live from the station taking action for you, this is abc action news. >> a fight outside of this ybor bar leads to a car being driven into it. why police think this was far from a wrong turn as they scour the city trying to find out who was behind the wheel. >> a polk county school employee fighting to keep her job today accused of changing records after a young student was killed trying to walk to a bus stop. ahead in a live report, what parents have to say this morning. >> plus, backlash this morning as president-elect trump's cabinet begins to take shape. why the transition team is hitting some bumps.

crash in tampa, a car collided with an 8-year-old girl while she was walking to school near hollywood street and florida avenue north of the sly avenue intersection when she stepped off the curb, a car's side view mirror apparently struck her in the face. rescuers took that girl to tampa general hospital. her injuries are not life- threatening. lets head over to janelle martinez for an update on how this is impacting traffic right now. >> i can tell you northbound florida avenue just reopened, but the southbound lanes are still blocked, so you might want instead. hopefully they will have all the lanes back open shortly. >> and a live look behind me, i- 4 just east of i-75, still a little bit slow if you're heading into the tampa area. we did have a crash there. that's now off to the side. here are your drive times on i- 4, 28 minutes from county line road into downtown. 13 minutes from 75 down to 275. thanks janelle. also happening overnight, a car crashes into a bar in ybor

here was no accident. they say the driver was apparently trying to run over someone. >> police are still searching the streets hoping to find the person who was behind the wheel. abc action news anchor james tully is live where this happened. lots of damage to the bar. thankfully no serious injuries. >> reporter: dan, yes, thankfully no serious injuries here. as that search continues for the driver, we know this all stemmed from a fight that started outside of the bad monkey bar after it closed, so nobody was daylight is upon us, let me show you the damage here. take a closer look. there's a window pane that's completely blown out, and look at the door here, guys. it's actually propped up off the ground. police say someone was targeted by this car and then struck in front of the bar. i'll show you some video when we first got to the scene. that person somehow escaped with only minor injuries. two people who were involved in that fight i told you about, they were arrested. they know the driver, and that will be a big help to police,

assist this morning is surveillance footage that showed them everything that led up to this. >> so far through the evidence we feel it's intentional, but it is an ongoing investigation. if anybody would have been standing in the front of the bar, that could have been seriously hurt, yes. >> reporter: and because this was deemed an intentional act, this could result in a felony hit and run charge for the driver when that person is found and arrested. the sergeant told me he has officers all over ybor looking for this person and at last check remains very confident that the driver of that car will be found. live this morning in ybor, james tully abc action news. thank you james. it was busy overnight, also happening, tampa officers pursuing a stolen car arrest the two people inside after that car got stuck on some railroad tracks. the whole thing started after police tried to pull the car over and the driver sped off.

miles an hour. when the chase got near bush boulevard, the driver tried to go over some railroad tracks and got stuck. that's when police arrested both people in the car. we will hear firsthand today from the polk county school employee accused of changing school records just hours after a student was killed trying to make his way to a bus stop. >> abc action news reporter rodney dunigan is live along clubhouse road in lakeland where that student was hit and killed. rodney, that employee brenda young is going to plead her case >> reporter: deiah, this is all in an effort to save her job. you know, parents tell us this intersection here has been dangerous for some time. if you look right across the street there, you can see that cross, well, that marks the spot where this young student died. >> we witnessed ourselves this morning how dark and potentially dangerous the intersection of clubhouse and androse is in lakeland. before sunrise students file in one by one on to school buses.

