faced two dui convictions in manatee county. this n this case a judge raised bond to $250,000 calling him a threat to the public. coming up at 5:30 how pinellas county schools are responding in providing support to students and staff. a beloved firefighter who lost his battle with cancer would will be laid to -- will be laid to rest today in pinellas county. pete huffman's funeral will be in clearwater today. abc action news anchor james this will be happening today. >> reporter: the procession is going to conclude at the calvary catholic cemetery and then huffman will be laid to rest here later this morning. it's hard to put in words just how tragic this is. cancer forced him into early retirement after he spent the last 17 months taking treatments. doctors convinced his career fighting fires, a long career fighting fires, the exposure to toxic chemicals contributed to his diagnosis.

pete huffman's wife marcy who hopes her husband's death paves the way for firefighters and their families to receive better benefits. huffman was forced to use his pension to cover medical costs, chemotherapy he took twice a month costs $18,000 a treatment. >> so, of course we took retirement money to pay medical costs. so it's just -- now there's no retirement money left are coming in. so they need to have a plan. >> reporter: a possible plan huffman and his family supported the fight, the fight florida is in to get what is called a cancer presumtion law in the books to guarantee benefits to firefighters if they get cancer. the family is establishing a scholarship in his name at st.

achieve their dreams. live in clearwater, james tully, abc action news. >> thank you. we have new information after a georgia murder suspect is arrested in north florida for killing a police officer. we have learned that slain officer was not wearing body armor when he was shot. 24-year-old royhim deeds is accused of murdering that police officer tim smith saturday. authorities say deeds was found hiding in th a car in nassau county. a relative of deeds says he's had legal problems but not to the extent of taking someone's life. >> a police officer doing his job and killed as a result of that. it's sad when it happens and certainly a good day when we can find that individual that did it and arrest him. >> yesterday would have been

the man accused of killing a st. augustine priest is due back in court september 16th. steven murray appeared in a georgia courtroom yesterday where prosecutors confirmed he will face the death penalty. investigators say murray kidnapped father renee robert last april and forced robert into the trunk of his own car. investigators found robert's car in south carolina and arrested murray nearby. deputies say murray led them back to the father's near augusta, georgia. 5:06. to an update on the zika virus. someone from texas just tested positive after recently traveling to the miami area. the risk for the virus is highest there. health officials say it's the first texas case linked to travel within the u.s. currently in florida there are 28 new travel related cases, one of them in hillsborough county. another in polk county involving a pregnant woman and

case. >> the total number of florida cases is now at 470. this is certainly not what you want to see happen with your mail. a fort myers mail carrier caught on camera tossing mail a restaurant owner shared his video from his security camera. a fort myers realtor tells us that he paid thousands to mail the flyers that instead ended up in the trash. the postal inspector says agents are now investigating. the employee could face a fine and even prison if he is convicted. keep your eyes on the screen so i can show you this woman. st. pete police need your help to track her down. in this video detectives say she's cashing counterfeit

banks. back in march. in total police say she made off with more than $12,000. if you know who she is you're urged to call police. this cape coral man is waking up in jail after a dangerous night out. police say christopher benetottos spend sunday night drunk but his hands weren't just on the wheel, officers say he was fighting guns from his jeep. they say he was so intoxicated he couldn'st detectives found a loaded pistol and rifle in his vehicle. the second day for the florida alligator hunt. florida fish and wildlife approved 5,000 permits. each hunter can take two gators this hunting season and it ends november 1st. right now in tampa, 80 degrees, nice and dry so good weather for heading out the door early this morning. and all of our major roads and bridges are dry as well.

