scene trying to figure out how they are going to clear this. that investigation just wrapping up and tow truck arriving on the scene in the last five to 10 minutes. if you're headed in to tampa on i-had -- i-4 the backup already started. a good five-minute to 10-minute delay on i-4 westbound. eastbound towards orlando there's a little onlooker delay but if you come through this area, please as you come over the exit right before fantasy of flight go ahead and slow down, there's a lot of vehicles, emergency vehicles in the center median trying to clean this accident up. like we said, about five-minute to 10-minute delay on westbound i-4, around mile marker 42. is that what you are seeing on the traffic maps? yes. as you look closer you can see traffic backing up in the westbound lanes; also seeing onlooker delays eastbound. get out the door a little early if you're in this area, maybe trying to get to the tampa area. here's the crash on the map. the roads are starting to dry out. where we see green, that is where the roads are still wet now.

crash site was covered in green but right now your speed on i-4 not too bad. in the 60s a little while -- a little while ago 70s. no delays but you still want to be careful there. the roads are mainly wet south of i-4, the blue area is where we have ponding left over from the rain but all along i-75 dry out there since the overnight rain. the were wet when i drove -- the roads were wet when i drove in but seem to be drying out pretty good. in problems on i-75, selmon expressway overlooking i-75. just five minutes from the selmon to downtown. we were talking about wet roads, no more rain expected for today so that is good. by the way, weather and traffic together, it is, in fact technically it's weather and traffic together.

other and so this machine here tells the other machine hey, it's been raining heavily in this area and so that is why janelle gets all the layers as far as the colors there. it's a pretty accurate machine. we'll keep you posted. rain over in highlands county. not severe, just moderate rainfall left over. flying in closer and showing you placid lakes, just the back side, light rain at this point. so in pretty good shape as we all begin to clear out and we continue to see that on a wider perspective. see the storm system well to the north alone. this is the frontal boundary depicted nicely. by the way, a lot of action to the south. florida highway patrol reporting a tornado touched down across portions of collier county, along east 75, alligator alley. big stuff here but for us don't have to worry about that. as far as the forecast, looking good. in fact by lunchtime you're outside. sunshine and temperature in the low 70s. breaking overnight -- if you are not near your tv now do me a favor and take a second

it's right here. authorities are asking for your help right now, they are trying to find this missing 6-year-old girl. they think this child could be in grave danger. that child is missing from miami, her name is ashley martinez. and the fdle put out a missing child alert for her early this morning. again, that child may be traveling with a woman who has been identified as 53-year-old lily hatton, it's not clear if they are related but we know that many of you have friends and family in south florida, so we're asking you to take a second and share her picture, when it shows up in your newsfield. if you see them call 911. news feed. firefighters battling a mobile home fire. this is in winter drive. a couple in their 80s inside did make it out safely. we're told the red cross will help them find a place to stay. no word yet on a cause of the fire. right now we're trying to get an estimate on how much

ripped through escambia county in the florida panhandle. we know at least 10 homes were destroyed or severely damaged. fortunately no deaths though we heard it took a while for crews to rescue a 94-year-old woman trapped in her home after the storm. right now four pensacola schools are closed because they don't have power. 6:04. new developments in a big breaking story we told you about all morning long at this time yesterday. the woman that you see here, that woman there, she is accused of hitting and killing a tow truck driver on the howard frankland bridge, then driving off. she's in custody now, set to amir in court in a few -- appear in court in a few hours. investigators tell us alison huffman used an ail alias for a trip to the hard rock casino. she somehow got into her car and then drove across the bridge and troopers say then she hit roger perez as he tried to tow a stranded driver. at 6:30, rodney dunigan is

that has perez' friends why the woman even still had a license. this case is just the latest in an alarming trend across our state. new numbers from fhp show an uptick in hit-and-runs in our state last year. troopers investigated more than 92,000 hit-and-run crashes in 2015. more than 7,400 more than 2014. those crashes killed 186 people last year. that's pretty much equal to one person dying in a hit-and-run every other day. 6:05. we have new information on two murder cases we're tracking throughout the bay area. we start in hillsborough county where deputies are just revealing to us that these two people may know a man killed over the weekend in a parking lot near usf. deputies think afron rosado and jeffra dejesus carino may have more information about the murders. michael fuentes body was found off sycamore court off bruce b downs.

