night. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. later today, the latest in the el ninintriggered storms are expected to hit the california coast. the storm system doused california this week bringing torrential rain and wind stretching an area to the gulf coast. today's storm is not expected to be as powerful as yesterday. floodwaters and mud slides swamped roadways and trapped drivers from san francisco to l.a. danielle nottingham is in uhall, california. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. ten mobile homes in this community were evacuated. we are northwest of los angeles. now, a fire burned here over the summer and it left the area barren. the perfct conditions for mudslides and as you can see

right now to shore up that hillside to stop more debris, water, and mud from flowing through this neighborhood. parts of southern california already soaked by days of rain are bracing for more wet weather this morning, fueled by el nino. heavy rain and strong winds wednesday uprooted massive trees in the san diego area. >> the whole house shook. just for two minutes i hoped my roof didn't go off and me with it. >> reporter: launching tree limbs into homes. >> it literally came where i was sitting. if i didn't move, i don't know. it would definitely hurt. >> reporter: many drivers had to be rescued from their vehicles as roads were transformed into rivers. the deluge saturated hillsides and triggering mudslides that spilled on to highways. >> you can drive along and drive right into it and, all of a sudden, you're up to your windows -- window shield here in mud.

has forced residents, some of them elderly and disabled, to leave their homes. and more rain on for the week and beyond. >> number five on saturday and the sixth storm of the month will hit top of next week and leading to widespread rainfall totals for the entire state of california and nevada and arizona of at least one inch from the coastline from top-to-bottom and we are talking phoenix also getting an inch or two inches of rain. >> reporter: the system has already brought more than a foot of snow to the mountains, helping to recharge the region's snow pack. forecasters only expect the impact of el nino to get worse. as the winter drags on. officials says it take several storms like these to reverse the effects of a four-year drought. >> danielle nottingham, thank you. a series of earthquakes rattled oklahoma, but, so far, no significant damage or injuries are reported. the quakes hit last night within minutes of each other. most were centered in northwest oklahoho. the strongest was a magnitude 4.8.

recorded. they were felt as far north as wichita, kansas. economic tremor has engulfed the chinese stock market where trading was halted following a massive sell-off. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchangeo explain what is going on. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it was the second day long trading spension this week. this morning, stocks on the benchmark shanghai composite index nose-dived 7% half an hour after the market opened and that triggered new regulations that shut down trading. the big picture issue is the chinese economy, which is the second largest in the world, is just not performing well. today, more bad manufacturing data was announced and the chinese bank devalued its currency. concerns over the chinese economy sent stocks in the u.s. to a two-month low yesterday. the dow suffered a triple digit loss for the second tiue in three days, losing 252 points. the s&p lost 26 points.

when it's devalued it makes good sold in u.s. dollars more expensive so that hurts demand in exports and elsewhere. china is a big export of oil and the slowing of economy has put a hole in the oil economy. >> see you later, jill. the powerball lottery jackpot will grow into the largest in american history after no one beat the odds last night. lottery officials say no player picked all six numbers for the grand prize worth an estimated $500,000. those numbers were 2, 11, 47, 62, 63, and the powerball 17. the estimated jackpot for saturday's drawing is a whopping $675 million! it could take weeks to confirm if north korea actually detonated a hydrogen bomb, and there is growing doubt about the

north korea said yesterday that it has successfully tested a miniaturized h-bomb, but the white house says early analysis is not consistent with an h-bomb test, and the south korean spy agency says the explosive yield was too small for a hydrogen bomb. the texas state trooper who arrested a woman during a contentious traffic stop last summer has been indicted and fired. he is charged with perry. the woman later died in a jail cell. omar villafranca reports from dallas. >> get out of the car! i will light you up! >> wow. >> reporter: sandra bland's controversial arrest was caught on a police cruiser dash cam last summer. >> right, yeye. yeah, let's take this to court. >> reporter: a grand jury now says it didn't go down as texas state trooper brian encinia claimed. he was indicted on friday with perjury. >> in his affidavit he stated he removed her from the vehicle to conduct -- to further conduct a safer traffic investigation and