welcome back. thank you for joining us on abc today. here's a live look at i-275 near mlk. no issues to report there. 81 degrees in tampa. we'll get updates on traffic and weather in a few minutes. this morning investigators believe this devastating wildfire in california was set on purpose. the flames destroying more than 170 homes. here's a look at some of the damage, leaving dozens homeless. causing over $10 million worth

damon pashlu on 17 counts of arson. he was jailed on suspicion he sparked the wildfire though didn't say exactly how they tracked him down. they are also linking him now to other numerous wildfires in the same county over the last year. the death toll from flooding in louisiana now up to seven. crews pulled that latest victim from floodwaters in baton rouge and looks like there could be more devastation coming to that area. right now more than 10,000 people are living in shelters homes by flooding. crews saved more than 20,000 people from rising water. that flooding as you mentioned could continue today. shay is watching another front heading in that direction. >> yeah. they are getting a break this morning but they are still seeing a few lighter showers moving through and you can see in louisiana right now that there are some dry spots but you see just behind my back the more widespread rain and that is all associated with this stalled out front which will

of the baton rouge area over the next couple of hours. so we will start to see heavier rain in the area throughout the day today, not what this area needs but we'll continue to monitor it and let you know how things go. certainly if you have traveled to the area you want to call ahead to see if your travel plans need to be changed. no problems here on the area roads or bridges this morning. like weather to start the day. we've got a lot of sunshine once the sun comes up. warm and muggy. we've got an east-to-west flow that means the rain starts on the east coast of florida and works its way across the state through the afternoon. the futurecast keeps showing this batch of green on top of us this morning but so far i'm not seeing any rain developing. so again, we're off to a dry start. we'll have a better chance for a few inland showers by noon and then working their way more

off-shore close to sunset. it's a very similar pattern and similar timing to what we've seen lately and the rain is most likely between about 2:00 and 6:00 today. temperatures this morning are starting off anywhere from the upper 70s to low 80s. 80 tampa now, lake wales at 78. lakeland 77. crystal river 77 and sarasota at 79. over the next couple of days we'll have about 50% coverage of storms through the afternoon and early evening storms because of that east-to- west trend. by thursday and friday we start to see some slight changes and slightly lower coverage. the weekend is where we go back to a west-to-east flow. what does that mean? a chance for a shower or two along the coast in the morning and then more widespread rain moving inland through the day. so the rain starts a little earlier. that's the bottom line. janelle, i ran into some of that traffic around the veterans expressway and

morning but that is better now? >> yeah, corey dierdorff who drives around for us and lets us know when things clear just went through and said the construction on hillsborough right under the veterans expressway is all clear. you're good to go there. he's now on 275 heading in towards tampa. no crashes or breakdowns. really your drive on the interstates looking great out there. most of the lanes wide open. we have one crash to tell you about that just came in, in also see fire trucks out there, in tarpon springs, orange street at pinellas avenue. my traffic indicators not showing any major slowdowns but just use caution, you may want to give yourself extra time if you are heading that way. opening up our cameras, this is what it looks like at i-275 around ashley in downtown. you're looking at just a five- minute drive from here to the howard frankland bridge. quick check of the average speeds on the interstates as i

we see the red light cameras all over the bay area. in bradenton though the city council is getting ready to decide if it will keep theirs up or take them down. seven red light cameras have been in place for years but the city contract with the company who helps operate the cameras will expire this week. while some want to keep them around others, well, they are not so sure. >> it's going to help traffic safety in the gun in the other direction. you see traffic accidents all the time. >> i think if an officer sees you that is one thing but, it's like setting you up there. >> the bradenton police department says accidents at these intersections have gone up and they can't tell why but say accidents from people running red light, have gone down in the past two years.

5:18. police have now charged a man for killing a new york city mosque leader his associate. they started to question 25- year-old oscar moral sunday after he hit a bicyclist with his car just 10 minutes after the shooting. it was not until last night that they charged him with murder after investigators say they found a revolver at his home and clothes similar to the one worn by the gunman captured on this surveillance video. the trial of a florida teen accused of pretending an elderly patient is being delayed. a judge postponed malakai love robinson's trial to november so his attorney can consider an insanity defense. the attorney says a recent mental health evaluation of his 19-year-old client has him considering an insanity defense. love-robinson was arrested in february after deputies say he was practicing medicine without a license and stole more than
