we are a few degrees, if not several degrees cooler now than this time yesterday, our satellite picture, mostly clear, we have high clouds, which are streaming in from the south. and that thin blanket of cloud cover will help a little bit, but still awfully chilly tonight. down into the low 40s by 6:00 o'clock in the morning. up in marion county a light freeze possible, 31 in citrus, 32 in ocala, i don't have a freeze advisory yet officially for marion county but be advised, you'll be close. 39 in orlando for the first time this season. so the cold just starting to settle in. i'm updating even colder weather for tomorrow night, just ahead, greg. many of you watching now depend on weather radios and severe weather center 9 to get your warnings about severe weather, but the federal transmitter went down before the same storms that brought tornadoes to southwest florida arrived here in central florida over the weekend. why this happened to the transmitter and if it could happen again, and you've learned

all of those people at risk. >>reporter: greg, the national weather service told me that a those phone lines do provide audio to that transmit e so when those phone lines went out, they were unable to send out alerts and updates to residents like those that live right here in county. >> it's not a good situation when that prime marry information source goes down. >>reporter: noaa weather radio was down for the majority of sunday and the meteorologist says in central florida, residents were under a severe thunderstorm watch but were unail to receive alerts and warns from the national weather service on their weather radios. >> a dangerous scenario, because weather radios can be the first public. >>reporter: but for residents in six central central florida counties, the first line of information was off line. >> if we can get to the bottom of why it wasn't working, and who is accountable for that. >>reporter: the noaa weather

after 10:00 last night. i reached out to find out what went wrong. verizon phone lines supplied by at&t, were down. they were unable to tell us why they went down but urged residents to always have a secondary source to be able to receive weather information. one being our wftv weather app and watching eyewitness news for doppler 9 radar. >> it's located very close to the metro, which is important, because that will allow us to see some storms at very low can't. >>reporter: and the national weather service did tell us that they did not have anyone to speak to us today because this was a holiday. they also said that they did not know why those phone lines initially went out. we are still gathering more information on this story, and when we get that, we will be sure to bring it right back to you, be sure to follow all of our weather updates on the wfttv

the same dangerous storms that swept through here yesterday morning swanked deadly tornadoes in southwest florida. we're learning how terrible as you can see there, the tornadoes were. the national weather service now confirms that three separate tornadoes. they were killed when the mobile home was ripped apart,. >> amazed to see that anybody got out of this alive. you look at the debris behind us, complete devastation for this home. >> 7 other people were injured. the red cross has stepped in to help the others. governor rick scott toured the damage yesterday, which is estimated now to be about 3 million dollars. now, this was a third round of tornadoes to hit southwest florida in about a week. officials are attributing the storm to the el nino winter weather, which we've been seeing here in our area. this afternoon, we're

the police about whether they have any suspects in a frightening home invasion. state road 50 in john young parkway, at the wrong address. channel 9 has been at the home all at a and the mother inside told you that the men threatened her kids and demanded money. >>reporter: she said it was confusing and terrifying, because those men who had assault rifles kept demanding things and even saying you know why we're here. but this afternoon, even police say the men who walked through the door at this home, were in the wrong house. friends stood guard in the driveway of the home after orlando police say two men threatened a mother and her kids overnight. in a hope invasion that police believe was targeting the wrong house. >> a knock at the door, and a familiar name of -- one of my neighbors, i thought it was my neighbor coming back over. >>reporter: the woman held at gunpoint inside was too frightened to show her face. but two men with assault rifles forced their way into her home after midnight.

11-year-old daughter and money. >> i said, i don't know what you're talking about. you know what i'm talking about. he held the gun to my baby was like, i'm going to kill them. >>reporter: since the scene cleared overnight, we haven't seen any detectives come by the home and the family and worried and frustrated that the men responsible may not be caught. . >> they drew guns, and they wanted to shoot my granddaughter. she just 11 years old. >>reporter: really a terrifying situation. witnesses say that the men got away in an older model gray chevy ill pal la. now, we also spoke to that grandmother, who you just heard from, she told us that is not the first time that her family home invasion. we're going through that sper 5:00. channel 9, eyewitness news. you can share this story and help investigators get the word

new this hour, lake county temperaturetys say a -- deputies say a missing person has turned into a suspicious death investigation. they told channel 9 they found human remains in that missing man's yard in paisley. deputies aren't sure if those remains are the missing man? >>reporter: and they can't say that just yet, until the medical examiner makes a derp nation, but they -- determination, but they did bring a cadaver dog out here who found the remains buried in this backyard. and what deputies are saying tonight is that multiple neighbors out here haven't seen this homeowner in more than a month. >> obviously the fact that remains are here at his house, and he's not been accounted for in quite sometime, we are looking to determine whether or not that is him. >>reporter: as deputies brought out a body uncovered by a cadaver dog, neighbors confirmed they'd not seen 61-year-old dennis jones in weeks.

