this crash. we have followed every development in this case since that 8-year-old boy was hit last thursday. >> and we were there today as the suspect faced a judge for the first time. angela jacobs spoke with the attorney's office about the case, and they told you the suspect first claimed he stopped but was told to leave. >> reporter: and that's just one of the conflicting accounts he's given. but no matter what happened, prosecutors reenforced that leaving the scene under these circumstances is a second degree felony. his arm still in a sling, thomas limped to his spot to face a judge four days after police say he hit an 8-year-old on a bike and didn't stop. >> i find probable cause, and i'll set the bond at $15,000. would you explain that? >> reporter: he is accused of hitting dayshon hill last thursday night. glidewell is

of an accident causing bodily harm. it prompted several calls to 911. today the assistant state attorney told us this afternoon's appearance would have happened sooner had the 73-year-old not needed medical attention. addressing this case, prosecutors point to inconsistencies in his account about what he says happened after he allegedly hit hill. >> according to the case report, he did get out and look, then again he also is at wan point in time claiming he has no memory. >> reporter: if questions of mental competence are raised, it won't come from the state. >> the defense might raise that issue. but that's for the defense. the state just proceeds with the prosecution. >> reporter: i just spoke with glidewell's son, he did not want

dad would never keep going if he knew he hit someone. he isn't surprised by the inconsistencies because he says his father has been ill for sometime and he believes he suffered a medical episode. breaking news out of orange county where an 8-year-old riverside elementary school student is in critical condition arch falling into a canal near the school. it appears the boy had been walking on a pipe over the canal and he fell into the water. we'll have an update for nuabout 30 minutes. single moms with no place to live begged for help today from commissioners and county leaders they are working on finding homes for families living on the streets. kathy, some of them say

shelters. >> reporter: the mayor told county employees to try to help them immediately. it's one of the reasons the county wants to provide housing rather than just shelter. and those homeless single mothers told us today they're just days away from living in their cars or even on a park bench. one young single mother says she's overstaying her welcome with a friend but has nowhere to go. another, the mother of four says she is being kicked out of the salvation army shelter in six days. >> it's monday. because i can't find a job within 45 days. no daycare or nothing. how are you supposed to find a job? >> reporter: commissioners talked about housing projects in the works for the homeless and low-income families. we told you how one county leader revisited the idea of turning the jail work release center into a homeless shelter for families. the mayor says at this point

while the democrats expect to have their nominee in the next two weeks, republicans are preparing for a long, drawn-out fight that may not end for months. christopher heath joins us now. some say the fight may go all the way to the convention 32. >> each party is setting different expectations for hillary who is expected tovr a big night tonight. as republicans and donald trump, they're also poised for a big night. but members within the republican party say their best chance to stop trump will be on the convention 32. >> i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> reporter: four years ago in tampa, a party united behind the nominee, mitt romney, this year in cleveland that may not be so easy for the republican party. >> the heart and the soul of the republican party is at stake here.

cleveland and vote for whichever candidate wins the nomination. if trump wins florida, he'll be obligated to vote for trump. >> i don't particularly want to be put in that position but you do what do you. >> reporter: what do you do if no candidate has enough delegates to secure the nomination in cleveland? it becomes a brokered convention, something that hasn't happened for republicans in 64 years. >> we get lots of training, the candidates promming different states and delegates what they want to hear. >> reporter: if no candidate gets 50% of the vote, they would be released, able to vote for whomever they choose. even if trump has the most delegates, party rules could keep him off the top of the ticket if he can't secure the majority. >> the division is severe. >> very severe. >> while most think a brokered convention would be the worst thing, rich still thinks the party will come behind the nominee.

is already done. >> reporter: you're not far from a grocery store, a pharmacy, or even a good haircut haircut. business owners will tell you is it has been slow here. most blame it on an ongoing road project. >> my business was right here. now it's right here. and it's just going down and down. >> reporter: several businesses are suing daytona beach. the 10-page lawsuit claims orange avenue was shut down for improvements and detour signs were not put up for several weeks. when they were installed, the lawsuit states some of the detours took drivers more than a mile out of the way of their businesses. >> a lot of times, instead of being detoured they're being deterred.

the no. 1 rental complaint, the loss of your security deposit. several families claim they lost thousands in deposits to the same landlord in a luxury high rise. >> they say they were charge forward someone else's damage. many renters face a real fight. >> reporter: high rise condos at a luxury downtown address. borrow at least five renters, their experience at the view was ugly and costly and they blame the same landlord. >> it's completely absurd if you think you can keep our money and we're just gonna forget about it. >> reporter: sandra santiago lost nearly $2,000. vanessa who i reached at her new home in pennsylvania burned for $2,000. >> i really just want justice to be done. >> reporter: both blamed this guy. landlord v. j. comar. before moving in, sandra took pictures and listed rug stains and scratched floors.

moving out, he kept the nearly $2,000 deposit, blaming her for that preexisting damage. >> it's completely false. we did no damages. we actually fixed stuff in the unit. >> reporter: vanessa claims he kept her $2,000 for damages she documented before moving in. >> it infuriates me every time. >> reporter: she sued comar in small claims court but that failed. >> i do have the proof. i have been unable to get a hold of him. >> reporter: florida's law requires the landlord to prove a renter caused the damages if they're withholding the deposit. going to court is the only way to enforce that. florida's regulations could cover legal fees. >> if you do hire an attorney and you do win, the landlord is going to have to pay for your attorney.
