>> special election coverage tonight at 7:00. >> right now, it's our primary day here in florida. three hours left for you to get out and vote. everyone. i'm laura harris. >> and i'm ashley glass. we have breaking election news to get to. orange county in the orlando area is asking the governor to keep the polls open an extra hour, until 8:00, because they're reporting a shortage of ballots there. abc station reporting that they had 53 precincts without enough ballots. >> no response from the governor's office yet but this speaks to the high turnout we're already seeing. it's not only florida.

we will get to florida and ohio in a little bit. those are the ones to watch tonight and could be in a key turning point in the presidential race. >> but first we want to show you the polls. we are not seeing long lines in the tampa bay area. we have been keeping track all day long. 35% of registered voters in pinellas have already cast their ballot either today, by mail or by early voting. in hillsborough county, more than 30% of registered voters have already cast their ballots. republicans outnumbered democrats in both counties. the big take-away here, the polls should not be crowded. the ballots are simple. it only took five minutes to vote. time. >> nicole grigg has been talking to people who decided to vote on this day.

palm beach. >> reporter: good evening. we are inside. this is donald trump's private club in palm beach. you can see we're actually in the ball room. this ball room is actually named after trump. now, trump is expected to have a media conference here around 9:00 p.m. you can see not only all the chairs, but two are left over here. my photographer is going to show you all of the media setting up here. now, a couple of interesting things. a new york times reports that received has received $1.9 billion in free advertising due to intense media coverage and violence at rallies a sheriff says that he will not press charges against trump in connection with an attack at a rally. there is not enough evidence to charge trump with insighting

right now we're going to send it over to ryan raiche who is with the marco rubio camp. >> reporter: i'm standing outside fui arena. in a short time the doors will open for the big event. it starts at 7:00. he is calling it a celebration event. earlier today we were in west miami at rubio headquarters where dozens of volunteers were hard at work getting out the vote. dozens more were in the field in miami-dade county. this is a huge county for rubio. he needs a come from behind win. they're very upbeat and energized on election day even though the polls are not in rubio's favor. the folks say they have enough support to win his home state. >> some other polls put him in second and third. some put him in first. i'm going to work my hardest because i know that marco is the best candidate that we have. >> reporter: we're going to head in there in a few moments. the volunteers by the way are

until the polls close to try to get as much turn-out as possible at the polls. we will have live coverage throughout the night at the marco rubio camp in miami. >> reporter: lauren rozyla in west palm beach where hillary clinton is expected to be at the convention center later tonight. you can see all of the setup happening behind me as they anticipate her arrival. she spent the day in north carolina. you can see here at a polling location working to connect with voters on this critical super tuesday. when clinton flies into florida, she is expected to talk about her economic plan to income. she is also address continued race relation problems and how far america has to go to improve relationships between police and the community. this comes just days after reported violent clashes between donald trump protesters and supporters outside in chicago. >> i think it's important that we really do focus on the very

traffic. as you can imagine, so many people need that transit system to get around the city. also happening right now, a week before president obama's historic visit to cuba, the white house is announcing changes to make it easier to travel and do business there. that includes going to cuba for educational purposes and for american banks to offer services as well. the changes mean that cubans can get jobs in the united states. in next week president obama will be the first sitting prosecutors to visit cuba in almost 90 years. the u.s. reestablished relations with cuba last year. and by the way, i'll be following the president's trip to cuba. look for those special reports coming up on the now next week. well, nearly 20 years after her death, mother teresa is going to become a saint. today pope francis signed a decree. it will be on september 4th. three months ago the pope

attributed to mother teresa, clearing the way for her to be declared a saint: she received the nobel peace prize in 1979 and she died in 1997. back here. a lot of people are heading to the polls. will they get rained on. >> no. and i don't think fog will be an issue with the exception of maybe along the immediate coastline. otherwise it won't be a problem at all. in fact if you look outside, we're right back in the mid-80s today. that is east of i-75. if you live along the coast and as beautiful as it is right there, they are still socked in along the sky way. the sky way is open but the fog which lifts throughout the morning and afternoon is going to go right back down again overnight. that means we will very likely have more closures tomorrow morning with dense fog advisories needed.

