3:35 am
with channel 9 and our weather app. so don't rely on your weather radio at this point, because they have an outage. right now only one warning, but we're on the air, because we're going to have more. this red area is a tornado watch until 8:00 in the morning.
3:36 am
together for a tornado to develop, as a already has happened down in southwest florida, along siesta key, as we get more information on that, we'll be passing that along. you can see there's a tornado warning right now that is going to be south of tampa. so this cell will work into parts of polk county very shortly. it will be on the south side of i-4, moving towards fort meade. it will keep rolling. one of the traits of el nino storms are long track tornadoes. something that has the potent to be stay on the ground, or come up and down in its evolution for quite a while. so a lot going on towards fort meade, tiger bay. tornado warning until 4:00 for that cell. central florida, once we get north into polk county, it becomes our responsibility here. we'll get into ross osceola.
3:37 am
coverage area, polk, osceola, brevard. i think that will be be the highest risk in the next hour for damaging thunderstorm winds out of that particular storm cell. but a lot of rain and wind is preceding this. i think i have a wider shot of a storm in the gulf of mexico to show you why this is happening the way it's happening. this is is part of a much larger storm complex still developing out in the gulf of mexico. this is a big storm, and it's right over here, and it's moving onshore and taking all it. so that's why the tornado watch south for all of central florida and south florida until 8:00. but for our purposes, that's it. that's what we've got. so that's going to move rapidly through between now -- what time is it? 3:37. between now and around 5:36, brian, so that's why we're concerned that that whole cell is going to bring a lot of wind
3:38 am
>> and we're also getting reports 0 of one-inch hail. >> that means a very tall storm. >> and a lot of energy, just keeps building up. this is intensifying in lake county. it's important to realize right around clermont, this thunderstorm is the next thunderstorm we're going to be watching as it drifts across the turnpike in lake county a around the areas of howie and the hills, and then pushes into northern orange county and the mount dora area. so right now, no severe thunderstorm warning on that, but this did move out of sumter county where we had that first warning.
3:39 am
gain, dobbs watch in effect for all of central florida through 8:00 in the morning. this is the winds inside this particular storm, and this -- all of this red is all wind blowing in from the south. so we're starting to get lots
3:40 am
kind of in an elongated area of winds right on the sumter and lake county lines. county. just battennen down the hatches, because we're going to get more of this wind blowing on through, and, brian, that cell is going to keep on moving. >> yeah, and i wanted to get into northern lake county. we talk about the el nino seasons back in 18998, 2007. this is similar. back in 2007, unfortunately, we had over 20 lives lost, i want to show you right now, not a is a is veer is storm, but heavy rain. this is where we mad a couple of tornado paths stripe by. very hivy rain here. however, let's pa broaden out again, the storms that are back down toward the southwest are generally headed in that kind of training direction there.
3:41 am
which could produce an isolated tornado or wind damage. that is warned on. but there is no official warning for lake county, is there? >> not now. just umpire is and poke for now. -- umpire is and polk for now -- just sumter and polk for now. all of this is evolving. going. this environment down here, not as worked over. you get these individual cells out ahead of it. again, it's these individual cells that have been showing signs of spinning. rolling right into polk county, and then they'll head towards the attractions, disney, kissimmee, celebration, we'll be watching you, too, over
3:42 am
county. so we have a lot of time to stay with you and watch these, but that's the general path up to the northeast. you can see a track over toward winter haven, and this one at 28. this is the cell here that did produce a confirmed tornado, structural damage over towards sarasota, as that came on shore. units are still responding to that in sarasota. a lot of scanner chatter about structural damage. we're watching out for the storms both south and north of it, as well. >> yeah, to let you know, brian, there is apparently a confirmed tornado on the ground right now, with that particular storm that you were just talking about. so, again, central florida right now is storm arey, windy
3:43 am
if you don't have to get out and travel, like an early trip down toward tampa or miami, probably best to curtail that right now, because storms are going to continue to just blow through, and you don't want to be out on the road when we have things moving at 65 miles an hour. but this whole area is all prime. we have all this open real estate here, the dewpoints have come up, the energy levels are going up. so especially, i would say, probably orlando south, this whole corridor in the next 60 minutes, we're definitely going to 0 have to watch. >> we've got so much energy, and it just continually building as this storm system moves into our neck of the woods. and we know this is going to continue to follow in that line, going straight through. so really going to have to watch as it continues to move. and it's quick-moving, so it just continues to build speed arizona it moves up towards the northeast. >> yeah, and confirmed tornado damage earlier today from this
3:44 am
this is going to make a lot of progress. this is essentially moving at fryway speeds, 65 miles an hour. it will go to wins, and event point stephen here. here in some of the language being put out. flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelt person mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. damage to windows, vehicle damage will occur.
