cell phones and tablets with them on this first day. >> reporter: they are. they want to try and work that in with the learning process. it's the whole idea. do you ever wonder why your kids, maybe you, getting hooked on mobile games? remember candy crash? pokemon go? if the reason is because they are trying to get to the next level teachers at bayonet middle school, they think they can bring it into the classroom. so it opened today after being closed last year for remodeling. they are also remodeling curriculum. teachers want the classroom to feel the same way, they won't necessarily play video games in math class but they will be using a level up learning system. keeping students engaged and challenged, an area of study they like at a pace that works for them. one parent we spoke with is ecstatic about this for her daughter. >> they are going to learn how to use the device for what it was really intended for. so yes, she is here with her

line road to downtown. still have the problem through manatee county, a crash southbound i-75 just past the southern apex still causing there is. just now starting to see some improvement but look at that, still down to 12 miles an hour in some spots southbound on 75. this morning a man accused of driving drunk and crashing into a car driven by a pinellas county school teacher heads to court. that teacher, caroline sine and her passenger sean hankins ar bayfront hospital. police arrested brice macleod, they say that he ran a red light at park boulevard around 1:00 yesterday morning and now faces two dui charges causing serious injuries. he makes his first appearance today. brice macleod is no stranger to local law enforcement though. he has two prior dui convictions in manatee county among other charges. at 9:30 -- a live report from

milwaukee, wisconsin. the city erupted with violent riots over the weekend after police shot and killed a black man they say was armed. as eva pilgrim shows us businesses and police cars were set on fire and the national guard called in to restore order. >> reporter: chaos in milwaukee with at least two officers injured and one person shot. angry crowds protesting the deadly police shooting of an allegedly armed black man killed after a traffic stop. the national guard on standby but not called >> this is the police. leave the area! >> reporter: this after a weekend of unrest. people running for cover through smoke-filled mayhem. sounds of gunfire, the crowd targeting police. >> gunfire, shots fired. injured officers here. >> reporter: this police car destroyed. [screaming] >> reporter: other vehicles up in flames. six businesses in all torched. it all started saturday afternoon during a traffic stop

suspect now being identified as sylville smith. according to authorities he was armed and took off on foot. the officer who was also black ordering him to drop his weapon. when smith didn't comply firing several rounds killing smith. police say the officer was wearing a body camera. authorities have not released that body cam video, no word on when they will do that. abc news, milwaukee, wisconsin. the family of a pinellas county fef to save lives. pete huffman served 35 years in the fire service. most recently with the gulfport fire department and as an instructor at st. pete college. he died thursday after battling cancer. his doctors believe the illness was linked to decades of exposure to toxic chemicals in the line of duty. huffman's family learned the financial hardships of his diagnosis especially since florida is one of just a few states without a firefighter

the 3-year-old, michael andrews wasn't breathing and habib hanze started cpr right away. he was revived and paramedics took him to the hospital. >> i'm still in shock. i'm a father so, sleepless nights just thinking about it. i'm just glad he's safe. he's alive. if it happens again i'll do it for anyone's child. the same way. >> the hospital says that little boy is doing fine. the family of that 3-year-old say they are grateful for everyt looking into growing hops for beer. they are concerned over an incurable bacterial disease killing orange crops. florida traditionally has been considered too hot and humid to grow hops. brian pearson is a horticulturist at the university of florida. he started growing hops three years ago and says they are now good quality after he introduced the plants to the new environment. he published a paper to announce his findings, since

guns drawn, they say the evacuations were a precaution. this morning we have dramatic video showing the u.s. coast guard using a basket to save someone from a rooftop in louisiana. the governor says this was just one of more than 20,000 rescues res across louisiana after major flooding across the state. the governor declaring a state of emergency yesterday. for at least four communities. many left figuring out what is here? >> start all over again just like katrina. >> the baton rouge river center is now transformed into a shelter for those evacuees. today forecasters are expecting more flooding rain across the southern part of the state. in another coast guard video this time the crew hailed heroes after rescuing four capsized boaters including a young boy about 24 miles into the gulf off fort myers beach. take a look at this touching

