studio making his final pitch to voters. >> people in florida and other states head to the polls as campaign 2016 reaches a critical point. vanessa borge. starts right now. we begin with campaign 2016 and the fight for florida. it is primary day here in the sunshine state and the steaks are high as voters head to the polls. 5 states heading to the polls, here is a look. >> 691 delegates in illinois, missouri, north carolina, ohio, and the biggest prize, florida. but unlike republicans, the state is not win or take all for democrats. >> republicans have nearly 400 delegates up for grabs across the same 5 states. >> both florida and ohio are win or take all, we are once again

cbs 4's gaby fleischman is live in fort lauderdale. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, here at coral roads mall, this is precinct 14 and 36 station, we have seen a steady stream of voters going in here to cast their ballots, most of the voters we spoke with say the process was simple and they were in and out in less than 5 minutes. voters shuffling in across south florida to make sure their vote counts. >> this is my first time voting, i am really excited. it was a little nerve-wracking, i thought i would mess up but it was easy. >> i got here after 6:30 to avoid a line but there was no line yet. >> people who cast their ballot, proud to voice support for their pick. >> rubio >> rubio. >> donald trump. >> hillary clinton. >> in broward more than 157,000

in miami-dade that is more than 200,000 and more than 2 million voted state wide. it is a hotly contested campaign appearing to galvanizing voters. >> i think people are fed up with how politics is going. >> i believe we need a big change, we need a non-politician. >> election officials ecpect a solid turn-- expect a solid turn out compared to previous. >> 35-40%. >> the supervisor of elections saying long lines shouldn't be a problem. electronic check-in should speed up the process, provided you have your id. voters who cast ballots say everything went smoothly for them and encouraging others to get out and vote. >> i called my friends, people that usually do not vote. >> get off your butts, we have a chance to take our country back. >> reporter: there are people holding signs showing their support for donald trump. election officials want to remind people to check polling location before heading out

florida's primary vote and took the chance to land some jabs against hillary clinton and trump. >> i think my concerns about his candidacy-- he will lose, divide the republican party, the rhetoric he continues to use is outrageous. >> young marco rubio supporters hopeful. he is facing a tough battle as he tries to win the home town crowd, recent polls show him a distant second to donald trump in florida. rubio arrived home to a roaring crowd. choosing to spend what could be his last night as a presidential candidate just blocks away from where his political career started as a west miami commissioner. >> we don't know-- if it is

votes, they could come from our neighbors, family members, lets make sure everyone votes tomorrow. >> reporter: that was senator marco rubio last night at west miami. these are live pictures right now of precinct 379, fire station number 2, there you see voters waiting to cast ballots here, polls open until 7:00 tonight. rubio is very optimistic and will be having a watch party and cbs 4 news will be there. marybel mare lel, cbs 4 news. >> talk about the man enough and he appears, marco rubio joining us in studio, senator, thank you for being here, on a very, very busy day for your campaign, not just here in south florida but across the state and other states. the polls officially open. you voted early but people still getting out and exercising the right to vote. do you feel, now that the day is finally here in florida, that you have done all you can for the best position?

it is up to the voters to turn up and vote. if we have a big vote in south florida, we will win the state. i am very confident in that. we see that internally, in all the analysis we have done, if we have a higher than normal turn out in south florida, we will win this election. >> is it hard for you to justify maybe donors and voters saying, we are looking at tols and they-- polls and they are showing something different. >> no, polling is out of control, done in ways not scientifically solid. bernie sanders trailed in every poll in michigan, the average-- he was trailing by 20 points in michigan, in a single poll not showing him win and then beats hillary clinton in michigan. i cause down 20 in virginia and won by a point to donald trump. if we had more one day i think we would have won, we still had 16 delegates, he got 17. my point is polling is skewed now with cell phones and all the things going on, you have to put those aside and understand that

they used to be and more often wrong than rieth. donors and supporters know that. >> the polling has gotten out of control, some would argue the campaign in general is outlet of control, off the rails at some point. do you have any regrets about any of the negative back and forth that you have been a part of? and on the receiving end? >> i haven't been a part of it except one time, one day. i already said i would do it differently. that is one day. donald trump has done it for 12 months, that is not even fair comparison. i thing it is destructive. we are now a country where people are at each other's throat. just because you disgree on public policy, people hate each other, you have seen violence breaking out at rallies, not good for america, if we are not a country that can have a respectful debate about tax policy and health care policy, we are in a lot of trouble. how will we solve these problems? we need to start solving problems, we are running out of time or will be the first americans to leave our children worse off than ourselves.