bus stop. according to the polk county school district's investigation, transportation manager brenda young who was in charge of the route told her supervisors hours after the accident that none of her kids crossed the road. she's accused of then going into the computer system and adding a new route on to the other side of the road so it would appear kirk wouldn't have to cross. when one of our reporters went to young's lakeland home for answers she had none.. instead stressing her the story will come out at a termination hearing set for tonight. parents also telling us the district and school board deserve some blame. this road a long time trouble spot. >> there's still a problem out there. i see pedestrians. i see cyclists every day, and it's still incredibly dangerous. >> and since that young student was killed a street light has been placed out here right in front of a bus stop where students meet in the morning, but parents and also a number

that's simply not enough. this neighborhood at least needs a crosswalk. for now reporting live in lakeland this morning, rodney dunigan abc action news. bluer skies than we had yesterday, completely overcast, right, murky day yesterday, not the case later this afternoon. notice the temperatures this morning, frigid stuff here,52 in crystal river. we're actually going to get coer morning is the cloud cover. we'll get full sunshine this afternoon, beginning to climb out of the 50s, now into the 60s. you see some leftover clouds thing out as we speak, that will continue to trend throughout the day today as we push this front of the way. that will set us up for temps around 75, a little below average for this time of the year. that was our temp yesterday. today we'll do it with plenty of sunshine. colder tonight, and even colder for the weekend. in fact, the coldest air mass we've seen so far this season.

we've been chilly. i'll talk more about your weekend forecast as well. happening today, we have just learned st. petersburg police and the family of a murder victim will be holding a news conference early this afternoon as they search for clues into the death of a 36- year-old man. johnny brown was found shot to death inside his parked car last month. we'll let you know what happens later today. we're learning more about a deputy-involved shooting in lee county. witnesses say a bystander stepped in to save that deputy. tried to pull over a driver near an i-75 exit, but the driver took off reaching speeds of more than 100 miles an hour. when the driver finally stopped he reportedly got out of the car and attacked that officer. that's when a bystander ran over it help and shot the driver killing him. >> threatening the guy to get off the officer and he refused to get off, and the officer said shoot him, shoot him, and then he shot him. >> the deputy is expected to

supposed to give us an update on the bystander who shot the driver, but that news conference has been canceled. officers have not been able to locate the family of the man killed to notify them. happening now in the fight against terror, a german news agency reporting hundreds of police officers in berlin are searching more than 2400 offices, mosques and apartments connected to the true religion. it's best known for distributing copies of the koran across the un the intelligence agency found the organization is helping recruit people to send to syria to fight for isis. germany is expected to place a ban on the group today. a high school girl in charlotte county is accused of assaulterring her bus driver. the -- assaulting her bus driver. deputies say she was handcuffed. charlotte county public school said the driver took the right action by calling the sheriff's office and the transportation department to get another bus en route to take the remaining

the girl will be disciplined. 8 minutes after 9 right now, president-elect donald trump's transition team is reportedly hitting some bumps. >> there has been some in fighting among team members. one calling the process a knife fight. mainstream conservatives backing john bolton for secretary of state over trump ally rudy giuliani. president obama is calling on miles per americans to give trump a chance as he prepares to step into the oval office. >> i think it's important for decisions and it's really important to try to send some signals of unity. trump's transition team is facing more backlash over the appointment of conservative media executive steve bannon for senior advisor. the hire drew criticism from left wing groups who say his appointment will not help unify the country. >> the president-elect has dropped a lawsuit to keep jets from flying over his private south florida club. the palm beach post is

mailed commissioners about that lawsuit yesterday. she says mr. trump's attorneys contacted her to say they're dropping the lawsuit. it claimed the maralago resort was being harmed by air traffic from palm beach international airport. business owner says the days of the e-cigarette are numbered. that would require extensive testing and certification that the owner of totally wicked says the products currently on the market. he says the major obstacle in the testing is the cost. >> the testing that they're asking us to do, fda's estimate is $300,000 per. i just said we have over 3,000 items. >> the fda issued this statement regarding the regulations, it is important for the fda to regulate the e- cigarette industry to ensure that these products adhere to certain standards of safety,

now at 9:14. breaking news, we're getting details about a collision that sent an 8-year-old girl to the hospital. abc action news reporter adam winier is live in tampa to explain what happened. >> reporter: that's right, and first let me give you a quick update they are removing the tape here, north florida avenue should be open any moment now.

