>> thank you for joining us on this day after election day. i'm dan shaffer. >> i'm dia riley. the final votes are still being counted, but trump has claimed more than the 270 electoral votes needed to win. >> in fact, got a boost from key -- several, in fact, key battleground states including here in florida. more on that and his victory message coming up in a few minutes. a check on your forecast and traffic. >> a lot of clouds for today. unlike last couple of days, we'll noer cast here. cedar keys seeing that. you're heaviest of the rain will stay offshore with the area of low pressure itself with a front will move through there. not a huge deal as far as the rain physical for today, but it will be a mostly cloud y day. that'll keep our temperatures down for now in the mid and upper 60s. we'll get back to you about 79 for the high temperature today.

>> good morning, dia. it was a very gracious-sounding donald trump addressing his supporters telling them he had received a call from hillary clinton conceding the election. he went onto thank former secretary of state hillary clinton for her years of service, and then he discussed his plan to unite the country after a very divisive campaign, pledging to every citizen that he will be a president for all americans, calling his campaign, as he has many times, a movement comprised of america f different backgrounds who want the government to serve the people, to which, trump concluded serve the people, it will. >> it's been what they call a historic event, but to be really historic, we have to do a great job , and i promise you that i will not let you down. we will do a great job. >> trump has laid out what he calls his contract to the

that plan includes repealing obamacare, imposing term limits on members of congress, negotiating trade deals, and what was perhaps the cornerstone of his campaign, ending illegal immigration by building a wall on our southern border. live this morning in tampa, james tully, abc action news. >> thanks, james. stunned and shocked. those are the words hillary clinton supporters are using this morning. >> including those here in tampa bay who backed clinton all the way. abc is live. rodney, not the way supporters imagined this would play out. >> certainly not, dan. things all quiet. as you can see, offices locked up. folks pretty disappointed about this. at this point, hillary clinton still has not addressed any of her supporters. her last interaction actually coming in a tweet late last night. that read in part, this team has so much to be proud of.

her supporters, that was a loss. many people thought hillary clinton would be making history. instead, they are trying to determine how she lost this race. ate: ton's rally in new york, supporters sent home early. of course, this has been a very hard campaign. coming up this morning at 6:30, we'll hear from local clinton supporters here on tampa about what they think about this election and what they feel about an upcoming trump presidency. reportinli news. four minutes after 6:00. we turn now to abc action news anchor lindsey lowe. >> dia, i know you were awake with me as well as many of our viewers out there waiting to see what florida did. florida did go red early on in the night. shortly after that, north carolina went red, as well, and then we started to see things slow down past 2 a.m. before we clearly started to see the breakdown of the map, as we see it this way. a handful 06 precincts in north

extended voting hours after the electronic voting glitch early tuesday. nevada, important swing state. that one went to hilary, but the rest of those crucial swing must-win states went red, including pennsylvania, where just 70,000 votes separate trump and hilary. wisconsin was called just after 3:00 in the morning. there are still a handful of states. the ones you see here in gray, the associated press has yet to call. alaska, arizona, michigan, new hampshire. we're fo granite state, now favors donald trump, whereas the last hour or two, they favored hillary clinton. the difference in votes there, about 700. michigan, 16 electoral votes now leaning towards trump, as well, but only by 16,000 votes. of course, keeping a close eye on these five remaining states. the associated press again has yet to call. coming up if a few minutes, we are going to run down how the balance of power is shaking things up in dc and what this

another big reyes here in florida. senator marco rubio will keep his senate seat. his win was considered crucial for republicans to maintain control of the senate. republican senator beat challenger u.s. representative patrick murphy, take a look at the final results here. rubio claiming victory by eight percentage points. >> there is still no nation on earth than i would rather be. despite all of our challenges, there is no country, and there is no people on this planet that i would trade in the 21st ken tri. america is going to be okay. >> murphy was gracious in his concession speech. >> just a few minutes ago, i had a chance to speak to senator rubio, congratulated him. couple showers in the forecast. what was the last time it rained? i forgot already. it will today. it will be light but coming in with a front behiebdz it. we clear out. talk more about that in a few minutes. ten minutes after 6:00 right now chl we are breaking down election results for you. voters here in florida also decided on two major amendments yesterday. >> including one controv amendment, failed to pass, even though it received a majority of the votes. #5e789s, though, need 60% to become law. it only garnered 51%. amendment 2, medical marijuana on the other hand, passed after a narrow te feet two years ago. take a look at the final results here. that measure easily passed getting 71% of the vote. it needed at least 60% to become law. a group of supporters cheered when the vote was

