i can't believe, it was our home. >> death and destruction, this morning abc action news crews right in the middle of all of this damage to show you firsthand after a weekend of tornadoes and storms across the state. >> i think secretary clinton knows what she says is very disingenuous. >> calling out the other candidate. the gloves come off in the latest democratic debate. now we find out who is leading in the polls after sunday night showdown. thank you for joining us on abc action news. many of you have the day off today for the martin luther king jr. holiday. busy morning too in the abc action news newsroom. we continue to track the mess from the weekend storms. some people still this morning are without power. want to check with ivan cabrera first with a check of weather and traffic together. the threat is not even over yet. >> we're talking at least now the clean-up will continue with dry conditions here, we're going to have clear skies and

temperatures over the next few days, that we can handle certainly this time of year. temperatures now in the mid and upper 40s. we do have another storm system on the way for later in the week, we'll be detailing that and fine-tuning the forecast for you, we have plenty of time to watch that, until then i think we're in pretty good shape. temperatures, you have to factor in the wind, it's still gusty, 20 to 25 mile-per-hour winds. factor that in with temperatures in the 40s, you get wind chills in the 30s. zephyrhills now at 39, brooksville 39. inverness at 39. and lower 40s along the beaches. as we head through the remainder of the day and morning commute, will be fine. evening commute likewise but i think not too many cars out there this morning. we are expecting some light traffic, a lot of people off of work. look behind me here and look at the live picture, i-275 and

right now on 275 through downtown tampa. just five minutes from downtown to the howard frankland bridge. once you get to the bridge this is what it looks like at cypress just as you get off the bridge in tampa, six minutes across in both directions so no crashes or breakdowns to tell but here. average speeds on the interstates now -- as you might expect, all in the green, i-4 and i-75 into the downtown tampa area, and i-275 over in pinellas county. 67 miles per hour your average speed. from the sunshine skyway down to the howard frankland bridge. quick check of drive times. on the veterans, all in the green. at the bottom it's just 6 minutes to get from waters to 275. if anything happens on the roads to slow you down we'll let you know about it here and of course on twitter. several communities cleaning up after an ef-2 tornado early yesterday morning.

news as soon as the storm hit the tiny community of duette in manatee county. husband and wife, steven and kelly wilson were in their son and four grandchildren when the tornado touched down. steve wilson pinned under the debris and died. the wife ok initially, died in heart attack. >> the adult son and kids were hurt but are expected to recover. neighbors are really pulling together to help clean up. >> i hope our community comes together for a family that not a lot of people knew but those that did knew, really knew their hearts and their love for people, and their generosity. >> the red cross is in duette to help, gofundme pages have also been set up to help the family with clean-up and funeral costs. we posted links to those gofundme accounts, the funds keep growing too.

find them on abcactionnews.com. you saw breaking news coverage begin yesterday in sarasota county as governor rick scott weighed whether or not to declare a disaster area. >> action air 1 caught a bird's eye view of the damage. this is siesta key where residents, vacationers now in clean-up mode after at least one tornado ripped through the area. we spoke to several people there when it began 3:30 a.m. >> i woke up and heard this loud, loud noise, like i had never heard before. >> it was about 10, 15 seconds of just unbelievely loud noise. you could hear stuff breaking and crashing. >> we're finding things that came from across the street here. >> trouble this morning, people in the area are trying to find a place to go as the debris is sorted through and the recovery begins. early estimates show it can cost more than $3 million to rebuild. good news is there is a resource center, it's opening up today for the people affected by the storm in sarasota county.

edison keith mansion in sarasota between 11:00 and 2:00 today. >> you'll find county leaders, american red cross, florida sheriff's office. all the information is posted. a lot of you can look at it at abcactionnews.com. at the worst point about 200,000 homes were without power across the state. according to florida power and light. we're staying in touch with fpl and they help to get power restored to everyone. the president and ceo of fpl was also touring the worst hit areas of sarasota county. he hoped to have 99% of power restored by last night. right now there are still 1,000 outages in sarasota county but only 120 in manatee. in the final debate before the iowa caucuses, true fight between democratic candidates hillary clinton and bernie sanders began. >> the two battled over who is tougher on gun control. clinton slammed sanders for

were on their way to baghdad international airport. security deteriorated recently there. three americans released by iran that prisoner swap now in germany, they are being medically evaluated. this is video of the plane that landed in geneva, switzerland overnight. another detainee chose to stay in iran, a fifth is already home with family in massachusetts. two of those freed are "washington post" reporter jays and a former u.s. marine. in exchange for the americans' freedom the u.s. pardoned drug charges against seven imprisoned in the u.s. still ahead -- on a day when the st. pete community celebrates the legacy and dream of martin luther king jr., a divide in the city. >> the lgbt community is angry that the person chosing an

reporter adam winer is live at the coliseum where the breakfast will be held. >> the mayor even weighed in on the growing controversy. >> reporter: that's right. the mayor says he's not going to be giving honorary keys to the city, to the speaker which is sometimes custom here at the prayer breakfast in st. pete every year. the person at the center of this controversy is a man, reverend jamal bryant, of the empowerment temple ame church. he's a powerful voice in the community and is going to bring that voice to the breakfast in st. pete. speaking to a sold-out 1,200- person crowd. but many in the lgbt community locally say they wish a different speaker had been chosen because reverend bryant has made several anti-gay comments on line, can be seen in several videos on-line. that is a reason that they asked the organizers here to pick a different speaker.

