the defense has a trick up their sleeve in a sex tape lawsuit. hillary clinton now trails bernie sanders in some states. she says she is not worried. but we will show you why she clearly is. we start the show with breaking news this afternoon on the now tampa bay. a school bus crash with 31 elementary-aged kids on board. this is right at callie road. you can see this video taken a short time ago. right now all southbound lanes are blocked. we're being told at least five kids have been taken to the hospital. all of those children from summerfield crossing elementary school. right now we have nicole revet on the phone from fire rescue. what can you tell us right now, nicole. >> reporter: good evening. fire rescue responded to a report of an accident around 2:45 this afternoon. we had our engine 3 and truck
4:02 pm
children on board the bus. we did have five students that were expressing need to be transported to the hospital. and we were able to have them transported with non-life- threatening injuries. >> we have been watching these feeds since the accident happened. you might have said it but we couldn't hear you. what can you tell us about the driver of the other car? >> we did have two patients on top of the five students that were transported. but all were transported with non-life-threatening injuries. so that's a positive in this situation. >> for sure. nicole, can you give us more information on the kids injured and how they are doing right now. 31 were on the bus. we have been seeing video of people being loaded on stretchers.
4:03 pm
>> reporter: we tend to take that into consideration when you have children that are of younger age, especially with multiple students being on the bus. it seems to be a little bit of a scary situation. so we do a thorough job when we go through and triage to make sure that the students are okay and we do a good job coordinating through the school board system of hillsborough to make sure that parents are informed and make sure that the children are transported where the parents wish them to go. none of the injuries were life- threatening. and the information is being transported in reference to where they're going and how they're going as being relayed to the school board and the school board are able to answer the questions for the parents. >> nicole, we really appreciate you being with us this information. >> thank you, laura. you have a good night. >> you too.
4:04 pm
marisela on the scene right now. this is happening at us-301 and callie road. is that road still closed, marisela. >> reporter: it is. and i'm going to show you right here, they are not letting anybody pass through. so a lot of the drivers that are on us-31 have to come off of callie road. they cannot come through. they just removed the car. i do have a 10-year-old boy who was on the bus. sean, describe to me what happened. >> well, it was -- like i was just playing on my phone. and when the bus was on a turn and i look up, the whole bus just starts flying up. and i fly up and i hit my head. when i look on the side of the bus, there's a car and we crashed. when everything stopped, everybody started crying. two people were hurt. and then after a while, when we got off, i started looking at the bus and i was just
4:05 pm
seen that happen before. and i'm just worried for everyone that got hurt. and -- i don't even know because this is new. i don't even know. >> reporter: you said that before the crash, everybody -- you thought everybody was going too fast. can you tell me about that? >> well, the two cars were -- i thought they were going too fast because normally the bus -- there's something going fast, the bus is going fast too. everyone was doing fine. and then people were just screaming and crying and two people were hurt after the -- after the bus stopped. >> reporter: and, mom, you're probably thankful that he is okay and a lot of the students are okay. >> yes, i am. >> reporter: you got a call. >> i got a call and said there was an accident but they didn't
4:06 pm
>> reporter: when you saw it, were you terrified? you can't imagine this. >> it was scary until i was able to speak to him and make sure that he was okay. >> reporter: a lot of the students on the bus are going home now. >> yes. he is fine. >> reporter: thank you for talking. a lot of the students just left. but the bus involved in the accident is still there. we're going to try to get more information. marisela burgos, abc action news. >> thank you, marisela. we will continue to follow this story. you were just speaking with that young man. i can imagine how terrifying it was for all of them. what is the scene like? it just seems like it had to be chaotic. especially around this time of the day. >> reporter: and when we were driving up, it was hard for us to even get up close to the scene. we were stuck in a little bit of traffic. probably longer than you would experience if this was open. so there were a ton of cars. in fact, we even saw a
4:07 pm
say 100 to 200 feet away from this one that had nothing to do with it. there were a lot of drivers on the road and a lot of people that need to be careful when they're on the road. but you can still see this is an active scene. they're going to take their time. a lot of people involved. to the right side where the accident happened, the students were just all piled up with parents and obviously hillsborough county school employees as well as they were waiting to figure out, you know, what was going to happen next. that was just in front of the gas station. so everybody was huddled up there for a period of time before they brought that other second school bus. then they loaded up most of those students. like i said, just like sean, he can go home with his mom. the students were able to get on the bus or go home with their parents. still an active scene. you can see the bus there. we still need to figure out exactly what authorities say happened here this afternoon.