>> reporter: bland was booked for assault and jailed. she hanged herself three days later while ststl incarcerated. bland's family says the grand jury didn't go far enough. >> why not charge him with false imprisonment and falsification of police record and documentatioand why not charge him with battery and assault so that we see sandra enendure on that dash cam video. >> you're about to break my wrist! oo. >> reporter: bland's fame has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against encinia. if convicted of perjury, encinia could face one year in jail and $4,000 fine. omar villafranca, cbs news, dallas. a dash cam recording captures a florida woman's final minutes after police forcibly removed her from a hospital. the audio and video records barbara dawson in distress last month as an officer takes her

cruiser and she collapses about two feet from the car. nearly 18 minutes go by before dawson is readmitted to the hospital. she was pronounced dead an hour later. her family is now suing the police and the hospital. vice president joe biden says he regrets not running for president every day. biden announced last october that he wouldn't run because he ran out of time while his family mourned the death of his son beau. biden told a connecticut tv station that it was the right decision for his family, at the time. senator ted cruz responded to donald trump's claim concerning cruz's eligibility to be president. cruz was born in canada to an american mother. most legal experts agree that makes cruz a natural born citizen as required by the constitution. but trump says that raises questions and potential problems for the gop. cruz says it's not an issue. >> look. as a legal matter, the question

settled law that the child of a u.s. citizen born abroad is a national born citizen. >> supreme court has ruled on the issue of who is or isn't a natural born citizen. trump suggests cruz go to court immediately to clear the issue up once and for all. coming up on "cbs this morning," we will talk to "face the nation" moderator john dickerson about the cruz eligibility issue. president obama is certain to veto a bill that just landed on his desk. a measure to repeal most of the affordable care act. the house approved the bill yesterday. it had already passed the senate. besides repealing much of obamacare, the bill also defunds planned parenthood for a year. coming up onhe "morning news." a double dose of bad news for chipotle chipotle. chipotle takes a big hit among a food investigation. later, a periscope hit. why tens of thousands are

at least 20 universities have banned or restricted hoverboards. the hot christmas gift is literally too hot sometimes and several have caught fire. some riders have injured themselves from falls and collisions. puddle hoppers are stars on periscope. a tennessee high school basketball team hit by a hazing scandal. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. "chattanooga times free press" reports a high school's basketball team has been cancelled after allegations of the rape of a team member. police arrested three players of ooltewah basketball team. they are accused of raping a player on their team in an apparent hazing last month. the teamte needed surgery. the uk's "daily mail" reports on a so-called jogger jewel thief who has robbed half a dozen jewelry stores in less

police say she and her accomplice hit a north carolina store on monday. they are accused of robbing jewelry stores and hauling over $500,000 worth of jewels. "usa today" reports on a massive review planned by the pentagon of medals issued since 9/11. more than a hundred medals are being reconsidered for an upgrade for the highest award in batttt and combat. the medal of honor. 17 medals have been awarded since 2001. "wired" reports a puddle in england captures the internet's attention for hours. this puddle in new castle wasn't deep, just very wide. and broadcast live via periscope for six hours as people tried various methods to cross. some people walked straight through. others left to cross as 70,000 people watched around the world. one person even brought a raft.

"the force awakens" should get a big boost when it opens in china. fans upset about the lack of female characters in "star wars" toys and games are getting rewarded. hasbro is adding the female hero rey to its themed monopoly game and follows an outcry on social media. the company says rey wasn't originally included to avoid revealing a plot line. on the cbs "moneywatch," chipotle's latest outbreak investigation. and a mug for coffee lovers. jill wagner is at the new w rk stock exchange with that and more.

as part of an investigation for a norovirus outbreak in a california restaurant. it took place last august. there was a separara norovirus outbreak at several chipotle stores in boston and e. coli outbreak at several chipotle stores. last month sales at their stores fell 30%. macy's is eliminating 4,000 jobs nationwide so that includes sales associates, back office positions, and executives. it's part after restructuring plan following weak holiday sales. sales in november and december were down nearly 5%. macy's blames the unseasonably warm weather. about 80%% of the sales decline can be attributed to the lack of sales in cold weather gear. the consumer electronics show is in las vegas. netflix is now in 130 countries. netflix added arabic and korean and chinese to the languages it supports. netflix is available on any
