billion. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we are following breakg news from the music world. pop icon david bowie has died after a battle with cancer. he was 69 years old. mark phillips is in london with a look at the singer's groundbreaking career. mark, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the announcement was a brief one this morning and it caused shock, not just in the music world and the broader cultural world, but right around the world, in fact, such was the influence of david bowie's character and characters over the course of his career. he died yesterday, according to a family release on twitter, surrounded by family and after, as you say, an 18-month battle with cancer. reflections about david bowie's

just from the music world but from the political world as well. the british prime minister called him a pop genius this morning, a master of reinvention who kept getting it right and, indeed, any appreciation of bowie's life, any obituary has to deal with more than one character but with a series of rock and artistic characters he created over the course of his career, beginning probably with the one people find most familiar, the ziggy stardust, "major tom" character which was one of his major hits, but his influence and his career through two or three more decades of rock and pop is just beginning to be appreciated now. the shocking news that he has died. >> indeed. truly shocking. he just put out a cd on friday and definitely no one expected this. very few peopop, i think, knew he was battling cancer. mark phillips in london, thank

mexico has started to extradite el chapo to the united states. the cartel leader known as el chapo was captured friday after a dramatic manhunt. we are learning new detas about actor sean penn's role in the apprehension of the world's most wanted drug lord. don champion reports. >> reporter: drug kingpin joaquin "el chapo" guzman is back in prison after he tumbled out of six months ago, but he had his days may be numbered. mexican authorities have begun the process to send him to the united states. while most of his lawyers are exciting extradition, a news source told cbs news el cho to be in the u.s. the next four for six weeks. gus guzman was captured friday after a violent shoot-out with mexicacagreens. he had been on the june since july and always managing to stay one step ahead of investigators. his downfall may have been a

october. mexico's attorney general said guzman reached out to producers and actors because he wanted to make a biographical deal about himself. actress kate delastillo brought penn and guzman together and the pair was photographed during a secret rendezvous in a mexican jungle and authorities said that meeting helped them find el chapo's hideout. after years of discovering he was in the drug trade, guzman told penn and "rolling stone" magazine, quote, i supply more her ow, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world. those words may come back to haunt guzman if he eventually faces trial in the u.s. don champion, cbs news, new york. lottery officials say the powerball jackpot has grown to the largest in world history. it is now an estimated $1.3 billion. brian webb reports on the growing excitement ahead of the next drawing.

olsen's boyfriend who is a local artist who with is in florence, but they say they have no suspect. a possible new threat. a tipster tells police the gunman behind the ambush of an officer in his car last week is part of a larger group of radicals. they may be planning more attacks. police and the fbi are investigating the credibility of that tip. in southwest florida, residents are cleaning up this morning after a dangerous tornado roared through saturday evening. the twister damaged homes and scattered debris for miles in cape coral. it ripped down trees and power lines, but there were no serious injuries. hollywood's biggest stars gathered in beverly hills last night for the annual golden globe awards. the globes are seen as the early indicator who might take home an oscar next month. chris martinez has more on the night's surprises and big winners. >> and the golden globe goes to

jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. stocks in asia sharp lower following wall street's losses. shanghai composite dropped 5%. the nikkei is closed for a holiday. the markets in the u.s. reopened in a few hours after a tumultuous week on wall stet that left the indices in the red. dow plunged 1,082 points last week. that is more than 6%. s&p 500 dropped 122 points. also losing about 6%. the nasdaq fell 364 points, or more than 7%. we are getting our first lolo at general motors buick and vision crossover. the first new vehicle that is in fully manufactured and imported from china. the envision will arrive in late spring. one expert thinks americans don't care where their cars are made. a children's cold syrup is being recalled due to incorrect dosing instructions.

the country. in sports, so far, the nfl playoffs, each wildcard team has advanced to the divisional playoffs. green bay's aaron rodgers threw for a pair of touchdowns and the packers ran for two scores. green bay beat the redskins 35-18. in minnesota, the game time temperature was minus 6 with a minus 24 windchill. the game came down to a 27-yard field goal attempt by the vikings blair walsh with 26 seconds left. he had made three previous attempts but missed this one. the seattle seahawks hung on to beat minnesota 10-9. and so here is what the playoff picture looks like going into this weekend's divisional round. new england will take on kansas city. the broncos will see the pittsburgh steelers. both of those matchups are right here on cbs. seattle will go on the road against carolina. and green bay plays arizona.