4:08 pm
>> all right, marisela. thank you. we will continue to follow that story throughout the hour. right now a pasco county day care worker accused of throwing water in the face of a boy with autism. that boy just three years old. apparently this isn't the first time she is accused of doing something this awful. >> reporter: laura, this happened just after christmas here at children's nest day care in lutz. it all started when a 3-year- old autistic boy was playing with his teacher's water bottle. that apparently set her off. that teacher is tiffany littlepage. she is charged with child abuse after dumping water on that child's head and forcefully throwing it in the child's face. a teacher's aide later told
4:09 pm
them. >> we would never, it goes without saying, allow anyone to target any child for any special discipline. that's not how we do things. it's not appropriate. it's not how we manage or it's not how we handle and teach children. >> reporter: you see here we were in court this afternoon as littlepage faced a judge. she was given a $3,000 bond. she only worked at the day care here for four months. the owner says she went through all of the necessary screenings. and he believes that she and all the teachers here were adequately trained to handle all children, including those with autism. live in lutz, i'm eric waxler for the now tampa bay. >> let's look at current conditions outside right now. not a bad looking day at all. a few more clouds today than yesterday. it was chilly this morning.
4:10 pm
in fact we woke up and we had the frost advisory for citrus and hernando counties. cold air with temperatures in the upper 30s this morning. the rest of us in the 40s. tampa just under 50 degrees at 49. st. pete at 53. certainly below average for this time of year. so the cold air this time around has hung out with us a little longer than the last series of fronts that have rolled through. right now temps in the upper 50s to lower 60s. temperatures won't be as cold tonight because of the cloud cover. we have to look upstream. look at this shield of clouds over the gulf of mexico. there is a low that will develop here. we will talk about the potential for severe weather happens over the weekend in just a few minutes, laura. >> thank you, ivan. a bus carrying 31 involved in a crash. right now. breaking news story when we

4:12 pm
clinton tied with sanders. in new hampshire, sanders has opened a wide lead over the long-time front runner, 53% to clinton's 47%. >> i don't feel it's a good reflection about who will come out on caucus night. >> reporter: she is worried, hammering sanders on everything. >> there was a loophole. my opponent voted for it. at the end of three business days you get that gun whether they have finished the background check or not. >> reporter: sanders not releasing a tax plan. >> my friend sanders says he will lay out his tax plan before the caucus. i hope he hurries up. you deserve to see the comparisons. >> reporter: yesterday chalaza tacked sand -- chelsea tackled health care. sanders has not mentioned clinton much lately except this comment. >> secretary clinton and her
4:13 pm
>> reporter: all of this with less than three weeks to the first vote in the iowa caucus. for the now, i'm todd walker. >> right now it's looking pretty likely we will have a winner after tonight's $1.5 billion powerball drawing. a representative with the lottery commission is now saying nearly 86% of possible number combinations have been selected nationwide. and ticket sales, well, they're still happening right now with lines like, well, what you're about to see on the screen in just a moment. the jackpot right now the largest in world history. if no one wins again, saturday's drawing will be an estimated $2 billion. and check this out. they finally got the billboards updated around tampa bay. before they only had room for 999 and then the million. now we finally can sit in traffic and dream of not
4:14 pm
catch a glimpse of that 1.5b on the sign. and another warning for you about the powerball. apparently there are a lot of scams out there. some going on online right now. one called usa powerball sin de syndicate. it has players buy online, purchasing shares, saying the winnings will be divided up equally. a lot of people are doing it. just so you know under florida law, you can't buy a lottery ticket online, over the phone or by mail. you can only get one at an actual stores. and you can't get calls saying that you won. if someone trying to contact you on the phone, don't believe it. you can go ahead and download our free abc action news app and we will send you the
4:15 pm
by now we know our chances of winning powerball are one in 292 million. we wanted to break it down for you even more. since so many of us are willing to bet against the ridiculous odds these days. we set up with a statistician to try to crunch the numbers in your favor. >> there is no see c it's all random. >> reporter: random but statisticians say there may be a few ways to stack the cards in your favor. one, buy more tickets. two, realize that numbers don't come due. >> a lot of people think i'm going to play the same numbers and my numbers, i feel it, they're coming. that's not case. >> reporter: don't just focus on special dates like birthdays. even with these pointers, experts say your chances will barely, and i mean barely, increase. think of pennies stacked as
4:16 pm
experts say if you buy a thousand tickets, you have the same chance of winning as picking a penny from the single stack. >> i rounded it off to three inches. that would mean four baseballs in a foot. we have 5,280 feet in a mile. four baseballs per foot. that would be 21,120 baseballs in a mile. then i went to google and looked how many miles between cleveland and l.a., it's about 2300 miles. if you multiply this times this, you get 29,589,760 baseballs. >> reporter: that's still a long way off from 292 million. holcomb says you could line the baseballs back and forth between cleveland and los angeles almost six times. >> you're saying there's a chance.
