12:30 pm
right here in this area. in southern -- between woodmeer and englewood. if you're in this area -- i would definitely stay indoors away from doors and windows. half hour, 45 minutes as this moves on shore. does look like what we're seeing in this area right now, i'm starting to see rotation detected. granted it has weakened some. the overall batch of storms has weakened some. the radar is showing there could be some rotation. right now the tornado warning,
12:31 pm
warning has been extended. manatee, southwestern polk county. it has moved -- it is in effect through 1:00 this afternoon. let's see. so we're getting a -- just trying to update my radar here. so here we go. yep. now we do have an active tornado warning for -- we have a tornado warning in effect. grove city. excuse me. this is going to be moving across warm mineral springs. this is going to be heading into the north port area.
12:32 pm
want to stay indoors away from doors and windows until this storm passes. this one i would say is more impressive now than what it was just a few minutes ago. we are showing early rotation markers. again, this storm is moving to the northeast. this one is moving at -- it is moving east at about 30 miles per hour. so if you are in the path of this storm, if you're in woodmere. 12:45 is when that batch of storms will be on top of your area. you definitely want to stay indoors away from doors and windows. if you are seeing any damage or reports please let us know here on facebook or on twitter and you can also find us on abc action news.
12:33 pm
southern sarasota county where we do have what looks like some rotation being associated with a batch of storms moving on shore and moving to the hour. this is in the englewood area. severe thunderstorm warning is also in place in that yellow box and that moves into the north port area. we have another tornado warning county. this is touching into the hillsboro county area and into southwestern polk county. that storm cell did look like it was starting to weaken. it started to intensify again. downpours and gusty winds. i haven't seen a ton of lightning out of this system. heavy downpours, gusty winds. winds in excess of 60 miles per hour. so if you're in the path of
12:34 pm
little too late. i wouldn't recommend grabbing your patio furniture. this is the kind of weather that could create some damage as this storm system moves through. it's going to move through rapidly with the exception of the englewood area. we have such a large batch of storm the to the southwest that even after that first initial line moves into your area it's going to be another half hour to 45 minutes before this all moves through. and so this one is going to take a little bit longer. i'm going to turn the storm tracks back on so you can see our tightened doppler radar great at detecting when we have rotation with a storm. this is showing that we have rotation offshore. now it's actually showing two markers of potential for rotation. it's showing the flooding impact is at a 4-point. this is a 1 to 10 scale.
12:35 pm
the tornado impact is near zero. what this means is that the storm is starting to lose that rotation. it was showing stronger chances for rotation earlier. however when i go to the northern -- so we have the two markers there. one to the north and one a little farther to the south. the northern rotating marker has a greater chance of creating a tornado. again, this is 1 to 10 scale. still somewhat marginal. the bottom line being we are detecting rotation with this storm. it's a serious storm. i would not -- i wouldn't say that if i didn't feel that way. the bottom line is laura harris is with me live now too. we're on facebook as well as live on air. we have two active tornado warnings. have you been finding any pictures on twitter? >> it's interesting. we've been -- a lot of people are saying what's going on, what's happening.
12:36 pm
we're seeing a lot of rain on the skyway in that area. people are still trying to get to their houses, i guess, to try to get more information as to what's going on. i really haven't seen anything on twitter or facebook. please send us your pictures if you have them. we're on facebook now. we really want to see the pictures outside of your door, which is why we're using so many different platforms right now. my next question for you though is it's interesting how this keeps getting extended. at first it was 12:05. then it was 12:10. now it's 1:00. those areas? >> let me go back and tell you here. so right now when i take the rain off of the map you can see a little better here what's going on. we have this red box in southern sarasota county and then the red box going through
12:37 pm
this is where we have that tornado warning that is active and the red box down here also active. let me check the times on these. now we're dealing with multiple warnings. we have one -- the one in manatee county is until 1:00. and we also have the tornado warning until 1:00. all of these are until 1:00 now. now they're matching up on the timing. so we have a storm moving a little bit faster that is here in manatee county. moving into southern polk county. could brush the edge of hillsborough or hardy county. moving more easterly with this storm system. that's why you see it moving into the port charlotte area, north port affected. the yellow or orange box you're seeing here, this is a severe thunderstorm warning. we have one on top of the other. i would say this is where we are more likely to see some damage. this one is nothing to joke about either.