was it the fbi investigation? was it just a vote on character? >> it was a lot of it. but part of the problem was that rebuilding the obama coalition and putting together the younger vote and minority vote to the degree that it was when obama ran was slr difficult for her. you could tell she was having these problems in the last week or so in nancy alvarez fla. she would always pick cleblg campus as the millenial vote. >> she did get that. sdpr still, the obama came in, especially the southeast florida. you could see, again, they were worried about the black vote being elevated, and it, too, was not where it was when obama ran. people are just sdsh these two groups, minorities and millenials just didn't seem gender as the same kind of barrier or history-making thing to break as they did reyes. >> let's talk about some of the polling data. cnn says clinton got most of the

as she might have expected. they look like 29% that i saw of the latino vote went to trump. >> how quickly people forget. the cuban vote in miami is republican. marco rubio helped bring that group back, and donald trump himself went down to southeast florida to the older cuban community two times, begging their leaders, vote republican, give me a chance. they came back home. a lot of with the party they've been registered with. >> so what does donald trump do now? >> has to reach his hand across the isle. talk statement like in his acceptance speech. looked like a step in the right direction. first thing he's got to do is walk over to congress and talk to the democrats and say if there's some portion of the economy are problems that we can fix together quick. >> been a long night for all of

former florida republican governor charlie crist is reviving his political career as a democrat. he will serve in congress before his 13th congressional district, which includes the southern part of pinellas county. you're looking at the results right now. he defeats the incumbent republican david jolly 52 to 48%. christ delivered his victory speech at the hotel. >> being a public servant is a calling for me, and i do love it because i love serving people. i mean, that's what been about. so i'm grateful they let me do it again. >> what is your goal with this particular team? >> my goal is to fight for the people, you know, to look out for them, for our senior citizens, our environment, our kids in school. >> this win comes after he lost the 2010 u.s. senate race as an independent. he decided to run for the u.s. house after the state supreme court decided to redraw districts. the new district, becoming more heavily democratic.

a man who lost his bid for reelection to congress. he celebrated his supporters and faith after conceding. johnny butted heads with fellow republicans in congress and did not support donald trump for president. while the race went to the democrats, the presidential race, of course, signalled a shift in pinellas county. >> pinellas county going red for the first time in nearly three decades. voters choosing donald trump along with, along what's known as the anchor of the i-4 corridor vote. trump beat clinton 5,000 vote. the party celebrated this historic milestone at the hilton hotel last night. >> it's huge. pinellas county, in my opinion, is the number one swing county and swing state in the country. we carried pinellas for donald trump. that's the second time since 1988 that a republican candidate for president carried pinellas county. >> and donald trump claims sfuning victories in key battleground states, big states

voted republican in almost 30 years. >> pennsylvania, for example. last night for the first time since 1988. that was president george h.w. bush. same story in michigan so far. still not called yet. the clinton camp was wrapped up before voting even began. trump defied the odds, though. the polls hitting these states hafrd while campaigning. his last stop was, in fact, in michigan. the last six presidential elections, but take a look at the result sos far from last night. donald trump with a slight lead over hillary clinton. most of the spire state, counties red, say for some of the democratic strongholds around destroit and lancing. want to show you something else. take a look at the breakdown of voters here by party id. this right here. you'll notice that 10% of democrats actually voted for

back here with the forecast. here's where you check in on a couple light showers that are beginning to move through. we have this front that'll come in today. very different from what we've had the last couple of days. fiech cast will show a smattering of showers. this is not going to be a humg deal, not a wall of water coming in here. in fact, future cast makes it look a little more ominous here. 20 to 30% coverage. the band of showers moves throughout the day. i think the heaviest rain today is offshore where an the front itself will be moving, too, but we are locked in with clouds today. little cooler than we have been here. not so much because we are behind the front but just some cloud cover. light rain, that'll get us up to the 70s. further south you go away from that front and cloud cover and rain fall, we are looking at lower 806s. eventually, we are all going to get into it here. the front has to go through, and it will tonight.