that is going to be happening. they are sticking with the speaker. they also say they believe that reverend bryant deserves the honorary keys to the city. while the mayor makes that choice he said he's attending the breakfast as he always does but bryant will not be getting the keys and the spokesperson for the mayor's office says they wish the event organizers had picked somebody who could do a better job of bringing the st. pete community together as opposed to dividing them. we're going to be hearing more from organizers later this morning but for now live in st. pete, adam winer, abc action news. our community will celebrate martin luther king jr.'s lasting impact on history in tampa today. the early parade route is floats and performance groups will begin to march down 15th street at noon. get the very best view. in st. pete the parade avenue south and mlk street.

we've been dealing with crazy weather lately, a lot of it devastating but not just in florida. >> a person is dead after a

michigan highway. three people are in critical condition. this is all because of this -- whiteout snow conditions causing a chain reaction of crashes. police say as many as 50 vehicles, nearly a dozen semis were involved in the big pile- up that shut down parts of the highway. >> out of nowhere i was hit by a semi truck which caused me to kind of spin out, land in a ditch. my husband, i guess he caught the semi truck's -- tail end caught my husband. it was crazy. >> drivers say cars were mangled, other vehicles were crushed between jackknifed semi trailers yesterday. the trouble all started when the heavy snow kicked in, as cars were still going at high speeds, with reduced visibility. we're still trying to wrap our minds around the terrible weather we had here over the weekend. it's incredible. what you normally don't see here, it's been a very long time since we had such powerful tornadoes. we're going to explain exactly

talking about additional severe weather this week. we see this el nino pattern. we've talked about this. this is basically warmer than normal temperatures across the equatorial pacific. it wreaks havoc not just the united states but planetwide. it changes storm tracks and the jet stream. we have two storm tracks, one to the north and this is one normally not here, this is what we need for severe weather across florida during the winter. this is what is ongoing here. in fact, zooming in closer and showing you what happens here. the upper levels. typically thunderstorms here just kind ofvertly and die out -- vertically and die out in a few minutes. to survive much longer. then you have spin. you have winds at the surface southeast. the important thing here is

direction up above. so as those thunderstorms grow, tilt, they are spinning and that is how we get our tornadoes and usually this setup happens at night here in florida, unfortunately when people are sleeping, that's exactly what happened with the ef2 that ran through duette. i want to go back in time. it's fascinating stuff on titan doppler radar. again it's something you just don't see. signatures off-shore already at 2:45 a.m., this actually intensified as it came in through sarasota and then we tracked it as it moved further north and east across manatee into duette, and the national weather service surveying this as an ef-2. by the way this is a three-hour loop. the storm was gone in just three hours. not just that particular storm that spawned the tornado but just the rain in general as we were covering this through the overnight hours, if you were awake with us, we were here all night. ef-2, 127 mile-per-hour winds and it was on the ground for a

obviously resulted in the two deaths and the four injuries. when we come back, we'll talk with the forecast, extended forecast in fact. by the time we get to friday we could be dealing with another threat for severe weather. for now let's go to janelle and check the roads. >> right now you shouldn't have any trouble. it's a holiday, traffic pretty light. hardly any cars at i-75 and the selmon expressway. if you're heading out the door in the area in the southern apex way down there at 275, it's just 29 minutes to get to i-4 so good drive there through that area. buckle up, we're going to take a virtual drive up i-4 to downtown tampa. passing through ybor city, all the traffic indicators in the green. as you head into the junction traffic indicators also in the green, there's a live picture bhaf it looks like, again, traffic very light, no crashes

let's check drive times on 275, southbound towards i-4, from the apex to i-4 it's 13 minutes. 4 minutes from busch to i-4 and just 6 minutes from i-4 to the howard frankland bridge. for more updates throughout the morning, on your morning commute keep it here and follow me on twitter @tampabaytraffic. 5:19. the search is expected to resume nor a toddler who disappeared in west tennessee last thursday. this 2-year-old, his name is noah, he was walking in the woods with his grandmother and older sister when he got lost. the grandmother said she lost sight of him. the temperature in the area was supposed to drop to 14 degrees overnight. authorities and hundreds of volunteers have been looking for noah since thursday night. >> you can't give up on him. there's a 2-year-old out there and it's cold. we got to get this baby home. >> police say the searchers, volunteers still haven't found clothing, footprints or blood

a new study finds medical marijuana is an effective treatment for migraines. researchers at the university of colorado studied 121 people diagnosed with migraines. they treated them with medical marijuana over a four-year span. at the end of the study the majority of the patients reported an overall decrease in migraines but researchers say more studies like this are needed to determine exactly how marijuana reduces migraines. they also caution every drug has side effect.

we're learning when the new shows will premiere on netflix this year. "unbreakable" returns for its second season april 15th. "orange is the new black" returns for its fourth season june 17th. and also, a new trailer has been released for the upcoming fourth season of "house of cards." netflix says it will deliver more than 600 hours of original content by the end of the year. can't wait. coming up -- fierce debate as democratic candidates try to sway support their way ahead of the iowa caucuses. were their arguments true or were they just blowing smoke? fact-checking and finding out. >> and people in many towns across the state are waking up to scenes like this. destruction from tornadoes and strong storms. we're going to run down the help that is available today