12:38 pm
to weaken and then it just started to fire up. i thought we'd see that expire early but we didn't. it really started to intensify. weather is unpredictable. the tornado watch boxes that were in effect through 10:00 this morning, those had expired and now things started to fire up again. the clear. that's why we continue to monitor the weather -- things are constantly changing. it is nature after all. bottom line is if you're in any stay away from windows. if you do get anything blowing around outside or happen to have weak trees in your yard, make sure you're away from the windows so you don't get injured. if you can safely snap a picture if if the storms are past your area. it's good to be able to make the storm reports too. i'll put the radar back into motion here so we can see -- >> i want people to know the reason i'm holding this ipad is because we're also on facebook live. for people who aren't able to get to a television right now we'd love for you to join us on facebook live.
12:39 pm
or cell phone so you can really see what's going on. can i give you this so you can hold it -- if you guys have questions for us you can really ask them. i think another problem becomes a lot of people are saying okay, so when this thing moves out, pickers crossed it doesn't look like it did in the panhandle. when this moves out what can we expect after that? >> the winds are going to continue to be gusty and we're talking gusts to 35 miles per hour. that will continue into tonight. seeing someone -- just rain and thunder in the distance. wendy in north port. if you're in north port right now, this is what's headed your way. wendy, this is what i want you to keep an eye on. i'll zoom in farther here and you can see what is headed -- it's like that dark area. it's the dark area. there's also rotation here. you can start to see it. this. right here. see how that spun? >> that's what people are talking about on twitter and
12:40 pm
>> englewood right now is getting hit not only with strong winds but some heavy downpours and this is what's headed your way. wendy in north port, so stay indoors. if you do have to hit the roads right now, make sure you have got storm shield so you can get alerts. if you're outside of this area, anywhere northeast of this area, you'll find out on storm shield that the warnings have been continued. if they are continued. so that's the best way to continue to get alerts if you have to leave the house right now and you are anywhere to the northeast of these storm systems, of these two cells. so if you are anywhere in polk county and you have to leave manatee county into desotto, i would make sure you have a get the warnings. just like this one, that one
12:41 pm
and then still continued. a lot of the radar was showing this was weakening. back up. >> any way anyone in the control room, can you all see the cameras outside? sunshine skyway. producers are saying. >> let me zoom into that area. you can see why. we have a stark contrast between -- let's take a look at the mai sail. >> in is still in sarasota county. you can see -- >> look at that. yeah. >> manatee county, i'm sorry. farther south and to the east is where we're seeing that potential.
12:42 pm
this is where that heavy rain is coming down and where this cell is located right now. >> what are the rainfall totals looking like? some people were worried about flooding in the same places it always floods. >> it's coming down at a rate of two and three quarters of an inch per hour. that's heavy rain. i think the one thing that's working in our favor with this storm cell is that it's in an area that just isn't highly populated and it doesn't have any of our major roads. so if you're in las vegas, and that's las vegas, florida -- >> right. >> right. you're in the path of this storm system. but, again, this is -- so if anything this is good news that the location of this very strong cell is in an area that isn't highly populated. however, certainly matters to the people who live there stay indoors away from windows. >> i've got a couple questions for you. these are people who are on facebook live right now.
12:43 pm
what's it going to do south. they're wardening what it's going to look like in hernando county soon. >> in herman doe county. around i-75. we're clearing out. we're getting a little bit of rain that will move across i- 75. north brooksville. pine island, you're seeing the drier air starting to filter in. anywhere north of i-4 you're in good shape. it's south of i-4 where we have the concern. the biggest concern because of population density and the severity of this storm cell is this area i'm zooming in on right now. it is just north of englewood. moving across 45 around south venice. it's going to be moving across the i-75 corridor right here near north port. support charlotte. you're not -- port charlotte. you're not completely out of the mix.
12:44 pm
gusty winds. we're talking about some heavy downpours. potential for rotation which does mean tornado -- a possibility of a tornado. we are looking at a tornado warning in that area. it's in effect for another 17 minutes. actually 16 minutes now. so i'll put the radar off and you can see this warning. it extends from rotunda to south venice. it's across 45. if you're in the englewood area, that is where the -- you're the main target. that storm system. >> sorry to interrupt you. more questions for you from social media right now. two questions for you. severe damage. we have seen just communities some people are asking the question are we going to see anything like that here -- and have you seen any tornadoes actually touch down in the
12:45 pm
>> we have not had any reported tornadoes. we have had three warnings. two of them active -- four warnings total. one of them active much earlier this morning for extreme northwestern polk county. and we have not seen any reports of any tornadoes on the ground from that. what we are seeing right now are the other warnings that are in place for a portion of manatee, southern polk county and also in sarasota county. no tornadoes reported on the ground. >> great to hear. i think the control room has river gate tower camera. that's the one looking out in tampa and check out that rain in the back ground. that's what you're talking about. >> yeah. >> that's ut right there in the middle of your screen. and then it's -- so then -- >> so we have quite a contrast in weather. if you're south of i-4, that's where you're seeing the chance for severe weather. to the north it's hit or miss rain.
