school back on february 12th after longtime principal frank dent suddenly resigned citing personal and family reasons. then days later, dent's assistant principal amy puckett asks to be reassigned. she had been with the school district in that role for nearly two years. on thursday, a possible threat of violence against the security and parents getting no prior notification. that left many parents with unanswered questions and school leaders allowing execused absences at both the middle school and the high school. as wfxr's bill wadell reports, while many unanswered questions do remain with both parents and students, officials say they're doing what they can to ease concerns. 00:00 - 00:0500:20 - 00:25 tom mccracken "i as well have heard embezzlement and fraud and all these other things and the rumors get juicy."tom mccracken is on damage control. he and other roanoke county school board members - are getting an earful online. the first complaint - parents weren't notified fast enough - about a threat of violence at billy spence "i'd rather play it safe than sorry, you know. quicker, that had been nice." billy spence kept his kids - the threat - was not credible. mccracken says - an alert was posted on facebook - but there were no phone calls or text messages to parents. tom mccracken "why werent we notified sooner. so thats a valid question."the other concern, rumors swirling about northside principal frank dent unexpectedly stepping down ...
8:02 am
only days later.while some accuse there was misconduct between the two, mccracken says its a personnel matter. tom mccracken "there is no validity, i have researched i have spent the time, the days the hours the weeks at northside at central trying to figure out whats going on. i've seen nothing to substantiate any of these claims."the hope now - shifting focus away from social media - and back on school work. billy spence "it's tough with teenagers anyways because there's always try to to tell them don't listen to it. try to get the instead of worrying about what everyone else is saying."

*dispatcher* doing while you're on the other end of his or her line?i recently got a tour of the roanoke 9-1-1 cent to see what happens when the calls come in. a couple seconds of nats of ringing phone only, no answering!they're the lifelines you seldom hear about... but they're likely the people you'll need *first* in an emergency.a couple seconds of nats of dispatcher talking on the phone.... winter is the time of year roanoke county 911 dispatchers say they see an increase in fire related calls.zach @ 19:10-:14 "we defnitely receive a lot more reports of structure fires..."zach beckner is a volunteer firefighter..zach @ 19:16-:25 "people are trying to stay warm, whether they're may be abandoned homes, or maybe they're just using sources of heat-- they're not using them very safely."...not just a volunteer firefighter, zach is also the communications supervisor for roanoke city's 911 dispatch center. a small operation-- but a vital one. zach showed me around the downtown digs, and walked me through how the nearly all- female first response team takes fire calls.zach @ 15:20-:22 "when a fire call comes in, time is of the essence." *butted*zach @ 15:31-:38 "the fire dispatcher has about 60 seconds to get that call entered and sent out to the fire department." *butted*zach @ 15:44-:47 "we have strict time limits when we have to get those calls out."those strict time limits put in place by the national fire protection association, which sets response times for fire dispatch centers.here at the roanoke city 911 center, calls come in through one dispatcher... and *that* dispatcher patches them through to workers specifically trained to handle fire-related emergencies.zach @ 17:20-:26 "everything that the fire department... while they're on their way to a call... is based on the knowledge we have here in the 911 center."*butted*zach @ 17:39-:51 "if we're giving them information that someone's trapped, if it's a