upper 80s across a good portion of our interior counties. back to sebring. low to mid 80s from downtown over to lutz. look at the coastline. check that out. 75 in sarasota. 70 in long boat key. mid 70s along the coast. yes, it's the sea breeze. yes, it's the cooler water. but it's the fog too. i mean, it takes a lot longer for it to burn off or lift, so it takes longer for the temperatures to go up. here is a look at the satellite picture. we were socked in first thing this morning. and we are going to be again tomorrow morning. in fact, even later tonight, we start to show that fog. and i showed you this yesterday. and this is pretty much -- that shows you how dense the fog is. see the green here? usually you see that on futurecast and you say that's rain. it isn't. it's that the fog is so thick in these area that's we're looking at the possibility of what looks to be showers on radar. we even had folks say they had

>> avon is getting rid of 2500 jobs. it was in new york. now the direct-selling company is going to great britain. it will keep some facilities up and running here. it will save them $50 million this year. 65 to 70 million every year after that. a lot of people sell avon door to door but the company hasn't exactly announced which jobs will actually be cut. and while they're cutting jobs, ride sharing service lift is hoping they can find a bunch of new drivers through a new program called express drive. lift and chevy partnering to provide rental chevies for lift drivers. we're talking 99 bucks or 20 cents ai mile for drivers who complete 40 rides or more a week. those that complete 65 or more a week get free rentals. this will ensure more people can actually drive if they want

we're talking about cars here. check this out. six tiny robots. that's what you're looking at, pulling a car 20,000 times their collective weights. they weigh two-tenths of a pound. the car weighs two tons. they take their cues from ants who can lift objects much larger than themselves. this would be the same as six people trying to move the eiffel tower or three statue of liberties. the nfl is acknowledging the link between football and brain disease. in the past they said that football can cause concussions and they are dangerous but they have never acknowledged the direct link until now. >> certainly the research shows that a number of retired nfl cte. the answer to the question is certainly yes.

vice president for health and safety policy. his comments coming during a house discussion. they say the executive made an additional point that a lot more questions need to be answered. so critics say this could be a big changer in a big settlement. it would only pay for prior deaths involving cte. but there's a challenge in federal appeals court to make the nfl pay for future cases as well. now, today a lawyer is urging the court to expand the settlement based on the executive's comments. with all of that, the group at boston university leading the research on cte has diagnosed it so far in more than 170 former athletes. it has shown up in 90 out of 94. the disease can only be diagnosed after death. we have a lot more election

in 20 minutes where it's a bigger grab and voting is underway right now. and this is also developing. we want to share this with you. a few florida primary related pieces of information we are learning. miami harold saying donald trump's campaign registered 46 poll watchers in southern florida. that is people standing in the voter areas monitoring what is happening. it turns out that he is the only candidate doing so. marco rubio says even if he loses here in florida he plans to campaign in utah. our ryan raiche is at rubio's event in miami where the candidate will be watching the primary results from that area. there's only a small area for the media. that is what he is experiencing. as it turns out, the event is not inside the actual arena, it's in the lobby. going to breaking news that we have been telling you about.

entire metro system will shut down at midnight. this is a main artery, a main thoroughfare that they use to get around. here is what we're watching from the "washington post." hours. all of this for safety checks of the electrical cables. three metro officials are saying that right now. they're supposed to be holding a press conference any moment. 4:30. the decision was made by the board of directors and the general manager there. all of them having a telephone afternoon. they claim all of this is for safety checks. we're still trying to get a little more information on this. but, again, the entire metro system in washington, d.c. shutting down for 29 hours starting tonight at midnight. also today, a cape coral police officer is on leave after throwing a woman to the ground. i want you to listen closely to this encounter as you can hear her slamming on to the

>> stop. >> i want you -- >> stop. >> that 23-year-old woman is accused of being drunk, fighting with her boyfriend, stepped in. keys. when he tells her to get a cab. after the officer threw her to the ground, she appears knocked out. couldn't stand up on her own. police are now investigating if this was justifiable use of force or if he went too far. they say that coleson was accidentally shot and killed by one of his fellow officers. one of three brothers started shooting at police while the others recorded on their cell phones. he wanted to commit what is commonly called suicide by cop but ended up surviving. police praised officer coleson

midnight tonight for 29 hours for safety inspections. we will continue to follow this breaking development and bring you the latest as soon as we get it. i want to you check out this crazy bus crash video that we have out of detroit. as a passenger grabs the wheel of that bus. some now calling the driver a hero. but the city fired her. the angry passenger was trying to get off the bus but the woman didn't want to let her. the woman and man were threatening her. before they could get to the police station, the angry passenger grabbed the wheel. >> i'm pulling with all my might. i pulled it back in the seat like this to keep it to the right. my decision as a veteran, that's the smartest thing to do, keep it to the right. if i let her get control, there's going to be civilians dead. >> there were minor injuries from that crash.