the death but authorities not revealing how he died. in manatee county deputies are just identifying a suspected murderer. investigators looking for ahmed dunbar, thinking he may have been involved with two murders. you remember two men were found dead minutes apart last month. two other suspects are already behind bars in this case. detectives believe the suspects wanted revenge on the victims for a robbery. we checked overnight and found out a man accused of cyber stalking women is facing a judge this morning. deputies believe william beagle used social media sites to reach out to the women even after they blocked him. one victim told investigators he threatened to stab her. beagle's mom says her son was set up. >> is he looking to go to prison? three different women? all i know is, i mean, he wouldn't hurt a fly. i know that. but i mean to -- i mean --

illinois, having been charged with stuff like that i can't see him doing something like that again. >> beagle was also charged with violating probation for an aggravated stalking case. his mom said that case happened out of state and she says her son wasn't guilty of that either. florida lawmaker will spell out a new plan to help people with country. congressman david jolley will unveil how he plans to take a florida law and make it go national. a news crew will go to the announcement in st. petersburg today. check for updates starting with "the now" at had 4:00. bradenton is the latest florida city to have a woman lead the police force. melanie bevin is set to be sworn in as bradenton's police chief at 3:00 in the bradenton auditorium. she spent 27 years in st. petersburg police, replaces the current chief who is retiring. still ahead -- heartstopping discovery in a

6:10. a california mother facing attempted murder charges after workers at a subway restaurant made a gruesome discovery in a bathroom. >> a crying newborn baby found alone in a toilet. police near los angeles say employees rushed to the bathroom after bleeding woman walked out of the store and that's when they found the baby in the toilet. people who worked nearby say the mother is homeless, frequently seen in the area right now no word on how that baby is doing. former new england patriots player aaron hernandez settled a lawsuit filed by a friend who says he shot him in the face. "the boston globe" reporting attorneys for alexander bradley filed court documents in miami that the suit was settled. disclosed. bradley claimed hernandez shot him in 2013 after arguing at a miami nightclub. hernandez is serving a life sentence for the 2013 shooting death of semi pro football player odon lloyd. most of the counties dry,

over but we're in pretty good shape. severe weather threat over. we're zooming in across polk county, at this point we're looking at dry and that is excellent news because a pretty horrific crash and the investigation associated with it is underway now. here's janelle with the latest. we've been following this crash all morning. corey dierdorff on scene. you can see the live pictures now, pretty violent crash, a truck ran off the road and flipped over. killing one person inside that truck. this happened in polk city, coming up we'll have more on any traffic problems and how

fatal crash on i-4, polk county, polk city east of lakeland. look what happened here. that truck you see there ran off the road and flipped, landed upside down. the driver of that car, of that truck was killed. this happened just before 3:00 this morning in the westbound lanes so if you're heading into the tampa area or even into lakeland from polk city we are seeing some slight delays here. i want to show you this area on my map. you can see it here. a little bit of a slowdown, just slightly red as you pull up on this crash so you definitely want to leave a good extra five to 10 minutes if heading westbound on i-4 from the polk city area. now, i am seeing some wet roads

earlier this entire area was covered in green. that is an indication that the roads are wet but roads starting to slowly dry out. so if you're heading out the door the wet roads may not be a problem for you. we have an alert from sarasota, they are saying the lights out at u.s. 301 and 12th street, due to an earlier crash, pretty serious crash here. they sent us this picture along with that advisory, police are out there directing traffic because this car ran into one of the light poles. when you see images like this it's just a reminder to all of us to drive with caution, put down the phones and stay alert, especially on a morning like this where you might run into some wet roads. one thing we don't have to deal with, the rain actually coming down during the morning commute. you don't need the severe weather threat to be ongoing to have issues on the roadways. in fact investigation will complete and they will determine if weather was a factor but i must tell you at the time it happened it was pouring over polk county. all of that now headed to the south and east.

across portions of pinellas county and parts of hillsborough. strongest winds about 40 miles per hour but we did have flying -- freak lightning frequent lightning and trenches downpours. now you can see the squall line from the southern part of the peninsula extending east. on the back side is our weather today. clear sky and plenty of sunshine. in fact for the bus stop if you were off yesterday with the kids they are back in school today as temperatures go back in the low 70s. you won't need the rain gear this morning if you're headed out now. it's going to be dry and not going to rain the rest of the day. we'll have temperatures in the lower 70s with plenty of sunshine as we check the temperatures, upper 50s to low 60s now. so maybe a light jacket if you're sensitive to the cooler temperatures but i think we'll be in pretty good shape. in fact with full sunshine we'll be in the low 70s this afternoon. that is going to feel mighty nice, that is how it's going to go. the trend for the next few days will be for more sunshine and