12:46 pm
a couple of heavy downpours. all right along the i-75 corridor. depending on which view you're looking at. we are live on facebook. we're also live on abc action news. depending on which source you're getting your video are. take a look at this. this is where the front is just offshore. i-75 you're getting rainfall. it's south of i-4 where we have the bulk of the heavy stuff. that's where the nasty weather is the general motion of this batch is more easterly. you have the whole front pushing all of that across the state. so we have -- two different storm motions to this system. still seeing rotation here. this line is moving inland, more easterly. but the whole system is going
12:47 pm
it has been in general weakening as it's been doing so. i'll take the radar off again so you can see where the two active warnings are. we have one into southern -- just grasping -- just brushing the edge of hillsborough county. primarily into southwestern polk county. county road 664. a pretty rural area. this is totients of duette. the storm system is moving off to the northeast. our other area of concern for gusty winds, possibly some rotation is in southern sarasota county. this is moving across south venice, englewood, grove city, warm mineral springs.
12:48 pm
woodmere also in the path of this storm. south river road. all across southern sarasota county. i-75 is certainly impacted heavily. if you can stay off the roads right now in this area across i- 75 i would definitely do that. again, this is a little more easterly. as i track this storm i'll zoom in here and you can see the movement. >> while you do that, i want people to know you're updating them on twitter as well. we'll let you know if there's stuff going on at tampa bay weather. a lot of people are saying okay, so maybe i see the rain coming my way. but what's the deal after the tornado watch and warnings are over are we still going to see maybe flooding in the area? sun city center looks okay at their house but there's a
12:49 pm
>> in sun city center you are in better shape. i'll zoom out. port charlotte, cleveland, tuckers corner. this is the general direction that this is headed. if you're south of i-4, this is where you have still got a good chance for the heavy downpours, the gusty winds associated with the storms and the path of this potentially tornadic storm is headed in that general direction. once we move north of there, so sun city center, we move into that area, and you're looking at a chance for a little more rain to come through your area. and that is about it. so you are in the clear in that area. granted sun city center is still south of i-4. you're not looking at the nastiness and the potential for severe weather we have in southern sarasota county and also here associated with this cell that
12:50 pm
just about to make it into southwestern polk county. so that one is moving off to -- >> of course i'm no meteorologist so i'm just trying to figure this out here. i'm not seeing any lightning strikes on this. is that because that's not the radar we're checking out or has the lightning -- that was getting scary. >> i'm turning the lightning back on. >> now i see it. okay. >> it's a great question you're asking, laura. because i often look at lightning as an indication as to whether or not a storm system is intensifying or whether it's weakening. so the last numbers we pulled strikes. now we're seeing about 109. that does show it's either maintaining its strength or intensifying some. the box changes size and it changes the number of lightning strikes. so i might not have grabbed them all in that last one when we were showing 90.
12:51 pm
it is moving on shore in sarasota near englewood. and you can see just how intense this is. all those white lines there. that's the lightning. see how it flashed there? see how that white light. that is an active lightning strike. we get great data coming in with this. i'll put on our storm tracks again. so this is another way we look at a storm and identify its intensity and whether or not it has the potential for spin. so when we see that yellow circle it is showing that there is a possibility for some spin. we look at the tornado impact and it's near zero. what this is saying is that is may have some rotation but it's not intense in enough -- at least by radar indications, not intense enough to create an actual tornado. it wouldn't get from the cloud to the ground is what this is showing. the wind impact is still there and the flooding impact is definitely there at a 4.8.
12:52 pm
storm basically may have some damaging winds with it, most likely is going to have some heavy downpours that could lead to some street flooding as it continues to move northeast. but the radar is showing not really all that likely that it would create a tornado. these are great signs but it doesn't mean you should let down your guard. we do still have a tornado warning in place for another 8 minutes in this area. i'll take the radar off again. >> does it look like it's going to be extended? like they did before, twice. >> there have been a few surprises here today. right now i would say if if any of them do get extended it would be more likely the one moving into northwestern -- southwestern polk county. because of what the radar is indicating. it is showing a line of it holding together for possibly another hour. whereas this storm even though it looks so much more impressiven radar here as we're looking at it in southern sarasota county.
