11:01 pm
where shopping is a pleasure. all new at 11, more than one and half million floridians under evacuation right now. more than 1000 flights canceled and forth forth lauderdale airport announcing it's closing at 10:00 a.m. good eveni join us. >> florida preparing for what could be the most devastating storms to it had the state in the decades. hurricane matthew. we're spread out across the state. where schools have already been canceled. plus, reporter ryan is in vino beach where businesses are already seeing the calm before the storm. but we begin with chief meteorologist dennis phillips. i'll tell you what. this will probably be looked at
11:02 pm
east side of the state. every now and again, they get a storm like this. since the mid-1800s there has never been a storm this powerful to hit central florida around day toe in a, down to mel burn, over to the cape. and that is what we're looking at the right now. clearly getting better organized. still winds are 115 miles per hour. but this pressure beginning to drop. i have no doubt tomorrow morning these winds are going to be higher as this storm getting stronger. and there's a pretty good chance this will become a category 4 hurricane. now, locally, what are we looking senate exactly the same -- looking at? exactly the same as a few hours ago. if you ebb are the ewe peen i can't gps models have been saying that for a last couple day. so if you live in polk county,
11:03 pm
you can expect powerful winds tomorrow night into friday. in my mind, you'll have some issues. there will be some trees coming down. 60-65. that's some serious winds. but the yellow color. that is a tropical storm watch. that means it might be an issue. if things start to change a little bit more. then winds could be a little bit cle. forecast. and we all know, the tropics can be kind of fickle. it can happen, so that's why a watch is in effect. but i still think most of the bay area from polk county west will see winds of about 35-45. maybe gusting a little bit higher. this is the updated track. pretty much exactly what the track was showing on eastern sections of the state earlier on today. it has not changed. meaning, winds of category 4
11:04 pm
of the state. folks, if this happens, i believe it will, we are looking at a devastating hurricane on the east coast. this is one of our models and i think it's right on the money. right up the east side of the state. up near jacksonville, with winds easily over 100 miles an hour in those areas. the probability of tropical storm force winds this our area, at about 50-60%. but much higher on the east side of the state. so again, tropical storm warnings interior. tropical storm watches closer a major hurricane. may be the strongest every arriving later tomorrow into early friday. i'll time all of that out for you coming up. and one tampa woman. stuck in the bahamas with no way out. because she department get out. before the airports closed there. now show will have to stay in the shelter located in the resort. she's staying the until hurricane matthew passes. >> hopefully it passes by quickly. nobody is sure right now how

11:16 pm
one of the more devastating hurricanes we have seen since andrew. think about that. i mean, this is the real deal. and it's going to cover a huge area of the east coast. you look outside local he right now, we a few showers, a couple storms this evening. otherwise quiet. a beautiful sunset there. thank you, you look out to the west tomorrow, you're going to see some very pleasant weather. you look out to the east, it is anhe major hurricane. and probably a category 4 hurricane. there's a look at tye tan doppler radar right now. you look out to the southeast, you're beginning to see some of the bans from hurricane matthew coming in. they will not impact us tonight. we'll not get anything tomorrow. until late tomorrow evening, overnight, and first thing on friday. the first half of the day on friday, that's when we're going to see our heaviest winds across the area.
11:17 pm
same thing today, this moisture had nothing to do with matthew and overnight tonight, with part my cloudy to clear skies. you'll be waking up to dry conditions. most of thursday will be dry. late afternoon storms, again, may be some of the outer moisture. not even the bans. but maybe the outer moisture. late tomorrow afternoon and right on through the evening. but then, obviously, friday morning, this is what we're concerned about. overnight thursday, into friday morning, rpm run. that's the forecast model we're using. with the center pretty much straddling the coast. moving right up the eastern side of the state. and truthfully, i think it's going to. we are going to be looking at 120-130-mile an hour winds. maybe around west palm or maybe west palm. straight up from jacksonville. since the mid-1800s.
11:18 pm
for us, thursday night into friday, interior, poke county, highlands county. winds, sustained winds of 40-60 miles aen hour. higher gusts than that. because of that, we could see some damage. i think there is going to be some damage closer to that center. probably some trees down. if you live in poke county, even -- polk county, even eastern hillsborough county p you might want to bring in your lawn furniture, secure stuff down. because it is go rather gusty. but severe damage along the atlantic coast. i hesitate to use the word catastrophic, but that might be a word we'll be looking back at the. because we are so hopeful. and a lot of people have evacuated. but you know there will be a lot that won't. tropical storm warnings in orange. tropical storm watches for the rest of bay area. there it is. getting better organized. you can see the eye becoming more clear. the pressure will be dropping overnight. i think you'll be waking up to
11:19 pm
1:25 or maybe 1:30 to make it a category 4 hurricane. and that's what the hurricane center predicting as well. long range, eventually track back to the south. there's been a lot of hype about that. so many days we have to look at that. and i seriously doubt it's going to pose any problem whatsoever after we get there this. this is the story. right here. category 4. moving up the coast. wis even up around jacksonville. down that jacksonville has never been hit by a major hurricane? that will probably change by friday evening. it moves up the coast, for us, we're on the backside,s on the dry side. we're not looking for a ton of rain. but some gusty winds. if you live closer to the center, you're going to get more wind. waves and surge will be an issue. waves as high as 30-35 feet
11:20 pm
burn, merritt island, right on up to daytona. in terms of wind, hurricane force winds extend about 40 miles out from the center. but the heaviest wind, the winds that will cause most of the damage only extend about 15 miles. so this is not necessarily going to be a catastrophic area of 50-07-mile the. there will be an area about 10- 15 miles. that w and as you see, the tropical storm force winds. certainly right on the fringe of it. if you live along the coast. unless there's a big track change, you don't have the much to worry about. gusting a little higher and then again, as it pulls away by friday evening. it takes the wind along with it. these are some numbers that are going to frighten some folks. through friday morning, winds maybe gusts. gusts. to maybe 45 miles an hour.
11:21 pm
close to 100 miles aen hour. for us -- an hour, for us us stained about 20-30. maybe some gusts up to 50 and higher in eastern polk county and things begin to wind down later friday into saturday. one more look of hurricane protection in terms of where the wind will be heaviest. right along the immediate coastline. notice at this point in time the threat of hurricane force winds in at area, near 0. a look at florida's most accurate seven day forecast. the in rolls through by friday. and then by saturday morning, it actually exits. and believe it or not, the session half of the weekend will be beautiful. morning lows upper 60s. be sure to check out ivan first thing tomorrow morning with the latest on matthew. all right. thank you. is there a silver lining to the bucs defense? t. k. thinks so. and that story is next in