we're not looking at any cold air behind this front. certainly anything significant. it will dry us out. we have another feature coming through. you won't notice it, it's just going to reinforce our fantastic weather that begins later today and continues into thursday. look at the temperatures here, low 70s. that is nice. mid 70s friday and saturday. i think the weekend looks great with partial sunshine, mostly sunny skies, really with just a few fair weather clouds, temperatures in the mid-70s. next shot of rain is monday with a few showers. if you check your twitter feed you may see "mean tweets." >> jimmy kimmel gathered some of the biggest names in music, no one was safe. >> jake looks like a ferret with a baby afro. tower tampa camera in tampa. wet streets. monitoring all morning. today pope francis is spending his last full day in friday. he is set to visit the violent state and now one of his top advisors is commenting about sex abuse in the catholic church. the boston cardinal sean o'malley says bishops have a moral and ethical responsibility to report all cases of sex abuse to police. his comments go beyond the vatican's current tbloins for bishops. for decades bishops move rapists from parish to parish rather than turn them in to police. jodi arias lost visitation privileges for six months for calling a female officer a vulgar name. it was after her request for a hair cut was denied. she has to be on best behavior for 180 days to get visitation reinstated.

without parole for killing her boyfriend in 2008. she admitted to stabbing and shooting him. saying it was in self-defense. the stormy weather woke up a lot of people last night. >> we had tornado warnings well to our south. it continues to head east and we're pretty much done as far as the heavy rain that was associated with all of this. highlands county is about it as far as the last of the wet weather. clearing skies and it will happen rapidly this morning. sun will help temperatures get up to the low 70s. that is where we'll be later this afternoon. i'll have the forecast coming up, over the weekend some slight changes otherwise looking pretty decent. that is coming up in the next half-hour. 6:26. still ahead -- manhunt over. we're digging into the past of a woman accused of fleeing from a deadly crash and dumping her car. why some are questioning whether she should have been allowed to drive.

at 6:30. janelle is tracking a deadly accident on i-4 near the polk parkway. >> busy stretch of the interstate. >> absolutely. for people leaving polk city and trying to head to lakeland or even tampa. this is the main stretch. i-4 westbound, there it is

that truck ran off the road and flipped, landed on the top and one person killed in this crash. this happened just before 3:00 this morning and ivan tells us it was really pouring at that time. no word yet if the wet roads played a role in this crash, but we're seeing backups. you can see it here on the fdot camera, the westbound lanes passing through that crash. a little bit of a slowdown, no major delays but leave a good 5 to 10 extra minutes. this is the crash area on my map. will it pick up the speed at that crash? earlier it was about 60 and slowed down just as you got on to that crash site. so definitely want to leave a little early. the roads drying out, wet roads is what you see in green. earlier, this entire area was covered in green. again starting to slowly dry out so if you're heading out the door now hopefully you won't be dealing with some really wet roads. couple of other crashes, one eastbound state road 54 at the collier parkway, in pasco

definitely seeing slowdowns on 54 and southbound on collier parkway. also have a crash in pinellas, belcher at brian derry road. captain al is heading to the scene of the crash. have you gotten there and what are you seeing? >> reporter: i'm a couple of miles away but dan has a great shot of it there, the headlights are eastbound, headed towards u.s. 19. and belcher road. apparently if this is an accident it's now been cleared up and moved out of of the way. no problems, olmerton road, i saw activity south of the airport but probably a minor disefnt, no traffic problems there. we'll keep watching that. pretty good visibility from action air 1, things are beginning to dry out. in fact some light showers left over for highlands county. all of us dried out and we're done with the rainfall as far as this morning. it came down pretty heavily.

but frequent lightning which i'm sure woke a lot of folks up. then that severe thunderstorm warning in effect for portions of pinellas county and hillsborough county as well. that is done and no word of any significant damage. wouldn't expect, highest winds were 40 miles per hour but the frequent lightning probably led to the power outages. sunshine for the rest of today, temperatures in the low 70s. lunch outside looking good, 60 degrees by 8: 00. we'll talk about the extended forecast and slightly cooler air moving in. details coming up. 6:32. uncovering shocking details as we look into the driving record of the woman charged with a deadly hit-and-run accident we first told you about yesterday morning >> this is allison huffman, she's getting ready to face a judge. we found out this woman is no stranger to the courtroom. abc action news reporter rodney dunigan joins us live near the foot of the howard frankland bridge very close to the scene of the accident. rodney, what have you learned this morning?

