while they are waiting at the bus stop. that tip just came in from hillsborough county sheriff's deputies. it's a good reminder to let the kids know. might want to leave early, a lot more school buses and cars are on the road. we have a situation in pinellas park, railroad crossing arm is stuck down and it's causing a -- pretty big problems here. 62nd avenue is blocked now at 49th street north. seeing some delays here. you might want to try to take park boulevard or even 54th avenue this. hopefully they will have this fixed. csx crews are actually on their way working to get that arm in the upright position so that cars can go by. we'll watch it and let you know as soon as this opens here and of course on twitter @tampabaytraffic. a lot of folks are up early now getting a very early start. you don't want to be late for the first day of school. >> my brother and i waited for the second week of the school year for that to happen when we

it's back to school for a number of districts. >> we have team coverage to kick off the school year. our lauren rozyla is standing by with a first look at all new renovations at one pinellas county school. >> first hillsborough county with ryan smith on how one of the largest school districts in the country is preparing for this. ryan, good morning. >> good morning. so much to look forward to on this first day of school for so main students at book -- many students at washington, we expected more than 500 students to walk through the front doors in one hour. and staff prepared for a turnaround year. that comes with fresh leadership. this marks principal jaime girding's first year in the school. she's been in the district many years now but says the biggest barrier for this year is fighting the misconception of working at a "failing school."

ferguson, missouri, overnight. a few dozen protesters gathered to mark the second anniversary of michael brown's death. the car speeding down a busy street struck one of the protesters who had walked into the middle of the road. the man hit so hard reportedly flew into the air and had his shoes knocked off. witnesses say several protesters then pulled out guns and began chasing and firing at the female driver. officers say the woman is now cooperating with them and they believe she didn't see the protester in the street and didn't mean to hit him. it's not known how bad the protester's injuries are morning. police don't believe anyone else was hit in the gunfire. we've got a crime alert. police say a man may be involved in a burglary spree in south tampa hitting more than 20 homes. investigators say this is who they are looking for, they are hoping this surveillance from the latest break-in could help them crack this case. they want to know if you recognize this guy. they say he may be working with two others. the break-in spree has been going on since march. if you know who he is call

this as a tragic accident. a live look outside the police department here where the investigation is underway. police say the scenario in which she was killed is used to demonstrate the decisionmaking process to use lethal force in role play. mary knowlton was a librarian with the scott county public library and also known to be very active in the abc action news reporter rodney dunigan is live in punta gorda this morning and will have a live update later this hour. after the rain you've seen recently you may have pulled out your insurance policy to see if you have flood coverage. in pasco county we've seen overflowing streets, street flooding from ponds. we talked to the director of emergency service that's says most of the people that filed claims last year did not have flood coverage. according to the insurance information institute

homeowners have flood insurance. they strongly encourage everyone living in florida to get it. there's a way to find out how at risk your home is, go to floodsmart.gov. that site will also show you how much you'll pay for flood insurance. most of us are under the influence of this last low so you could get flooding from any stalled system. we had that of course last august with the front. and then recently with the area of low pressure that didn't want to move, at this point slowly inching towards the west, look at the chunk drier air here, we're now beginning to see this low loosening its grip but the heavy rain by the way continues to the north. for us it's going to be a much drier pattern ahead. transitioning into afternoon summer thunderstorms, typical for this time of year. that residual tropical moisture still going to crank out 50% to 60% as far as the storms but they will be in the afternoon as opposed to the steady heavy rain. as the low heads west towards

typical pattern. more sunshine and back to upper 80s to around 90. yesterday we had a high of 81. day before that low 80s. atypical for this time of year. of course you can only do that this time of year with rainfall. in hurricane development expected in the next five days. that is good news. the low itself that parks itself, we're monitoring that for tropical development. it could have been a depression, it was not but gave us a rainfall that 50% to 60% through the end of the week. then back to 40% coverage for the weekend. so the weekend looks fantastic saturday and sunday with plenty of sunshine. so we're back to school today. it's a short week. only three days to ease the kids in. >> you know how nervous you used to get first day of school? >> the earliest time i got up was 5:30. >> wow. the school buses, they are leaving. they are heading out there, corey dierdorff has been parked out of the bus depot in largo

special. the baby was born in the toilet. andrea and joshua whalen went to the hospital early monday morning when andrea went into labor. they waited for the normal natural labor to progress joshua helped his wife get up to go to the bathroom. that is when the couple got a surprise, the baby was born right there in the toilet. dad grabbed the baby girl out, doctors and nurses rushed in to help. she gave birth to an 8 pound 3 ounce baby girl, with mom and baby >> what? >> that is something else. all right, we're looking dry out there there morning. with mostly clear skies and temperatures in the mid and upper 70s. titan doppler radar looking much better and dry at this point. you're not going to need the umbrellas yet but by later this afternoon temperature approaching 90, so nice and warm but we'll have about 50% coverage of storms. we'll talk more about that in detail coming up at the bottom of the hour.

here on this first day of school. at booker t washington elementary school. 550 students already enrolled for the school year but officials say it's typical for a lot of parents here to sign up their children on the first day. booker t washington expecting even more students in attendance after the first bell. the new principal this year telling us partnering with parents is key in turning around the f-grade school. they've started some pretty clever ways to do that includinaf for parents and students to take part in like couponing and gardening. but jaime girding says it starts with school pride, the new principal says embracing its roots as an historic landmark in the community is also key. >> i want the kids to be able to know all about that history. i want them to feel part of the pride in what the school represents. as booker t washington, the first african-american school

city. we'll be headed there next. here's ivan with the forecast. we're going to see more sunshine today than we've seen in quite some time. along with that, how about that, not raining at this hour. in fact the torrents of rain with us the last couple of days are gone at this point. just off-shore showers so we're in pretty good shape. we're going to continue to see some rainfall, just it will fall when it typically normally does this time of year, in the afternoon. that area of low pressure continues to move away the one that was stalled pretty mu all the moisture in, that is beginning to move away. that is certainly excellent news. still residual tropical moisture so the thunderstorms that do fire today and we'll see some. we'll have potential to bring down good downpours through the afternoon and into the evening as everything pushes back west. that will continue to be the case as he head through tomorrow. look at this, with the sunshine that we'll have, temperatures approaching 90 degrees, we'll have some low 90s here so unlike yesterday we're not going to be stuck in the low 80s. coverage as far as the rainfall

dangerous water. that is according to a new study from harvard. researchers finding toxic chemicals in drinking water in 13 states including right here in florida. the tested water sources for industrial chemicals that are linked to cancer and other health problems. california graduate students have come one a way to fight drunk driving, using temporary tattoos to do that. one student wanted to do something to help after her roommate was hit by a drunk driver. so she and several other students at uc started working on an idea. they came up with these temporary tattoos, they have a chip in them that measures the blood alcohol level from sweat and then uses bluetooth to send that information to your smartphone. >> i was looking for something that is wearable, easy to wear it but also easy to carry and easy to remove. >> the students say testing sweat is more accurate than testing someone's breath.

it's 6:00. as your morning sprint now counts you down to "good morning, america." >> let's head to abc action news reporter rodney dunigan, we had technical issues earlier. he's live at the accidental shooting in punta gorda. what is happening now? >> reporter: the victim in this case along with more than 30 others were actually participating in a citizens academy when all of this happened. apparently that officer was in a role play situation, he shoot have had a unfortunately it was a live round. that woman was shot and killed. this was a simulation and live role play. the victim identified as mary knowlton, according to her facebook page, was a librarian with the scott county public library system and also known to be very active in the community.
