campaign trail today. he's heading to detroit for a luncheon with a nonprofit nonpartisan group that focuses on business, government and social issues. a group of people do plan to protest though while he's in town. they are building a human wall. we're hearing from the teen who rescued a 71-year-old man who drove into a pond in palm harbor. that teen, part of a family of five driving on highlands boulevard to sunday dinner at a relative's house. they rounded a corner and they say they heard a loud splash. they got closer to a sinking in the water. 17-year-old jordon litowchak in the car passing by told his mom to stop and he got out. when he saw someone in the driver's seat of that car he dove in to rescue him. >> i had adrenaline going but i have h to save this man. he was e -- i had to save this man. i am grateful i could do. that i don't want -- any like

thing. i'm glad i could do it for him. >> another person passing by happened to be a nurse and stopped to help. she stayed on scene until paramedics arrived. the florida highway patrol says the driver, daniel vinovich of holiday is doing all right. he lost control of that car apparently when he had severe muscle spasms in his back and neck but wasn't seriously hurt. a wrong-way driver is fighting to survive in polk county after deputies say he collided with a semi. the impa randall jackson was flown to lakeland regional hospital, in critical condition now. in pinellas county st. petersburg police say a driver lost control and crashed into a tree. this accident on 54th avenue north shut down the road for hours after it happened yesterday just before 11:00. 7 a-year-old thomas shay died -- 75-year-old thomas shea died. witnesses say they saw the car

in hillsborough county another car crashes into a tree in tampa. this happened on fowler avenue over the weekend. police say the driver lost control while on the curve of the i-75 entrance ramp. 13 people out of their homes now after a fire destroys four apartments in temple terrace. that building is across the street from king high school. crews say a stove left on in one unit is to blame for all the damage there. that fire did spread to an apartment next door before firefighters got it under control. two nearby apartments also have for injuries, they are both expected to be ok. the red cross though is stepping in now to help with temporary housing. a crystal river shopping plaza is heavily damaged after a fire on saturday. citrus county firefighters are still looking into what caused it. they closed down part of u.s. 19 while putting out the blaze. we're still waiting to hear if there were injuries or how much damage that fire caused. what started as a 30-acre brush fire has now quickly burned more than two square

san bernardino county. officials are calling this the pilot fire. right now about 400 firefighters are trying to get it under control. this wildfire sparked sunday afternoon in a national forest forcing evacuations. officials say 20 mile-per-hour winds are pushing smoke toward the mojave desert and worried air quality may drop to dangerous levels. they are still trying to find out what caused it. we turn to the latest on zika. florida officials say the number of homegrown cases has now increased to 16. righno concentrated north of miami. health officials fanned out in the community administering more than 2,400 tests to people in the area. they are trying to see how widespread this virus is. police officers are also handing out zika information pamphlets to tourists and encouraging people to use bug repellent. the white house and congress have been engaged in a fierce partisan battle over $1.9

welcome back on this abc on this early monday morning. back to school for a lot of checking back in. 5:12. a live look at the howard frankland bridge, this is the approach looking towards the east. st. pete side, traffic is moving well. 79 in tampa. details on traffic and weather together in a moment. we're following this breaking news now -- delta airlines saying all its flights are grounded now due to a systemwide outage. there's no word on how serious the outage is or if there's an estimate on how long the problem would last.

seeing pockets of moderate to heavier rainfall. nothing torrential at this hour. further to the north is where the steadiest and heaviest rainfall has been falling. it hasn't moved much. however it's position is important. because otherwise we would have been in this pocket of 15 to 20- inch rainfall tallies, according to the doppler radar, just to the west. if hit the brakes along the coast along the coast. the issue is again we have saturated cells to the north. this is where we have the potential for flooding. these are not warnings, these are watches as conditions are favorable for flooding because of the additional rainfall that is coming in. again anywhere from 3 to as much as 6 inches especially along the coast, a little less as you head inland. the rest of us, just a murky day. pockets of moderate to heavy

caution. hillsborough county dry now, 275 at busch just five minutes to get to downtown. your drive on i-4 heading to downtown tampa looking great so far, 22 minutes from county line road to downtown. and down there at the bottom just seven minutes to get from 75 to 275. 5:17. a new project is in the works to ease traffic and increase safety at the williams road and mlk boulevard intersection just east of i-75 and hillsborough county. the plan is to add lanes northbound and southbound. traffic dividers, pavement widening and safety features for people walking or biking and a new traffic signal system are also being added. there's a chance for to you get new details about the construction plans and also give your comments to public works officials. there's a meeting tonight at 6:00 at the seffner mango public library community room

since june 6th, we've found six dead cats on the side of the road on the howard frankland bridge. someone maying tossing them out of car windows. >> a woman driving yesterday said she saw a small black and white ball of fur running toward her. she tried to get it and it ran into her wheel well. >> i thought how am i going to get the cat? >> she has mark on her face for when she probably hit pavement. >> troopers and fdot arrived to take off the wheel and save the kitten. now the family is going to keep the cat. police are still trying to determine how the other cats found got on the bridge. still ahead -- the 10-year- old son of a kansas state lawmaker is killed on a water slide over the weekend. what is happening today out there at the scene as the investigation into what went wrong now gets underway. plus, new information on the deadliest hot air balloon crash in u.s. history. investigators explain what

160-foot tall water slide. it's the largest water slide in the world. riders must be 54 inches tall and -- a lengthy warning there. riders can reach speeds of 06 miles per hour. the schlitterbahn water park says given safety is our first priority we have closed our kansas city park and closed the ride pending a full investigation. we have an update on the deadliest in u.s. history. investigators now believe the pilot was trying to descend through a break in the clouds near austin, texas but unfortunately he didn't notice some power lines. the balloon hit those wires before catching fire and crashing killing all 16 people on board. we're trafficking heavy downpours that continue to move in off the gulf. flood watches are in effect now from citrus county, hernando county, pasco counties. i'll let you know how much rainfall to expect the next

look at all that. , that is the rain hugging the coastline as you wake one abc action news. >> ivan is watching a few areas in particular very closely now. pasco, citrus and hernando counties. he's in the weather center now tracking the rain throughout the day so we're prepared. >> looks like the metro area in the clear for now but it's not going to last. >> we're all rainfall the next couple of days. the problem is it's where the rain is heaviest is where the flooding will be. and we have flood watches in effect. you can see this wall of water about to move onshore. it will be a wet go through the morning commute. no lightning here but the issue will be blinding rain and reduced visibility. already impacting 19 from crystal river, vine island, spring hill getting in on it

richey. pinellas is drying out but further south manatee getting in on rainfall along 75 and points east are beginning to dry to the west here. we're going to see the heaviest rain to the north and that is where accumulations of another six inches is possible so. we had a half-foot already, more in some areas here. that will combine to produce upperwards of a foot since last friday. that is where we have watches that are in effect from sits to -- citrus county to hernando county to pasco. there will be rain from st. pete to the south, just not as steady and heavy and we've not had that much rain since last friday so we can handle it better to the south. temperatures by the way, that is one bonus, we've been seeing temperatures stuck in the low 80s. certainly unusual for this time of year but when you get cloud cover and rainfall, that doesn't let up, that what is happens. so far this morning, heaviest