due in court at 1:30. the scene behind me towards the howard frankland bridge, traffic running smoothly this morning but that was not the case following that crash. and investigation yesterday morning. huffman was caught last night at an apartment complex in st. pete after a daylong search. it turns out this is not as you mentioned her first run-in with the law. she has a long history of dui arrests, yet still allowed to legally drive. we were able to get a bit of video of huffman taken into custody last night. she's accused of hitting and killing that truck driver roger perez as he helped a stranded driver. investigators say huffman sped off from the accident scene, her car later found at the crowne plaza hotel not far from that crash. back out here live, again that hearing is set for 1:30 today and the question will repeatedly come up today why after all of these dui arrests was huffman allowed to drive. that is a question we hope to get answered later today. for now reporting live near the howard frankland bridge, rodney

in just hours -- a man will learn how long he'll spend in prison for abusing his son so horribly the 3-year-old died. justin garwacky took the stand against cara o'connell, his ex- girlfriend to escape a life sentence. last week a jury found o'connell guilty of manslaughter. she and garwacky face up to 30 years behind bars. 6:34. an 18-year-old woman accused of stealing from guests at the hyatt regency in clearwater is expected to be in court this afternoon. camry clark and a 15-year-old are accused of stealing a master key from a maid's cart, police say they broke into four different hotel rooms on valentine's day and stole more than $1,200 worth of electronics and valuables. the hyatt regency released a statement saying "management is fully cooperating with the investigation." look at photos just in of a raging house fire in northport. rescuers say the homeowner got out of this coca road home safely after the flames broke out around 11:00 last night.

extensive it's not safe to live there. no word yet on what caused the fire. the coast guard is going to try to figure out who is to blame for the sinking of the el faro last fall. we reported for months a cargo ship set sail during a hurricane and sank near the bahamas killing all 33 crew members on board. a series of hearings in jacksonville will begin today. those hearings will work to determine whether misconduct, negligence or bad safety inspections led to the disaster. el faro's missing brach -- black box data recorder could help as well. a second search for is is that the works now. an accident in miami is getting a lot of attention on facebook. a garbage truck driver in serious condition about lucky to be alive after losing control on i-95 and plunging 100 feet on the interstate blow. it crashed through a concrete

no one on the ground was hurt. that truck fell on to the parking lot of a park that is normally packed with kids attending after-school programs. it was empty yesterday because of the presidents' day holiday. again amazingly the driver survived but is in serious condition. tornado warnings continue at this hour across south florida but we're in the clear. we're in fact going to get very clear with plenty of sunshine this afternoon. what happens after the front and the rest of the week? coming up. i'm janelle martinez in the traffic center. we're following breaking news. a fatal accident on i-4 starting to see delays westbound so if you're heading out of polk city into lakeland or even tampa do expect some delays. i'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes.

we're following a fatal crash on i-4, look at that truck there. ran off the road and flipped over. the driver of that truck was killed. this happened just before 3:00 a.m. ivan tells us it was really rainy in polk county at that time. no word yet on if the wet roads played a role in this crash but since it's a fatality investigators will be out there for some time. it's backing up traffic, these are the westbound lanes leading up to the crash, even seeing some slowdown in the eastbound lanes for some onlooker delays there. look where the backups start, state road 559, this is about two miles back. i want to show you this crash on the map so you can see the delay. again starting 559, you may want to consider getting off there. you can even try broadway, commonwealth avenue and getting around back to i-4 that way. you want to start thinking about alternates now because again we're starting to see this backup here on i-4 if

this trying to get to lakeland or maybe the tampa area. we have a crash causing pretty significant delays in pasco county, eastbound state road 54 at collier parkway. the major backups on 54 so again leave yourself extra time. captain al is in pinellas county flying over a crash on belcher and brian derry. what are you seeing? >> reporter: good morning. we first thought there was an accident in the corner there but that might have been a traffic stop. a little west, westbound, you can see that car, don't know if it broke down, it's not a good spot to be. the wrecker is already here though. they got traffic blocked both lanes now but only for a minute for the wrecker to get in there. traffic is building through this part of pinellas county. no delays otherwise. rain is over at this point so we're in pretty good shape.

rolling through in the overnight hours. there it is as we get to sunshine out here. just a sign of things to come. i think you're going to like the extended forecast as we check in. temperatures are going to fluctuate but looking pretty good. as far as the heaviest of the rain, i'll loop this, the last hour or so, you see he just the vestiges of the rainfall. we're pretty much clear. what is going to happen hereafter? temperatures already in the low 60s so we have a pretty good head start. sometimes you get the fronts rolling through and the air mass behind it, is a cold front, much colder. this time around not as cold, it's going to be dry, that means humidity is going to be in check and going to feel fantastic. southwesterly winds will eventually go northwest as we head in behind the front. temperatures beginning to fall back a little bit and as we head through tonight cool but certainly not frigid by any stretch of the imagination, low 70s this afternoon. our highs should be in the low 70s.