this 8-year-old girl as she was walking to cleveland elementary school as she does every morning. authorities telling us this morning that she apparently stepped out into florida avenue for some reason when she was hit by the driver side -- sorry the passenger side mirror of this bmw headed south towards downtown tampa. this girl apparently was hit right in the face. she was rushed to the hospital. thankfully we are hearing that her injuries are not life- threatin expected to be okay. i approached the driver of the bmw just before he drove the vehicle off. he was clearly distraught and upset by what had happened and clearly headed to work this morning himself on a normal tuesday morning when this took place. much of this area was blocked off for a lot of the morning. there was a lot of forensics detectives out here taking pictures of the scene, but right now it appears that the scene will be clear, and we're hearing, again, that this girl

this morning as well. we're also told that sibling not injured in any of this. live here in tampa, abc action news. >> our thoughts are with that child and her family. new information on brendan dassey, one of two wisconsin men found guilty of murder and featured on the netflix series making a murderer. >> he could be released from jail as early as today. a judge ordered dassey released on multiple conditions. he has until noon today to let he'll live, which means he could be released at that time. dassey has been in prison for eleven years for the murder of photographer teresa halbach. the state of wisconsin has appealed that ruling but the judge ordered he be released while the appeal process plays out. an autopsy is revealing new information about the man killed by charlotte police back in september. according to the report keith lamont scott was shot once in

days of protests in the city after his family said he was unarmed. the shooting was caught on camera. police do maintain scott had a handgun saying there were repeated commands for him to drop the weapon. right now rescue operations are underway in new zealand after a massive earthquake that stranded thousands of tourists and residents in a coastal town. that 7.8 magnitude quake struck monday morning. it killed two people and triggered a small tsunami. it brought down rocks an cracked apart road shutting off train and vehicle access. it started ferrying people out by military helicopter. we showed you this incredible video yesterday of those three stranded after that massive quake crumbled around them. those cows have been rescued. two cows and a calf were rescued after a farmer and some people helping him dug a track

shopping list this holiday season there are a few things you'll want to keep in mind in terms of size. john matarese explains so you don't waste your money. >> millions of people will be looking at buying new laptops this black friday and most of them will be eyeing 15-inch models, which is now the most popular size. a controversial new report says you may want to rethink those plans. the report says the wisdom of the crowd is not the best wh it urges black friday shoppers to look at 12, 13, or 14-inch laptops instead of the much more popular 15-inch models. the report says if you want a big monitor at home on your desk, then buy a separate plug- in monitor. lap to be mag says 15-inch models are too big for your lap. they're too heavy to carry all day at 5 pounds compared with 3 pounds for smaller models. it also says they are battery

>> absolutely. when you're little like that. i have a good friend who's an anchor in orlando, her triplets -- gosh guys. >> have you seen that video? >> it's adorable. >> so cute. >> absolutely. lets take a look outside, how about that, blue skies. panicking yesterday with all the cloud cover out there. a lot of us were. what happened to our nice weather. it's back today. despite the cool start we'll be back in the mid-70s this afternoon. we did that yest sky. i enjoy a little different feel out there as we continue to see temperatures now beginning to get out of the 60s. we were upper 40s this morning. that's a big change, and even now, 24 hours ago, we're about 5 to 10 degrees cooler than that time yesterday. that's a front down to the south, kind of a messy front with all this moisture rolling in from the gulf. it wasn't a clean passage here. we'll eventually get rid of this cloud cover and we'll do that today. you see the clearing line beginning. it's just been a lot of east

