to speak to the owner of the gunshop. they don't know what was taken from the store. if i step aside, you can see one of the walls at the tampa arms company is completely empty. we do not know what the shop looked like before but that wall is empty. a security alarm alerted authorities.

figure out exactly what happened. we are told there was no forced entry to the back of the store but the entire front window of the arms company is gone right now. there are about a dozen shops in this plaza here called the northwest plaza off dale mabry. this is the only shop with apparent damage. we are still working to find out exactly how thieves got in to this armed company. they have not confirmed that information just yet. if you take mobile back live in tampa, the t-mobile store next to the armed company has bars over the window and deputies here confirm that this armed company did not have any bars over the window. again, the front window of the tampa arms company completely gone and there are apparently empty walls inside of that store. back to you. >> that is scary to think that those arms are out in the community in the hands of people that shouldn't be

morning. rescue crews are on the scene of a passenger plane crash in the mountains. 81 people were on board the jet including a top brazilian soccer team. three people were found alive so far. there is no word yet on what may have caused the crash that happened as the plane was preparing to land. right now, questions about the horrifying attack at ohio state university. investigators are trying to determine if the attack terror. it began when 18 year old abdul razak ali artan drove his car on a sidewalk full of pedestrians on the campus of ohio state and then stabbed several of the victims with a butcher knife. students that saw what happened started calling 911. >> i am at ohio state outside of block hall. >> a campus police officer shot

ending the attack. 11 people were taken to the hospital. investigators are looking into the suspect's background. they say he recently posted comments about the treatment of muslims on social media. a former polk county teacher that admitted to having sex with a student more than 20 times as well as two other teenagers wants her sentence reduced. jennifer victor will ask a judge to shave off some of the 22 years prison. ryan highs us at the courthouse. why is victor asking for a lighter sentence? >> reporter: she wants a reduction because she claims the victims were willing participants and she thinks she can get better treatment options if she wasn't in prison. let's go to video. last year she was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for having sex with three teenage boys. in court the judge called the

predator. she was remorseful but given a harsh sentence. she plans to ask for a significant reduction. more details will come out in court. here she is last year when she apologized to the court. listen. school. right now in cuba, thousands are lining up to pay their respects to leader and dictator fidel castro. you can see the scene at cuba's revolution square in havana. jeff patterson is in havana. he has a look at the final farewell. >> today tens of thousands of cubans are coming out to pay their respects to fidel castro. later today a service here in revolution plaza, a place where fidel castro gave famous speeches. three popes have held mass here and this line is just amazing, snaking through the streets of havana and up the memorial as people file by the remains of fidel castro who was cremated several days ago. later this week a funeral procession will wind its way through the nation as hundreds of thousands come out to pay their respects and fidel is

lunchtime. close to 80 agrees, heading for a high around 83 this afternoon. 68 right now in tampa. we are about 10 above average to start the day. 65 right now in venice and 64 in north port. 24-hour temperature change, most spots about 5 to 10 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. these temperatures are warming out in advance of a cold front across the southeast bringing rain to drought stricken regions there. there is a wider look approaching the atlanta area bringing rain. our rain chances increase as the front gets closer to us in a weakened state. we will go with a 20% rain chance heading into the day thursday. boy do we need that rain. it's been a while now. we have reported rainfall once at tampa international in the last six weeks. >> you can feel the mugginess this morning. >> absolutely. you will notice that increase into the afternoon. >> bad hair day, everyone. let's take a look at the maps.

this morning we are getting look at body cam video from a pasco deputy. it shows the moment money kay brae found herself face to face were a pit bull. she struggles with the dog. at one point she fired her gun killing the dog and shooting herself in the finger. >> stay there, brother. virginia -- i shot my finger off.

home. deputy br was there to -- brae was there to investigate a dogfight case. president is expected to announce the pick for health and human services today. nbc news reporting that trump will tap this man, tom price of georgia for the big job. congressman price is an orthopedic surgeon. he is a leading critic of obama care that trump pledge pledged to overhaul. president-elect donald trump will meet with bob core kerr and again with mitt romney this is the second meeting between the president-elect and romney. some of trump's own team oppose romney getting the nod. another candidate for the secretary of state position, david petraeus. he met with trump yesterday. he was forced to resign from

passenger on the flight a refund. the driver accused in a deadly school bus crash in chattanooga is heading to court today. he is facing several charges including vehicular homicide he was behind the wheel of a school bus that careened off the road into a tree. six died and several others were hurt. this morning an investigation into a thanksgiving dinner linked to the deaths of three people. eight elderly people meal at the american legion hall in the san francisco bay area. three died. hospital officials say the victims had symptoms consistent with a food-borne illness. some of it was prepared by volunteers and restaurants prepared some of it. a desperation in the smoky mountains. wildfires are forcing the

on fire making it worse for fire crews. 70 miles per hour winds and bone dry conditions playing the area. i tell you what, that is a hugely popular area this time of year. can you imagine, not only is it causing devastation for the folks but a big tourism industry. >> people go to enjoy the holiday season up in the mountains and now this is what they are facing. >> i have been there many times. wild to see that. the drought across the southeast thankfully i have good news to share. it's on the satellite and radar picture. it's raining in east tennessee helping out the efforts to put out the wildfires. they were waiting on the rain. in fact, the winds in front of the cold front created to intensify the flames. thankfully we have the rain ongoing. not across the tampa bay area where the satellite picture is mainly clear. we will perhaps have rain to track later in the week.
