even through midday. by then the clouds will build and then we'll get the thunderstorms going around 4:00. 2:00 to 6:00 the time frame. they may come back across the coast. they will fire across the interior and could return to the coast. like yesterday. once it happens it could get gustier and stronger, we'll watch for. that we'll talk about futurecast, put it in motion and take you into the next seven days weatherwise, right now let's check the roads with janelle. we're checking with live drive camera, matt behind the wheel driving on i-4 heading into tampa. he's around the hard rock cafe. you can see traffic starting to pick up a little out there, this is a busy stretch of road but so far no crashes or breakdowns. a smooth ride all the way back from lakeland into tampa. let's check our cameras here, i- 275 in gandy in pinellas county looking great as well. no crashes or breakdowns. up to speed in both directions. we have a construction project to tell you about.

at 9:00, macdill avenue is closing in both directions at grenada just north of bay-to- bay. you have to use himes or dale mabry to work around this. of course you can use bay shore depending where you're coming from and where you're going but be prepared because again closed in both directions at grenada and this work is expected to last for the next two weeks. 5:32. folks across tampa and south florida are mourning the loss of miami marlins pitcher and bay area high jose fernandez. he died in a boating accident on sunday. abc action news reporter rodney dunigan live and alonso high school. fernandez had a major impact there. >> reporter: he did. friends and former teammates are hoping to hold a vigil at the high school for him later this week. this is truly where his career actually started. it was back in 2011 he helped the high school here win a state championship. former teammates tell us that

>> he dominated but had respect for everybody. and respect for the game. that's what i think made him an exciting player to watch. >> reporter: jose fernandez also was known as a major inspiration to people in the cuban community here having tried to defect from cuba three times before finally making it to the united states in 2008. >> as much as he was a great player, as much as a great pitcher, but was a great human being, and for that, a cuban american i feel very proud. >> reporter: another sad note, six days ago six days ago jose fernandez posted this to his instagram page of his pregnant girlfriend talking about the excitement of starting a new family with her. back out here live, again the sign in front of alonso high

proudly. definitely a touching moment for folks here at this high school. as for funeral arrangements they have yet to be set. another note to this story, jose fernandez had just become a u.s. citizen just last year in 2015. for now reporting live, rodney dunigan, abc action news. a seminole county father police jail and could stay there for weeks after police say he threw his baby, 4-month- old, over a fence and stripped down naked. michelle reeves said she knew something was wrong when she heard screaming from the apartment complex next to her home and found pants in her yard friday. then reeves spotted richard harris walking past. >> this way and went to my neighbor's yard. stripped down everything that he didn't -- what was left, and sat on his trash can. >> winter springs police arrested harris and realized the 4-month-old that he had been seen holding was missing. that is when the search began.

he landed face down in leaves. efforts taken to the hospital with scrapes and bruises but is ok. the father faces aggravated child abuse charges. harris is jailed on $25,000 bond and due in court next month. 5:35. the suspect in the washington state mall shooting will face a judge today. arjag setan accused of killing four women and one man in a macy's in the suburban seattle mall. he was captured saturday after a daylong manhunt. according to the seattle times it was not his first run-in with the law. they say he's been arrested three times for domestic violence after attacks on his stepfather and previous arrest for drunk driving. he immigrated from turkey. no word on a possible motive yet. authorities say the 20-year-old looked zombie-like when confronted. one person is dead, another in custody after a shooting at a las vegas starbucks. authorities say the suspect's credit card was denied at a drivethrough.

stormed inside with a weapon. police say he got into a fight with a customer inside and shows were fired. that victim taken to a local hospital but died. las vegas police say the suspect and victim didn't appear to know each other. the suspect told police he had a bomb in his backpack and they searched but didn't find explosives. to democracy 2016 -- hillary clinton running mate coming to the bay area today. tim kaine is holding a voter registration event in lakeland. you have to register by october 11th if you want to vote in presidential election. tim kaine is spending three days in florida encouraging people to register. he will travel to orlando this afternoon. tonight he and the human rights campaign will team up to hold a debate watch party. the first of three presidential debates between hillary clinton and donald trump is tonight. watch it here on your abc action news station starting 9:00. we you covered to also watch it live on the free mobile app or facebook page. most eyes will be on the

after twitter fight over the weekend. it started when dallas mavericks owner mark cuban tweeted that clinton's team had invited him to sit in the front row. he has been a vocal trump critic. trump tweeted back he had put gennifer flowers next to cuban. she had had an affair with bill clinton in the 1970s. the trump campaign denies saying this. a neighborhood held a rally in support of free speech rights, even those voting for hillary clinton. a man has been told to take signs down. >> he has been pushed around for exceeding a square foot limit. i don't think anything but it's a threat of free speech. >> the town says they don't care who the signs support but there are too many of them. he says the signs have been up

until this month that someone complained. he doesn't plan to remove signs and says he'll fight the fines, some neighbors support him. others say he's disturbing the peace. the 1% once again become a big talking point on the campaign trail but exactly who makes up the 1%. for perspective you have to make at least $390,000 to be in the top 1%. a new study reveals the wide gap between the 1%, how much they make and how much other 99% make. according to a new study income equality is the worst in new york and connecticut but florida ranks fifth in the country. the naples area has the biggest dissparity.

