always when you talk about intensification. the winds are 125 miles per hour. still wreaking havoc in cuba. as it pushes to the north and west it will gain a healthier environment. that will allow it to intensify. it will be back to category 4 status in the next 1 to 24 hours, strengthening through the bahamas and eventually making a bee line for the peninsula. we look for a i'm not convinced about that. if i am on the east coast of florida, i'm preparing for a landfall of a category 3 or category 4 storm. it's just too close. we are talking 25, 30 miles and we are not good as far as the forecast errs to this period. when you have a cat 4 offshore like that, you must prepare for the worsest. the official -- worst.

paralleling the coast. thursday night, i paused it, not just because we have a cat 4 east of florida but i think this will be the impacts. beginning thursday night into friday. we are talking about polk county, highlands county. you are the ones that will experience the worst of it as far as the winds as the track is now. 40 to 60 miles per hour winds thursday into friday because of that parallel. you see that line close to the coast and then heading up friday across the northeastern part of the state. these are the watches and warnings but we focus in on our counties. polk and highlands county thursday night and into friday, 40 to 60 miles per hour winds. power out tables, if you are watching from lake wales, lakeland, place sick lakes, you

up. they are lining up at gas stations to fill their tanks and flocking to atms for cash. credit and debit cards won't work if there is no power. polk county could experience some of the worse of matthew. the school district plans to make a decision on whether they will cancel school tomorrow or friday if the hurricane shifts a little west, some polk county schools would serve as hurricane shelters. we will get an update later this morning. download the abc news mobile announcement is made. this is the destruction that hurricane matthew is leaving behind. streets in haiti look like rivers. roofs are lifted off and trees are down all over the place. the communication infrastructure is wiped out. the death toll is at 11 but that is expected to rise. some people in the bay area are preparing to go to haiti to

we will talk about our local forecast. the showers and storms we had

do with matthew. same today. easterly flow bringing plenty of moisture and hot conditions. the last couple of days -- what happened to october. we had heat index values of 95 to 105. we will get hot today. upper 80s. rain chance at 40%. after today, then, we have to, of course, factor in matthew especially thursday night into friday when we pick up the winds as the storm heads to the north and west. 1 the 25 -- 125 miles per hour winds through the ban hamas then impacting our area. the inland areas could experience tropical storm force winds thursday and into friday as well. we will break it down for you and give you more updates on the winds and the model uncertainty at this hour and why it could play a huge role on how this pans out. guys? >> thanks, ivan.

hackers could target medical devices. johnson and johnson says the insulin pumps are vulnerable but says the risk is low. a company says the one touch insulin pump has a bug that could make it a cyber security risk. they believe a hacker could break into the pump and cause a patient to overdose. they say as far as they know no one has tried to hack the pumps. as you drive to work or school, make sure you pay extra and biking to school this morning. today is international walk or bike to school day. dozens of bay area schools are participating. they want to make sure that kids riding bikes are wearing their helmets and those walking are using crosswalks. a local 12-year-old is under arrest charged with making threats to his school. the connection this could have to the creepy clown scare going

an update on hurricane matthew still chunk through the caribbean. it will be a while before it gets to us. thursday night the effects will begin in the form of gusty winds and we have the tropical storm watches posted for polk and highlands own. out the door, the morning commute looks dry.

thunderstorms. temperature around 89. today's rain not associated with matthew. we will talk about that in a second. here is the latest from the nhc. 125 miles per hour winds despite the fact this has gone through rain. now that it's over water, instead of 3 a cat 4 developing going through the bahamas later today and into tonight. there is the position by thursday specifically, 130 miles per hour wind. the hurricane force winds extend out 40 miles. the position you see here is exactly 40 miles. we are right on the edge of getting those deaths strucktive winds on the coast of florida. a bit of a shift to the west. even 5 to 10 miles will make a big difference. it will make a landfall instead of paralleling the coast which is the official forecast for now heading to the north. the latest european model

