degree felony charges. keeping your car doors unlocked puts you and your family in more danger than you might realize. they are telling us about a crime trend in hillsborough county. car thieves are taking their crimes one step further. once they get inside of the unlocked cars, they are using the garage door opener to get inside of the homes. one family woke up to their home burglarized and both cars stolen while the mother four children were asleep. >> it's completely violating. it's scary. you think how differently things could have turned out. so i'm thankful for that. still a feeling of feeling vulnerable and violated. >> police arrested a 14-year- old days later driving in the stolen car. inside of the car were items from multiple break-ins . the

the firefighter had to be rushed to dade city hospital. the fire chief says the firefighter is now awake and talking and expected to be okay. some disturbing news right now to tell you about. a 70-year-old florida woman is accused of trying to drown her dog at a daytona area beach. a witness says the would am had the dog on a leash. as he was trying to get out of the water, she kept pulling it back in. the consciousness. the dog is recovering. the woman is facing animal cruelty charges. two attorneys are permanently disbarred. they were found guilty last year of multiple ethics violations for setting up a rival attorney in a dui sting. the three represented bubba the love sponge during a defamation

the first funerals will be held today for some of those killed in the earthquake in central italy. the death toll has been raised now to 267, as nearly 1,000 after-shocks have rattled the region. >> you are looking right now at a makeshift tent city that's set up outside one of the quake-ravaged towns. 1200 people are forced to sleep in tents. 215 people have been rescued since wednesday. hundreds more have been treated for injuries they suffered in the quake. the world trade center in new york city is honoring the victims of the earthquake. you can see the top of the building there lit up in the colors of italy's flag, green, white, and red. new york's governor andrew cuomo sent his condolences and says new york is ready to lend support. i just wanted to get home to my family, and to see that

11 mi claims of abuse inside of a local kindergarten classroom a day after parents told us their 5-year-old is choked, police are revealing details about the findings. abc action news anchor lindsay logue joins us now in the studio with an update. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with the commander of the sebring police department. they along with dcf are investigating the case. what i can tell you is investigators say the little girl's claims are unfounded. we've spoke with the girl -- we

old came home from school monday with these marks, bruises, and scratches and claims her substitute teacher choked her to the point that she couldn't breathe. police now tell me they have no support or evidence to prove that the teacher put his hands on the child or choked the child. they interviewed other students in class and no one could corroborate her story. we'll learn more about the teacher as the day goes on, but we know he is no stranger to the classroom. in fact, last assigned as a one-on-one helper for a disabled student. dcf, as i say, is investigating the case and their case is still open. of course we'll let you know what they find. dan, dean ya -- dan, deiah, back to you. new developments after two nuns were found dead in their home. police now say they believe the women are victims of a robbery. investigators have found a car

murder scene in mississippi. it was on a secluded treat a mile from the house. the two worked as nurse practitioners in a clinic for the poor. the police will not say how they died but a remember rend says police told him -- that a reverend says police told him they were stabbed. store surveillance video shows a driver running over a 6-year-old boy. the driver stops after he then gets back into his van and drives away. police are hoping the cameras will help them track down the driver. >> they got the license plate, i believe. there's a lot of information. i'm glad that helps. >> meantime, all of us are kind of wondering who it is and if that person's found. >> the father of the boy ran over to his son, scooped him up after the 6-year-old was hit.

hospital. a mother is defending her decision to pepper spray children outside of a school. she says she used the pepper sway to get several students to stop attacking her two sons. the school district says four students had to be treated. one had to be taken to the hospital. she says she wouldn't have had to use the pepper spray in the resource officers been there. >> officers responded immediately. since the incident, favors pleaded not guilty. authorities in arizona hope a bigger reward will lead to the arrest of a serial shooter in the phoenix area. several law enforcement agencies are now teaming up to offer a $75,000 reward for information. since the first shooting on march 7, it's killed seven people and wounded two others. the victims were all shot while

front of a house. prosecutors stress the person who provides the information will not get into trouble. right now, a lot of families are stuck in temporary shelters after wednesday's powerful storms. the red cross is giving 220 storm victims in the kokomo area a safe place to stay. governor mike pence stopped by to tour the shelter. also, take a look at this video right here. remember this video we showed you yesterday? that is video of a starck one of those tornadoes. 20 people were huddled together inside of the bathroom when the building collapsed. the bathroom where they stayed was also in tact. one of the women inside says an alert manager is responsible for making sure that everybody was safe. that woman you see here went back to the scene yesterday. it just so happened that the manager was also there.

