this chaos. abc action news anchor james tully is live on the scene. he's been talking to investigators. what have you found out. >> deiah, what a scene this is. yes, we have been talking to police on scene. this happened at the bad monkey bar on 7th avenue here in ybor city. that car is just about to get removed from the front of the bar, and that search at this hour is still on for the driver, but after seeing surveillance video from this bar, police are ve this black nissan altima into the front door. the video is telling us something else, too. police said that it shows the driver apparently taking aim at a person who was standing in front of bad monkey bar hitting them and knocking them back into the glass. you see the glass is shattered, that front door has some pretty serious damage as well. that person somehow escaped with only minor injuries. it was a fight outside of this bar right after closing time

two people involved in that fight are in police custody, and we understand that those two people know who the driver is, another big help to police. the car is a rental. the sergeant on team tells me he has officers all over ybor right now looking for whoever was driving this car, and again, they tell me they are very confident that they will find that person. live this morning in ybor city, james tully abc following more breaking news, this time out of tampa. officers pursuing a stolen car arrested two people inside after they got stuck on some railroad tracks. this whole thing started when police tried to pull the car over and the driver sped off. officers pursued for more than 4 miles at speeds up to 80 miles an hour. when the chase got near bush boulevard the driver tried to run over some railroad tracks and got stuck. police arrested both people in the car. good morning, cool start,

and that's not hard. we were in the mid and upper 60s this time yesterday with the clouds on top of us. still some leftover clouds and that's what's saving us from being widespread into the upper 50s. brooksville already hit a low of 48 this morning, a little higher as patches of clouds roll in. when that happens kind of put a stop on the cooling trend as it acts as a belong et here. a lot -- blanket here. that will produce a partly cloudy to mostly cloudy sky later by midday and later this afternoon, the dry air begins to win out. down towards south florida they begin to dry out as well. we're looking much better, certainly nothing like we had yesterday where we had the overcast skies. there will be a different look to the sky today in that we'll see plenty of sunshine with those temperatures. recovering nicely despite the cool start. we'll take it outside. it will be a nice day and about 75 for the daytime high.

up a church. detectives say ethan coal walked into mary magdalene church monday and demanded to talk to the pastor or else a bomb would go off. crews searched the area but did not find explosives. the homicide rate is rising in florida, especially by guns since stand your ground went into effect. a new study using data from the cdc shows there are anaverage of 17 more homicides a month up to 99 deaths and the homicides by guns increased by 32% since 2005 when stand your ground passed. it allows you to use deadly force if you feel your life was threatened. the study also found states without this law did not see this increase. 4 minutes after 6. wore learning about arson where messages of hate were written on a mobile home. we told you about that fire in

yesterday. they say the property manager is looking to set up surveillance cameras so it doesn't happen again. investigators think the people who set the fire are also behind a similar message on a home a few blocks away. they're now asking for tips on who might be responsible. more reports this morning about president-elect donald trump's possible cabinet members. now a senior trump official telling news outlets rudy giuliani is the front runner to become secretary of state. giuliani the former new york city mayor. that se giuliani has no competition if he wants the job. president obama is revealing more about his meeting with president-elect donald trump. he says he hopes mr. trump will soon send a message calling for peace and unity. >> it's very important to try to send some signals of unity, and to reach out to minority groups or women or others. >> president obama says he urged mr. trump to reach out to

14 minutes after 6 right now, breaking developments on one of the men featured on the netflix drama series making a murderer. defendant brendan dassey could be released from jail as early as today. a judge or conditions. he has until noon today to let the probation office know where he's going to live. that means he could be released at that time. dassey has been in prison for eleven years for the murder of photographer teresa halbach. a judge ruled investigators tricked him into confessing he helped his uncle kill her. the judge ordered he be released while the appeals process plays out. the parent company of chill

i started ducking and ducking, and i jumped the gate. >> he ran for cover at a neighbor's house, arasayes was arrested. he's now out of jail. we did some checking but found no prior criminal history. 6:17 now, a teenager on his way to a field trip dies after falling from the school bus and on to the highway. this happened in texas as the class was traveling to a nearby university for a college visit. for treatment of a head injury but he later died. investigators are searching for the pilot of a drone who they think nearly hit a passenger jet over canada. they say the airlines flight had to dodge the object in midair over toronto monday morning. two flight attendants were injured. they were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. florida forest service has joined the fight against this wildfire in tennessee. the smoke prompting a state of emergency because of the air