wfxr news >> january: all right, welcome back, everybody. at 8:13 and "good day, virginia". wfxr your local election headquarters and the virginia primary set for march first and the latest poll shows donald trump leading the pack among republicans. >> kyle: yes! newport university poll shows donald trump with 28 percent of the vote. former senator marco rubio in second with 22% and ted cruz close behind with 18%. but the poll bad news for donald trump. it found almost 2/3 of virginia voters bring an unfavorable view of the billionaire republican to the voting booth. >> january: on the democrat side hillary clinton has 52% of support versus 40 for sanders.
8:13 am
1st, as mentioned, but in the meantime no rest for the presidential candidates as they campaign ahead of key nominating contests this week in nevada and south carolina. >> kyle: kelly wright reports from new york. >> reporter: following a big victory in the south carolina primary over the weekend, donald trump looks to keep his momentum going. >> the people of our country are amazing, amazing people and we want to win again. we're going to win. we're going to win. we're going to win. >> senators marco rubio and ted cruz also back on the campaign trail. holding rallies in nevada ahead of the state's gop caucus tomorrow night. >> if y'all agree with me that it's now or never, i ask every one of you to join me. the nevada caucuses are 48 hours from now. >> so we cannot lose this election! i'm here today to ask you to caucus for me. >> the remaining republican candidates are vying to pick up supporters of jeb bush who
8:14 am
>> jeb bush supporters are not going to donald trump. donald trump is a divisive, reckless candidate. >> in the meantime hillary clinton is in california to raise money following her victory over bernie sanders in nevada. >> as long as secretary clinton wins victories, however narrow, as in iowa and nevada, those delegates stay with her. right now she's on the path to the nomination. >> reporter: but the vermont senator says the fight is far from over to go the distance. >> this campaign is gaining momentum because we're listening to the american people. >> sanders and clinton are now turning their attention to south carolina which holds its democratic primary next saturday. in new york, kelly wright, fox news. >> all right, dive a little bit more to weekend primary and
8:15 am
ed again. are they becoming the shoo ins for both races? >> reporter: the dynamic changed significantly. donald trump is winning but winning in the low 30s. 31, 32, 33% of the vote which is all you need when there are 6 candidates running but only 3, 30% can easily make you come in third as first. on the democratic side, hillary clinton got a huge win for momentum in nevada. it is a narrow win and her loss permanently. bernie sanders is not going anywhere so it looks like a long slog on both sides. >> now we saw the newport study that shows donald trump with the unfavorable rating here in
8:16 am
the question is how do you win the primary with 60% of voters saying they don't like you. >> the other 30% like him a lot and when there are multiple candidates, 30% is good for the win and 32% is good for the win but that is the trump campaign. many like him a lot and see him as the salvation of the country and thingers trying to wrabwrap their minds around the donald trump presidency. >> it hurts to think about it. but john kasich still in the fight but not really. when do you think kasich will bow out? >> there is enormous pressure on all of the kapdidates and each between ruz and cubio to drop out and if republicans are part of the 60% unfavorable group in the way they view
8:17 am
nomination and then a lot of pressure on all the candidates but one to drop out so the anti-trump vote can coalesce around a single candidate. >> and what will we from the republican party to try to stall not only the momentum but whatever he's built? how do they shut that down? >> i think they've been going about it the wrong way. they've been trying to stop trump by attacking trump. that only makes his on core supporters rally around him all the stronger. the other cantidates, particularly rubio and cruz need to do, need to create the forward-looking vision about where they see america going in the next 5-10 years and talk more about hillary clinton than they talk about donald trump. donald trump cannot exist without people paying attention to him. if you stop paying attention to him, that might be more effective. >> kyle: we'll see what happens. they move to virginia next week. the primary 8 days from today.
8:18 am
>> kyle: certainly a lot to talk about once that happens and see where the race goes from there. >> reporter: some may end up right here!
8:19 am
8:20 am
exciting for >> jason: welcome back to "good day, virginia". a not too great start to the week. the second half looks okay but it will be significantly cooler and then it's the pressure
8:21 am
and going to be a shock a little later in the week. we'll have flowers out pretty shortly though. take a look. here comes the count down. 7 days left in the month of february since it is leap year after all. 20 days left until daylight saving time. now that is interesting because it is already past 6:00 as far as our sunset is concerned. and we're almost back into the 6:00 hour for sunrise. show you that in just a minute. 20 days when you have spring as far as the calendar is concerned. the days are longer and warmer for us and sunrise is approaching 7 a.m. it's 7:01 today. tomorrow 7:00 on the nose and we cross into the 6:00 hour. sunset already coming after 6 p.m. 6:06 as a matter of fact. and the average high temperature for the day has crossed the 50 mark and 51 the average high in roanoke today. not going to see that.
8:22 am
days as a matter of fact. but at least we're heading in the right direction theoretically. right now outside we do have some pretty dense fog and dense areas from lewisburg to hot springs and roanoke with improving visibility and clearing up with fluctuating visibility and give yourself plenty of time so you don't run into problems in the fog. 40 in lewisburg and 46 in roanoke and 45 in lynchburg and 46 also in martinsville and 44 in with clouds around and that's down to the south and it is that rough line with showers and clouds stalling out down to the south and begins to lift up down into the day tomorrow and because of the area down to the pressure to the south and west and it's riding along with that front that will bring us rain as we had late in the day today
8:23 am
so take a look at the future cast as we head towards noon. the chance for a couple of spotty showers and clouds around with maybe showers forming up as we head towards the evening drive time as well. we'll notice those become more numerous and wider spread as we go through the overnight and at that area of low pressure that makes its way up and in and we could be dealing with pretty heavy rain first thing tomorrow morning for the morning commute. get up a little early and give yourself a little extra time and as that moves out, we will find things calming down. the second half of the day, another area of low pressure will swing a front through as we head into the day on wednesday. that one will also bring us the chance for some heavy rain, maybe even some thunder. so may see some flood watches starting to pop up as the ground is pretty saturated right now so watch that through the day today and into tomorrow with those rain showers moving through. the rainy first half of the week, the second half much dryer bialso much cooler.