say a woman and her children who were staying there, said jones went away for a while. >> a friend of ours said he was in rehab. >>reporter: another concerned neighbor called the authorities last night and they began to search for jones. >> about 8:30 p.m., deputies responded out here to try to make contact with the home own e he wasn't located. no sign of him. his car wasn't in the driveway. >>reporter: turns out, his car was discovered about a half mile down the road in front of jim gordon's house. >> apparently, he give the truck to a woman he had working for hip, doing his paperwork -- him, doing his paperwork and bills. >>reporter: gordon says jones sometime. night. deputies are working to find out how it got here and if remains in jones yard are his. and we are leshing now, about some -- learning now about some charges jones has faced in the last couple of years and going through some more of those interviews with the neighbors, we'll have both of those coming up for you tonight at 5:00

that families don't know about. >>reporter: volunteers spent the day giving out these door hangs to let them know that they can get some free tax preparation. >> you'd be surprised how many people do not know about the earned income tax credit. >>reporter: they are trying to spread the word about what's called the earned income tax credit a big bonus on your tax return that means thousands of dollars for many people. >> around $6,000 that they can get for the earned income tax credit. again, it's based on your income and the number of people in your household and then just getting the free tax preparation can save you several hundred dollars right there. >>reporter: every year, the heart of florida united way beefs up the phone banks so taxpayers can call for lots of free information and possibly free tax prep services. they use data from those phone calls to target local neighborhoods. >> we target apartment complexes, and we have one or two housing neighborhoods that are based on their zip code, and their areas and the number of

trying to fiep out what sparked this fire this weekend. cathy is at the scene now, and a city leader told you that the bidding had been an issue for years. >>reporter: leesburg mayer told me the building had been condemned and the city had been working towards this year. it came down on saturday night. the firefighters got here within five minutes of the call and able to protect this tank and these fuel tanks from the heat. the flames and smoke could be seen for miles away. the deputy fire chief said when firefighters got here, it was already full blown. the big concerns, obviously were the fixed fuel tank, the fuel truck and the electric lines running close to the building, i was scary for the people who live in the neighborhood across the street.

my find mind kept going back -- my mind kept going back over, what if, you know, what if there had been an explosion, i was at work, i wouldn't have been at home. i have a dog. >>reporter: today, there is crime scene tape up. the cause of the fire is undetermined and under a leesburg police lieutenant told channel 9 there's been almost a half dozen code issues with the property, we tried to look at the records on the police department website, but it was down. we asked property owner william floyd about that. >> code lady -- she told us to do something, we did it >>reporter: floyd told us he has no insurance on the property that the state fire marshal investigators asked him not to talk about the fire. take a look at these tanks that the firefighters were able to protect, the flames and heat getting to. we saw the fire trucks passing by here to keep an eye on things here, the state

sent an innocent driver, ducking for cover. >> heard the gun and another loud noise with my window exploding. >> and this afternoon, he's talking to channel 9 about how close he came to being shot. >> nervous, didn't know what was going to happen after that. that man says it's amazing he survived at a bullet came within inches of his head. >> he was out at the new club mango's along busy i drive friday night, but when he left and ended up waiting at a red light, he says he was nearly killed when bullets started flying. >> you know how busy this area can get with traffic from i drive, and i-4. this is the red light the victim says he was at when he heard a gunshot, and then glass shattering. the victim's jeep grand cherokee is missing, the tinted window he says was shot out after a night out at mango's nightclub on international drive. >> we heard a loud noise, a gunshot, and then the rear car. glass went flying.