employees filed lawsuits against the bank. >> comes amid allegation that's employees opened accounts not authorized by customers. the employees say they were wrongfully terminated because they didn't meet their impossible quotas and made an example of "so that all other employees would learn they must engage in these fraudulent actions in order to meet the unrealistic sales quotas." keep watching this video. you're seeing boaters speeding away after they say an 11 foot long gator tried to take a bite out of their boat. the two men from brevard county say they are just happy to get away from the monster gator. the gator though did do some damage to their boat. like a movie. upper 70s now. mostly clear, clouds will begin

today. this morning we're dry as we start a monday. rainy monday morning, would be terrible, we're not going to have that but a rain monday afternoon, we're talking about more rain chances coming back. certainly not in our dry season yet. we start to get cold fronts moving through and cool air. not soon though. we're in the upper 70 to low 80s. feels warm, feels humid and it will be hot this afternoon once again with temperatures around 90 degrees. those heat index values or the feels-like temperature climbing well into enough cast puts this in motion and you can see cloud cover bubbling up so by lunchtime we're seeing that, a smattering of showers but will take the afternoon heating to get the thunderstorms going. thunderstorms don't steer themselves. we depend on upper level winds and what is happening with the atmosphere. so very weak steering currents. what that means for the thunderstorms that do develop, they will tend to be erratic and move rather slow and that usually means a lot of rainfall in a short period of time in

potentially developing today. this doesn't go past 7:00 but we'll watch for the potential of some of the storms to back up and go back to the coast later on this evening. tropics nothing going on except this feature here. that is the only game in town now. that is the one we're watching here. winds 30 miles per hour, not a depression yet. we'll need stronger winds for that a at 39 but the models locking in that will be messy. it's a matter of where it's headed. we spaghetti plots, i'll show that you in the next hour. 86 for st. pete this afternoon. 90 tampa which is a couple of degrees above average but not too far away from where we should be this time of year. rain chances holding 40%. a westerly wind developing by tomorrow and mid-week. that is important because that means the storms will tend to fire a little further east and that's like the music playing when the camera starts moving. it's like at the oscars.

oak tree becomes a target of a vandal a. >> it was set on fire after auburn's win this weekend. they were replant the last year after poisoned by an alabama fan several years ago. a 29-year-old man is under arrest and charged with 24 most recent incident. tampa bay buccaneers disappointed fans who braved the weather delay. bucs had one last chance to win their home opener but couldn't get that final touchdown they needed. quarterback jameis winston trimmed the deficit to five points on mike evans with just over two minutes left. following a rams punt and delay of game due to lightning winston drove the bucs to the rams 15 only to come up short twice in the end zone. >> defense did a great job getting us the ball back. great situation for us. i just got to complete the football. i missed too many targets. moments like that you have to make those completions.

we will be, in the upper 70s now. eventually we'll get back into the 90s, it will feel close to 100 with the humidity. no big changes as i see it now, 86 for the -- by the time we get to lunch with clouds already billowing up. then the afternoon storms will be with us around 2:00 and thereafter. perhaps continuing into the evening with more storms on the way for tomorrow. some changes though and where they will develop, we'll talk more about that and economic in on the tropics again in next hour. 5:53. hundreds of dogs and owners hit the streets of lima, peru over the weekend, teeth up for a race. the winner got a year's worth of free dog food. a california woman who accidentally received nearly $5,000 in cash with her domino's order now has a generous reward for returning the money. last tuesday selina ava lows ordered chicken wings and found

grave that used to be in biblical times meaning action -- the bodies were actually put on the stone. >> the project is expected to cost more than $50 million. it's still though just a temporary fix. the mountain of the dead as it's known will eventually need even more space. 5:55. st. petersburg is getting a new art museum and this afternoon we expect to learn more about what we'll see next year. these are exterior of the james museum of western and wildlife art. opening on central avenue next fall. the museum will feature hundreds of works of art acquired by tom and mary james over the past 50 years. coming up -- we are just hours away from the first presidential debate. it's expected to be the most watched in history. we've got a look at what to expect. >> saying goodbye to a golfing great. so many still stunned by news of the death of arnold palmer.

rocking the sports world. the other loss of golfing great arnold palmer. first traffic and weather together. any problems yet? >> it's been so good. everyone is behaving, driving carefully, so no crashes or breakdowns. we're starting pretty quiet weatherwise. by the afternoon though back into some thunderstorms. we'll be talking more about that and then the tropical wave as well. this one will continue to head to the west. next several days. as we check in on the upper 70s by 10:00. back around 83. humidity makes it feel warmer. rain chances still around 40%. across our area though, we have colder air up top. in the atmosphere. usually that will tend to get the thunderstorms that do develop a little stronger. we had that yesterday as they marched back towards the coast. we'll watch it as we head into 4:00, 7:00, peaking by then with temperatures in the 80s.