pulled from the water. a good samaritan first heard a faint distress call and reported it to authorities. shortly after a boat crew found all power people clinging to that capsized boat and pull them from the water. thankfully all four seemed to be doing ok and you can see they were wearing their life vests. in alabama authorities say six people died when their small plane crashed near tuscaloosa. the plane took off from kissimmee and developed engine problems on its flight to mississippi. the faa says the plane sent a before it was supposed to land. in democracy 2016 -- a big campaign day for both the republican and democratic presidential nominees. >> both of them appearing in key states today. hillary clinton will be in pennsylvania, donald trump in ohio. the republican nominee plans to outline his foreign policy plans, his main focus destroying the islamic state group and other terrorist organizations. he'll argue the country needs to work with anyone who shares

trump is also expected to propose a new immigration policy where the u.s. would stop issuing visas when we can't perform proper screenings. he's also expected to propose grading a new test for admission to the country that would look at peoples' stances on issues like religious freedom. hillary clinton and vice president joe biden will be in scranton, that is his hometown. and today will be his first campaign rally for clinton. biden plans to declare trump the most uninformed presidential nominee biden's office says he'll argue that trump is less prepared on national security than any previous nominee. he'll also claim trump's erratic rhetoric will make all americans less safe. biden will praise clinton with offering solutions for the middle class, on jobs and education. he'll also cast clinton as key to building on the obama administration. today u.s. senate candidate patrick murphy will be in tampa. set to visit the tampa bay

she parked in the downtown lot a few days ago and paid for it at this machine. >> paid the $10 and the automatic thing and it says face up on dashboard. >> reporter: she says she dropped the little piece of paper in her car before she walked off. >> i put it in here. like that. >> reporter: so she was stunned to come back to find a green envelope under her wiper. >> i saw this -- and it was wrapped in plastic, a ticket for $60. >> a $06 ticket accused of not paying. >> i said no way. there's no way i could get a ticket for paying to park there. >> reporter: so i called the parking company which agreed to investigate and see if susie's ticket was visible on the windshield like that. wait until you see what they came up with. abm parking, the nation's second largest parking company that operated the lot quickly found the problem. they sent this photo of her car's windshield with the time

still in the mid and upper 70s. tropical stuff. we have the moisture, heat and we have the sea breezes going. remember the sea breezes get triggered by the difference in heating from land to the water here so everything gets rushed into the center and we'll have fireworks once again i think for later this afternoon. coverage 50%. but we have to wait to heat up and we have to wait for the sea breezes to get going and then we'll be able to make thunderstorms here. notice the movement of the showers that southeast to northwest. indicative of where the thunderstorms will end up. the southeast flow always gets us along the coast with the heavier thunderstorms. we'll watch that between 1:00 and 7:00. at 1:00, just isolated stuff really not think doing much, it's between 4:00 and 7 where we're talking about showers and thunderstorms. we'll get to the futurecast. let's talk tropics as we widen out the shot. nothing doing in the gulf.

clearly see moving to the west. here's the latest from the national hurricane center, we're paying attention to it. it's a wave, not a closed low or depression. but has 30% chance of doing just that as it heads towards the northwest. the models though gaining pretty good latitude with this. we'll see what happens, the reason this may not be good for the storm, we have a lot of dry saharan air up to the north, that may involve with it so that would be excellent news for us. developing and moving to the west. this pattern by the way will hold through the end of the week. i'm thinking by friday we'll do the reverse and we'll fire the storms west and then east but for now there you see everything getting pushed to the coast. then the thunderstorms that do develop tend to interact with each other. that's why sometimes we can get them really intensify with frequent lightning, heavy rainfall, even the isolated severe wind gusts. what does the clock say? well, that is 5:30 for the evening commute.