with a simple headline, president trump. over in europe, london's independent calling america's election a disunited states. take a hook at the front cover. the translated headline, "horribly trump." take a look at this right here. a group of women calling themselves the pantsuit nation. got a lot of attention on election day. this group of hillary clinton support eers started as a secret invitation only dproup on facebook. it gained 2 million members in 18 days. the group's organizing effort didn't go unnoticed by the clinton campaign and hillary clinton herself. who needs a tv when you can just look up at the side of one of the largest buildings in america. take a look at this. the empire state building featured a breathtaking display of election results. the new york landmark shined bright on election map showing realtime election results. they partnered with cnn, instagram, and ca technologies to put on this display.

tully is live now in tampa. good morning, james. >> dia, good morning. as you wait for some kind of morning breeze to start flowing the trump flag behind me, the giant flag along i-275 here in tampa. i can tell you about how our president-elect in his victory speech last night emphasized his plans to unite our country. to be a president for all americans. now that his campaign is over, he says his work is just beginning. we spent some time last night at a local trump party. as you can see here, his supporters, many jubilant and emotional. no question, one of his most important decisions will be filling vacant seats on the supreme court. late last month, jump released a list comprised of 21 conservative junls, including justice of the supreme court of florida, charles canady. >> trump supporters and campaign volunteers telling us they do trust him to fulfill his

this political season for supporters of hillary clinton. for now, reporting live this morning, rodney dunnigan, abc action news. >> thanks, rodney. 25 minutes until 7:00. we are following breaking news in california where protesters are reacting to the election by taking to the streets and starting fires. hundreds of protesters turned out around san francisco and san d iego. marchers chanted and blocked freeways. a car hit one protester on a highway. we are still waiting to find out the extent of that person's injuries. protests also erupted at the university of california in santa cruz, los angeles, irvine, and san diego. with a donald trump victory, financial markets around the world are nervous. markets in asia opened solidly higher but quickly shed those gains as the overnight returns started coming in favor of trump. they are concerned over what a trump presidency might mean for the economy and trade. take a look at the world markets right now. you'll see down over 5% today.

england down just a fraction. the german dax down about one and a quarter. other financial markets now, wall street saw hillary clinton as more likely to maintain the status quo. donald trump's policies, of course, are less cheer, so hang onto your 401 k's. u.s. market futures pointing to a much lower opening. you can see the dow down 370 points. the s& p down 49 points. the mexican peso crashing to an all-time low. the u.s. is trading partner, trump's tough talk including building nafta and building that wall on the border. meantime, investors are bidding up the price of gold looking for safety. gold upright now to $1,304 an ounce. the presidential race coming down to the early-morning hours. a lot of people are waking up to the news that donald trump is now our nengs president. >> abc action news reporter ashley is engage -- gauging that

diner. how are people digesting the news? >> it's kind of a mixed bag. still pretty quiet in here. a lot of folks may have stayed up late to find out the results and may be sleeping in a little bit, but not claude webb. he is here this morning with a group of friends from his church. tell me how you're feeling. >> i'm feeling happy that donald trump won. i think that the american people are just tired of this country being run by career politicians, and i think it's time change. >> did you stay up to watch the results? did you find out this morning? were you surprised at all? >> i found out this morning, and i was surprised, yes. >> talk to me about what you're hoping that donald trump is going to accomplish in his first 100 days of office? >> well, i hope and pray that somehow he can unify this country, get us back together so we're all on the same page. and i just pray that that will happen. >> that's testify nitly dominating the conversation this morning. i know certainly at this table here. across the diner, i did speak