4:17 pm
>> reporter: for the now, i'm dominique ricks. >> the only number that i care about is $1.5 billion. >> i'll be here tomorrow for work. >> here is the thing, somebody always wins at some point. >> somebody is going to win. >> hopefully a group of people and hopefully they will give most of it away because my goodness, how could you spend all of that money in a lifetime. you can't. i guess, you could if you were a rookie. but otherwise most of us cannot. temperatures in the 50s to 60s. kind of a raw day out there. cool and overcast. skies taking over here. so it feels like winter. and it is. our florida winter anyway. that's about as cool as we can take. anything below that, it starts getting ridiculous. this is an el nino winter. we don't get the fronts rolling through. clear skies. cool weather. we have this active tropical jet here. think of this like the train
4:18 pm
the storms won't go north or south. they follow the cloud shield that you see there. and guess what, we are in the bulls eye there for the next storm coming in. severe weather potential is still a timing and a precise location situation here. look at this. friday, 11:00, a very heavy band of showers and thunderstorms rolling in. potential for severe storms. there is going to be spin in the atmosphere. some of the storms could rotate on us here. the question is instability. and that is one of the ingredients for severe weather. right now. enough heating and moisture coming ahead of it, then we're game for some nasty norm thunderstorms -- nasty thunderstorms. that is like what we had last weekend with cape coral. we will watch this closely. but the time frame looks to be early friday through the midday hour. and then like every other storm
4:19 pm
and we have more to come heading into the weekend. we will detail that in a few minutes. upper 40s to low 50s tonight. we are talking about a milder night certainly. look at tomorrow, already the changes. upper 60s. pushing 70 degrees. i think we will be in the 70s before the storms hit on friday. we will be talking about what happens to the temperatures behind the front in a few minutes. hulk hogan back in court on his sex tape case. he is focusing on something that you need real muscle for. who wouldn't work at the bus, getting a signing bonus, make 10 bucks an hour. a job fair with great perks. the now tampa bay will be back
4:20 pm
>> welcome back to the new tampa bay. i want $100 million, brother. no. seriously. that's what hulk hogan is demanding in a courtroom. it's a sex, lies and videotape thing. hogan is suing for this. a video of him having sex back in 2012. he says the company violated his privacy. the company is making public the results of an fbi claim shows that it has to do with hogan ruining his own reputation, not them. hogan is ready for court and apparently another chance at the ring. >> i'm trying for another title shot. i'm getting in good shape. the belly is gone. the armed are jacked up. looking for another giant to slam.
4:21 pm
a full trial will begin on march 7th. check this out. the surge for a miss -- the search for a missing airplane brings up another discovery instead. look at this ship off of the coast of australia. incredible scenes coming out of there. searchers used a high resolution sonar. they believe it's made of iron and it went down 200 years ago. the discovery was made looking for malaysia flight 370 which disappeared as you know back in march of 2014. it is actually the second ship wreck found, a wooden sailing ship from the 19th century was discovered last may. cool stuff. a tampa bay company is hosting a job fair tonight and tomorrow. you have time. to find good workers, they are offering more money.
4:22 pm
4:23 pm
>> you see some of the video action air 1 shot a short time ago. all of this happening at us-301 and callie road. right now all southbound lanes are blocked. that's where we find marisela burgos on the scene. you just spoke with one of the children that was on the bus. >> reporter: i did. 10-year-old sean.

the bus that were crying after the impact. they're elementary students. something like that happens. he said he has never been in a crash before, especially on a bus. i'm going to move out of the way so you can see us-301. they opened one lane. you see the far left lane is now open. you still have some people that have to come off of us-301 on to callie road. they removed that school bus i would say probably 15 minutes ago. as you mentioned, there were 31 students on the bus. we do have hillsborough county school officials out here, authorities out here. we still don't know how this crash happened and what happened. but we did speak with someone earlier today, a student. and he describes what he saw. >> the kids were scared. they were crying, upset, shaken. as long as the kids are fine, that's what matters to me. kids are everything.
