>> a dramatic drop in - - chopper video was taken - - is taking us inside the takedown of two teenagers accused of ambushin families at home, they forced their way inside and stole money and guns. tonight it appears to be just a random crime and those suspects did not give out without a fight. police tried to take them down and the intruders took off and crashed their car near a zoo in melbourne. melanie talks to people who live in that neighborhood and they don't recall anything happening like this ever. >> reporter: police got that call just after 11:30 last night. a police officer was responding and spotted the suspects vehicle and instead of pulling over, the suspect fled.

unit caught the moment the suspect crashed their vehicle at the zoo and found they had no place left to run. >> he is coming up to a big group of trees. you've got it. >> reporter: it all began on rock ledge where a family was ambushed as they returned home on thursday night. they describe the gunmen who approached them and force them down on the ground in their house. - - he forced them down on the ground. >> no one was injured but the homeowner did not want to talk about the incident on camera. his neighbors were relieved that the suspects, and 18-year- old and 19-year-old, are already in custody. >> a lot of people like that do not get caught right away.

and one of them is a convicted felon and now they face charges. police are still trying to recover one of the stolen weapons. a pair of burglars who attacked an 85-year-old woman burglary. the suspect is still on the loose and police believe he ransacked the home while the homeowner was away. the elderly woman who was attacked just lives three blocks away. park rangers are searching for a missing man, 58-year-old ronald weber.

near the trail. it has been three years since this woman disappeared. we looked into what local agencies are doing in order to bring closure to the families. >> reporter: 10 years and no answer for jennifer's parents, but they are not alone in their pain. a pair of other women have familiar faces but their cases remain a mystery. >> reporter: i want - - tracy

leaving with her husband james. he has never been charged with her disappearance but is in jail for the murder of another woman. and a team of - - in the case of michelle parker is still very active. parker disappeared in november 2011 after dropping off her twins with their father who is the main suspect. this week was m ichelle's 30th birthday and this flyer was posted on social media. on the anniversary of her disappearance, her mother posted a a line that resonates with the families, time may heal the emotions but the scar remains.

these missing women. of course this is all on our website, to take a closer look, go to the slideshow shut - - section of our website. millions of people are in the path of a massive snowstorm and a state of emergency has been declared in six states tonight. the eye of the blizzard is expected to hit and snow is blanketing the capital and it is getting pretty deep already. >> reporter: the snow just kicked into high gear and it has gotten worse. you can tell there is more snow on the ground and the roads. city leaders are urging people to stay off of the road and stay home for a a couple of days. the snow is coming down heavily in the first wave started around 1:00. city leaders told residents to find a safe spot by 3:00 and

weekend. >> hunkered down, shelter in place, stay off of the roads. >> reporter: 2 feet of snow is likely but the beginning of this blizzard was so pretty, nina rushed over to take pictures. >> a couple feet is not a big thing. >> reporter: the tour buses were still running but there were no tourists inside of them. schools were closed in anticipation of the blizzard and federal employees were released at noon. mary is rushing home from work and doesn't expect to be going anywhere for a while. >> i'm just going to stay home and turn up the heat and watch the movies. >> reporter: thousands of people have converged on washington for the watch for life. >> we were scheduled to leave

we are scheduled for sunday but that will probably be canceled as well. >> reporter: as the sun is going down, conditions are getting ugly. they are expecting 30 inches of snow and we are just getting started with only an inch or two on the ground. please heed the warning, stay- at-home, this is expected to get worse before it gets better. >> justin, thank you. 22 states are bracing for a snowstorm. >> 70 million people are in the path and this could be the worst storm this country has seen in 90 years, expected to dump 36 inches of snow. six states have already declared states of emergency.

companies over who will fix it. the work is supposed to be done by early february. a commissioner wanted to discuss the problems of a new trash collection system. commissioner boyd has requested time to talk about the recent transition to a new system, and it has been rocky at best. we told you about the problems since they began january 1st. we discovered a letter written by a teacher who would lead divorce allegedly rubbed the backs of his students and let them sit on his lap. julie read through the letter, he is actually apologizing for his actions. >> the now retired teacher told us into thousand nine that he took full responsibility and admitted he put his hands on the backs of students. this week, donald sharp was

a girl told police he had her sit on his lap in the third grade and the teenager said he sexually molested her four times. eyewitness news received 170 pages documenting his history with the school district where he used to work. one document stated the principle was aware he was allegedly allowing students to sit on his lap while he read from the dictionaries. he stated it was only a few students, but from student statements, it appeared it was common practice for him. pointed out that parents were contacted but did not want their children removed from the classroom and the investigation did not continue, but he was reprimanded. in 2009, and allegedly incident happened where he put a bread bag in a girls pocket and slapping him on the bottom - - her on the bottom.

wrote to officials - - exclaiming - - explaining that he was teaching a reading lesson and put his hands on a students back. he apologized for the situation saying it cause confusion and chaos. the district had to contract investigate. a letter showed school officials found his actions inappropriate and he was eventually asked not to return as a teacher. a charter school teacher is facing backlash over a lesson about racism. >> i think she just did it with the wrong group of children. some of this viral video could cost a resident her job. and uber response to her aggressive behavior toward one of their drivers.

we were the first to expose the staggering number of people with mental illness serving time in jail with as many as 130,000 people in jail right now with mental illness. and a major group is pushing for change, saying local taxpayers are take - - paying too much into this system. >> there are good days and bad days for residents. today is a good day.

>> reporter: when he is not on his medication, law enforcement is often called to deal with him. >> he needs mental health help and not jail. behind this razor wire, one third of the inmates have diagnosed mental problems. the money could be used to send them to a treatmentcenter if it is - - if it existed. but it doesn't. the florida association of counties is renewing preventative mental health programs. they say they have bounced their budget by passing the buck . - - balanced their budget and passing the buck. >> they need to be receiving real care. >> reporter: lawmakers

none of them passed. 250 miles away, this woman is waiting for her brother to come home and waiting for the next call she has to make to try to get him help and hoping that call does not let him hear. the governor has recommended $19 million for rental health this year. comparing florida to texas, they added to $40 million to get the mental health budget on track and they faced many of the same problems we have right here. three people are behind bars for an armed robbery. you might remember this video showing the robbers before they went into the store. the robbed the discount beverage store last saturday. robbery. >> more people flew in and out

it feels like 34 degrees, at least a 10-degree difference in the morning. lower to middle 40s because the cold air is just arriving tonight, but it will blow in all day tomorrow. this is the actual temperature, at 2:00, 50 degrees. coldest temperatures of the season, and the wind will make it feel even colder. 40s for much of the day tomorrow. tomorrow night, if you are going out, it is jacket time for sure. this is my outlook for saturday night, everybody is in the 30s or colder. the wind will stay up a little bit.
