day. bit. also today on the new tampa bay, a whiled weather event. a roof crashing on top of tornado watches, heavy rains. sunshine outside? with the wet weather returning this weekend, we're talking about it with denis phillips. >> so if you want to see evil in the flesh, there he is. >> and finally, an answer. why the cops say a well- respected softball coach in polk county was murdered in his own driveway. >> it's one of the happiest days of my life. but also one of the most humbling. >> plus, the new coach all choked up today. let's just hope we aren't crying the next football season. what the man in charge of the bucs says the first order of business will be. it's 4:00.
4:02 pm
that means the new tampa bay is on. we start today with what a difference a few hours makes. this was a look earlier this morning. completely wet outside of our studios. we're across the street from raymond james stadium. nightmare traffic this morning. also more of the same in st. petersburg. sideways rain, if you want to call it that. check out this poor person in this backyard with the umbrella trying to get out of his backyard. you saw him scurrying through the shot. it wasn't helping much. thanks to our viewers in the northern county for keeping us updated during the downpours. janet showing us this picture earlier today at her house. but the real weather story here happening today down in venice. you see aerial pictures right there. a roof getting peeled off of a strip mall. it landed on a bunch of cars behind the plaza. no one was hurt.
4:03 pm
the good news, there was no tornado. and i'll let denis phillips tell us the rest of that. how do we know it wasn't a tornado. >> you look at radar imagery. tornado has a specific signature. you can see what it looks like. there was a tornado south of them for the second time in a week. two times in a week. i don't -- >> in january. >> and just in florida. the exact same spot or within a couple of miles. tornado touched down. no reports of injuries but plenty of damage. there it was at the line came through. up around venice way. look at all of the spin there. things were really cranking for a period of time. that's as they moved in. >> look at it right now. >> yes. skies have cleared. it is beautiful out there right now with sunny skies and mild temperatures. and those mild temperatures are going to stick around for one more day. and then we've got another

i don't know how dirk is going to be. i can bring up reasons why i think dirk cuter will be successful. what i like about him, he is a straight shooter. i don't think dirk would be a great politician or me. we say what we mean. you know what we are saying. you may not like it. he is a communicator. he is a motivator. he holds everybody accountable. he said he's a pure football coach. in the rudimentary sense. he will strengthen the team by surrounding himself i believe with successful people. in his first hire announced today being from the atlanta area. >> i know. >> falcons head coach mike smith is his new defensive coordinator. >> sure, there is a comfort factor there because there's no better teacher than your own observation. i have seen mike smith as both
4:06 pm
a coordinator and as a head coach. and i truly trust my gut when it comes to coaches. i've been around coaches my whole life. this guy is the real deal and we're lucky to get him in tampa. >> mike is a good choice, i think. he is a comfortable choice. that's important because i think the more comfortable dirk is in his situation, the quicker he will be able to grow into this job. it will take time. not only for him and his family. we will have more coming up at 5:00. >> hopefully it means wins. >> w is all that matters. we are hearing from tampa bay mayor buckhorn as the team can search outside of the city for the new stadium. the tampa park apartments which is section 8 housing between downtown and ebor. >> if you can use the downtown
