developing tonight, we are tracking an el nino storm that's expected to blow through central florida with severe thunderstorms, pouring rains and strong wind gusts, right now it's warm windy and starting to feel humid. but certified meteorologist george waldenberger is tracking a big storm over the gulf right now. george, this system means a threat of severe storms in central florida late tonight. >> yes, while you were sleeping. while we wait for it this evening, it will be dry and at least rain free. but the winds are picking up. it is warm out there. humidity is also picking up. the storm system still about

look -- and if you look close at it. it's taking on the comma shape which is familiar of springtime storm systems that move across the central plains. now this thing is cruising and overnight it moves into central florida. giving us our best chance or highest chance for severe thunderstorms between 2:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. watch what happens by 1:30 if you look at orlando, a few isolated storms developing but the main storm complex still well offshore from 1:30 to 3:00 a.m. the heavy rains push into central florida. and then the main storm complex arrives around 4:30. and it looks like it will exit by around 7:00 in the morning. there will be a severe weather threat as well including damaging winds and an isolated tornado risk that i'll talk about in 15 minutes. and just ahead i'll time out the storms county bicorn few and more on the severe weather -- by county and more on the severe weather threats overnight. be prepared for the storms overnight. download the free weather app to all the mobile devices and we have an el nino page on wftv.com to help you stay

tonight, but really all winter long. ken? developing tonight, investigators are searching for two suspects who were with a 17- year-old when investigators say he nearly hit an orlando police officer. we told you about the story as it was breaking on eyewitness news this morning. as channel 9's julie sal moan found out, trayvon lay monos is accused of trying to flee a traffic stop in a stolen car. >> reporter: orlando police said 17-year-old trayvon lamans it tried to hit an officer. it happened at the shopping plaza just after midnight. officer jonathan nils and another officer -- mills and another officer saw the teen reverse into a parking spot. instead of trapping and following police -- stopping and following police orders the teen accelerated and attempted to hit officer mills. >> if you're in trouble, you know, and you cause trouble, stop. you know? that's the only thing i can say is -- you got to pay the price.

and the other two suspects sped away from the shopping plaza and ended up in this neighborhood here on stony brook lane. they crashed the car right here and you can see the tire marks and then overthrow you can see where the car hit the shutters. shirley coburn lives in the neighborhood and said police knocked on her door around 1:00 a.m. and searched her backyard looking for the two other suspects. >> four or five of them and a k # dog too and they nook -- k-9 dog too and they knocked on the door and went around to the fenced yard. >> reporter: he faces several charges including grand theft of a motor vehicle. >> police don't get the respect that they deserve as far as i'm concerned. >> reporter: reporting in orlando, julie salmon, channel 9 eyewitness news. >> officer mills has been employed with the orlando police department since 2012. fdle investigated this morning which is protocol. osceola county deputies right now need your help finding a registered felon who is now accused of having sex

david brown's family members say he started harassing her a year ago. he is 50 years old and 6'0" tall weighing about 200 pounds. a cash reward for up to $1,000 is now being offered for information on brown's whereabouts. you can call the osceola county sheriff's office or crime line. we are asking investigators in volusia county how a man ended up in the st. john's river. dead. we covered this story yesterday afternoon while it was breaking. the body of 42-year-old walter mc-- walker mckin nonwas found in debary. on monday deputies say. the cause of death hasn't yet been released. and on orange county man could be back on the streets by this time tomorrow even though deputies think he's been involved in three different shootings since the beginning of january. the last night we told you the suspected shooter had been arrested. channel 9's phil sutton has been digging into the story of a delivery driver hurt by stray

and the judge said the man accused of shooting him could be able to bond out tomorrow. >> ken, that is what we heard and the hearing here at the orange county jail, we know the judge believes that there's a chance 22-year-old jay brown is a threat to the community. he's given the state 48 hours to prove it. we found out jay brown's appearance in front of the orange county judge is the latest in a ten year history of arrests for burglary, theft, drugs, and weapons violations starting when brown was just 12 years old. tonight he's in the orange county jail accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm and improperly exhibiting firearms. >> according to these allegations he's been involved in three different shooting ain't accidents. -- incidents, since the first of january? >> reporter: there's no charges in the shootings. by default a judge would typically grant bail for the charges that are charged in this case but the state is asking the judge to consider what happened to 21-year-old

