interstates right now couldn't get much better than this. we are all in the green. i-4, i-75, and 275 over in pinellas county running at 64 miles per hour right now. deiah? we start this morning with some extremely disturbing news. a pinellas county mother is expected to appear in court to face charges after her 6-year- old son beat his newborn sister to death. >> i steele left her children inside of a locked van while she went into a st. pete cell phone store. >> there was no air conditioning on and the windows were up. steele didn't return to the van for almost 40 minutes. the 13 day old baby started crying uncontrollably. the child says he lost his temper and started slamming the baby on the floor and ceiling of the van and started hitting her in the face. >> the 6-year-old removed baby kathleen from the car seat and

times back and forth. he said he slammed the baby and kept slamming her. >> even though the 6-year-old admitted that he beat his sister, the sheriff says he's not being charged, but his mother is. she's facing aggravated manslaughter of a child for leaving the baby in the van while she ran errands. her 6-year-old son and his younger brother are both in the custody of child protective services. >> we're learning kathleen steele is no stranger to the media. in 2009, she and he about -- series about fighting through difficulties of having children. >> i'm nervous because kathleen's nervous. >> we're absolutely very serious about having another one. >> reporter: phillip steele died of cancer in 2011. steele's youngest two children were born using steele's frozen sperm. we'll pin to follow the story.

coel in the deadly training officer seconds before he shoots and kills 73-year-old mary knowlton. this happened on wednesday. another picture shows knowlton about to role play that victim. this morning, we're hearing from the woman's son. mary knowlton's son steve says he forgives the officer who shot his mother, and the family is still struggling to deal with the tragedy. >> it just doesn't seem real that the brighte lives is gone. >> mary knowlton was a retired elementary schoolteacher and librarian. she'd been married for 55 years and had two children. steve says the mother was the family's walk. she volunteered to take part in the citizen's police academy for very special reasons. >> we had been talking two nights before about, you know, bad things from the police in this nation after all of the

she wanted to make it clear to them that she supported them. >> the police chief knew knowlton personally because she was so involved in the punta gorda community. the clear water police department says an officer who resigned last week violated policy for shooting at a moving car in late junep in late-- in late june. he was also under fire for conduct on social media posts. the posts we a trying to organize a protest following police-related shootings. now to the latest on the zika virus. the zika zone is shrinking. the health department has cleared another 4 blocks of any zika activity. the news is not all good. it comes as three other nontravel-related scales of the virus bringing the total number in florida now -- nontravel- related cases of the virus bringing the total number in

miami-dade county superintendent says kids should keep repellent on at home. other students could be allergic. roughly 4,000 students attend schools where people have attracted it. they are allowing students to wear pants and long sleeve shirts that don't match school uniforms. we're getting new details on a brain eating amoeba case in florida. >> the swimmer who came down with the latest case contracted it after water on private property in broward county. the amoeba can cause a rare, extremely deadly brain infection. this new case comes day as of an 11-year-old girl died after contracting the amoeba in a south carolina river. now to the race for the white house. you never know what you will get at a donald trump rally. the last one last night near orlando is no different. we counted five protesters getting thrown out of the

jaatllching the area cameras and will haveanother look in a moment. gainsville police are looking for the people involved in a road rage incident caught on camera. you can see it behind me. a pickup truck followed the victim into a gas station parking lot. the truck's driver, jacob sylvester and the man got out and pushed hit the victim before putting him in a choke then a woman in the truck got out and pointed a gun at the victim. sylvester is refusing to identify the three people in the truck with him. his truck had his business name on it so they were able to identify him. another road rage incident in los angeles. the driver of a dark colored honda fired shots at a family with a child inside after the family's suv sprayed windshield

authorities are still looking for the driver. >> how about a third road rage incident near st. louis. a man in a minivan got out and yelled at the driver of this red car. he tried to open the door and kicked and punched the vehicle. the witnesses say the driver of that red car was an elderly man who appeared shaken up by the whole thing. it wasn't jailhouse rock but not for the lack of trying. this has got to be a first, then again it is florida. yes, he is twerking in court during his court appearance in miami-dade county. you can see the judge is not amused. calvin griffith is facing charges of stealing an employee's car from a high school parking lot. >> i'm at a loss for words, deiah. i really am. >> me, too. governor scott is expected to announce that tourists are visiting florida in record numbers. just over 57 million tourists visited during the first half

month total ever. that's surprising considering the state was dealing with the toxic algae bloom in the waterways and zika virus. good news that people are flocking here. >> we love the traffic this time of year. it's florida. my goodness, i'm from here. janelle is a native. we're looking good right now as showers and storms are one of my favorites and one of the reasons i wanted meteorologist. the storms would blow up in the middle of the afternoon seemingly out of nowhere. clear blue skies in the morning and of course you find out you have a little humidity going on, the moisture, sea breezes and heating and all of that will come together today for another round of showers. good storms in the mid and upper 07s. not all of us get hit. we had a good chunk of it last night and right along the coast the storms got going as we talked about yesterday with a

east coast, it's pretty benign stuff with showers and thunder. it's really when they approach us and things get a little out of hand sometimes with the strong winds and frequent lightning certainly. so we had low clouds this morning because of the rain yesterday. those will evaporate here. then we'll get into some clear skies. then during the afternoon, we'll begin to see the showers building over by 95 and pushing towards the west. so by the evening hours, we'll be talking about rainfall. the forecast if you are traveling, look there is a heat wave. it will feel like 100 to 110 across the northeast today and continue with the potential for severe weather across the mid-section. this is certainly likely what happened with the flight with the severe turbulence that sent a couple of dozen people to the hospital going from boston sacramento. so for us, low 90s or temperatures right along the coast in the upper 80s. we'll have plenty of sunshine early as we check in for the weekend for saturday and sunday. both weekend days about 92.

we are continuing to follow an absolutely heartbreaking case right now in st. peters where police say a -- st. petersburg where police say a 6-year-old killed his newborn sister. we're looking at the tragedy. good morning, thank you for starting your friday with us. we have a lot of news to get to this morning. >> we do, bufirst, let's look at another day of weather and traffic. buses are on the road. >> another day so we should be used to it. the lines back up with people drop dropping kids off.