have it going inland. keep that in mind. this forecast may change once again. when it gets this close to the coast, we are looking at a last minute turn to the north so it doesn't make landfall. by then, by thursday night, because it's closest pass to us, that's when the strong winds will begin, of course not only for the coast where hurricane watches are posted, hurricane warnings to the south but the yellow are tropical storm watches for polk and highland county. 0 to 60 miles per hour winds thursday -- 40 to 60 miles per hour winds thursday into friday. watch what happens with the rainfall. as this begins to me of in, this is today, showers and storms well out ahead of the storm. nothing to worry about there. then the outer rain bands move in thursday night and into friday. notice pretty compact here. we are looking at a very sharp

winds. you go further inland, out of the rainfall. then closer to the coast not raining at all. tampa, st. pete, 25 to 30 miles per hour wind gusts thursday and especially into friday as it heads to the north with the return wind. for polk and highlands county, tropical storm watch tonight then -- excuse me, thursday into the day on friday for 40 to 60 miles breaking it down into thursday night, that's when things will turn not only downhill for the east coast but for us as well. then the hurricane force winds remaining out along 95. another update in a few minutes. good morning, everybody. a couple of crashes we are keeping our eye on. the first one up in the wesley chapel area, northbound bruise b. downs at state route 56. one lane is blocked. traffic indicators are in the

cleared to the side. they are clearing this crash southbound u.s. 41 at 73rd street east. this is in palmetto t. a little slow down here in the southbound lanes on u.s. 41. this crash just south of 275. that was in the red. and your drive on the veterans is looking great. better than yesterday. we had a crash causing over a hour delay on the veterans. right now we are in 17 minutes -- green, 17 minutes. a dream vacation aboard a carnival cruise ship turned sour for thousands. passengers are docked in new york city because of deadly hurricane matthew. saturday night passengers got an e-mail hours before they were supposed to set sail from baltimore to the bahamas saying

when the ship docked yesterday, they were told they wouldn't go to canada. they are docked on the hudson. passengers want their money back. >> we just want to go home at this point. there is nothing they could do to make this cruise, if you want to call it a cruise better. >> the ship is scheduled to head back to baltimore tonight. carnival is giving guests $250 to spend on board and half off a future cruise. many say of taking carnival up on the offer. breaking news just in. no bell committee awarding the nobel prize in chemistry to three men for developing the smallest machines. the men contributing significantly to the development of molecule sized machines which one day the no

powerful hurricane matthew bringing its furry to the east coast after tearing through haiti. >> storm warnings and watches that you need to know about so you are ready. team coverage from the latest updates on the storm's path. how families are preparing for the worse. the powerful storm is capable of this type of devastation and it is getting closer to florida. >> we are expecting to feel the impact in the bay area as soon as tomorrow night. by this time tomorrow night we should prepare for tropical storm force winds. with ivan cabrera standing by where the storm is and where it's heading. >> the latest advisory, dealing with a potent storm, cat 3. 125 miles per hour winds north of the eastern tip of cuba, over waters. we are expecting the 125 to go up in the next several hours throughout today back to a category 4 hurricane. as that is happening, as it is strengthening, it's rolling through the bahamas and making a pass at us here, close to the eastern part of the state.

better news for some areas across the northeast but even the carolinas have to watch it closely. this track has been trending further and further west. a little more and we are looking at a landfall here. some of the models are indicating that. let's track it for you as it heads into the bahamas between a 3 and 4, 130 miles per hour winds thursday night east essentially of florida within a few miles looking at hurricane foe for us in that position, that would mean that highlands and polk county would be experiencing tropical storm force winds thursday night and through friday. normally you get the intense winds in a short amount of time and the storm weakens. this track has it paralleling the coast so it wouldn't weaken. we will be on an extended period of strong winds. there are the watches and

tropical storm watch thursday night and into the day on friday. those would be the worst effects so far as our area. we will talk about the rainfall as well. we are not going to get the rain that hated and cuba got -- haiti and cuba got but we will get some. continuing our coverage on hurricane matthew, families up and down the east coast including florida are getting ready for impact. time is running out to get sand feel -- before we feel the impact of the storm. >> we will hear from polk county if they close schools north storm and in palm beach they will decide if people should evacuate. lindsay is keeping track. >> reporter: two women are stuck in their hotel at the atlantis. for whatever reason they