>> with you do have breaking news to get to on the now tampa bay. reports out of texas. a police officer was shot. one of two suspects was killed in west forth worth -- fort worth, texas. we're hearing that the officer was taken to the hospital with you're looking at aerial footage here. this is the area where it all went down as police are still searching for another suspect at this very hour. little to go on by way of a description. very much a developing story. we will come back to you with updates.

tampa police are on the scene of a deadly shooting. the man heard someone breaking into the house so he grabbed a gun. he shot the would-be robber kitchen. the man who lives there has yet to be charged in this shooting. also on the election front, we have talked a lot about florida but ohio just as important. they're governor, john kasich, is neck and neck with donald trump. todd what happens there in ohio could really have an impact in nationwide. >> reporter: yeah, laura and ashley, that's right. ohioans seem to realize that. the polls place that we spent time at are concerned about the direction of the country but also the direction of the race. office.

>> reporter: mike o'malley has seen the impact of politics in ohio. voters here in brook park just outside of cleveland have shown up in big numbers and republicans have to choose between their governor john kasich. >> he is the most respectable person running for our president. >> reporter: and the man with a message that appeals to the many former auto workers here. >> i'm sick of politicians. he's not a politician. >> it resinates here more than other parts of the country. >> reporter: ohioans feel this one is different. >> there's a lot of people running that you wonder how and why they made it this far. >> reporter: some came with ballots in hand. others hoped the luck of the irish would give their governor an edge. >> trump needs to realize that he is not king trump.

>> he is saying what definitely people want to say. but it's not always politically correct. yeah, he has done stupid things but we all have. >> reporter: mike o'malley may not be running for the biggest office but he is in the middle of the biggest election. >> you would suspect that perhaps there's a trump factor there. >> reporter: and if donald trump does win here in ohio and all of the other states that he is expected to pick up tonight, he could be unstoppable in the delegate count. but in john kasich wins, then number of the republicans may get the number required to secure the nomination before they head to the convention which is back here in cleveland in july where we could see a chaotic brokered convention. the polls close at 7:30 here at baldwin wallace university. this is where governor kasich will be holding his watch party. that begins around 8:00. he hopes that he will be giving a victory speech. ashley.

voter turnout in florida. it is good. how is voter turnout in ohio, given how close it is on the republican side there? >> reporter: right here, they are seeing higher turnout, busier polls in the outlying suburb areas, which tends to be more republican. the republican race may be drawing more people out. i'm todd walker for the now tampa bay. >> todd, thank you. you might not know this, but the now airs in cities across the country, including cleveland. one of our reporters there has spent years getting confused. i'll explain why. take a look here. can you tell? get a little closer. can you tell?

they look like alike but no relation. john is covering the campaign. while people in cleveland are used to the difference, others around the nation are starting to notice there are similarities. ashley. >> i'm here with dr. susan mcmanis, a long time analyst for abc action news and the now tampa bay. thank you for being here. we're already seeing huge voter turnout here in florida. could break the 2008 record where we saw 42% of floridians turn out to vote. why are we seeing such a big voter turnout. >> have you ever seen a year like this? people have been upset about the direction that the country is in. polls have shown two-thirds of the country don't like the direction of the country. that's true for both sides of the aisle. you have exciting new faces in politics. people to not want politics as usual. when you have so many candidates it's like going into

ten flavors on one side and two on the other. >> great analogy that made my mouth water. why are so many candidates in tampa today. >> tampa is still the must-have part of florida. 25% of all florida voters live in the tampa market. it's the most competitive. it also has a lot of swing voters. people here are very interested in politics. it also is quite diverse in terms of the racial and age makeup which makes it the microcasm of florida. >> you're seeing international media outlets not only in why is that. >> again, this election is a mystery to the entire world. and what better place to be than the epicenter of politics which is right here in tampa. some of the same groups that are coming here had a good experience when they came and