but weil get there today and get back into the mid and upper 70s. by tomorrow morning, though, now this morning we did have those cool temperatures. it wasn't widespread because of the cloud cover. clear skies tomorrow morning. that will set the stage for upper 40s. zephyrhills will be flirting with going south of the 50- degree line. that will be something there. chilly start so bundle up in the morning, and then we'll warm back up in the afternoon, even warmer than today. i think today will be about 75, and after the chilly start tomorrow, we'll be about 78 for the afternoon high. notice w chances are gone for now. so we'll have full sun here right through the end of the week, and each and every day i think we'll add a few degrees to the high temperatures so that by friday we're at 80. we'll be near 80 on saturday and look at sunday, wow, that is the coldest air we've seen so far this season. yes, we've had chilly mornings. when you have high temperatures in the afternoon in the upper 60s, that is quite something here for -- of course if you're

at 9:24 right now, the florida forest service has joined in the fight against this wildfire you see right here in tennessee. the smoke is prompting a state of emergency because of the air quality there. >> fire crews from across the country, in fact, are helping to fight these fires, but officials say they still don't have enough staff, and crews are making progress on other fires, wildfires raging across the carolinas including one spreading ro mountains. officials say at least 20 of these blazes could be arson. the combination of the super moon and a seasonal king tide are putting areas at risk for flooding. take a look at the scene in charleston, south carolina. police had to close several roads yesterday because astronomically a super moon high tide sent water into the streets. the world's saddest polar bear has a new home.

>> plus, how the passing of our stand your ground law in florida may be responsible for increasing homicide rates in our state. we'll break down the numbers for you. >> we have a lot more to get to this morning. first we want to get a look at your forecast, ivan's standing by to tell you what to expect today. >> i am looking to see more sunshine today than yesterday. that's not going to be difficult as we had an overcast sky yesterday. i think we're in much better shape today. we begin to warm things up a lile temperatures. we woke up with even some 40s and 50s, now we're in the 60s. we'll get into the mid-70s this afternoon, be a pleasant day and with the 70s also have some sunshine as well. you see the cloud cover beginning to thin out. the brighter white indicating the thicker clouds and that's closer to a front well down to our south at this point. we're in much better shape today than yesterday. 75 will be the high. quick dropoff, so if you have evening plans, as soon as that sunsets temperatures will begin to tumble.

cold night tonight. we'll talk more about that and the extended forecast in a few minutes. thanks ivan, medical marijuana passed here in florida. new predictions show the new business will be booming in the next few years. >> some say the industry will be worth more than a billion dollars for the next election. clifton french is outside the first medical marijuana dispensary in the bay area. these folks are already talking about expanding. >> reporter: yeah, this company opened here in clear water just in august, and they're already talking about openg area. and according to this new report here, medical marijuana industry will be worth $1.6 billion by the year 2020. now, once again, this is just for medical marijuana use but the industry is going to be hiring a lot of people. you need farmers, scientists, salespeople, even chefs to lace food and candy with medical marijuana. the medical marijuana economy and its medical uses are two reasons why more than 70% of

>> this is more than people getting weed. this is, you know, we're going to be able to get jobs for people. we're going to be able to, you know, boost the economy here locally in the tampa bay area. i mean it's a huge thing. , and the main thing is we are going to be able to help people. >> reporter: and if we're simply talking money here, in colorado it's predicted that legalized marijuana, wre marijuana it's predicted that by 2020 they'll have more than $2 billion in sales and just to put this into perspective, colorado has 5 1/2 million people living in colorado, in florida more than 15 million people living here. i'm reporting live in clear water, clifton french abc action news. deputies have arrested a bradenton man after they say he threatened to blow up a church.