12:53 pm
i'm getting shows it may not hold together quite as well. bottom line is we're going to continue watching this and we'll keep letting you know. at this point in time i'll check the storm reports and see if we're getting any storm reports. i did this earlier and i'm not seeing any storm reports out of those two systems. in fact, even earlier this morning i mentioned we had that tornado warning, it was up in northwestern polk county in this general area. it was only issued for about 5 to 10 minutes and we haven't seen any reports of wind damage or nighest out of that. the only place we have seen any reports of strong winds this morning have been from clear water beach and that was a 40 miles per hour wind speed and also from southern pinellas county. that was in downtown st. pete. that's still below damaging levels. so damaging winds would be in
12:54 pm
we're not seeing that out of it. at least being reported just yet. sometimes the reports take time to trickle in. if something damages your house you may not be calling the national weather service right away to report the damage. but nowadays with twitter we tend to get reports very quickly and pictures coming in. if you are seeing any damage in your area, you're seeing any flooding in your neighborhood and you can safely take a picture, by all means, feel free to send it. >> how about this one? i'm getting this information from kelly hall. she says she's in lake wales, so it her daughter. her daughter has early release from school. they're getting them out at 1:00. >> what area? >> lake wales. >> okay, if you're in lake wales. >> if it's safe for you to, take a photo of what's outside of your door. if it's safe we would love for you to send us your pictures so we know what it looks like. >> so lake wales as you're
12:55 pm
you can see where she's at in this general area and she's saying hey in the next 20 minutes my kids are getting let out of school. this is what's heading your way. we have very small storm cells, one just south of fort meade and one in the extreme southwestern part of the state. you are in that general direction where this rain is headed and where those storms are headed. will they hold together? could they be powerful enough to cause you any problems? at this point it's a little uncertain. what i would tell you though is to make sure you've got rain gear and it's great you're picking your child up and they're not planning on walking home. if you have kids with early release in polk county and they'll be headed out the door in the next 20 minutes, if you can, pick them up instead of letting them walk or ride their bikes. would encourage that. crooked lake park, lake mead. this will roll through quickly. it's moving about 25 to 35 miles per hour.
12:56 pm
reaches your area to move out of your area. again, it's a northeasterly movement of storms. once it moves into baird you'll be done in about 10, 15 minutes you're seeing the heavy rain right now. but this is moving out of the area so quickly that 10, 15 minutes and it's beyond you at that point. so we'll continue to see this moving off in that area. lake wales, great question there about picking your kids up. certainly want to be cautious about where you're headed and keep an eye to the sky. but i would say definitely want to get the kids from school instead of letting them ride their bikes, walk home, that sort of thing. again, this is a large line associated with a cold front. behind this cold front we're going to have the cooler, drier air moving in. these warnings, the tornado warning, the severe thunderstorm warning and the tornado warning to the south
12:57 pm
so there is a possibility it could expire in the next three minutes and 15 seconds. we'll see it gets extended. >> starting to see a lot of people saying okay the sun is out, now the it's raining again. they need to pay attention to what you're seeing. this is what we're talking about. itst a florida pattern. it's raining, sunny, we don't know if it's safe until this expires. >> location is everything. here i'm going to pinpoint on here. i-4 through downtown tampa to the north. you're looking at typical showers, a heavy downpour. if you are south of i-4, i-75 into sarasota counties, southern polk county, hardy, desoto, you're in the mix for a potential for severe weather. we have an active tornado warning right now that is moving into southern polk county.
12:58 pm
warning in severe thunderstorm warning for southern sarasota county. this is moving across the englewood area into the i-75 corridor. if this is where you live or if you're planning on heading into port charlotte, into arcadia, placid lakes. this heavy batch, at a minimum, heavy batch of rain and gusty, potentially damaging winds are all headed in your direction. it's all about location. even if you're seeing sunshine in parts of islands county. you're not out of the mix just yet for that heavy rain and gusty winds across i-75 in sarasota county. this is where at least over the next half hour i one taking a
12:59 pm
try to stay indoors if you can. farther to the north, we're seeing this tornado warning. in is the batch of storms heading across into the fort meade area. this is going to be just to the south, if not right on top of barto. this is going to be rolling through central polk county and continuing on this trajectory. this is going to move in between barto and lake wales and just off to winter haven. hopefully at that point by the time it makes it that far off
