they say he fired a shot at them hitting one officer's riot shield. >> this started after a woman called 911 about a domestic disturbance. abc action news reporter corey dierdorff has the update. >> reporter: first off, we're very lucky. no officers were injured during the whole ordeal. the neighborhood is still shut down. you can see the 3300 block of west cherokee here in tampa. crime scene investigators are looking over evidence. we've seen detectives going door-to-door asking if anybody had heard anything. it all started about 1:10 this morning where a woman inside of avenue called 911. officers rushed to the scene and were met by an armed man in the doorway of the house. that man pointed a gun at the first arriving officers before going back into the house.

tpd officers tried to get him to surrender for 45 minutes pep came back, raised a gun and shields dead center. tpd spokesperson says the officers are lucky to be alive. >> i don't know why the gentleman pulled out the gun and fired, but he did, and luckily, the shield was there and the officers responded as they are trained to do, which is when somebody fires upon you, you have to respond with force. >> reporter: those officers will remain on routine investigation unfolds. they speak with people here in the neighborhood and put all of the pieces together to answer still has. live in tampa this morning, corey dierdorff, abc action news. happening right now. a dive team is back out on the water searching lake thonotosassa after jumping off of his pontoon boat. the crews were out there last old. friends say he was on a boat

the water to grab a pool noodle. they say he panicked as he swam and never resurfaced. the search. we'll let you know as soon as we get new information. tampa police say two juveniles are under arrest after crashing a stolen car into a silver springs home. officers tried pulling over the driver, but the driver took off, crashed into a fence and into a house on mulberry street. tampa fire and rescue crews say the home is structurally sound. this morning, police are on the trail of a serial arsonist. surveillance cameras caught the photo of the suspect. police tell us the suspect started at least five fires in the last two months in a six- block area of the lake crescent neighborhood. detectives are warning neighbors to be on the lookout. good morning. it is oh, after 9:00 here. i don't know about you, but i'm sick of this fog situation.

three days that we closed the sky way as a result of the fog. that will continue for the next couple of hours. the it 'em chores right now are patchy, but where it has formed is right along the water. you've had to do lots of loops around. 50s and 07s by the afternoon and climbing into the low 08s. we have rainfall to contend with. on the backside of this, not only are we getting rid of the fog, we'll get rid of the warm and muggies. we'll have the details of the cooler weather to see if janelle has been able to open up the sky way. >> i do not have the power, but you know, we have been watching troopers drive back and forth across the bridge. that's how they check it out to see if it's safe to drive. they are saying it's still not

the sunshine sky way is still closed. you have a couple of options here. you under pinellas county and cut through tampa through 275 to get onto i-75 to head south. you can take the gandy across and get on the leroy expressway. a little bit of congestion once you get off the bridge into tampa. as you head east, it looks good on the expressway. a little slow westbound for those folks trying to get back on the bridge if they are headed over to pinellas county. taking i-75 from the south heading north, all in the green so it's a smooth ride. it's going to be a long one. about 30 minutes to get from 275 to i-4. fans of frank sinatra, jr. are remembering him after his sudden passing yesterday. he was set to perform tonight at the mahaffey theater in st. pete. he went into cardiac arrest while on tour and died. some of you are sharing your favorite songs on our facebook

[music] [music] >> frank sinatra, jr. followed his father into the music industry. he worked as his dad's musical director and conductor before becoming a singer in his own right. when he was 19, he was kidnapped and held for ransom for two days. the staff at the theater has a message posted on its web site expressing sympathy. information on ticket refunds is also available on that site. turning now to the race for the white house. a warning today from donald trump thanks to a boost from his win here in florida. he is the only candidate that can clinch the gop nomination without going to a split. he's calling for the republicans to support him.

pay for a drink when she started possibling and had a glazed look on her face. the clerk pulled her from her mom's arms just before the woman fell over. police say both mom and baby are fine today. this morning, an arkansas hospital is reopening its operating rooms after a deadly brain disease forced them to close for more than a day. crews spent last night fayetteville. the hospital discovered yjd in its operating rooms. it's highly unlikely this disease spread to patients. it is always fatal. the hospital replaced its surgical instruments. the doctor says its clinic is seeing a huge uptick in surgeries. the number of procedures scheduled at his appelton practice increases just before march madness begins. the reason? because afterwards, patients are instructed to take it easy for a few days and watching

