live, from the station taking action for you, this is abc action news. now at 6:00, breaking news. a deadly crash causing traffic issues where two major interstates meets. and closing down the interchange from i-4 to southbound 275 heading into downtown. good morning. thanks for waking up with abc. i'm dan. >> good morning. we're tracking the impact this crash is hav drivers are being detoured. we want to get straight to janelle for a look at what's going on out there. >> yeah. if you haven't left the house yet, you want to avoid i-4 westbound. take a look at the backup created here because of that closure to get onto southbound 275. we also have our live drive camera stuck out there in this traffic jam. we're seeing about a half an hour delay to get from 75 to 275 on i-4. traffic just at a standstill. now, since you can't go

having to get off at mlk and take florida back around. you can also consider taking the connecter to the expressway and take that into downtown if that is where you are going. take a look at this. the average speed right now, 17 miles an hour to get from 75 to 275. the good news, the other interstates looking great. 75 southbound in the green, and 275 over in pinellas. 68 the average speed there. all right. we'll check your forecast, n 70s. 60s, as well. still do, in fact. most of us in the 70s, and we're all going to warm up. once again, higher humidity this afternoon so that 88 will feel more like 92 through the afternoon. just some spotty showers. 10% rain chance. that would be about it. then increasing rain chances coming up for the weekend. we'll future cast that out for you in just a few minutes. >> thanks, ivan. time now is 6:01.

toll road over gandy boulevard. take a look. this is what gandy boulevard in tampa looks like right now. >> this is what the elevated lane would look like leading to the expressway. abc action news reporter rodney is live right now with some concerns about this project. well, a number of business owners in this area are concerned about what this road project could mean for their bottom lines. in fact, i spoke with one business owner who was pretty much concerned about this. hit him hard. >> it took 30, 40% of my sales right off the top. >> and this project now aims to move all of the traffic off of gandy boulevard in tampa, especially during rush hour, by moving it to an elevated toll road. construction is expected to bring a few added traffic headaches before finally bringing some relief that it promises. drivers tell us they are ready

it's terrible. it's bumper to bumper. if i wasn't born and raised down here, i wouldn't know all the back streets to get around it, but to anybody that has to sit on gandy to commute, i definitely feel bad for them. >> and the elevated lanes will run for 1.6 miles from the end of the gandy bridge connecting. now, especially connecting -- essentially connecting brandon to u.s. 19 nonstop. back out here live this morning, of businesses will have to pack their patience. this construction project is expected to last about three years. for now, reporting live in tampa, rodney, abc action news. all right. we 're getting our first look at the man accused of killing a hillsboro county high school student and driving away. this is nicholas constantino. we are also getting word he just posted bonds and being released from jail. the clearwater man hit and killed 17-year-old ashley.

on hillsboro avenue when she was hit. grief counselors have been at her school. two major cases headed to court today, including the man accused of kidnapping a lakeland girl. west wild hogs is waking up in a jail cell. investigators extradited him yesterday from tennessee. they say that's where he brought a four-year-old girl, rebecca lewis, after abducting her from her home nearly a week ago. lewis is now home safe with her man accused of crashing his truck into a lakeland home killing a woman inside is set to face charges. investigators say this man here, 24-year-old ryan, plowed into that home right into the guest bedroom, hitting janice. the woman who was beloved in her community died instantly yesterday morning. investigators say after the crash, he tried to walk home. they charged him with dui manslaughter -- excuse me,allant

manslaughter in 2009 chl he pleaded no contest to dui causing injury. a pinellas county deputy is off the job and facing charges after investigators say he pawned his service weapon. authorities say steven smith sold his glok ..45 caliber pistol for $250 to the silver dollar pawnshop in newport richey. he stole a bottle of hydrocodone that he was supposed to destroy. new this morning, airlines are taking extra steps to prevent a disaster in case a passenger's phone battery catches fire evacuate a southwest airlines flight in kentucky when a passenger's phone started smoking even though the phone was turned off. it was one of the recalled samsung galaxy note 7 phones. now, at least three u.s. airlines are now adding new fire containment bags to flights. if a device sparks and the fire can't be put out. in democracy 2016, donald trump doubling down on his claim that he never sexually assaulted any women, and he's still getting backing from some vocal supporters.