to wet roads and winds. we hoped to have a live picture. but it is going in and out as matthew makes its way to the island nation. time is running out for people to prepare. we have seen all week people stocking up, boarding up and gassing up. evacuations in the bahamas started monday. i can tell you this, the main airport closes at 11:00 this morning. anyone without a ticket including two women storm wherever they are. >> i am concerned. i don't want to get stuck here. i have to go back-to-work monday. >> she and a friend are visiting the atlantis resort. the hotel said people will take shelter in the ballroom during the storm. we are watching the video feeds and will bring you anything new when we get it. back to you. >> thanks, lindsay. many are topping off the tanks. good advice ahead of a storm.

gas. we have the challenges that people are facing. >> reporter: the struggle is real for people looking for gas on the palm beach and treasure coast. many telling us that they are driving for miles finding gas pumps which are out of order. down the road from here in jupiter, we found a mobile with a tanker truck parked outside. cars were lining up waiting to be waiting for gas. she heard there was a gas station in hope sound and was planning to drive up. luckily she found this station because as she was pulling up, her car stalled. >> i have been calling and i was hoping to try to make it to hope sound where they told me there might be gas. good luck i happened to see the truck. yeah. >> reporter: during times of need it's reported that gas

prices. because there is a state of emergency in florida, there is a price gouging hotline that people can call if they feel like they are being taken advantage of. people in desoto county are dealing with severe flooding and bracing for more. pounding rain washed away a main road trapping six families in their homes. 20 don't have running water. port o potties. they are trying to figure out though avoid the situation getting worse. president obama will not be speaking at usf today. the white house is postponing his trip because of hurricane matthew. he planned to talk about the progress the affordable care act has made. the white house is saying they are hoping to reschedule the trip to tampa and a campaign stop in miami for hillary clinton as soon as the impact of matthew is determined.

today so one million people will leave the coast ahead of hurricane matthew. governor halley says state officials will reverse lanes on major evacuation routes. it would be the first major evacuation in south carolina since hurricane floyd in 1999 when the governor at the time did not reverse the lanes and interstate 26 basically turned into a parking lot. several u.s. airlines are waiving the change fees for travelers that want to change flights because matthew. flights to the caribbean including cuba and haiti are being canceled. this video out of miami international, american, united adding destinations to their changes too waivers. good morning, everybody. this is the time where we start to see people tapping their brakes on i-275. this is what it looks like around busch. a little slow down here.

checking your drive across the bridges, not bad. we are still in the green on the howard frankland. six minutes from st. pete into tampa. nine minutes on the courtney campbell. seven minutes to cross the gandy bridge. we are making phone calls right now to find out more about the man shot and killed by a hillsborough county deputy. so far deputies have notified the man who witnesses say through a brick at deputy. it started when authorities say the man was involved in a three- car crash in riverview and took off and tried to carjack three people. when that failed, he reportedly tried to break into several homes to hide from deputies. one of the homeowners said he watched the man throw a brick at the deputy's head and the deputy fired his weapon. >> he went right to the cop car. he was trying to get out. barely had the door open. that's when he threw the brick

cop would be behind his window. >> that deputy, stewart gray, a 24 year veteran shot and killed the man. investigators are trying to find out more about the man and why he was desperate to get away. new this morning, pasco county sheriff's office is investigating a death investigation in hudson. deputies say they found two people deed inside. they are identified as claudette good suicide but they are investigating. in democracy 2016, vice presidential candidates tim kaine and mike pence battled it out. who won? this poll finds 48% say republican pence one compared to 42% for tim kaine. >> iraq has been overrun by isis because hillary clinton failed to renegotiate --

down to "good morning america." >> we start off with a smelly situation in a palm harbor neighborhood that will linger for a few more days. county crews have a raw sewage leak under control but it needs to be cleaned up. thousands of gallons gushed from a opening, about 12 hours' worth. the manatee county sheriff's office is looking for the man that robbed a fidelity bank in bradenton. he implied he demanded cash. this happened at 53rd avenue east near 30th street. he got away with an undisclosed amount of money. if you recognize the man, call the manatee sheriff's office. several civic groups will hold a protest outside of donald trump's campaign office in tampa. they want to highlight his history of sexist statements against women. protests will start at 10:00 this morning.