church on monday and demanded to talk to the pastor or else a bomb would go off at 6 p.m. crews searched the area but did not find explosives. the homicide rate is rising here in florida, especially homicides by firearm since the stand your ground law went into effect in 2005. it allows people to use deadly force if they believe they're in harm's way. according to data gathered by the cdc, the average number of homicides was 82 per mon ended in october of 2005. during the next nine years homicides increased to 99 per month. the data also found the rate of homicides by firearms increased about 32%. the study found states without this law did not see that kind of jump. we're learning more this morning about a case of arson with messages of hate next door. we first told you about this mobile home fire in hillsborough county yesterday. neighbors tell us they saw two

they also say the property manager is now looking into setting up surveillance cameras so this doesn't happen again. investigators think the people who set the fire are also behind a similar message on a home a few blocks away. they're now asking for tips, one who may be responsible. rose versus wade, the landmark supreme court decision legalizing abortion nationwide could be in jeopardy. the president-elect is expected to fill one seat on the high court soon to replace the late conservative justice antonin scalia. with three mr. trump could potentially fill even more seats over the course of his presidency. if a reconfigured high court did overturn rose versus wade, it would go back to the states which would then decide on abortion access. he is pledged to -- keep watching what happens to this guy there. knocks him right over.

here was quickly grabbed and taken away by campus police. the video was recorded by the university student newspaper. this anti-trump rally one of many that's been going on across the country since the election. ohio state university released a statement to students last week saying it actively protects first amendment rights, but the school also expressed concern about verbal assaults on campus following the presidential election. this morning president obama is in greece to kick off this video shows the president arriving at the airport in athens during the trip the president hopes to reassure america's allies. mr. obama scheduled to hold talks with the greek president and meet with the prime minister today. that session will be followed by a joint news conference with the other leaders. >> double dose of dirty dining.

>> this latest incident happened on november 8th. our iten found the state shut it down after finding live and dead roaches and sewage backing up. our wendy ryan spoke to the owner. he says the inspector is unfairly picking on his restaurant. he saw the sewage coming through the drains and immediately called the plumber who was working on it when the inspector arrived. the inspector closed that restaurant because of the health haza pete november 8th. inspectors saw more than 60 dead and live roaches there. a stop sale was also issued on cooked plantains, black beans and rice because they were kept at dangerous temperatures that could make you sick. the owner ramon senior hernandez told wendy his son manages pipos to go. ramon senior says he

them quote, a bottomless pit in 2007. 1200ups mechanics vote to go on strike and it could lead to a presidential order landing on donald trump's desk. the strike's not a done deal. it could take months before it actually happens. workers have to get the approval first of a federal mediator. if that happens they have to wait 30 more days before they strike, and then the president can order them back to work within minutes. the workers are protesting against three years without they'll reach a deal with those workers. coming up, what was supposed to be a nice meal out on veterans day quickly turned into a troubling experience for one of our nation's heroes. the confrontation that's now going viral. >> plus a racist post about michelle obama sparking a lot of backlash, the words written on facebook that may cost government officials their

the greater tampa chamber of commerce will honor veterans at the annual veterans ceremony november the 9th. it starts at 10 a.m. followed by lunch. in north tampa the veterans parade kicks off at 10 a.m.

annual veterans day services at curlew hills memory garden. it is 9:42 right now. a hateful facebook post by the director of a non-profit organization in west virginia is going viral. >> the woman who posted the message and the city mayor who commented on it are both receiving threats now. take a look, the director, her name is refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified first lady in the white house. i'm tired of seeing an ape in heels. the city's mayor replied just made my day pam. now the petition is calling for both women to be fired. it has more than 83,000 signatures. >> this is not the way i want my town portrayed. michelle obama's an articulate beautiful woman and referring to her as an ape in heels obviously is a racial slur.