the presidential candidate addressed the claims during a rally in west palm beach yesterday. four women now say trump made unwanted advances on them. trump says there is evidence to prove his accusers are lying, and he'll release that at a later date. he called the whole thing a spears that benefits hilary clinton. >> i will not allow the clinton machine to turn our campaign into a discussion of their slanders and lies. >> despite the allegations, some key republicans are reaffirming their support for trump this morning. republicans like senator roy of missouri and west virginia gubernatorial candidate argue trump would still be better on key issues like energy and the supreme court than clinton. meanwhile, wiki leaks just released a new batch of hacked e-mails from clinton campaign

out the door with 70s this morning. 60s up to the north. by the afternoon, we climb back in the mid and upper 80s. rain chances about 10%, just spotty showers with that east flow we've been dealing with the last couple of days. changes for the weekend forecast, that is still straight ahead. coming up, new details on a tragic story out of new york. a six-week-old baby dies after plunging down an elevator shaft. now, we are learning just how unsafe the building is. investigators say the mother there. the woman and her infant both fell those eight stories down. somehow, the mother survived this fall. the elevator car was atarntly under repair. residents say there were no warning science posted. records show the building had 50 open code violations, including four for elevators. in the past two years, tenants have complained at least 20 times about out of service

eating its own dog food. >> anna vogel unknowingly fed her dog cesar filet mignon dog food. shortly after, started throwing up pieces of plastic. the company had recalled that product saying a potential choking hazard risk, white pieces of plastic had entered during production. anna says babushka died hours later. >> it's really sad, you know. >> she has been in contact with the company that makes cesars dog food. the company did report the recall to the food and drug administrations and now investigating. coming up, costume concerns. the service the university of florida is now offering for anyone who might be offended

welcome back. 6:15 now. we are learning new information this morning on the man accused of gunning down five people at a mall in washington state. detectives reveal tried to buy a handgun just hours before that ram pain and failed. gun store surveillance video shows the 20-year-old there a short time before he opened fire

apologize. this is from the mall. the owner of that gun store turned him away. the rifle used in the shooting actually belonged to the suspect's father. a scary scene at a zoo in london. a gorilla escaped from its enclosure, forcing that zoo to go on lockdown. the zoo says the gorilla was in a secure area. officials had to use a tranquilizer gun to subdue the gorilla. about 100 visitors had to stay in a cafeteria during the search, but luckily, nobody was hurt. new york a fake good samaritan who's preying on the elderly. his last attack is caught on camera. take a look. the man pretends to want to help another man get into his apartment building. we'll show you that in a moment. but at the last second, here it is, the supposed good samaritan grabs a gold chain off the victim's neck and shoves him down. >> like a snake in the grass,

he should be in jail under the jail. >> under the jail. police released pictures of the crook and hopes someone will recognize him. at one animal shelter in the panhandle, the only thing bigger than the dogs they just received is the outpouring of support they are now getting. last wednesday, the family of a dog breeder in walton county contacted the alaqua animal refuge. the breeder was in poor health and asked the refuge to take in his 73 gre adoption online. >> when they heard that we had 73 of them, it completely blew up our facebook and our telephones and it actually shorted out our web site for a short time. >> now, right now, there's a waiting list for every single dog. if you still want to help, though, the refuge does need cash donations. they say it takes $80,000 a month just to run the shelter without the added burden of all those great danes. 6:17 now.

flooding, bringing the death toll from hurricane matthew to 38 now in the u.s. rain-swollen rivers are still overflowing their banks. governor pat mcrory toured the flood-damaged areas yesterday. one of the latest victims drowned when the car they were in drove around a barricade and into a washed-out road. the second died when he walked into a hole left by an uprooted tree and couldn't get out. and in haiti, the hurricane relief effort is entering a second u.s. military ship arriving offshore thursday to help with aid. un convoys are finally reaching some of the previously-cutoff communities in rugged areas. the storm killed hundreds in haiti a little over a week ago. the damage has posed particular challenges because of its scope and the debris making some places inaccessible. some people still haven't gotten any help there. it is still unclear if the hardest-hit part of flagler

will get help from federal officials. fema officials visited on thursday and focussed their assessment on properties along the state road. est mats this morning show it could cost at least (3) 500-0000 to replace that road. take a look at this. showing us the impacts hurricane matthew had on miami beach. these are before and after pictures showing the storm reconfigured the shore line. storm shifted sand to an area where the army corps of engineers were already working to rebuild. crews say that project on schedule. amazing power of these storms. >> no question about it. we didn't get the brunt of it there. carolinas certainly did out towards the caribbean. by the way, tropics after nicole hit bermuda yesterday, pretty quiet. we are looking good. temperatures nice and cool across the north in the upper 60s. rest of us into 70s chl humidity still tolerable, however, the further north you go, the drier