most importantly what draws people back is just this is the power house part of florida's politics. >> it is. if trump wins florida by some accounts that could happen, what does tomorrow look like for marco rubio and the rest of the republican field. >> it depends how much marco rubio might lose by. if he gets blown out by 20 points, that's a different matter than if he comes close and that becomes a surprise of the day. but, you know, if he were to lose, losing an election is all about how you lose it, how gracious you are, how optimistic you are about the future, how you thank people who helped you. if your top gets nasty, you have lost people. >> we will be talking with susan mcmanis all night long on air as the results roll in. susan, we will be back with you soon. there is still time on the clock to vote. denis and laura, how is the weather looking for people heading out to vote. >> that's what i was going to ask. a lot of people wondering if it

>> there is still the chance of fog rolling in the early hours. most of it will be after the polls close. right now there's a little bit of fog along the sky way. it's beautiful in the rest of the area. we had a foggy start across much of the area. sea fog. that's what it is. it is pushing inland. that means coastal areas were socked in most of the morning and part of the afternoon. if you live east of i-75, you're saying what fog. a beautiful summer-like day with temperatures well into the 80s. even plant city right now checking in at 86 degrees. the satellite picture, the fog came in off the gulf. it will again tonight. and it will again be an issue first thing tomorrow morning. in fact by 8:00 we're going to be seeing some of our coastal areas having limited visibility. then by the time you roll into the overnight hours, the fog gets thick. just like it did this morning. that means that visibility will be a big issue, especially if you live anywhere near the coast.

most everyone is going to have the issue with fog and a dense fog advisory is a very good beta cross most of the area first thing tomorrow morning. here you go. hour by hour, partly cloudy skies tonight, becoming foggy overnight. it will be a mild night with temperatures in the low 70s. then there's rain on the way. it arrives later friday and into the weekend. we will talk about that coming up at the top of the hour. today marks the fifth anniversary of the civil war ripping apart syria leading to the refugee crisis in europe. it's estimated half a million of people have died in the war, another 2 million hurt. 5million people have fled the country to safety. today russia began taking its forces out of syria. its airstrikes have been at the heart of the debate. the u.s. and their allies claiming they targeted rebels. peace talks are underway and a ceasefire that took effect two weeks ago seems to be having some impact.

says that's reducing the violence by about 80 or 90%. actress angelina jolie speaking in the rain today in lebanon. the actress and envoy says the international community must address the root causes of the refugee crisis. she hoped to help victims return to their homes but obviously that's not the case. back here in the states, lots of finger-pointing still happening about who is to blame for the flint river water crisis in michigan. >> the water there is still not safe to drink. well, today two former flint leaders who refused to testify at a hearing last month answered questioned for the first -- questions for the first time. one believes he has been unjustly persecuted. >> smeared professionally and personally in the media and by

representatives and a misinformed public. >> did anybody at the epa do anything wrong. >> i don't think anybody at epa did anything wrong but i believe we could have done more. >> the former epa administrator says the problem should never have happened in the first place and the epa had nothing to do with that. she says the pipes are being recoated now and the water may soon be safe to drink again. today flint's former mayor called out the governor for discounting local concerns and not acting with any urgency. the governor is expected to testify for the first time on thursday. well, this is the iconic bee on the cheerio boxes. >> he is my guy. i liked him. general mills is getting rid of it in canada temporarily at least to draw attention to all of the bees dying. we have been following the issue on the now for you. new research showing what may be part of the problem. it found low exposure to pesticides impacts how bees learn.

>> we start closer to home. michael is live at clearwater country side library. michael, voters have just two more hours left to get out the vote. how is the line where you are. >> reporter: you can expect a lot of people getting off of work. the line is not too bad. a steady line of voters coming in today. so far so good in pinellas county. that has not been the case in other parts of the state. 52 precincts had ballot shortages and. election officials asked the governor to extend their voting times from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. but as we mentioned, not here in pinellas county. turnout here has been good and steady and of course they have plenty of supplies here at the clearwater country side public library. people have been coming in and out all day. with two hours before the polls close, this is the time that it will start to pick up a lot. there haven't been a lot of issues and that is good. some people had registered as independent. that meant that they couldn't vote so they were upset about that.
