senate is doing. dummies on top of a bus. the man and message behind these bizarre moves. it's 4:00. time nor the now tampa bay -- for the now tampa bay. we have breaking news. a pinellas county deputy shooting at a man while trying to serve a warrant. >> the deputy was not hurt. let's get to ryan smith live in st. petersburg live in the neighborhood where it happened. ryan. >> reporter: yeah, guys. we learned in the past hour and a half that the pinellas county sheriff's office has been trying to track down this suspect for several weeks. that investigation led them to this house. you can see it's an active scene. that's because detectives, get this, are waiting to execute a search warrant. they found not only their suspect inside here but also a marijuana grow operation. let's take a look at the

williams. the sheriff says that he was hell bent on harming police officers today. county deputies wanting him forearmed robbery and kidnapping from charges in 2015 and drug possession and a domestic strangulation incident this year. detective chris kramer spotted williams crawling through a back door with a .9-millimeter handgun after deputies and detectives swarmed the property. he ordered the suspect to raise his hands. instead, williams, according to th handgun. the detective firing one shot. no one was hurt. according to the sheriff, williams later stated officers were lucky he didn't shoot back. >> he knew we were here. he knew that law enforcement was here to take him into custody. he knew we were on the perimeter. we were trying to get him out of the house. what does he do? he goes into self mode and crawls and coming out and he was looking to ambush those deputies in the backyard. >> reporter: again, the sheriff

that williams told detectives after the arrest that they were, quote, lucky to be alive. we also learned that detectives used surveillance video this afternoon to make sure that their suspect was in fact home. we also want to mention that his father also facing charges stemming from -- from this incident today for harboring a fugitive. that's the latest live in south st. petersburg. i'm ryan smith for the now tampa bay. >> thank you, lots of developments on the zika virus. another new non-travel-related case. we're talking about palm beach county this time which is an hour north of the miami-dade neighborhoods. even though just yesterday they said there were four new cases. in the meantime here in the tampa bay area we're talking about pinellas county here

as well. david jolly thinks we should know more about what is going on as well as where the person lives. breeding grounds for mosquitoes is on the rise. >> reporter: right now calls are coming in from all over pinellas county about dirty pools and ponds possibly breeding mosquitoes. >> the governor's announcement went through and our phone started ringing. >> reporter: rob helps steady mosquitoes for the are finding different places to breed. >> they prefer tiny containers. >> reporter: think less water is more concern. these mosquitoes need just half an inch of water. we're talking just about a capful of water and they prefer water right after this rains. pinellas county had 200 calls on tuesday will mosquitoes. usually they get around 300 to 400 calls a month.

former new york mayor rudy giuliani saying the scandal will be bigger than watergate. just a short time ago we learned the funeral arrangements for a fixture in the tampa community for so many years have been finalized. lawrence higgins, the founder and pastor of saint lawrence catholic church for 49 years will be laid to rest next wednesday at 11:30 at the burial garden of memories cemetery in tampa. before that, though, there will be public viewings on in the evening. both of those happening at saint lawrence catholic church in tampa. he was 87 years old. and now we know what caused a fire at some condos in clearwater overnight. firefighters tell us that someone smoking on a balcony tried to put out a cigarette in a plastic water bottle but ended upstarting a fire. the people were woken up to smoke alarms.

all right. about this time yesterday, dell mabry looked like this. >> oh. >> a flooded mess. and those afternoon storms are back. but in some places. shay ryan is here to tell us where. >> yeah. not everyone seeing rain. we had quite a few that rolled through an hour or two ago. now we're drying up across the area. take a look at the main sail beach in. so often this time of day we look at this picture and it's blue skies and sunshine and folks are hanging out on the beach. take a look pretty gusty out there. on the radar, things are nice and dry between pinellas and hillsborough county. you can see the showers and storms that have rolled off shore. and still gusty winds across anna marie island. we are at least drying out across the coastline for now. showers and storms are developing in eastern polk county and highlands county. around 6:00, we will still see scattered storms.

>> all day long we have checking the world map of earthquakes happening throughout the day following the devastating 6.2 magnitude quake in italy. italy hit with aftershocks throughout the day. some temples damaged. at least three people are dead there. a weaker quake also reported as well today in indonesia. laura, you have a look at it's really bad there. >> right. just look at this at this aerial picture. devastating pictures we're getting in. even worse than that, the death toll, 120 people confirmed dead from the earth wake. there are stories of survival right now like an 8-year-old being pulled from the rubble alive. that magnitude 6.2 quake hit italy 100 miles northeast of rome as people were sleeping

going forward, republican state senator jonathan perry wants to regulate citizen heroes. he wants them to get training certificates and pay a permit fee and he gave two reasons why. one, there's a liability issue there. say a rescuer goes out to save someone and they get hurt or die themselves. second, you will never know how many people are actually being rescued. as you can imagine, members of the self proclaimed cajun navy do not agree. how can you regulate people helping people? by the it will cost $30 million to just to get the work started for relief for the area. you think you're getting too much ice in your iced coffee at starbucks? a federal judge is saying too bad. that. >> threw out a lawsuit. the lawsuit claimed a 24-ounce iced drink actually only has 14- ounce of fluids. but the judge didn't buy it.