3:45 am
so if you're in a mobile home, you want to think about taking shelter else where. that's sort of the new thing, to find somewhere else to be, a sturdier structure. we have that confirmed tornado now moving into southern polk county. so you want to be in a safe area. if you can hearis now, you're watching us on abcactionnews.com -- wftv.com. and eventually, this cell, down the road, we'll see how it hangs together, but it will move up toward winterhaven, and eventally over towards celtics
3:46 am
-- celebration and kissimmee. >> right now, this is the big boy. this has already done damage in today. we have another cell near the inglewood area. these are beautiful places, if you've ever been down there, brunt of this. this will be moving towards the lake wales area. winterhaven, eventually point sienna. we can't quite put you in the
3:47 am
osowoski, because it's still -- osceola, because it's still a long ways away. if you're just joining us, we're live here on channel 9. there's a tornado watch for all of us until 8:00 in the morning, although now this 3:49. the biggest threat for us will really be between now and around 6:00 in the morning, because everything is moving very, very fast. we're moving at 65 miles an hour, and that cell right there, that's where we have a tornado warning out now for southwestern parts of polk correspondent, that's all moving most. >> this is a radar indicated tornado warning at this point,
3:48 am
the confirmed tornado near secaucus -- siesta key. but right now that tornado is likely as it pushes into polk county, and hillsborough county. winterhaven, maybe even portions of likes maybe even portions of lake wales. >> that's why we continue to warn those folks that are not in the warning area yet, because this is moving very fast, and you could be in the warning area in the next 30 to 45 areas. >> and remember last night, the strongest risk for some of 0 the tornadoes and the strongest storms was orlando and south, and now we're watching this cluster of thunderstorms push into the tampa area, and push on to the sunshine coast south of tampa. these will be building south of
3:49 am
so that's why the focus was sports talk south, because this is kind of the bull's-eye at this point. the dynamics are just in place right now for this to build. and this is the worst possible time. it's overnight, saturday into sunday. a lot of folks are sleeping. unfortunately the weather radios are down now at the national weather service, so hopefully you've downloaded our app, because that will continue to go off for any watches or warnings that are issued, so you want to make sure that you are right on top of this, as this continues to become a threatening situation. tom? >> yeah, there are several transmitters. it's, i believe, channel 4. but
3:50 am
maybe can find another one. if you hear it talking to you, that's a sign you've found a signal. but just watch what we're doing here for now. we'll be your weather source for you. but if you have to abandon ship to get into the safe part of your home, you can always take our app along with you with our live stream. i want to show you the storm track on this particular cell as it moves toward the north and east at 65 miles a an hour. so forms,
3:51 am
center -- if this does hold together, we're going to get some wind energy moving through polk, osceola county, and we also have additional storms bringing some very strong gusty winds, but not the tornado threat that we have down here in our southern zones right now. anytime you see red, that's a sign of spinning near the ground. again, that flow is racing northeast. so we're going to be watching our southern -- yeah, there
3:52 am
runway. we will continue to monitor these storms coming on shore from the gulf of mexico, because that's going to be the tornado zone down in southwest florida, and i do think they're are going to continue to rotate. i don't see any reason they're not, as they move across polk, osceola county. >> and we're just looking at that new cell here off the gulf that is starting to rotate right off there, and that's just south of the area that confirmed the tornado. >> leave that source up right there. i want to show you something. we see the purple right there, the magenta. that is actually -- the program was written so that if it says confirmed tornado, or tornado spotted, in other words not
3:53 am
actuallile is a tornado on the ground, you'll see these purple areas, so we see some kind of confirmed tornado in that area, that's moving into parts of polk county, and these over here, these little triangles upside down tell me there is definitely some tornadoic spin with these cells. we've had tornado warnings up and down the coast, and you can see that trajectory will move that into parts of polk county, so this is going to be a mess here, george. >> yeah, and a really fascinating part about this. ium last saturday night, we had a warning for cape coral here, and then on friday, this is a about 7 miles a away in fort myers, we had another tornado that produced damage, and here we are late saturday night into sunday morning, tornadoes are developing, and new ones are building south toward cape coral. so it's possible we could get another tornado to hit cape coral this morning.
3:54 am
10-mile radius in a little over a week. this is kind of like tornado alley right here over the past week. and, you know, once we're done with this storm system, we have another one on friday. all right, here is a cross- section of that thunderstorm. look at the height here. 50,000 feet. now we're looking at velocities. >> you have some really strong wind, allle the way up to 20,000 feet there. >> yeah. so upper level and lower level, winds heading into the radar. the reds are are away from the radar, so we're getting the rotation right about here. pretty high. we've had some hail issues, or at least some warnings based on hail, as well, earlier. look at all of these boxes, though, tom. confirmed tornado. this one thunderstorm produced a confirmed tornado in three separate counties. the latest in polk county. warning. >> yeah, they're are just lining up. and again, that one you
3:55 am
that's a confirmed tornado. someone saw this, the one moving into melky county. >> which is tough, late at night, you have to use the lightning to see the tornado. maybe some transformers blowing. particularly dangerous situation. >> yeah, we don't get too much verbiage like that. last time we had this was back in 2007, so that kind of verbiage. >> yeah, and this kind, a confirmed large and dangerous tornado. a lot of times we have warnings issued based on radar indicated, but there it is, our third confirmed tornado, pushing into polk county. there it is.
3:56 am
anytime you have a history like this, it's kind of the only game in town at the moment, as far as the tornado potential. >> look at that cruising, going a around 60 miles an hour. that put put us in . sienna in less than a half hour. so here is i-4, orlando, lake land, this is the thunderstorm with the confirmed tornado reports in southwest polk county. this heading towards haines city in 20 minutes, and point sienna in 29 minutes. so now is the time to did download that wspa -- wf tv weather app, if you don't have it. with that, you can watch this broadcast right any your smartphone. i would say this would be in kissimmee in 35 to 40 minutes if it can hold together. some # sometimes storms like this will cycle through. they'll produce a tornado, and then the thunderstorm will
3:57 am
we'll see another one develop. >> can you pop up the weather app graphic? i want to show some folks how to use it, if you don't have that weather app, because it's very important. should be in the show there. now, here is the app itself. now, at the bottom of the app, you go to that alerts tab, right on that bottom window, there's an alerts tab right there, and then that kind of setting wheel will come up, it will be on the bottom right, and you click on it, and you can toggle off and on the warnings you want. so it will go off for a tornado warning or watch, whatever you have it set for. it's a free app, search wftv in your store, go to the alerts tab, and then there's that wheel, click on that, and you can toggle things a enough. we track this confirmed tornado heading into polk county. you see all of these warnings that have been issued one after are another, and, again, moving right into bartow.
3:58 am
us there, and i know our signal
