all new at 11:00 video of a massive sinkhole that opened at a facility in mulberry. good evening. i'm wendy ryan. >> i'm jamison uhler. tonight there are reports of millions of gallons of contamin into the florida aquifer. >> cameron poland is live with the latest. >> reporter: that's right, guys. we're at the entrance of this facility. the sinkhole is three miles south of where we are now. officials tell us at this point 215 million gallons of contaminated water have been released into the aquifer. tonight crews at the new whales

radioactive water that is seeping into the florida aquifer. officials found the massive sinkhole in late august in a containment pond near one of the stacks. >> one of our field technicians whose job is to monitor water levels in the ponds, when they were making their rounds they identified that there was a water level drop. >> reporter: workers drained the pond and found a 45-foot hole so deep they couldn't see a bottom. the company 215 million gallons of contaminated water used to process fertilize hear drained into the hole. >> we activated a recovery well so that we can capture any water that has gone down the hole. >> reporter: mosaic says that recovery well is engineered to pull contaminated water out of the aquifer and back into the plant but that could take months. in the meantime the company is using an extensive network of

far the contaminated water may have traveled. mosaic says so far the wells have not detected any additional contaminant in the groundwater, a sign the pumps are working. >> we have been talking to the florida department of environmental protection every single day. >> reporter: mosaic says it is monitoring around the clock and there is no risk to any surrounding communities. now, each one of those ponds sits on top of a liner that keeps that contaminated water however we are told the sinkhole collapsed that liner, sending water gushing below. we are going to continue to update you on this situation both on-air and on-line at abcactionnews.com. for abc action news i'm cameron poland. >> last year mosaic agreed to pay nearly $2 billion to settle a federal lawsuit. the company agreeing to clean up operations at six florida

a home on ridgetop loop in weeki wachee was blocked off as detectives investigated how the homeowner died. >> he's in a lot of pain. i think today he had a plan to commit suicide. >> reporter: deputies say the 911 caller told them joseph may not want to live any more. >> his nurse arrived there and she seen him with a gun, and she ran out of the house and called the police. >> reporter: a hernando county with training in this kind of a situation got to the house first. >> i was in the driveway then the police officers surrounded the house. >> reporter: deputies say at first they tried a non lethal way to take joseph into custody. >> then i heard one gunshot, then i heard about 10 gunshots after that, then the medics went in. >> reporter: his friend tony acres saw them take joseph away to the hospital. >> i didn't expect this. i was with him on friday and he

>> reporter: on august 23rd he fell off his sail boat. no one heard the splash except his dog. >> he was barking ferociously. >> reporter: debbie heard the barking and came out to see what was going on. >> it was dark. i actually thought it was a manatee or something. >> i wasn't expecting it to be eddie, but it was eddie in the water facedown. >> reporter: this man, a former army ranger, ju water. >> i told debbie when they took him out of here that we probably wouldn't be seeing is eddie come daylight that we needed to contact his family. >> i was actually dead with no pulse for almost 30 minutes. >> reporter: shorter doesn't know how or why he survived. >> all i remember is like i was in space with no stars. it was just abyss. >> reporter: but shorter is thankful he was rescued.

coming around, but we are getting there, right? temperatures upper 70s to low 80s after highs today of 90 in tampa. winter haven hit 92 degrees. we should normally top out at 89 this time of the year. outside right now low 80s across the viewing area under partly cloudy to clear skies. satellite picture shows most of the moisture that we have been tracking has taken a brick that west to east wind pushing everything off to the east. now, it's still out there, the moisture. the only thing that is changing is the and that is a big thing, because when we get an easterly wind that means we can count on more sunshine, then the rains hold off until late afternoon, early evening. there is your forecast for friday, saturday, and into sunday. so you don't have to worry about starting your day dodging rain showers like we had the last couple of day, especially along the coast up north. right on through the afternoon maybe a coastal shower near lunchtime. sounds like july and august. and then late afternoon and early evening the storms get a

they try to back build across the coastal areas by late tomorrow night so this could again be some issues for high school football games. it is out of here by about midnight, then saturday morning and again on sunday morning sunny skies and dry conditions. then as we go to the afternoon the showers and the storms continue to pop and push back to the coast. now, the middle of next week believe it or not our rainfall totals may be on the increase thanks to what is going on with julia. we will talk about that in just a second but at least through saturday night into sunday think the heaviest storms will be interior. it will be really more like a typical july or august day minus the 92, 93. we will go 90 or 91. a lot of difference, right? now, here is a look at rainfall totals through tuesday. nothing to write home about. even wednesday and thursday i'm not sold that they are going to jump up significantly but there is a decent chance that whatever is going on with julia, and there won't be much. by the way, it is still a

that will force it down to the south. there's a decent chance our rains will start to go up. it won't be a tropical. it will just give us more moisture to work with. this one, not saying we're worried about it but it is something we have to keep our eyes on 10 to 11 days down the road. julia is going to wreak havoc across the southeast hanging out before coming back to florida. as you see, and we mentioned this at the top of the newscast, we've got a new tropical storm. the 11th named tropical storm. its name is karl. the center believes it is going to get up near hurricane status. i will tell you that most of the models curve this away from the u.s. the european has 50 individual members that run. eight of them bring this into the u.s. as a hurricane. so the odds are still rather low that it impacts the u.s. directly but it isn't zero. so it is something we will have

coach bruce arians go way back. they first met when winston was 12 years old. >> bruce used to hold local camps in birmingham that i used to attend. i met him a couple of times. one thing i remember is him showing me those super bowl rings, and i still haven't got one yet so i'm shooting for. that he really motivated me to go after a super bowl. he showed me that pittsburgh one, and it was so he really inspired me to go after a super bowl. >> great motivation there. first, julio jones, and now larry fitzgerald. vernon hargreaves is getting acquainted with the nfl pretty fast. solid day but against the falcons and against julio jones. he didn't guard him the entire game but when did he he limited him to just four catches. but like jones, arizona's larry fitzgerald stands 6' 3" tall.