we are in florida so for us it is low 70s. rain ending, clearing skies, westerly winds around 5 to 10 and 7-day forecast, low 50s tonight, wake up to that tomorrow morning. so good 10 degrees above where we are right now, as you would expect behind a cold front. but look at the temperatures with full sunshine getting in the low 70s both wednesday and thursday. so can we continue the trend that will in fact not only continue it but temperatures even a little milder by friday afternoon with temperatures kicking off the weekend into the mid-70s. that is how it will stay saturday and sunday. our next shot of rainfall, 20% coverage, we have plenty of time to tweak that forecast coming up for next monday. so beginning now, sunshine and mild temperatures. turning now to democracy 2016 -- we'll be watching to see if donald trump's feud with senator ted cruz will head to court before saturday's south carolina primary. >> the billionaire businessman is threatening to sue cruz if

about trump's positions." that lawsuit would challenge cruz' eligibility to be president because cruz was born in canada. trump accused cruz of stealing a victory in the iowa caucuses by spreading false rumors that ben carson had dropped out of the race. he also took aim at the bush family as former president george w bush campaigned for his brother jeb. >> the brother is coming into town which is of course lovely. ever ask yourself why his brother went silent all those years? no, don't ask yourself that. >> this comes after trump and jeb bush clashed last weekend after trump declared 9/11 happened on george w bush's watch. on the democratic side hillary clinton gave a dog of a speech while campaigning in nevada just days before that state goes to the polls. while telling a story about a republican who she accused of twisting the truth about the great recession. clinton says she was reminded of an old radio ad where a dog would bark every time a

justice's doctor told her saturday that he had a history of heart trouble and that he was too weak to undergo surgery for a recent shoulder injury. meanwhile democrats are accusing republicans of putting politics ahead of their constitutional duty to vote on a replacement for justice scalia. senate republicans insist president obama's successor should be the one to fill the vacancy. the president plans to nominate a replacement as soon as next week. an attorney for eliot spitzer now says the former new york governor didn't assault a woman in a new york hotel. the lawyer says that woman wanted to see spitzer before returning to her home country of russia. she claims spitzer choked and shoved her while arguing over her travel plans. she did leave on a plane sunday and didn't press charges. spitzer resigned as governor in 2008 amid revelations he had sex with prostitutes. he has -- he was never charged. a 14-year-old wisconsin girl is recovering from what is being called a freak accident that happened during a basketball game. she was trying to steal the ball during the game last weekend when she collided with

i-4 westbound, this happened in polk city east of lakeland. you can see it there, a truck ran off the road and flipped. landed on top of itself. but the driver of that truck was killed. this happened just before 3:00 this morning when it was pouring in that area. no word yet on if those wet roads played a role in this crash. fdot cameras picking this up pretty good. crash in the westbound lanes, also seeing some onlooker delays eastbound, this backup starts about two miles back at state road 559. if we look on a map you can see the backup on i-4, ugmight want to take broadway -- you might want to take broadway boulevard to commonwealth and come along that way. start thinking of an alternate instead of i-4 because again it's pretty backed up this morning. also seeing some improvement in pasco county, crash here at eastbound state road 54 at collier parkway seems to be in

how are things where you are? >> reporter: getting busy in pinellas. u.s. 19 over east bay, you can see almost up to tarpon springs as they proceed this week. no increasing problems. however at starkey and toward island there's activity there. we're going to head there but otherwise the roads seem to be ok. rain clearing at this point. rapid clearing in fact, lunch, 71 degrees, sunshine. we'll keep it nice and sunny through the evening commute with temperatures around 70 degrees. we're following breaking news in pinellas county. we're monitoring some power outages now. we're told many don't have power. >> 2,100 without power in clearwater. nearly 4,000 without power on gandy bridge east of i-275.

back to normal by 8:00 this morning. a missing child alert is active for a 6-year-old girl from the miami area. she could be anywhere now. fdle tells us ashley martinez is believed to be with lily hatton. the relationship is not clear. you can get word out about the 6-year-old by sharing her picture from our facebook pages. the woman accused of hitting and killing a tow truck driver yesterday morning is set to face a judge in pinellas county this afternoon. allison huffman was caught last night at an apartment complex in st. pete after a daylong search. investigators believe that she drove off after hitting and killing tow truck driver roger perez on the howard frankland bridge just before rush hour yesterday morning. 21-year-old woman accused of stabbing a man in sulfur springs park is also expected in court this morning. tampa police say ashlee weathers tried to kick the man into the river during an argument and stabbed him twice with a small pocket knife he's in the hospital now in stable condition.