kidvise a chance to be the freeest and most prosperous that is ever lived. >> how can this party unite? going into general election, no matter the nominee, do you see unification in the cycle? >> i thing it depends on the nom. i know i can unite the party and i am doing it in many ways. i don't think we will unite behind donald trump. there is a sersage of republicans that will-- percentage of republicans that will never vote for him. i know people are watching, really angry, think voting for donald trump will send a message. it might, but ultimately in november we will lose and the message you will be left with is president hillary clinton, and if you are a republican, i doubt that is what you want. >> a grueling process, you have been all over the country talking with hundreds of thousands of people, no doubt. in this process what have you learned most about yourself? >> i don't know about myself, i

such little sleep, but i learned a bout the country. america is not a government, it is a people, we have a government and our gum is broken but -- government is broken but our country is still great. we have problems but if we fix them we will be greater than we have ever been. if we don't, we will be the first generation leaving kids worse off. i know we will do the right things, this campaign has increased my faith in the american people. no matter what happened at the end of the day, we will do the right thing and we will get this country right again. >> senator marco rubio, thanks for being with us, have a great day. >> on the democrat side, hillary clinton will hold a primary night event in west palm beach tonight, monday she was in north carolina and chicago holding a rally at a union facility. illinois is a state where recent polls show she is trailing sanders. hillary leads sanders by a wide

thankfully not now, some areas dealing with fogs, so the low beams will be helpful. later on, maybe. keep the umbrella in the back seat of the car, there could be a few showers. all and all the rain chance remaining fairly low today, really the big story has been the fact that it has been so foggy and misty and hazy but thankfully we are starting to see improvement. in fact, that is the case live from our biscayne bay camera in miami and lauderdale by the sea resort camera, the winds have calmed down and that is part of the reason we have the dense fog form this morning. checking on visibility, broward county looking good, seeing visibility up to 10 miles stretching pompano beach to fort lauderdale and oakland park. miami, a different story because the winds are fairly light and calm, in fact, west kendall visibility down to 3 miles and 4

earlier, less than 1/4 of a mile. in broward county the winds kicked into gear westside to 6 miles an hour. during the day we will see a southwesterly southerly flow. radar and satellite is quiet across much of the state. good news for folks headed to the polls to vote. as we look at future radar, later this afternoon, yes, you could see a couple showers if you are planning to head to vote after you pick up the kids from school or running errands or headed in the evening there could be a few spotty showers. remember the polls are open until 7:00 p.m. we are seeing low to mid 70s broward in and dade, upper 70s through the keys and certainly muggy out there. the rest of the week, similar lows, 70s central florida, cooler across the big ben and han handle with upper 60s there. rest of the u.s., 40s for new england, dc. 60 for atlanta, memphis, 70s new

according to the new york times the obama administration also announced it will allow individuals to travel to cuba for people to people educational trips and lift limits on the use of american dollars with transactions in cuba. this all comes ahead of president obama's historic visit to the island next week. news across america, 3 chicago police officers are recovering this morning after being shot wile on duty. >> inside police officers investigating reported drug activity. they observed a man and woman acting suspiciously. the man ran in twoon 2 buildings and-- between 2 buildings, the man was killed and the woman was taken into custody. the officers are being treated for nonlife threatening injuries. a massive house fire in maryland. 8 of the firefighters are recovering after the front part

video shows them trying to put out the raging fire when the house tumbled. thankfully everyone was able to escape safely. police in maryland say a detective was killed by friendly fire during an ambush outside a police-- ambush outside a police station. the under cover officer arrived in the middle of the fire fight. in confusion, the detective was hit by a bullet from a fellow officer. the gunman and 2 brothers who recorded the whole thing have been arrested. we are learning new details about an amtrak train derailment in southwest kansas. the national transportation safety board thinks a separate car accident may have caused the train to go off the tracks. the train was careying more than 140 people when several cars derailed early yesterday morning. the accident happened moments after an engineer noticed a significant bend in a rail and applied the emergency brakes. at least 32 people were hurt, 2