unclear whether he was a target or an innocent bistand when someone opened fire near the tourist dis trikt around 1:30 saturday morning. >> people all over the streets, there was a lot of cars and traffic, really busy. and then, we realized we were in danger, we got shot at. >>reporter: that bullet smashes through this back passenger window and light right there, into this panel. this is where the bullet exited and he's a couple of inches taller than i am. so imagine that bullet flying right over his head, and hitting the dashboard. >> about an inch above my head, really scary, it got even scaryier. >>reporter: he's hoping that someone saw something. >> you always hear about it, those people were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but you never think it will happen like that, in orlando in a tourist area. >>reporter: channel 9 eyewitness news. no one was hurt from the gunfire, at this point, it does

worked any other shootings in the area that happened the same night. a couple of teenagers accused of beating another teenager with a you bar, 18-year-old dillon thomas with 19-year-old rebecca and jesse face charges for attacking 17-year-old daniel with a you bar in his own driveway before school. the teenagers targeted him because they thought he stole marijuana from them. it happened last february in satellite beach. he will be in court. more national guard troops are on the ground in flint, michigan because of the toxic level of lead in the water supply. more troops arrived to hand bottled water to families. it became contaminated with lead after it switches the supply to the flinth river water. the issue was brought up today by hillary clinton during a martin luther king, jr. day event in south carolina.

senator gerald dean thompson's bill came to light last month. a volusia man accused of killing a hurt and hurting the rider is back in jail. christopher todd was charged last february for ramming his it. the ride suffered a broken collarbone. deputies found marijuana in his car during a traffic stop last week. the horse case goes to trial next month. volusia county officials are expected to discuss a temporary problem. thursday, the volusia county manager will propose leezing or purchasing a vacant property on north street. the plan is asking for fencing the property. some neighborhoods, certified chief meteorologist tom terry is keeping an eye on how cold it will get where you live from

temperatures. the season's first measurable snowfall along the east coast and i-95 corridor. >> the snow drought is officially over from d.c. to new york city and boston. some areas getting up to 2 feet of snow, making this the first and largest snowfall of the season. near buffalo, they are used to the snow, this latest round caught some residents off guard. >> there was actually nothing here, i mean, there was grass, you could see green grass on my lawn yesterday. it started yesterday afternoon around 4:00 o'clock. morning. >>reporter: the bitter snow and cold created a mess on the highways. leaving some drivers stuck in a ditch. meanwhile rs freezing temperatures and icy roads are blamed for this 14-car pile up near new york city overnight. out in minnesota, it is so cold, a meteorologist showed you can freeze a t-shirt in minutes. it was even colder in north dakota over the weekend, with the wind chill feeling like minus 50 degrees. >> no thanks.

that winter storm expected to pass on through by midweek. don't forget, you can always get weather alerts, right on your smartphone, just make sure you download the free wftv weather app, greg. the coast guard says sunday morning's severe storms is the worst ever in the gulf of mexico, and they had to rescue two men from a boat ft a storm tore the sails and here's video of it. and cracked the hull on the victim's boat, this is how they rescued him with a helicopter. they were taking on water in the 20 foot sea. you can see one of the people being brought up with the life vest and helicopter. that video tells the story. a march and rally at south carolina's capitol is one of many ways people across the king, jr. day. >> several democratic presidential candidates also took time to remember doctor king's legacy. >> and today, we remember all of his achievements.

activists use this holiday to push for the removal of the confederate flag from capitol grounds. hillary clinton used that fight in her repens of doctor king today. >> because that flag was just one piece of something bigger. doctor king died with his work unfinished. and it is up to us to see it through. >> the flag was finally removed from the south carolina capitol last summer in the wake of a racially motivated shooting, at a charleston church which killed 10 people. the unity parade in honor of doctor king, dancing, marring bands, motorcycles and -- marching bands and motorcycles and floats. came toen a end at the west oaks mall. orlando civil rights leader spoke during the celebration. one of the conjoined twins in jacksonville is headed home

they were born in may of last year. today, family members say he will be discharged later this week and carter will stay at the hospital. and family members are hopeful he'll join his brother home soon. a group to clean up lake apopka has reached a midway point. in august, how allied group was used compressed air to clean up a 250 acre portion of lake apopka. so far, they say it's working by breathing life back into bacteria infested lake beds. had is the latest in tefrts to tourism. improvements are in the works to make ormd beach water front. on the east side of the park. the new dock will cost about $600,000, and will allow larger ormond beach city cleeders have had to -- leaders have had to apply for two grants to build the dock. deltona people have -- the