almost 70 down to the south. so we are looking at some very juicy conditions down to the south, and that, of course, will provide us with higher heat index. all of us, i think, as we warm up today, will generally be with dew points in the mid 60s, which is humid, but not oppressively so. by the way, the dry air that's on top of us yesterday beginning to get pushed down a little bit, little more moisture to work with here. i think that by tomorrow, with the east/west flow like today, we'll have the difference between today and tomorrow will be, i think today we're talking 10 to 20 coverage and then tomorrow, 20 to 30 as that moisture begins to become a little bit more available for us here. then a disturbance will enhance the showers by sunday will become thunderstorms and more coverage 30 to 40%. so we're increasing rain chances beginning today. not so much and then saturday and sunday. the weekend still looks good, and most of us will remain on the dry side, and warm, as well. temperatures in the upper 80s

degrees, in fact, above average here, and it'll feel like about 90 with the humidity. extended forecast takes you into the weekend. 30% chance of showers, and we'll pop in thunderstorms sunday chl behind that, quick-moving feature there by early next week will dry out. rain chances back down to ten with highs in the mid 80s. good morning, everybody. we are following a fatal crash westbound i-4 right at the junction to 275. the southbound to 275 closed right now from i-4. our photographer apparently he just packed the crash so cars are starting to move a little bit, but as you can see, it is still slammed right where he is. all these cars heading northbound on 275 and having to turn around at mlk and then take florida back into the downtown area. this is what it looks like on the interstate. now, i am getting word that they are in the process of reopening at least one of those lanes to get to southbound 275. so i will keep you posted.

right on i-4 heading into downtown. take a look at my map here. so you have a couple of options. avoid i-4 westbound if you can. you can try taking the selman connecter and take the expressway if you are trying to get into downtown tampa and just avoid this mess all together. i just checked the average speed right here on i-4. down to 3 miles an hour. now, i'm also getting word that there is a new crash northbound on 275 right at mlk. that's right where this detour is. i'm working to get more details on that, so me on twitter @tampabaytraffic for the very latest on that crash. it is 6:22. with halloween just around the corner, the university of florida has a warning for students there. be sensitive about the costumes that you choose. >> yeah. they say don't choose anything that might offend anyone. even offering counseling to those who might be o foended. costumes reinforce stereotypes

6:26. take a look at this video showing one of the dangers helicopter pilots are facing. camera crew capturing someone shining a strong, green laser at that chopper, filling the cockpit with glare. >> listen to the pilot's reaction. >> most intense that someone's tried to flash the lights in the six years i've been up here. had it occasionally, was somewhat intense. >> police there say this is a serious and dangerous crime. it puts the flight crew at risk because it can blind the pilot. it could land the culprit in prison for a couple of years facing a hefty fine as well. they are still searching for the person responsible. dad, i found you a kidney donor. >> i found you a kidney match. her name is rachel. you are getting a kidney. >> are you serious? >> yeah. she's serious. that's the sweet reaction when a father realized what his

live, from the station taking action for you, this is abc action news. >> now at 6:30, a deadly crash is causing a huge backup right now on i-4 through downtown. >> going to investigators try to clear the scene. we've been following this deadly crash all morning and how it's impacting your morning commute. the i-4/275 interchange mess even on the best of days. >> we want to check in with janelle. >> i-4 is really backed up. we have been watching it all morning. these cars are at a standstill.

us the backups are pretty bad. >> hey, you should avoid westbound i-4 at all costs because the backup is already back to 50th street as it comes this way. you can see the remnants of the accident and investigation right there. the wrecker right in the middle of the shot. it's actually in the lane that's to the right, which would take you to ashley street, but westbound i-4 into the merge with southbound 275 closed completely. it does look like they've just about wrapped this up, but in the meantime, the backup builds so keep that in mind. you might want to find option. hillsboro avenue, mlk, maybe even the expressway to the south might get you around this, at least in the next hour or so. now back to you. >> yeah. the connecter might be a better option for you because take a look at these drive times. it's taking almost 50 minutes to get from lakeland into downtown tampa. you can see 15 minutes from county line road to 75 because at 75 is where the backup starts, take 34 minutes just to get into downtown. this crash looking at right