some medical marijuana patients to get prescription filled even if voters approve medicinal pot next month. commissioners are voted to ban them from opening for 180 days until they can see the impact of the businesses. dispensaries are open right now in tampa and clearwater. starting today, the farmer's market will be back open in tampa. they open the first wednesday of every until march. it's a way for transit riders to buy healthy produce. >> tampa bay bucs will renovate sulfur springs center. they will read to kids and lead them through football drills. meteorologist ivan cabrera is showing us the path of

the east coast of florida. we will get the full forecast in a minute. >> first, how to prepare. we are seeing stores run out of essential supplies in south florida. ashley yore is live at the lowe's in south tampa. we have a run down of items to check even if we have them at home. >> reporter: that's right, deiah. we know the basics. like make sure that you have water on hand, you want to have bread and there are some things that you have in your home but you need to give them a once over to make sure that they are ready, like batteries. i am with josh at lowe's. you need to check and make sure batteries are good? >> absolutely. some may sit around. look for corrosion build up or acid build up on top. test them. don't get caught in a situation where they are not working. >> make sure that you have gas.

sure you have enough gas to run generators. >> correct. have the gas readily available. they run out in times like this. definitely have gas on hand. >> and quickly talk to me about keeping your devices charged. you have this bigger power station here, a little expensive. you have something smaller that can work in a pinch. >> i have an example of one. it has a u.s. b port on the side to -- usb port to your cell phone devices letter and it acts as a flashlight. something handy. >> you want to make sure that you have those things ready to go. we want to turn things over to ivan for the latest on the track. ivan, where is the storm right now? >> it's over northern cuba, back over the open water and will intensify. great advice there. this will be a power outage kind of storm. i will show you the rain tallies in a second.

because we will get tropical storm force winds across the tampa bay area, specifically polk and highlands county. there is the track to the north and west becoming a category 4 hurricane through the bahamas. a disaster for some of the islands then heading into florida close to making landfall. this will get better organized, not that it's not now. 125 miles per hour winds but we are thinking 130, 135 eventually as it tracks over the warm waters of the nothing to interrupt the structure as far as wind sheer. this should be steady as she goes to the north and west. there it is at 130 miles per hour winds wednesday night through the bahamas. worst case for them. that is the time period. it continues heading to the north and west typically with a normal storm you get a landfall here. the atmosphere risks are -- atmospherics are building up.

would be preparing for a cat 4 landfall. it is so close. this would be thursday night, 130 miles per hour winds. the winds don't extend out forever. they extend 40 miles. that is the wind field. it will be destructive. further out, 160 to 180 we have tropical storm force winds and will impact our area unless this shifts further to the west. we have to go with the track that we have for now. it is the european and american model this within five miles of the coastline. it will be a close call. obviously if you are within five miles they are going to get into hurricane conditions across the coast which is why we have the hurricane watches and warnings. for us, it's 40 to 60 miles per hour winds. that is enough to cause power outages for an extended period. again, it's moving on the coast, not in. this means thursday night

and highlands county. computer model forecast, the american catching up with the european. your pee i don't know had this a while ago. there it is as it head's up to the north and west and within -- kissing the coastline, making a technical landfall then head's up into saturday across the carolinas. the rest of the computer model forecast, some are very confused as you can see. this is a mess here. the important part for us would be this track here and all of them now in agreement coming a lot closer than we talked about last week. the forecast, as we talk about the rain bands, they continue to move in, not today but tonight heading into friday. we will be on the drier side of the storm which means 6 to 8 inches for the coast. 4 to 6 inches for parts of the county. the further away less rainfall. today not matthew but afternoon storms with temperatures around