out of the east. that means that the showers will show up later after we boost those temperatures into the low 90s. the feels-like readings will be into the low triple digits. of course we are still watching for hermine. at this point, hermine is just not much of a threat at all. vicki defrank can expect more gorgeous pictures tonight and into tomorrow. we will keep an eye on this storm syst, has 30 mile-per-hour winds. so it is still basically just a tropical wave. the pressure at 1009 milibars moving to the west at about 9 miles per hour. the very latest on this is that they are not even sending the hurricane hunter planes up because there is no center of circulation. if this doesn't get any better organized, it's not going to stand much of a chance to become a storm. however there's still one of

moving into the center of the gulf. this is not good news for the folks up in louisiana, but it looks as though we could get some rain out of this and the winds right off shore. the problems associated with a tropical storm system or hurricane will not be ours, at least at this point. that's what things are looking like. we did see a few storms off to the south last night as the winds came in from and east. we're very warm right now. 82 in tampa and clearwater. 80 degrees right now in new park richie. it's 79 in st. petersburg, the only 70-something on the map. everybody else is in the low 80s already. watching the winds come in on the futurecast will help drive the rain from the center of the state back toward our coast. now, by 4:00 or so, folks will

raymond james stayed yum. we could see some of those showers had andch storms around. take your poncho, but i don't think you will need it for the game. things should clear out by 6:00. saturday, more moisture in the atmosphere. we'll see the storms starting to bloom by 4:00 in the afternoon. here is a look at the hour by hour forecast pushing up to 92 by 4:00 storms in earnest through the bay area. again, by 6:00, 7:00, we'll start to see things clear out. for the bucs and browns, it will feel like about 93, so a very steamy setup. out on the water, we're looking at northeast winds for boaters at about 10 knots or so and a moderate chop on the inlet waterways. the uv index is at an 11.

her? anna is one of the latest victims in a growing trend in hillsborough county. criminals breaking into unlocked cars, getting their hands on the garage door opener and hen am making their way in. two of the. families were -- two of the families were asleep in house. criminals are targeting new neighborhoods under construction where people feel safe. since the beginning of the year, deputies have investigated 2,000 car break-s in. more than half of those cars were left unlocked. >> it sucks the wind out of you. it's sort of like an absence-of feeling. >> certainly terrible for that family. thankfully in none of these

start off and should be great for staying on the beach. water temperature and air temperature at honeymoon island will stay around 88 degrees. it will be warmer inland, though. i want to show you the latest reconnaissance mission. this is last night, early this morning with the wind speeds about 28 miles per hour. that was the maximum wind speed. they canceled the recon mission this morning because frankly there's no center of circulation. nonetheless, we're still keeping an eye on this system, which has about a 60% chance of getting developed. there's gaston ovre that has a little bit more of a chance of getting developed. around here, we're going to develop some of the storms by later on like we did last night that pushed in from the north and east. right now, we've got 82 in

brooksville has 80. 82 in wanter haven. as we come into the metro area, 82 in clear water. tampa with 82 and 86 degrees out in bradley. we could see mid-90s from brandon to bartow before the storms roll in. again, with the northwest winds, they come in from the center of the state. we have good coverage around the tampa metro area. it will not be a complete washout. the storms will move through and things off with ray j. with the browns and bucs, it should be 84/85 degrees. tomorrow, a little bit better coverage of the storms as they move across. then nine they dissipate about 7:00 or 8:00. we'll see more of a chance of those storms coming in on sunday. here's a look at florida's most accurate beach forecast, again, getting up to 88 degrees. don't forget that uv index is in the extreme category.

slathered on. especially before those storms come, you'll be pushing off. don't make it look like we're not wrapping up the rain chances. 50% today, 60% on sunday. we have more moisture so a better chance of coverage as they push in from the east. into monday and tuesday, regardless of whether or not we have system, we'll still get more moisture from the caribbean. that means a chance of breezy and highs in the upper 80s. it doesn't look like a tropical storm or hurricane will be here for us to deal with.
