this is channel 9 eye website eyewitness news at 11:00, coverage you can count on. breaking tonight, at least 3 people are dead after violent storms swept across louisiana and mississippi. >> tornado warning in this area. take shelter now. >> now that same storm system is taking aim at central florida. the national weather service says at least 7 tornadoes hit louisiana and

>> tom tea terry is tracking that storm. sfu is closed. >> all the satellite offices in the panhandle are going to curtail operations tonight until the threat of this weather passes. there is our main storm system but a tornado watch until 4:00 a.m., including tallahassee. we don't have any tornado warnings right at this moment. looks like the worst weather is shifting toward alabama but that tornado warning in effect until 4:00 a.m. they are going to be watching things closely. our storm pattern will get energized as we head today break in the morning. parts of lake and sumter county including a line of thunderstorms. could see some severe thunderstorms here. our weather i will be to the north and west but we are in a slight, including a few

especially before the lunch hour. so we'll be watching carefully. we know you will be here. our team are meteorologists will be here throughout the night. we will let you know what to expect before you head out the door tomorrow. tonight doctors are warning if you have been lucky enough to avoid the flu this season you're not clear. >> flu cases are on the rise. they have had a huge spike in the last 2 weeks. spoke with doctors today about the strain that's going around. jeff, they told you the flu season is hitting central florida later this year. >> yeah, typically we get to see a lot of flu cases start to pop up around the ends of december. this year we have just started to see those flu cases pop up in the last couple of weeks and it is starting to fill up the parking lots at local urgent cares.

hospitals and urgent cares asking them about the number of flu cases. we found that florida hospital facilities have had a busy week. the phones at the lee road center ring off and charts are piling up from patients with the flu. >> we are very busy. this is flu season. >> dr. timothy hendrix said they can't explain why the flu is late this year but they have even 940 flu cases. the time period when the flu typically hits. >> it looks like it's going to go higher this next week. >> we did some digging and found the state has also seen an increase. brevard county is the only one to level off according to the department of health. >> has an online no wait reservation system but we wanted to see how busy they are

make an appointment. there are openings but they are filling up fast. >> dr. hendrix said it's important to get a flu shot if you haven't already. >> you're going to be miserable. you're not going to be able to do anything. when you have the flu you are never going to forget it. >> and there are 4 types of flu circulating this year. the most predominant one is the had 1n1. the good news is that flu shot does protect you against all 4 of those strains and there's a lot of flu shots still available out there. reporting live in winter park. in the last 2 hours we checked with highway patrol troopers who said they are still searching for is semitruck who hit a woman before taking off. just before noon today.

ran over 68-year-old theresa vasquez as she waited on the shoulder. the driver initially stopped but took off when paramedics arrived. another case of zika has been confirmed in seminole county. the total is up to 29, all of the patients became infected while traveling. the virus is not in the local mosquito population just yet. altamonte police wrapped up an investigation where they believe a mom shot and killed her own adult son. >> a source close to the investigation told you they were contacted by a family member of the man who was killed after the suspect made some strange comments. >> yeah, that source tells me that a family member of both the victim and the suspect called 911 but tonight that 911 call isn't being released tonight while police search for clues as to why this all happened. >> sources close to the murder

tell eyewitness news a family member of the victim and the suspect called 911 after 59- year-old virginia ortega allegedly made disturbing comments about her son no longer being with us. >> we came in contact with a family armed with a handgun. >> inside police found the woman's son, 29-year-old blake howard shot dead. skycam was overhead when ortega was walked out by police in handcuffs. say they carried out the murder while he was in the shower of the home they lived in together. >> i was worried for her. i'm sorry i didn't pursue it for. >> neighbors tell us they were worried about the mental health of the woman and that she recently became frail from a dramatic weight loss. it's unclear what may have led to this tragic scene in the middle after gated community. tonight that woman is being held in the seminole county jail on no bond. we will check in tomorrow

updates on the situation. all right t. teenager accused of trying to kill a sheriff's deputy will stay in juvenile jail for the time being. the sergeant nearly killed was overcome with emotion today. >> he tried to kill me. >> mary pierce went to 15-year- old ortiz's hearing today. the teen turned himself in yesterday after being on the run since allegedly mowing pierce down last week when she tried to take him in. pierce said she hurts from head to toe with a fractured foot and head injury. >> are you planning to go right back to it? yes, ma'am. yes, ma'am. >> ortiz who showed no emotion today, nonchalant in fact will stay locked up for 3 weeks until his trial for burglary. the orlando mother of

locked up in jail while leads dwindle for the search for that baby. police say she discarded that baby girl after giving birth last monday. says proving the charges will be tough if investigators don't find out what happened to that baby. richardson may be able to walk out of jail without paying bail. it's another big night in the race for the white house. republicans in nevada are making their choice for the candidates and donald trump is the favorite once again. coming off a hot streak following wins in new hampshire and south carolina, donald trump is supposed to win tonight. the most interesting battle will likely be for second place tonight. slottingvoted ended about an hour ago but results aren't expected to come until around midnight. there's not much diversity with