mlk. this is one of the detours because all those cars are having to head north on 275 and get off at mlk to turn back around to take florida avenue into downtown, but we now have a new crash here. you can see the flashing lights. traffic starting to back up here as well. one of those mornings where you want to follow me on twitter and leave yourself extra time to get around. weather wise, we are looking good. nice and pleasant out there. generally in the up by the afternoon. in fact, do it by lunchtime in the low 80s. few clouds around. a spotty shower would be about it. 10% coverage so nothing doing there. upper 80s. that will feel like the low 90s. weekend forecast and high rain chances, we'll talk about those in my next forecast. 6:33 this morning. dramatic and disturbing surveillance video of a man on a shooting rampage. >> the pinellas county sheriff just released this video. it is a jaw-dropping look at how dangerous that situation really

weiner has more. >> that shooting victim, sean smith of st. pete, remains in critical condition this morning here, only alive because a deputy helped keep him alive. the sheriff says the shooter seen in this dramatic surveillance video is larry. he shot at three of his neighbors that tuesday along 46th avenue north according to the sheriff. the 65-year-old was apparently angry about being served an eviction notice earlier that day. the one victim he did smith, was kept alive by a deputy who used his clothing to stop the bleeding. the shooter also shot at that same deputy, who fired back and hit larry. he is also here this morning at bay front medical, his condition also critical. in st. pete, abc action news. neighbors are rallying around a polk county family right now after a five-year-old was hit and killed right in front of his own home. austin crawford and his sister

deputies say austin rode into the path of a pickup truck in lakeland and was hit and killed. stunned neighbors rushed over to help. >> her fiance tried to do cpr for a while. he got tired. i scooted him out of the way and supported the boy's neck and was doing cpr. my neighbor across the street was helping me, as well. we did that until the paramedics got here. >> sadly, austin died at lakeland regional health center. deputies are investigating, but they just believe this is a tragic accident. coworkers of a tow truck driver killed early saturday morning will gather this evening to pay their last respects. the funeral will be held at the liberty tabernacle on 22nd street southeast in ruskin. the service begins at 6:00 gregory miller is charged with dui manslaughter for killing mcguire. tow truck drivers are planning a funeral procession on sunday, october 23rd, in his honor.

donald trump made unwanted sexual advances on her back in the 1980s. >> on my e-mail, there were two friends who i add told the story, and they said, you know, you really should -- should -- because they had watched the debate. you really should say something. i thought, okay, maybe this is time to do it. >> jessica leads, who first told her story to the new york times, talked with cnn's anderson cooper last night. she says when she was 38, trump inappropriately touched her on a flight to new york. she decided to tell her story after trump second presidential debate, that he had ever kissed or groped women without their consent. trump vehemently denies her accusations, even threatening to sue the new york times for publishing her story. >> they've slandered me with false accusations, but we will not let these lies distract us from our campaign, and it's a campaign of truth. it really is. i address the fact that i was

it's a disgraceful thing that you can be on the front page of the failing new york times, and it is a failing newspaper, third-rate people, i'm tell -- telling you, third rate, bad people, sick people. >> donald isn't the only trump threatening the media. melania trump is demanding a retraction from people magazine, not for the allegation that her husband sexually assaulted a reporter. instead, she wants a snippet removed about her running into that reporter outside trump tower and chatting with her. melania trump says that conversation never happened. people, though, says it stands by its story. the trump campaign has pulled out of virginia ceding the battleground state to clinton. the campaign says it wants to reallocate resources to north carolina. trump's running mate, mike pence, made two stops in virginia just this week. the attorney for

bush is defending his actions in the 2005 video of donald trump making lewd comments about women. marshall grossman says bush would have been fired from his job with access hollywood if he had told trump to shut up. grossman notes that bush was an nbc universal employee in 2005 while trump's show, the apprentice, aired on nbc. nbc news suspended bush from his current job cohosting the today show after this tape was released. 6:38 now. we are waiting to see if the florida attorney general will supp of these new controversies. she'll appear at the pasco fed rated republican women's club luncheon at 11:00. we haven't heard from her since the leak of these controversial comments. she's also been criticized for accepting a campaign donation from trump while not investigating trump university. a new poll shows hilary clinton extending her lead on donald trump in the presidential