crews from around the country, but officials say they still don't have enough staff. the weather service shows southern appalachians suffering through extreme, even exceptional drought conditions. ivan cabrera joins us now. what they could really use is a good soaking rain. they're not going to get it, horrific situation underway across the southeastern u.s. a big area of high pressure, that's been dominating the pattern. look at these numbers here. this is now getting obviously out of hand: the wildfires will continue and anything that there, northern georgia getting in on that as well. southern tennessee and parts of alabama as well. this entire area needs a good deal of rain and of course now we're in the drier months, we need these fronts to come through with a little more moisture. the ones that have moved through our area haven't produced much and the next one won't either. moisture starved will continue here unfortunately. for us a lot of clouds yesterday. that's that front that's well down to the south producing

today. that will set the stage for several days of fantastic weather with full sun. cool mornings, yes, despite that we'll recover nicely. then we'll even get rid of that the next few days. tomorrow morning we'll wake up cool again. look at these temperatures here, still low it mid-50s. we've already had upper 40s across the north and a nice warmup through the afternoon. 70s, less cloud cover tomorrow. that sets the stage for cooler temperatures and more widespread as opposed to the nature coast, we'll share those upper 40s with areas a little further down to the south. a nice recovery, even milder than today, tomorrow's high temperatures into the upper 70s. our next front comes in over the weekend. you can't tell that it's here. take a look at the temperatures. look at the difference between saturday and sunday. a huge drop in temps, not just

right now it's 6:25. take a look at this, caught on camera there. a speaker at an anti-trump rally at ohio state university gets attacked. you saw that man come running down the stairs, knock that guy over who was holding the

[ bleep ] [ yelling ] >> campus police quickly grabbed the attacker. the university student paper recorded the entire incident. ohio state university released statement to students last woke saying that it actively protects first amendment rights, but school officials are concerned about assault on campus since the election. new this morning, at least two more churches are reporting vandalism with politically inspired graffiti. an episcopal church near indianapolis posted these pictures, a swastika and the words heil trump were painted on the sanctuary. hours later another episcopal church was hit. we showed you those signs, somebody putting a trump nation whites only on a sign may now see that same phrase on a wall in the church's cemetery. more than 200 cases of vandalism have been reported since election day. it is 6:26 right now. if you're among the millions of

bar ends with that car crashing right into the building. >> police say this was no accident. the driver apparently was aiming for someone. now they're searching for that driver. thanks for waking up with abc, i'm dan shaffer. >> and factor, i'm deiah riley. you're seeing -- and good morning, i'm deiah riley. you're seeing the damage left behind there. for the first time this morning, we're hearing from police as they search for the driver responsible. >> we're going to get a live update from the scene in just a minute. first let's get a check on traffic and weather together as you start here's ivan. >> a cold start out there this morning, low 50s, some upper 40s across the nature coast. crystal river at 52. 54 in brooksville, and we're looking at generally upper 50s elsewhere, although from this time yesterday we're running 9 to as cold as 11 degrees. that's impressive here, and of course we have the front down to the south. still some leftover clouds with it, but not going to be overcast. mostly cloudy this morning, and then we'll break into plenty of sunshine this afternoon, and we'll do that with warming

we'll be back into the mid-70s. and i've been checking traffic cameras all across the bay area. here's a live look at i-4 and 275, malfunction junction if you will. but all is well right now, no crashes or breakdowns out there, and your drove on i-4, we are still in the green, starting to slow down just little bit. 25 minutes from county line rodent downtown and down there at the bottom we're looking at 10 minutes from 75 to 275. we've been telling you all morning about the water break on hillsborough avenue. captain al is flying over that right now. is it causing any delays out there. >> good news is it is not. you can see those lanes getting past it. this is eastbound hillsborough avenue right at 22nd street. there a's taco bell and a burger king there on the right. might be familiar with that. they do have two lanes blocked right there. however eastbound's not busy in the morning. that's good news for commuters. westbound is picking up but no