4:25 pm
>> reporter: and that was one of the witnesses. i apologize. he was actually at the taco stand and noticed the crash and made sure that the students were okay. again, part of us-31 is open. part is blocked off. we have to find out how the crash happened. we hope to get more information soon. marisela burgos, abc action news. >> also right now a popular beach resort is hiring for hundreds of positions. carkara, what kind of jobs are they offering. >> reporter: everything that you can think of. you can't beat working on the beach, right? they have staff members talking about job opportunities with people, doing interviews on the spot. if they think you're great, they might offer you a job on the spot too. you can't beat that. they have several different stations set up. vacation, booking, housekeeping, restaurant staff,

4:33 pm
>> right now, let's take a live look outside of a powerball line at the gas station tampa. that's not really a line. 23,000 powerball tickets being sold per minute in florida. that's the place to be because there's no line. oh, there's the line. there it is. the line is not too terrible in tampa right now. just be glad that you live in a powerball state. check this video out. the video on your right is from our station in vegas. the gambling capital of the country. but did you know it's one of
4:34 pm
participate in powerball. what are people doing? they're going to california, to the border. this has become the busiest store in california. look at people camped out this morning. people lining up down the street. they started that line around 3:00 this morning. closer to home, another state that doesn't participate, alabama. so take a look inside this store near the alabama-georgia line. they turned powerball more into a picnic, if you will, setting up tables. and a sign to keep people organized in the line. amazing no powerball line fights just yet. so where is all of that money going to if you actually think about it? nearly 18 billion went to state budgets in the 2014 fiscal year. they have been sold since the last time that anyone won the jackpot. that was back in november.
4:35 pm
billion has now gone to good causes around the country like public education, college scholarships. help for our veterans and senior citizens. >> there you go. that may sound great. just how much is going to the causes? every state has a commission that oversees how the money is spent. it varies by state. a small part goes to administrative fees for the lottery. then it goes to which ever area the state decides. it's discretionary. in florida, the other revenue goes to the education enhancement trust fund. we are showing you who that is helping. >> reporter: time is running out. >> 1.5 billion is a motivator. >> this makes $12. >> reporter: so many people are banking on winning the powerball here that they ran out of paper at one point. don't worry. if your numbers don't match up
4:36 pm
>> hopefully it goes to a good place. it's supposed to go to education. >> reporter: that's right. 40% of all powerball ticket sales in florida goes to education. that's 80 cents for every ticket sold. this round generating $98 million so far paying for new technology in school, teacher bonuses and scholarships. i guess you could call ryan heckle one of the lucky ones. a freshman at usf, he received a bright future scholarship last year, paid for by the powerball lottery. >> it has helped out a lot. it's like $77 a credit hour. >> reporter: he's not gambling on his future. he doesn't even have a ticket for tonight's jackpot. instead, he is sticking with the sure thing, studying finance. >> i feel like the best way to make money is to be dealing with money. i definitely feel that's the way to go.
4:37 pm
lottery started in 1986, $7.7 billion has gone to education with 23,000 tickets sold every minute, that number will only grow from here. it's about 7 hours until we find out if someone wins the jackpot. unless of course no one wins again. for the now, i'm christie post. >> while we're waiting for a winner in our rollover powerball, in the u.k. the largest lotto jackpot was won. it's the equivalent to $96 million. but they had to share it because a second ticket matched all of the numbers. >> good luck. good luck. >> i'm going -- >> she says what have we done?
4:38 pm
do the quick math there. each winning ticket got $48 million. the first purchase will be a first class ticket for their daughter to come home from australia. when i win i'm going to get my lambo off of lay away. >> i'm stressing about it. >> don't stress. >> this is what happens, ladies and gentlemen. you don't want this. this is what happens when a water main breaks. >> but it's freezing. >> yeah. >> and temperatures are in the teens. you get this freezing -- look at the power lines completely philly. >> yikes. >> water does freeze. we talk about temperatures that cold. and, hey, how about an update on the ice car. we showed spectacular images. this is the car that gotten cased in ice. it belongs to that man in his early 20s in new york who left

4:40 pm
cold in a very short amount of time. what happens is that water begins to freeze. as the water freezes, it expands and you get little mini quakes underground. they're called cryo sizeisms. we're not sure if that's what happens but that's what we're going with right now. it may have been sonic booms from planes. let's show you what is happening across the area with clouds out there. well, we are getting ready for our next shot of some rainfall here. and with an el nino pattern it comes once again in the form of some severe thunderstorms possible as we head through the day on friday. we could be having a line of nasty storms moving in from the eastern gulf. that is beginning to take shape. you can see that on the satellite perspective. you see the rainfall. it will organize. it's that little rain that will develop into a potent low that
