now to those massive wildfires out west forcing hundreds of people out of their hopes and, ginger, you've been following all of that. >> they've been burning and it's hot out there. the santa cruz beach boardwalk, we can see that picture so you can get an image, almost looks volcanic, that is the loma fire now burning more than 2,200 acres, about 10% contained at last update so that area, this is what is significant about it. not only is it hot and dry but they haven't had a fire in 15 years so there's all that dry fuel just ready to burn. that plus the geography has made it difficult to fight the fire. 11 large wildfire, seven in central and northern california. at this point we had santa ana winds not helping. the offshore, that makes heat, but good news is we've got slightly cooler air coming in, a little dip in the jet stream so you guys, we'll be still talking about fire, it burns whether cool or hot but a little help for the firefighters. >> it does help. all right, ginger, thank you. now to a deadly police

protests overnight and raising questions after an officer opened fire on a man outside a strip mall just outside of san diego. abc's matt gutman is on the scene with the latest on this ongoing investigation. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. police now saying that an african-american man who was shot right around here was unarmed when an officer shot him multiple times. now, the investigation is still ongoing but police have released that single frame of cell phone video taken by a bystander. they say something out of his pocket and taking what ace threatening stance against police. that shooting triggering near immediate protests here in el cajon at the police station down the street. hundreds of people shouting no justice, no peace. now, police apparently originally got the call from a woman claiming to be his sister. she was saying he was not acting like himself. that he was walking in and out of traffic and she allegedly warned them that he was mentally ill. that he was unarmed and that he

robin. >> that investigation just under way. thank you. we'll get the latest on last week's bombings in new york and new jersey. they released this new image as they still for two men on the scene still and the bomber's father sat down with brian ross. good morning, brian. >> good morning, george. the mystery deepens about the identities of those two men being sought by the fbi. if they were just innocent witnesses, why haven't they come forward? all this as the suspect's father gives his first full tv interview with sur details about his son and the fbi. it's been one week this morning since the fbi first went public looking for the two men. the new images show them with the colorful piece of luggage they walked off with. apparently unaware the pressure cooker they left behind was one of the homemade bombs. you don't know these two men in no. >> they're not friends of your son? >> never saw them. >> reporter: he tells abc news this morning he does not

closely at some of the radical social media posts shared by the suspect's older sister who he stayed with in pakistan, rahami was shocked when we showed him what was on his daughter's page. have you ever talked to her about any of this? >> no, this is the first time i saw that. >> reporter: the father also told abc news one of the fbi agents present when his son was shot and captured last week was the same agent who two years earlier had investigated his son as a possible terrorist and conclude ahmad that he was no terror threat. so you think they should have interviewed. >> yes, a hundred per sflents and they never did. >> no. >> the fbi says the agent conducted a thorough investigation even after the father recanted his original claims about his son, something the father disputes. as for his son, doctors have told him ahmad is still in bad shape suffering from what he called massive infections after being shot, his prognosis still uncertain. >> brian, at the start officials seemed pretty sure those men were not involved.

questions. >> they don't understand why they haven't come forward. why haven't they come forward if they are innocent? >> brian ross, thanks very much. now we have the latest on the boat crash that killed miami marlins pitcher jose fernandez. and two of his friends. police say fernandez was at a bar before the crash and text messages suggest he may have been upset about something. abc's steve osunsami has new details. steve, what do authorities think happened in those last hours? >> reporter: well, robin, investigators are still trying to piece together the chain of crash. but it's becoming very clear that fernandez and his friends were out very late. authorities are blaming high speed for the crash that sent jose fernandez's speedboat hurling into these rocks early sunday. >> they've got a capsized vessel by the way. >> reporter: but this morning friends are revealing that for some reason the marlins ace pitcher was very upset before the accident and these text messages from earlier in the

we are back now with "gma investigates." this morning abc news learned consumer product safety commission is issuing a warning about certain top loading samsung washing machines after consumers reported explosions. the christipsc is working on a and we have details with benitez. >> reporter: the cpsc says it involved certain samsung washing machines made between march 2011 and april 2016. the agency tells abc news they are working with samsung on a remedy that will help ensure that there are no further incidents, now take a look at this. >> code red. >> reporter: it's touted as a parent's life saver. kristen bell showing off one of samsung's top loading washing machines in a 2015 ad.

"gma investigates" learning 21 people since early last year

were there, and you really felt it. you know, we felt it and knew it when we were doing it. we just -- you have this sort of extra added thing in the back of your head going, you know, the families are going to see this movie so you really want to be careful and there's no carelessness going foo making a film like that when you know the families are watching and then when you actually have the experience and you see that they just sort of have this moment to kind sort of feels like, you know, a sort of memoriam to these people who really saved each other. there was some real heroes on that rig. it's surprising that more did not die because they were so there for each other. >> when you watch the film you're thinking, oh, my gosh. i mean it's tragic that 11 lost their lives but so many more could have and mark's character

>> i think -- yeah, he was the last one off the rig, mike williams but the thing i think that pete did that's really amazing about this movie because, you know, i read the script. i know the story and then i watched the movie and i was completely engaged which is rare when you're making movies and i think pete did this amazing job of sort of -- you feel like you're in -- it's full on, you know, you're in -- it's just almost le anxiety like i think people will really get an experience watching this movie that just goes -- oh, my god, you know. >> can we say this about you. you have always been a joy to watch. always very talented but you have blossomed. [ applause ] but i just felt that museum is such an incredible testament to some of the bad stuff that has gone on in this country's history and we need to know what went wrong in order to get things right and that's what i feel that museum represents. >> absolutely, 100%. i agree with you. [ applause ] and something that you did get right is this film. i mean it's such a heartwarming film. it really is. but you learned how to play chess in this film from the master himself. >> i did. >> from the character you played. i'm curious when you learn to play chess from the guy who you're playing, are you as good as he is now? >> no.

no, my self-esteem remained very low while playing robert katende who i play in the film at chess but he's incredible. not only did he teach me how to play but how to teach it which is a pretty complicated thing. >> i got my board set up in my dressing room after the show. give me a lesson. >> are you throwing down right now? >> i need some help. you can beat me. that's what i'm saying. and the young lady, phiona, is it true this is the first movie she's seen in her own life story. >> well, i -- whi doing the film we shot it in katwe and madina sat next to me. her talons clawing in my arm, oh. and then at one point she turred to me and said is that what we are doing? and i suddenly realize it was the first time she had ever seen a movie on the big screen halfway through shooting a movie for disney. >> and it was about her life. >> amazing.

good morning. wednesday. we're just about finished with this morning rush hour. we have the crash we're following here. this is i-75 northbound, the frontage road to get to the selmon expressway. you can see the crash blocking one of the lanes, seeing a slowdown on the access road but not affecting 75 too much. 301 seems to be moving fine there. a slowdown in largo, eastbound ulmerton road before 66th street give yourself extra time for that. heads up, construction in south tampa, on henderson boulevard, two inside lanes taken away, and we're congested from dale mabry down to westshore, also moving a little slow so give yourself extra time. you may want to take lois instead. our camera looking
