be dressing appropriately for temperatures in the upper 30s in citrus county now, beverly hills 37. floral city at 40. most of hillsborough county is in the mid-40s right now. see how the temperatures are still falling in areas? they will continue to fall for at least another hour, hour and- a-half and then we'll start to see them coming back up. but we're going to be topping back out today in the upper 50s. much below average temperatures, lots of sunshine. just doesn't warm us up very well today. the extra cloud cover we've had this morning and overnight last night has kept our temperatures mild in comparison to what you're going to see overnight tonight and into early tomorrow morning. more on that coming up. as far as hitting the roads, no weather related problems but of course doesn't take weather to cause a problem for your morning commute. so janelle, what is going on now? i think most people heading out now won't have any trouble

unfortunately, we have a fatal crash in gulfport. corey dierdorff is on his way there, on 22nd avenue south trying to get there to bring us the latest information. all we know, one person was killed in what we believe is a single-car crash so we don't know if someone was killed that was in the car or possibly a pedestrian. he's heading that way and he will find out all the details. i want to show you what we're talking about, on the map, in gulfport, 49th street at tangerine avenue south. i am seeing some slowdowns on 49th. you might want to consider taking 53rd street south just to avoid this area. obviously since it is a fatal accident there is a lot of activity out there. so just avoid that intersection if you can. you have a lot of options of surrounding streets to avoid that intersection. we'll keep you posted of course. the only incident i found on the interstates.

area on i-4, in the eastbound lanes not causing any delays but if you happen to be driving and move over. the veterans, you're looking great, all in the green, 17 prince from -- minutes from 54 to 275. 6:02. breaking overnight in tampa, fire crews trying to figure out what sparked this fire at a daily street house. we're -- bailey street house. we're told firefighters got the call 2:30 this morning. crews say it's the second or third time they have responded to a fire here. so far they have not ruled out arson as a cause. don't be alarmed if you see this when you try to log on to twitter this morning. a major outage impacting millions of users hit the overnight. users across the globe reported problems logging on. others still having difficulty. we'll stay on top of it.

the communities hit hardest. >> we learned in sarasota dozens have damage totaling around $12 million. people who live along baywind in sarasota say they have a lot of work ahead of them but they are just grateful for the support of friends and even strippingers who came to -- strangers who came to help. kathy and sid fleming are still waiting to see how much it will cost to repair their damage. >> they said don't do anything until you talk to us. they've been right on it. they would have been here today except it was a holiday. >> the flemings' insurance company will survey their property later today. still awaiting funeral arrangements for a couple who died when a tornado tore apart their home in duette. steven kelly was crushed in the debris. his wife had a heart attack on the way to the hospital. four grandchildren in the home took shelter and survived.

says she survived two hours pinned under debris in a sarasota county home. she said she tried to hide when she heard the sound of rattling windows but before she could do anything the walls and ceiling came crashing in on her. >> i thought everything was me. and water was running, the people broke and there was water all around me, and i thought i'm either going to drown or i'm going to die. >> nancy said she spent 30 minutes screaming for help before her neighbor finally found her. it then took firefighters another 90 minutes to free her. nancy says she now has stitches, bruises, shards of glass in her leg but she's just thankful to be alive. we're taking action with resources to help storm victims rebuild. sarasota county leaders say before starting anything call your insurance company and take pictures of the damage. then call the county's permitting department to see what permits are needed before

pasco deputies want to assure students and families pineview middle school is safe there after a bomb threat was posted on social media. we're not naming the 14-year- old arrested for this because of his age but deputies say the eighth grader posted on instagram there would be a bell. threat is fake and he thought it would be funny. he spent his life fighting crime on the streets of tampa. know retired detective in a fight for his life and needs your help too. jose feliciano wagon diagnosed with gas trig cancer last october. his health deteriorated quickly. he was enjoying retirement in puerto rico at the time but now he's so sick he needs a $30,000 air ambulance to fly him back to tampa. once he's here he will receive treatment at the moffett cancer center. >> he needs our help. he's in dire need, it's life or death at this point.