nevada is also known for being conservative. the democrats will have their next battle in south carolina and don't forget the florida primary is coming up in 3 weeks. attorneys for an orange county millionaire are going to ask to set bond after a new trial. he argued last year that he had in effective counsel because his lawyer didn't object to video of him right there. ward said he will ask for a bond because his client is presumed in a moment and should be -- innocent and should be free. there are questions over how a school resource officer handled a fight at a middle school. >> we found out that officer used a taser on one of the students. you talked with parents and students who believe that's too much force to use on kids. >> and greg i talked to the

they told me they are sticking by that school resource officer who used that taser to break up that fight. they say if he hadn't used it the fight could have escalated. >> a parent sent a recorded message from the school. >> both students were arrested yesterday. we talked to an 8th grader who was concern canned over that type -- concerned over that type of force. >> they are not that strong. >> so we took his concerns to the apopka police department. >> i know that discussion comes up quite a bit. it is common accepted practice throughout the entire state and country. >> we obtained the arrest reports that said the officer used a taser on one student after he couldn't pull him off the other. the taser's probes were never released. >> i don't think at any point you should have to tase a

i believe that an adult is strong enough. >> we have covered students being shocked before, like last year at howard middle school. but tonight we reached out to the school district to see if they would consider addressing the controversy behind the policy and we are still waiting to hear back. apopka police are doing an investigation on the use of force but they told me it appears that school resource officer did everything right and they have him back on campus today and said he will be back on campus tomorrow. we are live in apopka. right now an orlando man is recovering in the hospital as police search for the men that shot him. he was shot 3 times at his mother's house. police believe he was targeted because the mystery gunmen stormed into the home and began opening fire. as soon as brown recovers police hope to ask him questions. tonight you could be

you're watching channel 9 eyewitness news at 11:00 with greg, martha and certified chief meteorologist tom terry. lake county driver tonight is worried others may be in danger after the brakes on her dodge dart failed 2 days after she got a recall notice. found out the parts needed to fix the problem on her car and more than 100,000 others may not even be available. >> i went to slow down and my brakes wouldn't work at all. >> she said she is lucky to be alive after driving into an intersection after her brakes failed last wednesday. >> what was running through your mind. >> she said she was approaching a stop sign but it felt like there was a brick behind the pedal so she pulled on the emergency brake.

got a recall notice from dodge. >> we reached out to said that more than 100,000 dodge darts with 2-liter and 2.4-liters are being recalled. said oil could leak into the part. but what was concerning to hill was the line that read the parts required to provide a permanent remedy are currently not available. >> i'm just really afraid somebody is going to get killed. >> chrysler said they would send customers a follow-up letter when the remedy parts were available but didn't provide a specific time line. hill waited 5 days before the parts were available but with 7 accidents and 2 injuries hill said waiting for repairs is putting countless drivers in danger. >> other people, other cars until you can take care of the

a rental car that her dealer covered. they are dodge dart was fixed. tonight more than 100 people living in celebration are being forced to live in darkness. their condos are wrapped and their one owes boarded up because of leaking roofs and mold which has been plaguing the town center condos for years. owners are responsible for damage but is responsible for fixing damage ogee the on the outside. >> i don't think i should have to pay. i don't think anybody should. i think they are thieves. >> the company released a statement that said it's unfair to blame. tonight fire crews are monitoring hot spots still in volusia county after a brush

forestry officials say a prescribed burn really got out of control this afternoon. the fire burned just a couple hundred yards from homes. the tractor also got stuck. fortunately nobody was hurt. another fire also got close to several houses. this one was along landfair. you can see some of the flames got as far as someone's backyard and scorched the backyard. no word yet on what started that fire. scary to say we have seen people go out with their garden hoses fighting off the flames. >> you have got to do what you can. mother nature will help tomorrow, though. >> yeah, good and bad. we have a lot more on my twitter feed. this coming from a gold's gym which the whole side was ripped off and part of the roof as well. no one injured in that. in fact the pictures happened

mobile home park and at least 3 people killed so far. 2 in louisiana, 1 in mississippi. these leafs right off the tree. this has been a very prolific storm. we've had a rare potentially dangerous situation to watch showing the potential of these storms. tornado watch in effect until 4:00. by the way, it's worth repeating that the fsu campus in tallahassee will not have any class activities before noon. watching development out here in the gulf of mexico. most of the storm energy will go north but that's where the highest risk has been so far today. certainly backed up by the damage and the death toll so far. for central florida a lesser risk but still a chance for some severe weather tomorrow.

. breaking news right now happening in the panhandle where the national weather service confirming a tornado has touched down in pensacola. we know several people are injured. thousands are without power. rescuers are also on the scene following the collapse of an apartment complex there. we are going to stay on top of information. a special ceremony held for the father and daughter found home. >> tonight investigators still old died.

committed suicide. a buddhist monk blessed their spirits today home where they lived. the arrest history of another candidate for county commission but he told us his past shouldn't keep voters from supporting him. 5 years ago he was put on probation for alleged witness tampering. he describes those as a misunderstanding and says he just wants to serve his community with the people as his platform. in brevard county the city of -- is keeping a close eye on traffic after new construction projects snarled traffic. the lee wood forest community is locatedded between -- this is the same area where the county has shut down to make storm water improvements. many drivers didn't realize the road construction until they were trying to find a way around the mess. the city says additional signage and more closures are
