it's 4:00 and that means that the now tampa bay is on. we're going to start with two breaking news stories right now. the first florida case of zika being transmitted sexually in polk county. the person got it while traveling overseas. we don't know who the person is. but the governor is asking the cdc to have another call with health care workers about how zika is spread and how to protect your several. several arrests made in polk county in the murder of a lakeland man. ryan raiche has more on this from winter haven. how did they find these people, ryan. stuff. take a close look at this. this is a family of four. the mug shots. there are so many. they all had a hand in the murder.

detectives, they all confessed. take a closer look. this is the johnson family and their friend, michael gund. they are accused in the murder of robert banks. they claim they killed banks as revenge for an alleged rape of someone close to them. >> they proceeded to beat robert viciously. they kicked him. they strangled him with an electrical cord. they beat him with a pipe. they be him with their fists. they beat him with sticks. >> reporter: and here is what led up to that. one of the brothers here actually called their father, brian johnson senior. he came over and helped them get rid of the body. the body was found in the swamp

they're not sure if it actually happened. but they will continue to continue the investigation. coming up at 5:00, i will explain what tipped them off on these guys involves a picture on a cell phone. that's coming up at 5:00. >> thank you, ryan. a jacksonville police officer is out of surgery expected to recover after being shot three times this morning, one shot to the head. it happened when the undercover officer pulled someone over earlier this morning. the story gets worse from here. the 14-year-old kid of that officer was in his unmarked car when it all happened. school. cops are still trying to figure out why the suspect even place. they do know he was shot several times as well. also. also in jacksonville right now, totally crazy story. a 4-year-old shoots his mother

the bullet going into the driver's seat and in her back. she is self described as pro guns. you can see her there holding her son with the gun. a deputy rolled up on the mom. she was trying to motion for help after she got help. a lot to figure out on this one as deputies are trying to figure out what happened. at last check, she was stable at the hospital. this afternoon, we finally know why there was big drama outside of the pin also county justice center in clearwater this morning. three bottles were wrapped in duck tape outside. people thought they might be explosives. thankfully it turned out to be a hoax. adding to the problem, pinellas 911 got a call while that was going on saying that a man was headed to the justice center to shoot the place up. lots of activity there.

business as usual in a different part of the courthouse where hulk hogan versus gawker trial is on three. a videotaped deposition was played of the former editor of gawker who published the sex tape that could ultimately cost them as much as $100 million. he says he doesn't know if hogan had that take and he was going to publish it but he knew he was going to do it anywhere. down. tonight on the now, we have a story a lot of people are scratching their heads about. a local elementary school criticized about this letter. they sent a letter home about kids getting in trouble. the problem is, it singled out specific students. about the letter. >> reporter: this letter was sent out monday here at

and this is actually a copy of that letter. some parents we talked to say they're not happy about how it was written. the letter starts off saying parents, we need your help. >> well, when i first got it, i thought it was something more specific to my son, just the way it was addressed. >> reporter: it was what was take. the flyer went on to say our behavior data is showing our black students are getting the majority of referrals at school and in part saying we need ideas on how we can improve our interactions with our black students to help them be more successful in school. >> maybe somebody should have looked over the letter before it went out to make sure it wasn't politically incorrect and stereo typing a race in the school. >> reporter: the district wouldn't go on camera with the now to explain the flyer but they gave us a statement saying unfortunately insensitive

and it was not approved by the district. so we asked for the numbers on kids referred. of the 144 referrals this school year, 61% were african- american students. 37% were caucasian students. students. >> maybe send out a letter showing the different races, the behavior issues and say, hey, we're having an issue. let's come together. we can see it ourselves where maybe the majority of the trouble is coming from. instead of them pointing it out and saying they're being bad. >> reporter: the flyer also went home to selective parents, asking them to come to a meeting at the school. leaving sherry with even more questions. >> why single out certain kids? why -- how did this happen? >> reporter: that meeting is scheduled for next wednesday at

a man manages to make off with $200,000 worth of quarters. that's 10,000 pounds. wait one second. it's about as big as a real life elephant. our partners at newsy have that. >> reporter: an alabama man admitted to stealing thousands of dollars from the federal government in quarters. stores cash and coins for the federal reserve bank in alabama. each bag contains $50,000. during an inventory check in 2014, authorities realized that missing. david lancaster davis worked for brinks in 2014. he replaced the missing coins with beads. the coins that he didn't steal were specifically placed in view of the bag's plastic window.

with each quarter weighing 5.67 grams, that's nearly five tons of quarters. the fbi linked the theft to denis and he was charged with one count of bank theft. he entered a bank fee and must reimburse the bank for every quarter he stole. it was the equivalent of a major bank heist. he faces a maximum of 10 years

>> breaking news here on the now tampa bay. check that out. we're looking at a tower cam right now. two homes have already been damaged from a brush fire just outside of orlando. that right there is night vision as they were showing that brush fire. again, two homes damaged. we're not hearing of any injuries and we don't know how it started. i was talking to shay a while ago and she was saying in central florida, the winds are strong so it's not helping the firefighters as they battle the blaze. right now the presidential race focus is now in florida. crucial for republicans because it's winner takes all. 99 delegates up for grabs right now. and we have brand-new numbers from a university poll on where voters stand ahead of the primary. here in florida, donald trump leading with 45% of the vote