6:10. the kidnapping of three americans in iraq is raising some serious questions about how safe americans are abroad. iraqi forces right now are going door-to-door in a baghdad neighborhood called dora, there's a look at it there. it's -- they are searching for the men, trios -- the interpreter apparently invited them to his home but sources close to the investigation say the kidnapping actually happened at an apartment known to be a brothel. the missing man worked for a security service company. steps are taken today for the city of flint, michigan to

a federal disaster declaration could help more people impacted in the crisis. remember lead started to leach after the city switched to river water to cut down on cost. president obama declared a state of emergency in flint over the weekend but that caps the aid at $5 million, the city fears it won't be enough money. loved ones are holding on to hope that 12 marines will be found nearly a week after two helicopters crashed near hawaii. the latest sign of hope, search teams found life rafts carried on board those choppers, some even inflated. the coast guard still searching from the air for any signs of life. now a u.s. navy ship is supporting underwater search efforts. officials say five days after the planes collided it's still possible there are survivors. 6:11. we want to check with meteorologist shay ryan and florida's most accurate 7-day forecast. cold day, shay. >> it is a chilly start to the day. most of our temperatures are in the 40s. we even have upper 30s in

take a look at this. kind of looks like a frozen christmas tree almost. they are power lines frozen over caused by a broken hydrant in st. louis. the car crashed into the water sending the freezing water high in the air and the ice formed before crews got a chance to turn the water off. no word yet on the driver's condition. we're not likely to see that but we're likely to see temperatures that are near freezing overnight tonight. this morning you're stepping out the door on bayshore to some chilly temperatures in the 40s. so definitely colder start to

year. the temperatures are going to be below average both from brandon 45. st. pete at 50. temperatures in the mid-50s to the north and brooksville. low 40s, 41 degrees. we have upper 30s in citrus county. so we're off to this chilly start but check out the gray and white tones across the map. that is cloud cover that we've had overnight. the cloud cover acts like a blanket, keeps us a little cozzier than what we would be otherwise. overnight tonight we lose the cloth and temperatures are even -- lose the clouds and temperatures are even lower. we still have a cool afternoon ahead, high pressure in control, no storms to worry about today but the temperatures starting off below average, ending below 70 degrees. in fact it will take until thursday before we hit the 70- degree mark. tomorrow morning upper 30s for tampa.

it happened at 49th street south and tangerine avenue south. i want to show you the location on the map. i am seeing a little bit of a slowdown on 49th street. you may want to avoid that area. tangerine is completely blocked, 49th street is open. tangerine avenue is a pretty residential street so you can easily get by on one of the side streets around it. but for the next several hours you might want to avoid that intersection because investigators do tend to be on the scene for quite some time, any time we have a fatal crash. we have a crash to tell you roadblock. kings avenue. we have a road block in the westbound lanes, the center lane is blocked here, traffic indicators though still in the green, so no need for a detour i'll keep an eye on it and let you know if you do need one. for more on both crashes check me out on twitter @tampabaytraffic. there's a singing survivor

a deadly crash in gulfport. this is at tangerine avenue south at 49th street. janelle joins us to tell us with a is going on. >> yes, one person was killed in this car, that happened overnight. you can see the car flipped on its side. that car went through the park and took out a couple of trees in the process. corey is panning over so you can see some of the damage. looks like a wheel. this obviously a pretty significant accident. we know one person was killed. no word yet on if anyone else was in that car or if there were any other injuries. corey is on the scene trying to gather the latest information. as soon as he gets any new information we'll bring that to you. i want to show you this location on a map. here it is here, 49th street south at tangerine avenue south, tangerine is a pretty residential street so you can get around that just going up a block or two. but 49th street now starting to

see kennedy boulevard. pinellas county, no delays whatsoever. howard frankland, courtney campbell to the north and then the gandy bridge, they are all checking clear all the way here, increasing volume though so do be careful. other than that, very pretty morning. shay has the forecast. voice again. all right, the rivergate tower and dry so you don't have to the way. for the morning drive. but, you do want to be aware of just how chilly it is, especially to the north. citrus county in the mid-30s to upper 30s. floral city 38. homosassa 36. most of the area is in the 40s this morning. and most of hillsborough county in the low to mid-40s. a little bit warmer as you get closer to the beaches but 46 degrees now in tampa. so through the day we are going to see a lot of sunshine, a few fair weather clouds early but lots of sunshine later, we only top out though at 58 degrees. i know you're probably asking