now become to the desk. thank you captain al. 6:31 right now, we want to get back to breaking new developments in ybor city where we showed you that car that crashed right into a bar. police are looking for the driver responsible. >> abc action news anchor james tully is live where this happened. james, police believe this was no accident. >> dan, that's right. this is another case where surveillance video's going to play such a huge role here because police tell me after watching that video not only are they going to be able to find out who crashed into this -- the front of this bar behind me, the bad monkey bar in ybor, but also they're going to be able to dish out the correct charges. take a look at some footage we took right after this happened. you can see the black nissan altima into the front of the bad monkey bar causing all kind of damage. there's a window pane knocked out here, the front door pushed back. that footage police say shows the driver apparently taking aim at a person who was standing in front of the bar hitting them back into that

it's enough for police to believe there was intent behind this. >> so far through the evidence we feel it's intentional but it is an ongoing investigation. if anybody would have been standing in front of the bar that could have been seriously hurt, yes. >> thankfully that bar was closed and there weren't any patrons inside, and now the repair work is going to begin. it all started with a fight outside the bar after it closed. we understand two people involved in that fight are custody and they do know the driver. the sergeant here tells me he has police all over ybor looking for that driver, and tells me they are very confident they will make an arrest sometime this morning. that's the latest from here, live in ybor city, james tully abc action news. thank you james. 6:33. we've got even more breaking news out of tampa right now. officers pursuing a stolen car arrest the two people inside after they got stuck on some rail tracks. this whole thing started after

over. the driver sped off. officers pursued at more than 4 miles. the driver tried to run over railroad tracks and got stuck. police arrested both people in the car. breaking news in the fight against terror. a german news agency reporting hundreds of police officers in berlin are searching for more than 200 offices mosques, and apartments all connected to supporters of an islamic group called the true religion. that distributing copies of the koran across the country. reports say the country's intelligence agency found that organization is helping recruit people to send to syria to fight for isis. germany is expected to place a ban on that group later today. volunteers in mosul are now dealing with another concern. civilians stumbling on to bombs. witnesses say isis has been hiding land mines in residential areas.

their homes. some families are returning early. mine advisory groups are teaching children the potentially life saving lesson of what to look out for and what not to touch. they say militants are using toys as booby traps. we're learning more this morning about a deputy involved shooting in lee county where witnesses say a bystander jumped in to save that deputy's life. the deputy tried to pull over a driver near an i-75 exit, but the suspect took off reaching speeds of more than 100 miles an hour. eventually that driver did stop but then got out attacked the deputy, and that's when a third man apparently showed up and shot that suspect killing him. a witness say the suspect refused to get off the deputy and the deputy was yelling shoot him. >> threatening the guy to get off the officer and he refused to get off and the officer said shoot him, shoot him, and then he shot him. >> that deputy is expected to recover. the department was supposed to

that shot that suspect. that news conference was canceled. deputies have not been able to locate the suspect's family to notify him. panicked parents in pasco county are fighting a plan to rezone schools and bus their kids across the county. we've been following this story for more than a week now. hundreds of those parents packed a high school theater in protest last night. district officials are considering five plans to help fix overcrowding in western pasco county schools. mitchell high is operating at 130% capacity parents say the district hasn't been transparent about the process and they're calling for officials to delay any rezoning plans. >> none of the neighborhoods were given any of this information until august, and up until that point, the school board continued to deny that there was any rezoning being taken place. >> the rezoning committee is going to meet thursday morning to narrow down the five plans. a decision will ultimately be made by the school board.

north. inspectors saw more than 60 live and dead roaches all over that kitchen including near the cook's line, the cuban sandwich press and coolers. a stop sale was issued on cooked plantains, black beans and rice because they were kept at dangerous temperatures that should make you sick. pico's owner ramon senior hernandez says his 22-year-old son ramon junior manages picos to go. ramon senior says he immediately went over to go to clean up the issues and retrain his son on the importance of food safety. we've got a special dirty dining investigation on more than a half dozen local publix grocery stores failing their inspections. rodents in the kitchen and pounds and pounds of publix's favorite foods at dangerous temperatures. which are not passing and what the corporate office is blaming for these failing grades. that's tonight on abc action news at 11. sarasota county drivers may

