candidates one poll apart. team coverage this morning starting with pierre thomas in washington. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. the fbi director is in the midst of a political cat fire storm under searing attack now under intense pressure to say whether the batch of e-mails are significant or not. this morning, armed with a court order, fbi agents are set to begin an intensive effort to go through thousands of e-mails huma abedin, one of hillary clinton's closest confidants. these e-mails were discovered while the fbi was investigating abedin's estranged husband, anthony weern. the fbi wants to know if the e-mails contain classified information and if they're connected to secretary clinton's private server.

by officials blind sided by the announcements. democrats took aim. >> in july, the director said no reasonable prosecutor would move forward. there's nothing we have been shown, nothing the director has said to alter that conclusion. >> reporter: senate minority leader harry reid issued a pliserring attack. writing he regretted working to get comey confirmed. i now see that i was wrong. letter pend by former attorney general eric holder and dozens of other former prosecutors and high-ranking officials, including republicans, criticizing comey. many of us have worked with director comey. all of us respect him. his unprecedented decision to publicky comment on evidence that may be part of an ongoing inquiry leaves us astonished and

context. bottom line this is why federal and local authorities often say we can't comment on an ongoing investigation. why? because it leads people to start guessing and making bad choices. >> and because of that vacuum, he's under pressure to mutt out more information closer to an election as they go through the e-mails. >> i don't expect he'll do that. i don't expeekt we'll hear anything else from james comey. it's unlikely this is going to lead to any indictment. they're looking at these new e-mails. they're not revisiting the old investigation. they're not looking back and saying, did we get it right the firts time? this is just a question of, is there something new that will surpass that very high legal standard which is intentional mishandling of classified information. >> it's easy to run computer programs to determine if these

after a shootout with police overnight. steve osunsami has the dramatic details. >> reporter: he was running from the law for a week. but the long arm of authorities caught up with 38-year-old michael vance late sunday night in western oklahoma. the 38-year-old refused to give up and died in a shootout with police. about 130 miles northwest of oklahoma city. police had been searching for him since october 23rd. he was first accuse of shooting two police officers and car ja he shot another woman in the thigh and drove eight miles to a home where police say he brutally killed two family members. what frustrated police more was when he went to social media to brag about the story. >> it hurts. >> reporter: he live-streamed his getaway. >> wow, that really hurt, see, i'm bleeding where the police shot me. >> reporter: authorities caught up with vance sunday morning when police spotted him leaving the camp site.

they traded bullets. vance escaped that shootout but was shot by the highway patrol 30 minutes later. a police officer was shot in the shoulder in the shootout. those injuries are not life-threatening. he's been treated for that injury this morning. robin? >> all right, steve, thank you. now to amy with this morning's other top stories, starting with another scare for only airline passengers. >> that's ft. lauderdale was evacuated because of a bomb scare. a passenger reportedly saw messages on the phones of two other passengers about bombs. >> we are the aircraft that had the bomb threat. we would like to declare an emergency. >> police came on board, took the two men off, evacuated the plane. the plane was searched. nothing was found.

american airlines fire on friday on the tarmac in chicago. boarded on takeoff. now the ntsb is investigating. revealing details about what caused the plaz. want to talk to david kerley about this. we see the video from hector, a passenger on the plane. showing just how chaotic it was this those few moments as the takeoff was aborted. what have we learned since then? about what caused all this? >> they saw the fire and the flames. they swhapd that 767 is on the runway. it's getting ready to take off. throttled up. the pilot hears a bump. it was the right engine. and in the engine, you're compressing the air to explode it with fuel. and what happened was that the engine let go. a part in the compression session blew up. it's called an uncontained failure. parts hit everywhere. one part hit 3,000 feet away,