the bottom line, we've got even colder temperatures tomorrow morning for me to tell but before we get to the warm-up. that is coming up in the 7-day forecast. back to you. 6:33. breaking overnight stsh as you check your social media feeds you may see this message when you try and access twitter. a major outage keeping users around the world from getting on to the social media site. some users are now able to log on, others though still having difficulty. also new efforts are getting underway today to hold florida police officers accountable for using deadly force. just about five hours a state senator from orlando will lay out details of a new bill able to require police departments the florida department of law enforcement know about any use of force that ends with someone dying or getting badly hurt. within 24 hours of the incident. that bill was filed a week ago and is up for debate in the current legislative session. 6:33. have thought about but do you know what your congress member does every day?

david jolley they make fundraising phone calls and spend four hours a day doing just that. he was looking to replace senator marco rubio and says "we have a part time congress in a full time world." he says she's sworn off fundraising in his campaign and today plans to introduce a bill that would ban congress from raising money while it's in session. 6:34. happening, a big education rally in the florida state capitol. in the last hour supporters of a tax credit scholarship program left the bay area headed for tallahassee to the rally. abc action news reporter adam winer is live at the tampa bay christian academy on rome avenue where the buses just departed. what kind of crowd is on the bus right now? >> reporter: a lot of the kids on that bus, a lot of the kids that go to this private school would not be able to afford to go to a private school like this if not for this voucher program that group is fighting for. that group that left a little while ago was about 100

gathered here today and they are expected to join that large rally in tallahassee, up to 10,000 people expected. marching to show their support for the program. about an hour ago as i mentioned they left the tampa bay christian academy on the bus for tallahassee. that state scholarship program gives money to low income families to help send their kids to private schools like the tampa bay christian academy. nearly 80,000 florida kids are going to be using that scholarship in 2016, but there's a lawsuit by the the program. i was talking to some parents at the school today. they said that they would be extremely disappointed if their kids had believed this school, if that 15-year-old -- had to leave this school if that 15- end. >> i love public school but it was just not fit for my children. they needed someththing smaller and closer, it's a christian beliefs. >> reporter: florida's education association which is

says they have nothing against private schools but think this program specifically is taking too much and reducing the quality of public schools here in florida. live in tampa, adam winer, abc action news. 6:36. the welcome relief at the pump this morning continues. overnight we found gas for $1.75 gallon on west hillsborough avenue in tamp. a a little below the bay area and national average but nowhere near what some drivers were paying for a few hours in michigan. two stations got into a price war that saw them drop the price of gas to 47 cents a gallon at one station. and 54 cents a gallon across the street. prices are back to normal there today. it's easy to find the cheapest gas near you. go to our home page at abcactionnews.com. click on the traffic icon. then click on gas prices. you'll see a list of the cheapest gas prices in the area. big winners, folks living in plant city, can't see it here

a a tennessee elementary school tutor accused with driving three children in the trunk of her car says investigators got the story wrong. >> investigators say all the children found in the trunk are her students. a customer at a gas station called police after spotting andrea james opening the trunk to let the kids out. police say surveillance video backs up the 911 caller's story. the children range in age from

good morning. fatal accident in the gulfport area around tangerine drive, single car vehicle rolled up on the lefthand side. st. pete police are on scene now investigating. so the entire roadway, tangerine drive is closed, not creating a traffic problem per se but certainly a visual delay, if you come down 49th street you'll see the activity. here's janelle with more on this. we have our own corey dierdorff out there on the scene. the car just flipped on its side. corey says there are a couple of trees down and looks like that car may have taken out the side. as we've been saying we know crash. no word on who that was or if there was anyone else in the car, we're still trying to work

of the crash in gulfport on the map. 49th street at tangerine avenue south. tangerine a pretty residential street so you can just go up a block or two to get around that. 49th street, we're starting to see slowdowns, you may want to avoid that. you can use 58th street or even 53rd street, either one will take you around that accident. a couple other crashes, one in temple terrace, this crash eastbound temple terrace highway at u.s. 301, we were seeing delays there, looks like that one may be in the clearing stages. and a crash in brandon, east brandon boulevard at north kings avenue, some road block in the westbound lanes, that one seems to be clearing as well but you might want to leave yourself a few extra minutes if your drive takes you through that intersection. taking a look outside the interstates looking great. i-275 and bearss, traffic flowing nicely. fhp was reporting a crash, though i've checked several cameras in the area and haven't seen a thing. so you're good to go there.