she'll keep her job. she calls threats against her now hate crimes. she apologized but claims her post was not intended to be racist, and she was simply sharing her personal opinion of mrs. obama's attractiveness. the parent company of chili's restaurant is apologizing after a manager took a free meal away from an army veteran on veterans day, and the video of the confrontation is going viral. >> now you're grabbing my food away from me? oh, you're taking my food from me now. >> i'm so sorry. yes, i did just provide documents to you and they saw you. >> ernest welker posted this to his facebook page. he says the manager in this video questioned him after another diner suggested that he wasn't really a veteran. then he says the manager took his meal away even after he showed his military id. chili's executives say they fired that manager. he knew his exact chances

been doing that for a while into our winter season. however, we still have a couple of weeks of hurricane season, and we may be talking about tropical storm otto in the caribbean. so stand by for that. lets get you through our local weather here and we'll talk about that. temps in the mid and upper 60s. crystal river hanging on to 59. of course up there in the nature coast, we had upper 40s this morning. i think we'll do that again tomorrow morning, and a little bit more widespread. cloud cover acts as a blanket here and we had a lot of that this morning. we're by tomorrow morning. that will set the stage for cooler temperatures, and of course our front is well down to the south at this point here. we've just had some lingering clouds that have been rolling in from the gulf. north wind takes over and then we're done with the cloud cover and any chance of rainfall gone at this point here. we're looking just great, a lot of sunshine coming up. very chilly mornings i must say, but by the afternoons we're going to continue to warm things up. this is our tropical disturbance here. 80% chance of developing it from the national hurricane

next few days as it begins to coalesce. it looks pretty good for this to become a tropical storm. that would be otto as it heads importantly towards the north and east away from us. so i think we're in good shape. interesting across the western caribbean, at least a big rainmaker is what we're doing at this point. but the list continues to grow. it may just get down to otto here. of course our last couple of storms monsters here, which got us to an average season. in average, we're a tick higher than that with 14 storms, but 6 of those made it to hurricanes and as i mentioned 3 intense major hurricanes. so for today as we begin to warm things up in the mid-70s, tomorrow we wake up and we're going to be nice and cool or not so nice for some of us. zephyrhills there at 49, upper 50s in tampa, a little milder in st. pete. 75 will be the high today. i think we'll do better than

not just a slogan, the power of giving is something the ryan niece foundation believes in and passes on to the next generation. we're a few hours away from its thanksgiving celebration where they'll feed more than a thousand people, close to 200 volunteers will be there and among them local high school

they see and they feel firsthand the power of making a positive difference, the power that comes with giving back. we're delighted to have in our studios this morning the foundation founder and a friend to positivity tampa bay, mr. ryan niece. thank you for coming in. >> thanks for having me. >> i love all the stuff you do with the students who are involved in the program. tell us about them, how many and what's the feedback from them as they are now in year two right? >> yeah, the student service program is the bread and butter of our foundation, and what we're trying to do young teenagers how to embrace the power of giving. to do that we take them through a number of programs where we teach them the principles about being a service leader. we work with a number of organizations in our city to expand their mind, to understand the needs we have in our city so that hopefully through all of the program and through all of these lessons that when they get older they can become like you and start giving back to the community and understand the importance of the power of giving. >> this is not just a couple of

correct? >> they start their junior year. and then they become mentors their senior year to the next incoming students. not only are we doing things this tampa, we're doing things abroad, we've done things in flint michigan this past year. the most parent part is teaching these students the simple philosophies of how to be kind, how to think about others, how to be selfless, and through that you can truly make a difference in the lives of others. >> so you have the thanksgiving event is tonight. >> it is. >> anso we try to figure it out, but you know, it's with a lot of help of phenomenal volunteers and great sponsors. when you can convene a group of like-minded individuals to make a difference, you can really do something powerful. for us that's going to be feeding over a thousand people in a three to four-hour period of time, and really just loving on people, putting our arm around them, enjoying them and

what you're doing, help you fund all these programs? i know you have the party on december 1st. >> we have a great party, a holiday party that's, you know, the who's who of tampa come out. we have fun. hopefully you'll be there and the whole entire crew at abc will be there. they can come to our holiday parties. they can come to all the different areas for us to -- that we volunteer and all the programs. they can support us any way and every way possible. >> thank you, thank you ryan. it's always so nice to see you. >> tha with them, it's very easy. we'll have more information for you on our facebook as well.
