the longest serving justice of the u.s. supreme court has died. the debate in washington over who will take his place. antonin scalia has died at the age of 79. he has been a supreme court justice since ronald regan appointed him in 1986. his death leaves the high court without its conservative majority, setting up a confrontation for his replacement. >> reporter: associate justice

apparent natural causes at a resort in west texas. he reportedly died in his sleep on the trip, found dead this morning when he didn't show up for breakfast. president obama said this about the justice. >> justice scalia dedicated his life to the corner stone of our democracy, the rule of law. tonight we honor his extraordinary service to our nation and remember one of the towering legal figures of our time. >> reporter: scalia's death leaves president obama weighing when to nominate a successor, a decision that sparked a political struggle drawing in congress and the presidential candidates. >> getting nominated to the supreme court is the culmination of a dream, of course. and i'm greatly honored that the president would have such confidence in me. >> reporter: the immediate impact of his death for the current term means the justices will now be divided 4-4. if

lower court opinion remains in place. cases where the current court was expected to split 5-4 include disputes over abortion and immigration policy. tonight mitch mcconnell and the republican presidential candidates ted cruz and marco rubio say the nomination should fall to the next president. it would be unprecedented in recent history for the court to have a vacancy for the entire year. justice scalia leaves behind a wife and nine children. we have much more on his life's work. click his story on the home page. here in central florida, the man suspected in a triple shooting that left a local college student dead is now in place. we first brought you this story as it was breaking on eyewitness news this morning. we

you starting with mike man01i who spent out police spent several hours interviewing the suspect after he turned himself in. >> reporter: the search for lamont postel ended around 5:00. >> the suspect had a friend contact one of the detectives and said that he wanted to turn himself in. >> reporter: police met postel in a park lot and arrest the him on the spot. he's arrest came less than 24 hours after he shot and killed 23-year-old student johnson here at the indigo lakes golf club. [ screaming ] eyewitness it. k. connor shot this video as the bullets shot into a crowd of party goers. it started when a fight broke out inside the clubhouse and spilled out into the parking lot.

postel also shot bcu students justine cunningham and tray williams. police say both of them will be okay. >> it's denver stating. >> reporter: eric hood played football with johnson at bcu. he went to a private vigil at the school earlier tonight. he last saw johnson just a couple days ago. >> he was always smiling, cracking joke, good guy. and it's just sad that happened like that. police say postel faces one count of first degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. and a message from johnson's mom earlier today she was begging him to and tonight she wants him to know the damage he's left behind. social media leaked the news of of her son's death before police had a chance to tell her.

deadly nightclub shooting near orlando's international drive. there have been reports the attack could be tied to drug operations in puert row rico. two people were ricked, several others injured. >> the idea of somebody being sent here to retaliate is not too far fetched. >> police have arrested one man, jose lopez, charged with carrying a concealed weapon and tampering with evidence. the manhunt for a triple murder suspect has ended tonight. law enforcement agencies across the state have been searching for 25-year-old jamal smith since last month. he was caught in miami thursday night. he was the third suspect wanted in connection with the shooting of four people in lakeland.

survived. a daytona beach man will be able to sleep peacefully now that he knows his grandson is safe and sound. that child was with his mother and is her boyfriend, an inmate who escaped, when marshals caught them yesterday in kentucky. >> bullock and quigley are both facing charges. almost 150 firearms. sheriffs deputies in orange county collected those weapons yesterday during a buyback event in orlando. they gave out gift cards in exchange for those guns. the goal is promote responsible gun ownership. >> we're seeing a lot of people that have no more use for the firearm, they just don't want it in their house anymore.

from 5:00 to 10:00 am. look at these cold temperatures. in the upper 30s. lake orange, macintosh, we could have some patchy frost but limited in the far northern tier of marion county. low 40s pierce, mid-40s from daytona beach. a l gusty along the coast. changes for tomorrow, we'll be clear early on, 6:00 am. but watch what happens. you can see the clouds, and a few isolated showers along our coast for the late morning. and once they push inland, they fall apart, the clouds will move inland. so plan on more cloud cover tomorrow. and the highest chance for a brief shower will be limited to the coastline. with the increase in crowds, not quite as warm today.