>> i finally got through to his stepmother. and she was hysterical. and said he was shot. but she didn't know anything. >> reporter: peck's uncle tells us his nephew was caught in gun crossfire. >> when you just start shooting out in the air everywhere and you -- you totally changed somebody's life. >> reporter: deputies say brown is the one who shot peck. and according to a last-minute filing from prosecutors, there were two other times just in the last two weeks when brown fired a gun at someone else. >> mr. brown certainly appears to be an ongoing threat and danger to the community as a whole. >> reporter: well, the state of course still has to prove that brown is a threat. if indeed he is, prosecutors are going to be back in a jail courtroom tomorrow morning trying to prove that he has no business getting out of here. and we'll let you know what happens. live in orange county, field sutton, channel 9 eyewitness news. two men accused of attacking an 85-year-old woman during a home invasion are

this is a sketch of one of the two suspects. police say they locked woman in her bathroom and neighbors say they noticed the crooks in the woman's garage and confronted them. we spoke with the man who got a look at one of the suspects as he chased him through his yard. >> so he came and hit the gate here. and just jumped right over it. well, when he did that, the motion light went off. so when the other guy -- he -- stopped here at the gate. he looked back at me and i just got a quick glimpse of him. >> during our interview with richard sylvester he noticed a hammer that may have been left behind by the suspects, detectives are now analyzing it for fingerprints, an inmate died. the name of the 6 #-year- old inmate won't be released until his family is notified. police say a guard found him unresponsive in his solitary confinement cell last night. he was alone and monitored

well, tonight in central florida we brace for some strong storms late tonight and many people in southwest florida are picking up the pieces after an ef1 tornado tore through parts of fort myers. you can see the damage left behind by the powerful twister. winds that were so strong, they ripped the roof off at least one building leaving behind a path of destruction. >> i've never been through a tornado so i was very skyed. >> in a matter of seconds a tornado left behind so much damage it will take days to clean up. decks and staircases were ripped from the walls at one apartment complex in lee county. >> and then i heard like the freight train moving through and then -- that was it. and it was really quick. >> at least three buildings in this complex had to be condemned.

and be in the bathroom at the same time. but the power kept going on and off. >> the pool building was destroyed and half the structure was thrown several feet. >> the pool is just destroyed the pool area. >> wind gusts were estimated to be as strong as 100 miles per hour. >> we got a good part of the tornado. if we didn't get the full brunt of it. it was -- very, very bad. >> not surprisingly despite all the damage, no one was hurt. this is an el nino storm system the same one ha rolled through yesterday -- that rolled through yesterday. we get another one tonight and this will be a repeating pattern to be seen several times all the way through winter. ken? >> a full scale space shuttle mock-up in brevard county is getting a new home. the shuttle to tomorrow is becoming a part of an educational mission. this morning, it took four hours to barge that model across the indian river to a refurbishment facility on merit island.

prisoner swap. the now free captives include a marine veteran, a "washington post" journalist a christian pastor and a college student. they're being swapped for seven iranians being held here. today iran was also -- also found in compliance with the nuclear agreement and in exchange the white house and european union lifted some sanctions against iran. right now the state's second python challenge season is underway. it started today at noon. more than 500 people have registered to look for pythons across the everglades. wildlife experts say burmese pythons are a threat to native wildlife and also want to study the snakes. in the last hunt in 2013, they killed 68 snakes and this year's challenge ends on february 14th. just a tablespoon of water is causing major concern tonight for astronauts aboard the international space station. yesterday morning, nasa

a cooling loop in his helmet was leaking. crews didn't want to repeat a mission that happened in 2013 that almost saw italian iss engineer luka parmitano drown from two quarts of water that flooded his space helmet. >> luka went out twice. in the first time he went without. he had -- out. he had attainer his helmet -- water in his helmet then. >> during the mission yesterday he was never in that degree of danger. and georgia's back -- george is back here. george we are watching a severe line soft storms moving -- of storms moving into our area that's going to hit overnight. >> strong thunderstorms overnight and we need to watch these very closely. first off here are the risks especially between 2:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. while many -- a.m. while many people are sleeping, the thunderstorms develop and we have a high risk for damage winding winds with -- winds with thunderstorms in that time frame. also the tornado risk, we have an isolated risk for tornadoes as well.

lightning and an inch of heavy rain. in a mobile home. maybe call up the friend who lives in a sturdier structure and spends the night there. we're going to be watching this all night. right now and most of the evening we're dry. the winds a little breezy and temperatures are warm. we're already seeing the clouds stream in from the west. and there's the storm system there. you can see it the comma shape. again familiar with mid latitude storms. you can also see the jet stream energy shown by the clouds there. now both the features, the low and the jet stream, will come together right over florida of night. and -- overnight. and the storms will develop again the strongest storms between 2:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. so let's time it out. again dry this evening. it's after 1:00 we start to see the isolated storms develop. notice the main batch still over the gulf at this point. few more isolated storms develop ahead of the storm system. these thunderstorms that develop ahead of the main storm system have a risk that they may rotate. this is when we have a threat
