. good afternoon, everybody. well, we're still socked in with cloud cover. no changes there. more clouds than sun, and those clouds will eventually give way to some pretty nasty storms, somewhere along the west coast of florida. as we've been saying, the timing is not changing. tomorrow morning, a line comes in and goes through and quickly clears out. in terms of the severe threat, that's something we're still keeping our eyes on. it's certainly a possibility, but now extending it from saturday into sunday, we could be looking at it twice in the next three days. a closer look at that and let you know when the next cold wave comes in, in a couple of minutes. >> thank you, dan. well, tonight, two bay area residents will soon be millionaires. state lottery officials saying a publix in seminole and a radiant food store in zephyrhills each sold powerball tickets that matched the first five numbers. that means those tickets are worth $1 million. meanwhile, residents on the east coast are curious, was it

abc action news reporter adam weiner joined a group of teachers from polk county for the trip. we'll get to that story in a moment. first, i'm getting word that we're going to go live to polk county, now where sheriff grady jud is about to address the media on a triple murder from last week in lakeland. let's listen in. -- executed. they were shot in the head at close range. the fourth person was shot in the head, more specifically, the face and left for dead. only he didn't die. it was, i believe at that time and our preliminary information substantiates they were here to collect a drug debt, that this was an organized hit, that they didn't intend to leave anyone in the house alive. here's what we know. at about 6:44 a.m.
5:07 pm
on the 6th, these suspects, two of which we're about to talk of, two of at least four were at the residence or orchestrated the event. they went in, there was conversation, went from conversation to one of our victims saying "but i paid uncle, i paid him" to he heard a beating, a fight, then gunshots. now, you would think at the end of the gunshots that the people would run out and take off. not these folks. they were obviously experienced. they spent another 10 or 15 minutes in the house rummaging around after they shot and killed, absolutely slaughtered and executed our three victims. our detectives immediately went to work. we found initially from a
5:08 pm
business in the close vicinity a video clip of a van leaving. it looked like a work van. the detectives worked with that information. they found out that in fact it was a u-haul rental unit. this u-haul rental unit came from miami, florida at 5341 northwest 7th street. the vehicle was located by the miami-dade police department for us and i can't say enough good things about the miami- dade police department, the miami police department, and the florida highway patrol. they worked tirelessly with us during these last days. once we had the vehicle, we began to work on, well, who rented the vehicle? and we determined the apparent
5:09 pm
mastermind, at least at this point, was andrew joseph. on the 10th of january, we were able to put enough information together to get warrants for his arrest and search warrant for his residence. we arrested him at home the following day on the 11th of january and we executed a search warrant there. and lo and behold, among a lot of evidence we seized from his house was a traffic citation made out to jonathan el sigeri, blackmail, 26 years of age. our investigators along with the detectives from the miami police department -- miami-dade police department worked in gathering more evidence, tied him to the crime. we are confident that he is one
5:10 pm
of the three people that actually entered the residence when the murders took place. subsequent to putting that information together, we were able to obtain three counts of murder, home invasion robbery for him as well. wouldn't you know it, when we got to his residence at 220 northeast 44th street in miami, he was in a chair having his dread locks cut off. for some reason, he decided all of a sudden he needed a hair cut. jonathan and andrew are half brothers. they are both arrested and charged with three counts of first degree murder. we know now that we're looking for at least two additional suspects. we believe those two additional
5:11 pm
we have every reason to believe they are known associates and are from the miami area. we know that one of the two is about 6 feet tall. he has long dreads, or at least he did unless he's had a hair cut as well. the other one's about 5' 8 to 5' 10, a more heavy build. we believe they are haitian, according to the information we've been provided. there's a $10,000 cash reward just for information leading to their arrest. i point that out because people who may want to cooperate from the miami area may go, hey, these are bad dudes and you would be right. they are. >> you've been listening to polk county sheriff grady judd in regards to a triple homicide.
5:12 pm

5:15 pm
happens day in and day out. >> reporter: so what does the future look like? unless changes happen, the president of polk county teachers union says she is pessimistic. >> we need reform on the reform. we have been tested to death. we have seen work load jump that does not make any difference for student learning. it's just putting crap on pieces of paper. >> reporter: representatives here in tallahassee passed the law last year reducing the amount of standardized testing in florida, but a lot of the teachers here today say it didn't go nearly far enough because teacher pay is still tied to student performance. lawmakers say that method, as well as standardized testing, though, is essential to tracking student learning and holding teachers accountable. here in tallahassee, adam weiner, abc action news. covering highlands county now, an employee for the sebring police department is out of a job, tonight under investigation for stealing from the city. you'll never guess how it all unraveled. abc action news takes us down

the twisted paper trail. >> reporter: for 13 years, vicki hicks worked as the executive assistant for the sebring police chief, but tonight, this secretary who had a lot of access, faces plenty of questions. >> something isn't right here. >> reporter: sheriff susan benton says her agency started to investigate hicks last month. dcf passed along a tip that she was stealing from her elderly father. the chief secretary pocketed more than $100,000 of her dad's money. >> she did have legal access to the account, but the father indicates that he had never given her permission to take that money. >> reporter: it was during this tedious task of sifting through bank statements when detectives discovered something even stranger. they found stacks of checks made out to the city of sebring had been deposited in the victim's account, as secretary hicks often accepted checks made out to the city or police department. >> clearly to us there was ample evidence that something wasn't right and that
5:17 pm
a significant theft of city funds. >> reporter: sheriff benton says it's in the thousands of dollars, but her team is still working to get to the bottom of it. hicks only faces charges for the alleged theft from her dad so far. she lost her job because she would not cooperate with the city's internal investigation. >> and we all want to get to the bottom of how the systems in place failed to allow something like this that's alleged to have occurred. >> reporter: the city has since hired a forensic accountant to help sort this mess out and help find some missing money. in sebring, abc action news. . everybody? for the last several days, we've been talking about the possibility of some pretty rough storms on friday. they are still coming in. now, it looks like we'll have sunday as well. saturday is absolutely the day something done outdoors,
5:18 pm
tricky both tomorrow and on sunday. now, this is a look at the radar. you can clearly see the rains the east. now, we're going to have two areas we're watching. first of all, the rain down south is going to be lifting north overnight. and then we'll be tracking what could be a pretty significant line of storms tomorrow morning. there's an outside chance we could see a few severe storms. i don't think we're going to be put in a tornado watch, although it is a slight possibility. we'll get into that in just a second. temperatures right now, here's the first thing you need. warmer air to provide enough power, lift and stability energy for those storms to develop. we're getting that. when that warm front lifts north later tonight, we'll be even warmer. temperatures could actually rise for a period of time overnight before the rains arrive tomorrow morning. there will be rain. there will be storms as well. right now, tampa, 68 degrees
5:19 pm
clearwater and st. pete, sunny skies and 66. so there is the satellite picture. lot of clouds rolling in from the gulf. lot of moisture out there, so we've got everything you need atmospherically for a front to develop. the lift moving from south to north tonight. then there comes the low pressure. now, the key so where the severe weather will be is where that low really sets up. last weekend, the line went to our south, around naples. tomorrow morning into the afternoon, latest run bringing it closer to our area. now, i do think once the storms approach land, they will weaken a bit because the water is cooled off significantly, but we cannot rule out the chance of an isolated strong storm, maybe severe storm maybe tomorrow morning, through lunchtime. then by 2:00, it's gone. then we clear out, as i said, by saturday, leading to a pretty nice day on saturday, with more sunshine until