was still cold. >> it's chilly to say the least this morning. take a look at bayshore and you can see if you're going for a jog around tampa bay this morning it is going to be a chilly start. we do have mixed skies, a little bit of cloud cover and that has helped to keep our temperatures a bit more mild than what they would be otherwise believe it or not. take a look, the temperatures now mainly in the 40s, 39 in inverness. most of citrus county is in the 30s. the rest of the area in the mid- 40s. we're going to top out today at 58 degrees, but with clear skies overnight tonight temperatures tomorrow morning are going to be about 5 to 10 degrees lower so that means there are freeze concerns from inland, pasco county on north through hernando and citrus. we have a freeze warning as temperatures are likely to fall to the upper 20s for a couple hours, bring in the plants and pets. definitely going to be bundling up tomorrow morning. but the afternoon will be a tad warmer with a high around 63

we make it to average on thursday and on friday, but our next cold front rolls through on friday and with it we're going to see a round of heavy rain, some thunderstorms in the mix. we're continuing now to watch and monitor the models for potential for stronger, even severe storms so we'll get the timing and intensity tine find as we get closer. but looks like now it will be late morning and early afternoon when we start to see a chance of rain. we cool down again as we head into the weekend behind that front. that is florida's most accurate 7-day forecast. time now 6:48. for the first time this morning we're hearing the 911 call of a warning that couldn't save the life of an ohio police officer. we first brought you this story as breaking news. authorities say herschel jones could be charged soon for the murder of officer thomas cottrell. a woman called 911 trying to warn authorities in danville,

>> yes, i'm in danger. cops in danville are in danger too. my ex-boyfriend is out in camo >> that call came just minutes killed. his body was found moments later behind a city building. jones is being held in custody terms. to hold him until charges are filed in the case. new this morning, a canadian woman is upset over apple's policy that required a court order to get her late husband's password. peggy bush lost her husband to lung cancer in august, she soon realized she didn't know the passwords to his i-pad. peggy gave apple her husband's will, a death certificate and serial number for the i-pad but sapple still insisted she -- apple still insitted she needed a court order that could cost thousands of dollars. >> i could get pensions, i

all kinds of things but from apple i couldn't get a silly password? it seemed nonsense. >> after a canadian news station got involved apple called peggy offering her help without the court order. a state attorney who specializes in digital assets says to avoid this kind of problem wills should include where to find passwords but not the passwords themselves. starting today -- you can begin the process of getting your money back from the federal government without interest i might add. the irs is opening up e filing today allowing you to submit your 2015 tax return. irs says you need a couple of things first, make sure you have all your year-end from your employer, 1099s from banks and form 1095a from the marketplace if you're claiming a health care tax credit. you get a few extra days this year because of emancipation day in dc. the deadline this year to file is moved to monday april 18th. now some people of course want to scam you from your tax

you can watch the oscars here on your abc action news station on february 28th. we'll be here the next morning, we'll break down the winners and the biggest moments. traffic is back to normal this morning in the san san francisco bay area. yesterday, different story as more than 1,000 protesters blocked the bay bridge. some of the protesters chained cars together in a row to stop traffic. the demonstration, an offshoot of the black lives matter protest was to demand justice over last month's police shooting death of a 26-year-old african-american man. police arrested more than two dozen protesters charging them with public nuisance and illegal assembly. ted cruz and donald trump, their words continuing to escalate. on george stephanopoulos's show

didn't take long for ted cruz to respond to the comment. he's questioning trump's conservative credentials. >> ronald reagan was a voice of consistency. i'm pretty sure that ronald reagan didn't write checks and support democratic politicians. >> trump is trying to woo evangelicals who support cruz. however, he stumbled a little on the democratic side iowa today. holding four events in the hawkeye state where he's expected to continue to attack hillary clinton on what he calls her cozy relationship with wall street bankers. right now polls find sanders and clinton in a near dead heat in iowa with less than two months to go before the -- weeks to go before the caucuses.