right about now students in polk county are trying to get used to a new routine on the first day of school. >> still wiping the sleep out of their eyes. some of them even settling into a brand new school. citrus pride in davenport opened up. ryan has more. >> reporter: it was a busy morning, a little chaotic. -- this is citrus ridge. if you look closely you can see by the windows workers still putting finishing touches. they are installing a couple awnings. the superintendent assured us it's done as far as what the children will see and ready to go. the exception is the gym, won't be done until the fall. you can tell this morning that

excited to try out the new school and concept. it's a first of its kind school for polk county. >> making sure we teach the students, give them that foundation now, it's not about me, it's about us and including all of us. so it's teaching them the citizenship and different things of that nature and so we want to give them the foundation early on so they can carry through life. >> reporter: part of the theme of being inclusive is an interesting tid about it -- every morning they are learn american sign language as part of their morning show. as part of the morning announcement. it's a pretty cool concept, interesting, unique. their mascot i would say pretty fitting. they are going to be called the pioneers. live in davenport, abc abc action news. the first day of school in pasco county too. instead of confiscating cell phones a middle school is telling middle students to bring them in.

school hopes will have students more engaged and focused. james tully with more. how did administrators come up with this idea? >> reporter: dan, they tell me they saw exactly what parents see, their kids just buried in their phone playing mobile games. remember candy crush? pokemon go? kids are not just playing them. they are engaged, focused in it. why are they playing the games? why does anybody play them? to get to the next level, right? the principal here said how can we classroom? thing is though, in this day and age you have to use modern technology to, like tablets, smartphones, to do this. teachers want students to have that with them in class. they say it's going to help with the learning process and to give students the feeling they are constantly leveling up their education just like in a mobile game. parents, the ones we spoke to, they are willing to give this a try. >> i'm ok with it.

macleod drunk behind the wheel ran into them. we're learning this is not his first run-in with the law. two prior dui convictions in manatee county, in hillsborough county arrested for driving with an open container and driving with a suspended license. brice macleod now facing two counts of dui causing serious bodily injury. for caroline sine's co-workers and friends the focus now helping any way they can, a gofundme page already gathering funds for medical expenses. >> we're all supportive of each other so we'll be ok. we'll pray and stand together and we'll make it through. >> reporter: this is certainly a tough day for all of those hire. at last check the two victims were in critical condition. as for that driver he's set to be in court later this afternoon at 1:30. reporting live from pinellas county, rodney dunigan, abc action news. a wildfire in northern california has now cleared out some 4,000 homes.

10 houses, this fire has spread to nearly five square miles jumping a road and containment line and ripped through several businesses. crews also had to evacuate a nearby hospital and farms as firefighters struggled to get it under control. bad news like lie still to come in a tragic and deadly fire we brought as breaking news last week interest from maryland. the apartment complex went up in flames thursday. authorities say people are still missing now. they have recovered five bodies from the debris, two just children. ages 3 and 8 at least four others are still unaccounted for. developing this morning a hate crimes task force looking into the shooting death of two muslim leaders in new york city. police just releasing a sketch of the shooting suspect. surveillance video actually captured the ambush saturday in queens. the gunman came up from behind murdering an imam and his assistant as they left a mosque after midday prayers. the council on american islamic relations is offering a $10,000 reward for tip leading to an arrest.

will gather in brooklyn for a memorial prayer. authorities have arrested three wrong-way drivers in the bay area over the weekend. deputies say this man, giovanni mendez crashed into another car after he started to drive southbound in the northbound lane of anderson road. two people were injured in the crash. mendez is charged with a dui. troopers want to learn how a dog got left on a busy interstate in polk county. the good news, the dog seems to be ok but troopers are trying to find out how he ended the i-4 median near state road 54, the -- that is exit number 44. if you know anything about how the dog got there or who owns it call fhp. international stock markets are posal higher today after a recordsetting week on wall street. and good news for your 401k now, the dow up a few minutes after the opening bell. 68 points to 18,645.

later this afternoon 100 to 105 is how it will feel. we'll rain but it's going to take the whole day so the longer it takes the hotter we get and we'll have sinking air as well. things coming together for storms later but also for the heat to build in. look at the showers and thunderstorms all over but you have to get it going as far as the heat. talk about futurecast. look at this event we talked about last week. goodness, two feet of water already fallen in louisiana. they are watches, all those rivers flooding and they continue to pour down to the gulf. now we're involve good friends in texas if you're traveling to this part of the world keep in mind it will be hairy for them there. for us southeast wind, nothing unusual here. it will fire off storms today. notice how they continue to fan in from east-to-west, through the mid-week and really through thursday. friday we'll transition into the reverse pattern where we'll have morning coastal showers and everything goes in the other direction.