here is a check of the rest of your tuesday morning headlines, it happened again, a man gropes a woman as she sgoes for a walk in-- goes for a walk in coral gables and this time robbed her. >> she was along granada boulevard, one of the busierrential streets, a man groped her and took her belongings. he was about 35 and hispanic with medium complexion between 5'8 and 5' 10, medium build, bald with brown eyes and bushy eye brows, and drove off in a white man. a man was shot and killed in florida city. the victim is a white male in his late 20s, according to investigators he was riding his bike near northwest 14th and 8th avenue when shot, air liftd to

many voters say the process was simple and took a couple minutes. voters did show up early to cast ballots, many before heading to work. efections officials aren't expecting long lines because a new electronic check-in system that is supposed to speed up the process. they want to remind people you have to vote at your assigned precinct, you will need a valid id, and because florida is a closed primary state you have to be a registered democrat or republican to vote for your party's presidential nominee today. so far more than 150,000 peep have already voted early or through absentee ballots in broward, in miami-dade that is nearly 200,000. across the state 2 million people have cast their ballots. voters say the process was quick and are encouraging others to get out and do their civic duty. >> i got here a little after 6:30 to avoid what i would would be a line but there was no line.

her place as the democrat candidate, up in florida by a large number and other states with the exception of illinois big super delegate count playing into her favor once you get to the convention. >> we are in the state of florida, this is rubio's state, we will have him in studio, we just had him in studio earlier. what do you think is the reason behind him not having as much support in his state as compared to donald trump? >> it is difficult to say, ultimately i think the attacks on donald trump at the debate, the finger jokes, talking about donald trump wetting himself in the debate, it came back to bite him. i think he regrets it, he says he did, it was an embarrassment to his children and family. i think that hurt him and turned him off by voter believing in his positive message up to that point. >> a lot about endorsement s, carson, christie joining behind

the fact jeb bush didn't support anyone, do you think anyone? particularly rubio? >> i don't think it hurt him large degree, had he come out immediately and endorsed him, it would have given a small boost. considering he didn't endorse anybody and is yet to, i think he is hedging at lets wait until the process gets farther and we will see if i endorse anybody. i think that is what jeb will do. >> he was saying earlier when lauren was interviewing him, don't look at the polls. how likely is it today? do you really think he is pull it out in florida? >> it comes down to hispanic turnout. if it is a large hispanic turnout, i think it will work in his favor. ted cruz is pulling a lot, kasich is pulling a lot of votes and those votes are getting taken away from marco and going to donald trump. >> the senator expressed concerns how difficult it would

the gop nominee if it is donald trump. they took a pledge saying we will support each other but he seems to be wavering saying it is hard to stand potentially what donald trump could stand for as a candidate. how do you think that the gop gets it together for the general? >> it is not just rubio, it is kasich, it is getting harder and harder to back donald trump if he is going to be the nominee. ultimately it will come down to whether you will have a broken convention or not. if you are, it is fireworks in cleveland to determine, are we really going to put donald trump as our nominee against hillary clinton? and many people say he has no shot against hillary clinton. i would be one of them. >> you were telling us that earlier. you think out of all the candidates up now against hillary clinton, you only believe rubio would really pull it out. in the state of florida. >> in the state of florida i thing he would have the best shot, that is not even to say he

new this morning, pope francis announced a date for the canonization of mother theresa, she will become a saint sunday september 4, francis cleared mother theresa for sainthood in december. she earned several international honors, including nobel peace price in 1979. she died in 1997 at the age of 87.

now to a consumer alert, if you get a call from the irs asking thooverify your-- to verify your information, hang up the phone. that is now the the irs works, scammers are asking people for personal information like social security numbers or financial information like bank numbers or credit cards. the irs says it does not call taxpayers and will never ask for payment information over the phone. a bombshell admission from the national football league, the top health and safety officer admitted there is a link between football related head injuries and cte.