reasonable person -- meet a reasonable person's expectation. another court is considering a similar lawsuit we told you about back in may. breaking news. we want to take you live to indianapolis where a tornado has touched down there. at least one. possibly more. this is in marion county. we're hearing report that's a starbucks was destroyed and kids are trapped in a school area we're talking about is about an hour from indianapolis. let's talk to shay about this. >> we do have an active -- several active tornado warnings right now in the area, right in the downtown indianapolis area. and then also one to the north across i-69. so if you do have friends and family in the area, make sure to alert them. they probably hear the sirens going off outside. i have seen plenty of reports

blaring. again, there is a starbucks that has been destroyed. as you mentioned, kids trapped in the school. so definitely see serious situation there. that is the one spot we have significant weather across the nation. in our area, much calmer. typical showers rolling across the area from east to west. and you can see that there. there's not a lot going on. but we do have some storms in polk county right now. and they are all headed off to the east. so -- off to the west, that is few bubbling up throughout the remainder of the evening. 86 right now in tampa. a few of the showers and storms rolled through an hour or so ago helped to bring the temperatures down. 89 in brandon right now. 84 in bartow. 90 in haines city. 90 in new port richey. 89 in sarasota right now. so as we continue through the night, we will still see a chance for a few of the hit or miss showers and storms. after sunset, they will be

side tomorrow afternoon only to have the afternoon showers and storms again. let's talk about the tropics. this is where things get a bit more interesting. of course we have gaston off in the atlantic. that won't cause any problem for us. but it is this storm, batch of storms here that have about an 80% chance of developing into a numbered or named storm over the next couple of days that we're keeping a close eye on. right now the spaghetti models are bringing it in the general direction of this weekend. and then after that, this is where the spaghetti models in general are bringing it over the state of florida. there is a lot of uncertainty about the direction that this storm is going and what the possible intensity of the storm could be as it impacts the state of florida. if it does at all. again, we're continuing to monitor the storm. we will know more over the next couple of days. i have the latest path. and, boy, talk about interesting model projections.

infamous balloon boy drama, it went just as planned. ryan raiche, the now tampa bay. well, breaking news. american university in afghanistan has been attacked. we're waiting to find out if anyone was killed or injured. an associated press photographer was in class when it happened. he went to the window after he heard an explosion and somebody shot at him. nine students were able to get out and hide campus. security forces got there immediately. the attack comes two weeks after two university staff members were kidnapped from their car. the gunman or their whereabouts are still not known. a man was arrested in london on suspicious of preparing a terrorist attack. syrian rebels have captured a keyboarder town from isis. this as turkish tanks move to

decided to bring it right up the coast of florida, the west coast of florida and making landfall close to tallahassee before going inland and across the carolinas. talk about a difference. normally we don't see this kind of flip flopping when you are this close to a storm nearing your area. so we do know where it's going to start and where it's likely to be by sunday morning. but it is going to take some time between now wher still disorganized. doesn't have a concentrated center of circulation. it is strengthen and has strong winds and bringing potential rains to the bahamas in the days ahead. if you're traveling in that area, check ahead because conditions will be declining over the next couple of days of. it's where the red spot is when the storm gets close to the bahamas this weekend when we will have a better idea where the storm is headed. the problem is by that time,

with more cities considering taxing the drinks. the first study is out showing that the taxes could work. berkeley was the first city in the country to pass a soda tax. it shows a 21% drop in people drinking sugary drinks since it was implemented march of last year. during the same time, san francisco that voted down a tax like this saw a 4% increase. but laura, the american beverage association says the study has flaw holes in the theory, it's the people who made the sodas. they say there's no indication that it has had an impact on people's health. philadelphia will be the next city to add one in 2017. san francisco did it. oakland, california did it, and then boulder colorado are all considering it right now.

happening outside right now. shay, what can you tell us? >> well, things are looking pretty decent out there at the moment. we have the regular round of showers and storms this afternoon. but not a ton of coverage. take a look and you can see the main sail beach in on anna maria island still looking a bit cloudy and a bit breezy out there as well. there are still folks hanging out on the beaches and parking themselves in the sand. can't be too bad out there. as we look back at what is going on we do have three active tornado warnings. if you have friends and family in bloomington, around indianapolis and north of muncie, across 69, that's where we have three different active tornado warnings. with a history of tornadoes on the ground, this is certainly a serious system tonight that we will continue to watch. again as we look in our area, things are looking good. we have got pretty dry conditions across tampa bay. if you do plan on running an

the next couple of hours or want to grill on the back porch, things are looking good for that. there are a few showers and storms rolling through polk county. they have been ringing themselves out working their way to the west. a lot of that won't hold together. but take a look at the futurecast. you can see it is showing the highest chances for rain is in the southern counties. we're not seeing a lot developing there either. as we move through the next couple of hours, it will taper off shore. maybe an isolated shower desoto or highlands county, right around midnight. overnight we will be nice and dry. tomorrow morning as you're stepping out the door or heading out for the jog or bike ride, things will be nice and dry. it's not until noon that we see showers or an isolated storm bubbling up inland. then it becomes more widespread with our showers and storms that lasts through the afternoon and just after sunset. nothing too out of the ordinary for tomorrow. typical summertime pattern will

in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. then when the kids are going home, the best chance that you will catch a shower as the kids are stepping out of school will be inland with those showers and storms becoming more numerous by the time that the kids get into the after-school sports. sow may want to check with the coaches again as usual as the storms bubble up. over the next couple of days, highs in the low 90s. we will 50 to 60% chance of coverage of storms on sunday. the that's mainly for afternoon showers and storms. this is our typical pattern through sunday. early next week, there is the possibility that even here in tampa bay we could see some impacts from that storm that is brewing out there near the leeward islands. we will have more on that with denis at 5:00. >> shay, we do have breaking news coming in. the storms in indianapolis that you were talking about just a second ago, damage reports