>> january: welcome back, everybody. the anti-hero smash deadpool had a smash weekend at the box office but several took a shot to dethrone it this weekend. >> kyle: but did any come close? it earned another 55 million this weekend raking in 152 million last weekend when it opened to president's day. not bad considering deadpool produced for just 58 million so they already recouped their investment. >> january: industry analysts say it's on track to become one of the most successful r-rated movies ever. kung fu panda 3 in second place with ticket receipts totaling 12.5 million. risen debuted in third place with 11.8 million. >> and the puritan period thriller the witch opened with 9 million and how to be single rounds out the top 5 with a little over and four cats. >> wait, i'm single and i don't have any cats.

8:46 am
much of the day today. testimonies pretty steady in blacksburg as well and that is not dropping too far in the overnight and tomorrow with the rain coming through and temperatures will be pretty steady as well. 46 right now in roanoke. a bit of a breeze out of the south/southeast at 7 mph and the humidity at 100% and we're looking at dense fog in portions of roanoke and those temperatures remain steady in the mid to upper 40s throughout the day and trailing off just a touch as we go through the evening and overnight. low visibility has improved at the airport and up to 5 miles. .3 of a mile in lewisburg and still socked in in hot springs and visibility in blacksburg. glenville on the way down currently and where wherever you need to travel, give yourself extra time. in the region mainly in the 40s though hot springs and lewisburg falling back in the 30s.

45 in blacksburg and we do have plenty of clouds around for much of the region and the cold front make its way through the region earlier. that brought a couple of very scattered showers with that front stalling out down to the south with another wave of low pressure currently out by louisiana. we'll slide up that thing and bring this rain on into tomorrow. first, though, that area with the high pressure to the north will continue to wedge some of that moisture back against this part of the appalachians and cloudiness through much of the roanoke valley as you go through the day today and additional showers later on and see that here in the future cast with plenty of clouds lingering for us. the showers start to redevelop as we head into the later part of the afternoon and right around drive time you deal with some and maybe plan on the bit of the slower ride home tonight. tomorrow morning we'll be looking at moderate and heavy rain across much of the region so do expect the slow ride to work tomorrow morning. good news is that gets out of here pretty quickly. by the noon time it's starting to exit the region. that will leave us with just a couple of showers and plenty of
8:48 am
tomorrow. that's all in advance of the next system to come through into the day on wednesday and that will bring in some more showers and some of that stuff could be heavy at times with the possibility for some thunderstorms as this front comes through during peak heating times so we'll have to watch as the pretty vigorous cold front making its way through the region will usher in some significantly keeler air on the back side of it -- cooler air on the back side of it. the good news is the air on the second half of the week will dry out. the temperatures in the 30s fonear 50 and same into central around lynchburg the temperature at 49 for the afternoon. vista. temperatures tomorrow a bit cooler as we'll have the rain making its way through and more rain and maybe some thunderstorms for wednesday and windy and cooler the rest of the week but drying out for the weekend with some sunshine. we're just trading the warm wet weather for cool dry weather. >> kyle: i suppose. >> january: i guess if you like that.