45% of likely voters surveyed back clinton -- clinton had a two-point lead on trump in a september fox news poll. 538 web site now gives clinton a better than 82% chance of winning the white house. silver's statistician has a solid track record predicting the 2008 and 2012 presidential reyeses correctly -- races correctly. meanwhile, clinton took a break from the campaign trail. she brought out onef powerful weapons, first lady michelle obama, who took aim at donald trump without ever saying his name. >> i can't believe that i'm saying that a candidate for president of the united states has bragged about sexually assaulting women. it has shaken me to my car in a way that i couldn't have predicted. the clinton campaign is also still dealing with the fallout from the wiki leaks release.

persuading her to apologize for using a private e-mail server. roger stone, a former staff advisor to donald trump, also admits that he has ties to wiki leaks and its founder. the fight against zika, florida health officials are warning pregnant women to avoid a one-mile-square area of miami just north of the little haiti neighborhood. state officials say five people in this area have been affected with zika. the area joins miami beach as the only active areas of zika transmission now in florida. last month, officials cleared miami's windwood district. so far, there have been over 1,000 zika cases reported in florida. well, new developments in a deadly bus crash that killed a driver and left 43 other people injured. officials say the bus crashed into a semitruck yesterday outside atlanta. investigators confirm the truck was stopped to turn left when the bus slammed into it. they say the trailer was blocking some lanes. according to federal records, the owners of both the semi and the bus had been cited in the

violations. police in south florida arresting a man who may have had a hand in his own capture. investigators say jonathan holman held up a former high school classmate with a gun, taking $200. later texting that victim a picture of two guns with smiley face emojis. apparently he wasn't hard to track down after that. a recall this morning for one of the most popular cars on the road. honda is issuing that recall for 350,000 civics in the u.s. because their parking brakes may it impacts a 2016 coupes and sedans. the automakers say the electric parking brake may not work right after you turn off the ignition, and the car could roll away. honda is contacting owners next month and offering free repairs. the civic was named 2016 north american car of the year at the detroit auto show. legoland is set to reopen this morning at 10:00, nearly 24 hours after the park closed because of a bomb scare. shortly before noon, workers

authorities evacuated the theme park and its hotel before giving the all clear. the park, though, remained closed. eventually guests were allowed to return to their hotel rooms. legoland celebrates its fifth birthday tomorrow. today, park officials will announce the grand opening date for their newest theme land lego ninjago world. they'll feature interactive rides where guests can blast fire, lightning, and ice with their hands. so far, all we know about it is it's set to open some time next year. still ahead, a bus praised for her act of kindness to another passenger. that caught the attention of

the tribute band, abracadabra is performing at the pinellas performing arts center. tickets are $18 in advance, 23 bucks at the door. purchase tickets online at the pinellas park performing arts center web site. take a look at these incredible photos. in fact, the largest live alligator ever caught in texas. the massive gator surprised a homeowner wednesday morning when he crawled out from under that man's trailer. that gator was 13 feet 8 inches long. it weighs 900 pounds. used to being around humans so it's been relocated to a gator refuge after receiving online suggestions that the gator there has been named big tex. >> makes big sense. >> absolutely. well, a wisconsin bus driver says her simple gesture of kindness was no big deal. >> however, her riders noticed and reported her generosity to the transit system. now, willie nash has been driving a milwaukee county bus

though. you see that one lane that's at tampa, west downtown and ashley. that's going to remain closed. that's actually where the motorcycle accident occurred right there. now, look at the backup. as we go up, it's all the way up past the connecter. the connecter is about half full coming off the selmon then all the way up around the corner towards mlk. so you definitely have a half hour built in here. avoid this if you can. but like i said, westbound i-4, those two lanes are now open to merge with 275. back to you, janelle. >> it's taking 45 minutes to get from 75 to 275. that's a small stretch there that usually takes about 8 minutes. so your option, you can take the connecter down to the selmon expressway to head into downtown, or you can follow the cars that are heading north on 275 and take that to mlk. however, you are going to run into a crash right here, and you can see the backup that's building on northbound 275. we usually don't see that this time of the morning, but we are seeing it right now. so you might want to leave yourself some extra time if you

an update on a fatal crash following all morning right at the junction with i-4 and 275. you can now get through from i-4 westbound to southbound 275. you're looking at a live picture theer from action air 1, however, remain blocked. that was the sight of the fatal motorcycle crash. look at your drive times. 43 minutes from lakeland to downtown. take a look at this jaw-dropping surveillance video from a shooting rampage earlier this week. the pinellas sheriff's office just released a video to show you how dangerous this whole situation was. the sheriff said 65-year-old larry wanted revenge, shooting at three of his neighbors after being served an eviction notice.