didn't know if he was going to be able to digest his breakfast this morning. he said that he wasn't necessarily feeling his best. definitely diverse opinions here in this diner. we want to keep that conversation going both here and on social media so feel free to weigh in. dan and dia. the big race here in florida, senator marco rubio is going to keep his seat in the u.s. senate. rubio only decided to seek reelection after he was soundly defeated by donald florida's presidential primary. rubio beat south florida congressman patrick murphy. rubio claiming victory by more than 700 thousand votes. a spread of 8%. 7 thousand votes rather. last night in miami, rubio addressed his supporters saying floridans need to leave in encouraging civil diskour. >> i hope we as a people here in

example in this great state that we cannot share a country where people hate each other because of their political affiliations. we cannot move forward as a nation if we cannot have enlightened debates about tough issues. you can disagree with someone without hating them. >> rubio's win helped republicans retain control of the senate. the question now is how will that impact policy in the coming years. abc action news anchor lindsey lowe joins us live to break that down to us. >> it wasn't this way. political analysts have been saying that for months, especially the last couple of weeks, but the republican party's incumbents, many out spent and with struggling campaigns, managed to survive overnight. here is a look at how things are settling in the senate. republicans need 51 to hold the power, and they have it. democrats at 47. aside from rubio, other notable wins include rand paul of kentucky, john mccain of arizona.

we start off our morning sprint with more votes being tallied in multiple states. hillary clinton has just taken the lead in the popular vote with about 96% of all presinks reporting. with the electoral vote, donald trump already hit the mark needed to pk the 45th president

the billionaire businessman addressed the nation from new york city just before 3:00 this morning. he thanked clinton for years of service and discussed uniting the country by being a president for all americans. >> it's my honor as. it's an amazing evening. it's been an amazing two-year period, and i love this country. thank you. thank you very much. >> included in trump's plan for his first 100 days in office, repealing obamacare and illegal immigration by building a wall on our southern border. while trump supporters are celebrating this morning, those backing clinton are stunned and shocked. in new york, supporters were sent home early when it was announced clinton would not be making a speech. at this point, her campaign has in the announced when she will address the election loss. clinton's last reaction coming to supporters in a thank you message she posted on twitter. a group of russians celebrated at a moscow bar when

lower house of parliament got the news, the chamber broke into applause. senator marco rubio first wanted to be president. when that didn't work out, he decided to seek a second term in washington despite saying he wouldn't do so. florida voters didn't hold that against him. he keeps his seat after defeating south florida congressman patrick murphy. democrat chris in the reyes for u.s. house district 13. it was a closely-watched battle. governor chris. he did say the redrawn district line were a major factor. florida voters backed amendment 2 with 70% of the vote, legalizing medical marijuana after a narrow defeat two years ago. right now, florida has a limited use law, but amendment 2 now expanding the list of qualifying ailments to ten conditions. this morning, we are breaking down how people voted here in the bay area. lindsey lowe joins us live. lindsey, almost every county went red.

one. this many analysts and national media kept a very close high specifically on hillsborough county, which has predicted the winner of 19 of the last 20 elections. this time, hillsborough county voted for hilary, while florida and the nation, of course, now, as we know, went to trump. pinellas county voted with obama in '08, and in 2012, this year, voters chose trump. and in pasco, polk, manatee, and sarasota counties, they all went red, as well. in fact, turnout hit 77%. that's up 75% from 2012. and voter turnout in manatee was up 73% from 2012. absolute proof there that trump's final rallies in those counties certainly paid off. >> yeah. a lot of people are waking up to the historic news, wondering how will a trump presidency affect mer, what does it mean for you and your family. abc action news political analyst dr. susan is here to

it's been a long night for you. a stunning upset. the polls apafrntly got it all wrong. to his credit, donald trump said all along he was leading. is this basically america's version of brexit, you think? >> many people are drawing those parallels. but it's also the case that we've been talking about it for a long time, even here on our news, the fact that there has been that kind of silent or, you know, silent trump vote. people would not acknowledge to pollsters that they were going to vote for him. we could see it in some of neighborhoods, people saying, well, i'm going to support him, but i don't even want my neighbor to know. >> donald trump gave his victory speech before 3:00 this morning. he said in that speech that he wants to unite all americans. he wants to bind the wounds of division. how much of a challenge is that going to be for him? >> it's very, very difficult because this was the most divisive election in modern history, if ever, almost, and it's also true that it was the clearest difference between two candidates.
