after the mother left her children alone in her van while she ran an errand. ashley yore is live outside of the cell phone store where this tragedy actually happened. >> reporter: that's right, james. this is where investigators say a mother left her three children locked inside of a hot van while she went in to this cell phone store to run an errand for nearly 40 minutes. that mother is now facing an aggravatedanslaughter charge today. the pinellas county sheriff says 62-year-old kathleen steele left her ds, a 6-year- old, 3-year-old, and 13 day old infant all locked in the hot van without air conditioning. the infant, baby kathleen, started crying uncontrollably. investigators say 6-year-old frankie lost his temper and beat the baby's face, hitting her against the ground and ceiling of the van. >> the 6-year-old removed baby

began flipping her multiple times back and forth. he said he slammed the baby and kept slamming her. >> reporter: when steele got back, 6-year-old frankie told his mother the baby had been upset, but steele ignored him, and even ran another errand before heading back home. that's when she realized something was wrong and called her neighbor, who is a nurse, instead of 911. investigators say baby kathleen was already dead. investigators say the 6-year- old won't be charged because of his age, but he did demonstrate what he had done to baby kathleen on a doll. now, the 6-year-old and 3-year- old are both with child protective services. again, their mother will be in court at 1:30 this afternoon. of course we're going to be following that for you both on air and online. reporting live in st. pete, i'm ashley yore, abc action news. new information right now of the tampa police officer accused of raping a woman

on bond this morning. our i-team reviewed officer adam york's informant file that didn't uncover any red flags. york worked for the pinellas police department from 2000 to 2003 and met or exceeded expectations during every evaluation. tampa police say while off duty, york pulled over a woman for speeding in february near kennedy and west shore and sexually assaulted her. the department fired him but didn't arrest yesterday. a woman was arrested for stealing thousands of dollars from children. detectives accused jennifer venditti. they say the theft happened between september of last year and april of this year. the streets of sarasota county are safer this morning. the sheriff's office released new details about operation short stop. the 20-day effort targeted

during the operation, deputies arrested 30 people on charges of homicide and burglary. deputies want you to take a good look at this man. the pasco county deputies are looking for dakota kenner. he beat a woman so badly that she may have broken bones in her face. he also took away the victim's cell phone, making it impossible for her to call police. if you have any idea where he is, call 911. do you know who this is right here? this burglary suspect came through the ceiling to get into the citgo station. he took a pepsi from the case and drank it, cash and cigarettes. if you recognize him, call police. according to the results of a new survey conducted by the ybor development corporation, crime stats in that area are going down but

homeless population in the area. >> in the evening sometimes they'll try to come through here and a lot of the homeless population sometimes are mentally ill. tpd is good about it when they're here but the problem,they are not always here. >> more police patrols during the evening and a homeless liaison officer. there is a mixed reaction right no being demolished in seminole heights. some are calling it an eyesore. but it is the saving grace of hundreds of worshipers including the homeless. a drunk driver crashed into the sink wary last year when code enforcement cracked down telling the church it needed to make repairs or be doe mollished. -- or be demolished.

right now. this is a look at i-275 at the howard frankland bridge. no problems out there. we'll check in with janelle coming up to see what else you can expect from the roadways this morning. right now, the government is refusing to remove marijuana from its list of most dangerous drugs. the dea consult with the health and human services department and decided that marijuana has "no excessive medical use in the united states." the government is expanding its list of agencies that can legally grow marijuana research purposes. despite that decision, you will soon have the chance to expand or a choice to expand the use of medical marijuana. right now, the state law only allows individuals with certain conditions and terminal illnesses to use medical marijuana. the buccaneers play the first game of the pre-season last night and lost. again, it's pre-season, so the 17-9 defeat will not count in

we're dealing with, and nothing organized here. all we need is the ingredients and moisture. the hot temperatures, we'll certainly have that and the sea breeze because of the difference of the heating with the land and water here. so you can put those together and make some thunderstorms. we did yesterday. they really got going along 75. then it pushed towards the coast. it took them a while to get there so right through the early part of this morning around 2:00, 3:00 a.m. finally the rain stopped. 77 i we'll get back to 90 degrees through the middle part of the day. it'll feel like 1:00 like it's already in the upper 90s to 100 degrees. from 4:00 to 7:00 and beyond, that will be the range as they begin to build the showers and storms and push through. we'll watch that through later on today. it is 6:00, friday, and here is the commute. >> so far so good. most of the roads are dry. although, when i left, i did run toa few wet roads.