>> flood waters continue to inundate the south. the midwest is seeing devastating windstorms and tornadoes. take a look at video from louisiana. crews are working to recover dozens of floating caskets that were unearthed with cemeteries flooded. >> and in the west, devastation wasn't from water but from wind. powerful storms whipped through illinois leaving damaged homes and downed trees. in iowa, tornadoes leave people cleaning up the damage after twisters ravaged their communities. and emerging is a symbol of hope in iowa. that wedding dress is believed to be blown many illinois. police hope it will be a get great site to return it to whoever it belongs to. it's a winter hurricane. let's take to you the forecast to show you what's going on.

you can see the swirl over the great lakes. we're talking about winds in excess of 60 miles per hour with blowing snow and out ahead of it, we have the torrential rain and severe weather. of course farther south, we've been talking floods. it's farther south we go. this is where the frontal boundary associated with that low is positioned. we stall out and move very slowly. showers and thunderstorms are firing along that line. as it continues sinking farther south, we'll get into that rain. we have rain to get through over the weekend in two rounds. the first will come friday night. for now, we're in good shape save for a couple of showers tomorrow. the additional moisture would be about it. as we head friday night into saturday night into sunday morning as this low continues to push in money we'll be able

all of that will get through here. by the time we get that monday morning, we will be into the clear air and into much cooler temperatures. issues so far have been the patchy fog. we have quarter mile visibility. the sky way will be up in a few minutes to let you know the status on that. widening out the shots. no significant change across the peninsula. let's see this, and that air mass is coming our way as we get ready for much cooler temperatures sunday into monday behind that secondary front that pushes through. we'll say good-bye to the 80s for now. low to mid-08s and cooler with the wind off the water and along the coast with the fresh.

now at 9:30, one man is dead after a confrontation with tampa police. a call that brought the suspect face-to-face with officers and what they say he did that left them with no choice but to shoot. >> five teens arrested in this parking lot, accused of robbing about a half dozen women across tampa bay. the way police finally caught up with them. >> and the fight for rambo. this morning, the argument one lakewood woman is making to officials in hopes of keeping her beloved pet alligator. good morning and thank you for joining us on this

officers moved in on the lot custody. only one is over the age of 18. eagle lake. 16. this group stole purses from at least six different women. the police joined forces from all over the area. the m.o., one suspect asks for directions, gets close to the woman and snatches her purse. tuesday, a woman fell to the ground and smashed her wrist. another is scared to shop alone now. >> i'm afraid. i'm afraid in the public. i don't know who to trust. i don't know who is approaching

something to cause me harm. i'm afraid. >> reporter: we know this jeep was stolen back on march 9th. one 17-year-old who has the keys and is being charged with grand theft of a motor vehicle. they are all from lakeland. i spoke with winter haven police and they said they are trying to close their case. that's what more than half a dozen other agencies will be doing as well. ashley knorr, abc action news. police say there was a fight that broke out on north 5th street and that fight turned violent. the victim in this case is expected to survive. officers have not released a suspect description. this morning, highway patrol is investigating why a truck driver lost control and into a

on a deadly rampage n. is suing uber. adultton is claiming that working for uber caused psychological damage. he says he went on a shooting free killing several and injures others while working for uber. a lakeland woman who was fighting to keep her beloved pet alligator, i posted that on my facebook page yesterday. it was shared almost 200,000 times. we're checking in with mary today. we're checking to see if she's going to be allowed to keep rambo. mary thorne rescued rambo 11 years ago. now the trained docile reptile has outgrown its current home according to an ordinance. they told mary because rambo is now 6 feet long, he is required to live on a minimum of 2 acres, which mary doesn't have. mary says the rule didn't exist when she was originally licensed to keep rambo. she doesn't know what she would

new video this morning of a california high school math teacher looking at lingerie online as the students were taking a test. what the teacher didn't know was that his computer was still connected to a projector and on the big screen for all of the students to see. several students recorded video of the incident with their cell phones and posted it online. this incident happened last week, but parents were just notified this week. >> if he can't control his web surfing for lingerie around impressionable teenagers, even if he hadn't had the projector on, what if one of the students had a question and walked up and saw that on the screen. >> the principal says the teacher is on administrative leave and could be fired investigation. police are looking for the man caught putting a skimming

we have an update right now to breaking news. we have learned the name of the man shot and killed by tampa police earlier this morning. police say 54-year-old sonny chen shot at police outside of his home on cherokee avenue morning. that's when officers fired back killing chen. sold.
