troubling news. rodney, how did this thing pull off? >> reporter: deiah, this is a simple scam. the crooks find a car with an unlocked car door, walk inside and grab the garage door opener. they will use this to open the garage then simply walk right inside of the home. in fact, we spoke with one victim whose home was broken into as she and her family, including a small baby, were asleep inside. >> you just think about how differently things turned out. we're thankful for that but yeah, definitely feeling vulnerable and violated. >> reporter: as you can imagine, she would. in the most recent case, both family's cars were stolen. across the bay area, you can see crooks in action night after night doing this exact same thing. criminals are targeting new neighborhoods under construction where people feel safe. back out here live this

year, investigators say they've looked into about 2,000 car break-ins, and cars were unlocked in half of those cases. so make sure you lock those cars. rodney dunningan, abc action news. a substitute teacher is off the job for now after a 5- year-old student said he choked her. sebring police say the student goes to kindergarten learning center. take a look at the picture her parents took on monday afternoon after the 5-year-old told her mom what happened earlier that day. those are red marks behind the girl's ear. >> she said he walked up and grabbed my neck and choked me. >> for her to come home and say a story like that is shocking. that story didn't change no matter how many people she told it to. >> the florida department of children and families is investigating the allegations. the deputy superintendent of the school district says the

their schools as they wait for the results of the investigation. the fight over whether to release 911 calls from the pulse nightclub shooting is heading back to state court. federal court lacks jurisdiction over this case, the judge ruled. the media wanted the city of orlando to release the 911 calls and communications police had with the gunman omar mateen. the city says the recordings are exempt under public records law. mateen was killed by police in june after a lengthy standoff in a mass shooting that killed 49 people and wounded 53 others. meanwhile, the wounded victims are overwhelmed by the kindness of the hospitals that treated them. we told you just yesterday the hospitals are donating all of their medical services for victims that they treated that night. you think that sometimes all hospitals want is money. it really shows that the community has come together. there's hate every dids where, but there's so much love in orlando.

million in medical bills added up from the shooting. two months later, many victims worried about how had he would pay for those bills. they are now relieved. some of those who have more serious injuries have not been able to go back to work. as more and more zika cases are detected in the bay area and across the state, governor rick scott isn't willing to wait think longer for federal assistance. he's planning a trip to washington d.c. in less than two weeks to meet with members of congress the day they return from recess. he hopes that will make anywhere top priority. since the start of that recess, zika has moved in to florida. health officials have found 43 cases. earlier, scott authorized $26 million in state funds for prevention and preparedness. all but $3 million of that has already been spent. the florida department of health says the only place where zika is being spread in florida is limited to two spots in miami-dade county. two cases with are reported in

pinellas county. the health department is still investigating those cases. we'll pass along those findings when we finish. staff members from both donald trump and hillary clinton's campaigns were at the white house yesterday for their first transition meeting. >> president obama wants to minimize any disruptions when he leaves office in january. tomorrow, clinton is expected to receive her classified intelligence briefings. trump received his last week. each major party candidate gets one. it gives the candidates a broad look at the national securi threats and challenges facing the country before he or she assumes office. meanwhile, trump continued his attack on hillary clinton yesterday at a rally in new hampshire. he called the connection between her family's charitable foundation and state department "watergate all over again." clinton rolled out a new ad campaign linking trump to white supremacists.

the bay area. senator marco rubio decided to run for re-election after dropping out of the presidential race. he says it's crucial that conservatives vote in the primary. he's scheduled to meet with supporters at courier field in plant city at 11:15 this morning. many voters are not waiting until tuesday to vote in the primary. in hillsborough county, over 90,000 people have early voted or voted by mail. in every county, tomorrow will be voting ends on sundayd. the bolts are inviting you to a good party outside amalie arena this afternoon. there's going to be free food, live music, give aways, and of course an appearance by thunder bug. the first 100 people in line will receive a $25pdq gift

78 degrees in tampa. 77 in st. peters. on the pinellas side near gandy boulevard, no big problems. traffic and weather details are just moments away. authorities in arizona hope a bigger reward will lead to the arrest of a serial shooter in the phoenix area. several law enforcement agencies are now teaming up to offer a $75,000 reward for information. since the first shooting on march 17th, shooter has struck. prosecutors stress the person who provides that information will not get into trouble. shoppers at the florida mall in orlando got quite a scare after an inspection of a new restaurant sent them scrambling for safety. police say the news popping prompted the crowd out of the mall mistaking the noise for gunfire. joey if a tone's now hot dog kiosk was there. the fire test involved popping

pinellas park. also seeing about a 74-degree startoff for east lake and olds marsh. those are your current temperatures for right now. not a problem as you start off. it will be getting warmer later, though. temperatures rising rapidly through the morning up to 86 by 10:00, 90 by noon. 91 by about 2:00. that's when the showers start. here is a look at florida's most accurate day planner as far as we go through the futurecast. watching the storms pull across from the east. tailgating, there could be showers through 6:00 across tampa as well. here is a look at the forecast for tonight's game at ray jay. 86 degrees at kickoff time should be mostly cloudy throughout the contest, but it gets wetter through the weekend. again, still seeing those easterly winds but more atmospheric moisture means a little bit better rain chance through the afternoon and early evening on saturday. sunday looks to be wetter as well. 30% chance of showers today, up to 50% for saturday.