marco rubio is in a distant second with 22%. cruz has 18. kasich, just 8%. the polls assistant director says rubio doesn't really have a shot at beating trump in his home state. interesting enough here, ted cruz first florida rally of the year was today in miami. he just started opening florida offices a week ago including in lakeland and tampa. and he picked up a key endorsement from his former competition, carly fiorina. he is arguing a vote for rubio next tuesday is a vote for donald trump. the republican national committee filed a suit to release e-mails belonging to hillary clinton's aides while she was there. they want it released by july 1st, before the democratic convention. in the complaint, the rnc says in part clinton's actions while secretary of state are manifestly relevant to whether she is fit to lead this country. on the democratic side though, the left side of your

no choice but to share the road with motorists. 14-year-old savannah zimmerman is finding comfort in her father's arms. the one person she had an unbreakable bond with is now gone, her sister caitlyn. >> she meant so much to me. we did so much together. >> reporter: caitlyn's organs are donated tuesday night. family by her side as doctors took her off the ventilator and pronounced her dead. >> i told her good-bye. >> reporter: the inverness middle schooler had gone on a ride with her 13-year-old brother dylan. dylan had a flat tire so caitlyn told dylan he could ride her back and she jumped on the back pegs. >> she was always giving. >> reporter: the driver of an suv hit them, throwing them off of the bike in the middle of independence highway.

the driver, 40-year-old brandon wooder was drunk. >> he took one of my kids. >> reporter: savannah didn't see the crash but says her connection to her sister was so strong that she felt something. >> i had a bad feeling. i never had that feeling before. >> reporter: caitlyn and dylan were flown to the hospital in gainesville. dylan is there in the pediatric icu in critical condition. he's had surgeries on head, neck, spine and spleen. the 6th grader hasn't woken up yet. when he does, he will learn the heart breaking news, that one of his big sisters is gone. >> it's going to be hard. >> reporter: wooder is now facing dui charges in. the wake of the death, it's likely the charges will be up. so far no funeral arrangements have been made and the focus

in inverness for the now tampa bay, i'm jack in-- jacqueline ingles. >> people are texting and walking more, doing this thing right now, not paying attention. many not getting in the crosswalk and paying attention to what is going on. according to the report, the group estimates the number of people dying on the street increased by 10% last year. that's the largest year to year increase since 1975. and florida had the second highest number of pedestrian deaths only behind california last year. there is good news here. we're actually lower than what you would compare it to the first six months of 2014 to 2015. we had 11 fewer deaths, a 4% decrease. so what is different now? well, as we said earlier, the

some people don't even look up when they cross the street or are not in crosswalks. another factor is cheaper gas. more people are on the roads. we also have a greater awareness of our health these days. more people are walking short distances, knowing it's good for them. increasing the number of pedestrians out there. right now there's a contest to rename a stretch of one of our most dangerous highways for pedestrians. for that matter, one of the most dangerous in the country, us-19. this is the stretch of us-19 running through pasco county. send your suggestions online until monday march 21st. after the finalists are picked, you can vote again in april. we're going to head back out to the breaking news. that brush fire happening in palm bay. it has now grown to 25 acres. we're hearing four homes have been damaged. thankfully no injuries to report.

reporting there are voluntary evacuations happening. let's take a live look -- actually, i think we're going -- no. what i want to tell you, shay and i were talking about this earlier today. it went from 10 acres to 25 acres in 45 minutes. you're saying the wind out there is pretty bad. >> i just checked the wind reports as well. across a lot of florida and central florida in particular where we're seeing the brush fires, the wind speeds have been gusting to 25 miles per hour in the last hour. that is not good when you're trying to fight a fire. of course it's dry out there. in our area, beautiful because it is so dry and sunny and we have been on the warm side. right now you're looking at a live look out in the apollo beach area. take a look across the state. this is our satellite and radar composite. nice and dry across the state. that would be great except for when you have a brush fire. right? take a look at the heavy rain that is inundating part of our gulf states.

arkansas, mississippi. even into tennessee. this large system has been creating flooding concerns for a lot of that area. it is going to be on the move and it will be headed into our area by the weekend. coming up. but at least for the time being, at least through friday, probably into saturday, we are going to remain perfectly dry and on the warm side. it takes a little while for the the country. so if you are planning on heading out to the valspar championship tomorrow, the weather is looking great for it. starting off at 6:00 when the gates open, 65 degrees. by noon, up to 77. we will top out in the low 80s out in the palm harbor area. but by 6:00, the temperature coming back down to the mid- 70s. that's where we should be for an average high this time of year. with the exception of the winds. they will still be gusting at 10 to 25 miles per hour. at least for the evening

insurance but still are having a hard time paying your bills. that's the reality according to a new poll by harvard school of public health. it also suggests four out of ten people have spent all or most of their personal savings on health care costs in the last two years. in a separate study, the kaiser family foundation finding companies are shifting those costs to their employees. concluding that just having health insurance these days is not enough. the next step is making sure that people don't go broke when they get six. one in five children in the united states living in poverty. now the american academy of pediatrics wants to start assessing kids for that. >> reporter: it's hard to wrap our heads around a figure so large. >> more than half of our kids in the u.s. live near poverty.

lose their jobs. >> reporter: things like a death in the family or a loss of a second income. >> you may be able to blame your dna for not making more money at your job. short men and overweight women could have it the worst. that's aaccording to -- according to a new study. they looked at genes to come up with this. factors such as income and nutrition wouldn't impact the results. the man three inches shorter than a man would make $1,600 less a year. height doesn't impact professional success for women though but their weight does. researchers finding a woman who is about 14 pounds heavier than average would make around $1,600 less a year. they aren't sure exactly why this is. this doesn't mean that your fate is sealed if these are your body types. they hope this prompts more scientists to look into workplace discrimination.