clogging up university parkway and fruitville road. the county wants to build an overpass near i-75 to ease congestion. a discussion on the proposed overpass happens tonight at 6:30 at the church of hope. caught on camera, the secret life of deer. right now it's peak breeding time for deer which is known as a rut. during a rut, bucks scrape to mark their territory making dirt spots and rub their scent glands in the area. it's a rarely seen. we should be look at that right. if you live in pinellas park and want to pay less for your flood insurance premium, the city is hosting a meeting to teach residents how to rows those premiums. that meeting is held at the pinellas park auditorium, 7690- 59th street. homeowners can learn about the new laws and regulations and some changes that could be made to help you save some money.

the driver who crashed into the front of an ybor city bar. police are looking for that driver right now. they say they have surveillance video from outside the bad monkey bar showing the driver apparently trying to drive over someone. one person was hit but escaped with minor injuries. two other men were arrested for instigating a fight that broke out just before the crash. the discovery of a stolen car ends with the arrest of two people in that car after it got stuck on some railroad tracks. police inia that car over but the driver sped off. they pursued it at speeds up to 80 miles an hour, and then near bush boulevard the driver tried to drive over these railroad tracks but the car got stuck. pro protestors against the dakota access pipeline in north dakota. yesterday the army corps of engineers announced it's finished reviewing the pipeline's route. engineers want input from a nearby indian reservation.

the tribe's sacred sites and could contaminate their water supply. donald trump continues focusing on building his cabinet. rudy giuliani is now seen as the favorite to serve as secretary of state. trump's son-in-law jerry kushner could have an unofficial advisory role in the trump administration the laws prevent any president from hiring a relative. a polk county school employee is fighting to keep her job. >> brenda young is accused of lying and changing school records hours after a young student was killed trying to get to his bus stop. rodney dunigan is live where that student died. she'll make her case to the school board tonight. >> reporter: and deiah, at that point we'll finally get to hear her side of the story. she's caused of going -- accused of going into the district's computer system and changing the records indicating that that student did not have to cross this busy clubhouse road to get to the bus stop. if you look right across the

indicating the spot where this young student was killed. according to investigators ceylon kirk got hit while trying to cross the busy intersection. he crossed the road every day to catch this bus stop on the other side. according to the district's investigation, young told her supervisors hours after the accident that none of her kids crossed the road. brenda young was the transportation manager in charge of this bus route. she's accused of goin a new route on the other side of the road so it would appear that kirk wouldn't have to cross. parents say this intersection has been a problem spot for some time. >> there's still a problem out there. i see pedestrians. i see cyclists every day, and it's still incredibly dangerous. >> reporter: and as for brenda young, she's worked as a manager in the transportation department for the polk county school district for more than ten years.

one very important thing to note. i want you guys to see something, this traffic light or this spotlight was put up shortly after this young student was killed, at least giving some sort of light for the students here who stand on the bus stop. a number of the parents that we've spoken to say that simply is not enough. a number of students cross back and forth over this busy road. there isn't even a crosswalk here. that's something they would like to see as well. reporting live in lakeland this morning, rodney dunigan abc 6:48, a new study suggests that post-menopausal woman with a high protein diet are at increased risk of heart failure. the study involved more than 100,000 post-menopausal women. researchers aren't sure why this is and they say more study is needed. these findings were presented at this year's american heart association meeting.

airport. with some cloud cover left over, i think we'll have that throughout the morning and less so throughout the day as dry air takes over. north wind and we're going to be in fine shape after we get rid of these clouds, plenty of sunshine the next few days. despite cold mornings we're going to have nice afternoons with mild finishes here in the mid-50s or mid-70s later on today. tomorrow morning less cloud cover that allows for some radiational cooling here. what that means is we that efficiently enough where we're going to have more widespread upper 40s i think to the north than we did this morning. 75 for the afternoon high today. it's a dry one. notice the changes later in the week will begin to climb up back to around 80 degrees by friday. cooler mornings, less so by friday morning. then, oh, my goodness, look at saturday and sun. if you want the beach weather, get ready saturday near 80. by sunday look at that, bundle up here with temps in the upper
